โALL YOU NEEDย to do is keep your head down and your temper reigned in. Youโre a smart kid. Youโve got this. Just keep that tongue of yours in check and donโt react to any nonsense. Do you want me to walk in with you?โ
โDo I fuck.โ
โItโs okay to be nervous, Joe.โ
โIโm not nervous.โ
โAnd itโs okay to be scared, too.โ
โDo I look like Iโm scared?โ I growled, aggravated by his incessant coddling. โIโm not a baby, Dar.โ
โI know youโre not,โ my big brother conceded, as we walked up the path to Ballylaggin Community School โ a journey he had taken every weekday for the past six years. His time at secondary school was over now, while mine was just beginning. โI justย needย this to go well for you.โ
โYeah,โ I snorted. โWell, we both know thatโs not going to happen.โ
โThis is your fresh start, Joey,โ he said. โWhatever happened in primary school is behind you now. Donโt carry any of that trouble with you.โ
โThereโs no such thing as fresh starts,โ I drawled. โJust different locations filled with the same bullshit.โ
โYouโre too young to be this cynical.โ
โAnd youโre too smart to waste your time and breath on this pep talk,โ I countered. โIโm not Shannon, lad. I donโt need the words or the hand-holding.โ
โIs it so wrong of me to want to see you off on your first day of secondary school?โ
โYou could have done that back at the house,โ I reminded him. โYou didnโt need to walk me to school. Iโm not a baby.โ
โYouโre my baby brother.โ
โIโve never been a baby anything, Dar.โ
โAlways so self-sufficient.โ Shaking his head, he gave me a sad smile. โWell, maybe I wanted to spend some extra time with you.โ
โWe share a room,โ I deadpanned, shifting the ton of bricks that was my school bag onto my other shoulder. โWe already spend enough time together.โ
โI love you, Joe,โ he threw me by saying. โYou know that, right?โ
โYouย loveย me?โ Feet faltering, I turned to look up at him. โWhat the hell is wrong with you?โ
โNothing,โ he replied, tone thick with emotion. โIโm justโฆ I need you to know that.โ
โWhy?โ I demanded, feeling unnerved by his sudden declaration. It was out of place and felt all wrong to me. โWhatโs happening?โ
โNothing.โ Smiling, he reached down and ruffled my hair. โNothingโs happening, shithead. I just wanted to tell you.โ
โOkayโฆโ I eyed him suspiciously, not sure if I entirely believed him. โBut if you evenย thinkย about hugging me in front of all these people, I will kick you in the nuts.โ
โYour voice is starting to break,โ he chuckled. โMy baby brother is growing up.โ
โI donโt need a deep voice to kick your ass,โ I shot back, hackles rising.
He rolled his eyes. โSure thing, squeaky.โ
โDo all the girls here wear skirts that short?โ Eyes widening, I watched as a group of girls filed out off a school bus and onto the footpath in front of us. โI take it all back, Dar.โ Delighted with life, I grinned up at my brother. โI think Iโm going to like secondary school.โ
โDonโt even think about it,โ Darren chuckled, ribbing me with his elbow. โThose girls are in sixth year. Youโre a baby first year to them.โ
โAlready told ya that Iโve never been a baby anything,โ I shot back with a wink before turning my attention back to the glorious view of bare legs and peachy asses.
โArenโt you a bit young for getting notions about girls?โ
โIโm thirteen.โ
โNot until December.โ
โI bet Iโve seen more tits than you.โ
โMamโs donโt count.โ
We both laughed, causing a few of girls in front to turn around.
โOh my god! Darren Lynch!โ one of the blondeโs squealed, giving my brother a warm smile, as she moved straight for him. โWhat are you doing here? Didnโt you get like a thousand points in your leaving cert last June? Thereโs no way youโre repeating sixth year?โ
โNo, not repeating. Just walking my little brother in for his first day,โ Darren replied, receiving the half-hug the girl offered him. โAnd I could ask you the same question. What are you doing slumming it in a BCS uniform, Tommen girl?โ
โI, uh, transferred over here. Iโm going to finish up sixth year at BCS,โ the blonde replied in a strained tone. โItโs, ah, sort of for the best, all things considered, you know?โ
โYeah.โ My brother nodded and sympathy filled his eyes, which confused the fuck out of me. โI do.โ
โSo, howโs everything going, Dar?โ She was quick to push on from whatever the hell had them eyeing each otherย meaningfully. I rolled my eyes and forced back the urge to hurl. โI havenโt seen you since that weekend.โ
โIโve been around,โ he told her, scratching the back of his neck. โJust dealing, you know?โ
โYeah.โ Another meaningful look passed between them. โI know.โ
โI donโt,โ I decided to interject, because why the hell not? โCare to explain what the hell youโre both talking about?โ
My brother sighed in resignation before reeling off introductions. โCaoimhe, this mouthy shit is my little brother.โ He turned to me and gestured to the girl. โJoe, this is Caoimhe Young. You were probably too young to remember her in primary school, but her little sister is friends with Shannon.โ
Her blue eyes landed on my face, and she smiled. โSo, youโre the next Lynch in the pecking order, huh?โ
โApparently so.โ I shrugged noncommittedly before turning back to Darren. โAre ya done with the trip down memory lane, or do I need to stand around for another ten minutes?โ
โOh boy, Dar,โ she laughed. โYouโre in trouble with this one, huh?โ
โTell me about it,โ my brother replied with a sigh. โIt was good seeing you, Caoimhe.โ Catching hold of the back of my neck, he steered us around the group of girls and up the path towards the school. โTake care of yourself.โ
โYou, too, Dar,โ she called after us. โKeep in touch.โ
โKeep in touch?โ I shook my head and wrestled free from his hold. โWhat the hell does that mean?โ
โWho knows,โ Darren muttered, steering me towards the gates of the school. โYou know the way girls are.โ
โDid you have sex with her?โ
โWhat?โ He stopped walking and swung me around to look at him. โNo, I didnโt haveย sexย with her. Why would you even ask me that?โ
โDonโt get all high and mighty on me,โ I laughed, playfully shoving his chest. โI know youโve been with girls in the past.โ
Darren sighed heavily. โNot like that, I havenโt.โ
โWell, I think she likes you,โ I offered up, falling into step alongside him once again. โShe was looking at you with those gooey eyes.โ
โGooey eyes,โ Darren chuckled. โYouโre a dope.โ
โSheย was,โ I laughed. โIโm surprised she didnโt swoon when she saw you.โ Clearing my throat, I pressed a hand to my forehead and mimicked, โOh, Darren Lynch. Is that you my eyes can see? Be still my beating heart!โ
โYouโre such a little shit,โ my brother laughed.
โAnd youโre a dark horse,โ I shot back with a wink, ribbing him with my elbow. โGot anymore blondes lurking around school, waiting to fall at your feet? Because Iโll be happy to take them off your hands.โ
โPack it in,โ he chuckled, with a rueful shake of his head. โHonestly, itโs not like that. Sheโs just a good friend.โ
โDonโt worry, Dar,โ I laughed. โI know youโre gay. Iโm only messing with yaโโ
โJesus Christ, Joey!โ Darren hissed, clamping a hand on my shoulder. He looked around us, eyes wild and panicked, before he released a breath and muttered, โNot so loud, okay?โ
โWhy do you do that?โ I demanded, good mood forgotten, as I shook his hand off, feeling my temper rise. โWhy do you hide who you are?โ
He shook his head, blue eyes laced with pain. โJoey.โ
โNo, itโs bullshit, Dar,โ I pushed, unwilling to let it go. โIโm not ashamed of you, and you shouldnโt be either.โ
โIโm not ashamed of myself,โ he replied quietly.
โWell, good,โ I snapped. โBecause you donโt have shit to be ashamed of.โ
โYeah, well, according to Dad, I have.โ
โYeah, well, fuck Dad,โ I spat. โHeโs the one who should be ashamed of himself, not you.โ
โYou do realize that up until six years ago, being gay was a punishable crime in this country?โ
โYeah, and so were condoms and any other form of birth control,โ I growled. โWhich just goes to show that the laws are bullshit.โ
โJoeโฆโ
โThis country is backwards, Darren, you know that,โ I argued. โYeah, itโs getting better now, but we both know that the foundations on which our laws are built upon have a lot less to do with common sense than religion.โ
โI really donโt want to talk about it, Joe.โ
โWell, I donโt want to see you walking around the place with your tail between your legs when you have no reason to,โ I countered. โItโs bullshit, Darren. Every word that comes out of that manโs mouth is utter bullshit, so donโt let him make you feel bad about yourself. Dadโs living in the dark ages, so donโt you dare let him drag you back there with him.โ
โWhat do you propose I do, Joey?โ he asked in a weary tone. โGo toe to toe with him?โ
Yes.ย โYou can take him.โ
โNo, I canโt,โ he replied. โBesides, not every disagreement in life has to result in a dog fight.โ
โIn our lives it does,โ I corrected hotly. โSo, you better get your head in the fight and make damn sure that youโre the biggest dog.โ
โLike you, squeaky?โ
โI might not be the biggest dog in the fight,โ I begrudgingly conceded. โBut I always have the sharpest teeth.โ
โKind of like the saying; itโs not the size of the dog that matters, itโs the fight in the dog?โ
I nodded. โNow youโre speaking my language.โ
Darren gave me a strange look. โSo, in your mind, itโs a dog-eat-dog world that weโre living in?โ
โItโs not in my mind, Dar. Itโs a fact.โ
โYou know,โ he mused in a melancholy tone. โI canโt figure out if that backbone of yours will be your saving grace or your downfall.โ
โWhichever way it goes is fine by me,โ I said with a shrug. โBecause I couldnโt care less.โ
โThatโs not true,โ he argued. โYou care.โ
โNo,โ I laughed humorlessly. โI really donโt.โ
โI need you to start caring, Joey.โ
โI care,โ I grumbled. โI care about you, and Shan, and Tadhg, and Olsโโ
โI need you to start caring aboutย you, Joeโโ
โHolyย shit.โ
My feet came to an abrupt stop the minute my eyes landed on a tall blonde, with the face of an angel, sitting on the wall at the entrance of the school.
โWhat?โ Darren demanded, looking around us. โWhereโs the fire?โ
โThere.โ Struck dumb at the sight of her, and with all notions gone of continuing any further conversation with my brother, I pointed to the girl whose long blonde hair was splaying all around her in the breeze. โHer.โ
โI donโt know her,โ my brother noted. โShe must be a first year.โ
Looking like nothing my eyes had ever seen, I watched as she sucked on a Chupa Chups lollypop, entirely uninterested in the lad attempting to talk to her, while her long legs dangled from the wall.
โJesus Christ.โ I blew out a breath. โI donโt care if youโre gay or not, lad. You canโt deny that girl is the best-looking thing your eyes have ever seen.โ
It was at the exact moment in time that her gaze flicked to mine.
The minute our eyes collided, I felt a pang of heat shoot straight to my chest.
Holy fuck.
When I met her gaze head on, I fully-expected her to blush and look away.
She didnโt.
Instead, she tilted her head to one side and studied me with a similar look to the one I was sure that I was sporting.
Arching her brow, she slowly removed the lollypop from her mouth, and gave me an expectant look.
My gaze flicked questioningly to the dark-haired lad still trying and failing to garner her attention before returning to her face.
With a defiant tilt of her chin, she gave me a look that saidย what are you waiting for?
Well shit.
Whatย wasย I waiting for?
โSteady up, baby brother,โ Darren chuckled, as he forcefully walked me up the path towards the main building andย awayย from the blonde. โSheโs cute, but donโt throw your hat in the ring just yet. I promise there will be fifty more girls in your year that look just as lovely.โ
Doubtful.
โI donโt want fifty more girls,โ I replied, twisting back to find her still watching me. โI just wantย thatย girl.โ
โOh, to be a first year again.โ Laughing, Darren dragged me along with him until she was out of sight. โIf Iโve taught you nothing else these past twelve years, then remember this; keep your temper in check, your head in the books, your ass off the streets, and your hands off girls that look like that.โ
โLike what?โ
โLike they have heartbreak written all over them.โ
โSo, in other words, spend the next six years of secondary school living like a priest,โ I grumbled, breaking free of him when we reached the school. โWhere do I sign up?โ
โHey, thatโs what I did,โ my brother chuckled, thoroughly amused by my disgust. โIt worked well for me.โ
โBecause youโre shit craic,โ I told him. โSeriously, Dar. Itโs a wonder weโre related at all.โ
โWell, we are,โ he reminded me before pulling me in for a hug. โIโll always be your brother, no matter what, okay? Donโt ever forget it.โ
โWhat did I tell you?โ I hissed, scrambling away from him before anyone saw me hugging myย brother of all people. โI should follow through and kick you in the nuts for that.โ
โTake care of yourself.โ His voice was thick with emotion as he watched me scowl at him. โI love you.โ
โJesus, relax with the love bullshit,โ I grumbled, feeling acutely uncomfortable. โIโm starting secondary school, asshole, youโre not sending me off to war.โ
He nodded stiffly. โI know.โ
Feeling off-balance, I eyed him warily before shaking my head and walking off in the direction of the entrance.
Stop.
Donโt go.
Somethingโs wrong.
Turn back.
This is all wrong.
โDar?โ Hovering uncertainly, I turned back to find him already walking away. โIโll see you after school, yeah?โ
My brother didnโt answer.
โDar?โ
He didnโt turn back to look at me, either.
โDarren?โ
Instead, he pulled his hood up and kept walking away from me.
โSo, is that guy your keeper, or can you think for yourself?โ a female voice asked, and I spun around to find none other than blondie from the wall standing in front of me โ and holy fuck if she wasnโt even better looking close up.
With all notions of Darrenโs weird farewell long forgotten, I focused entirely on the face looking up at me.
High cheekbones, pink pouty lips, big green eyes, and hair that looked like something out of a magazine, she was, hands down, the best-looking thing my eyes had ever seen. โI can definitely think for myself.โ
โYou saw me back there,โ she stated evenly, green eyes snaring me.
โI did.โ
โYou kept walking.โ
I nodded like a fool. โI did.โ
โDonโt do that again.โ
Fuck me.ย โI wonโt.โ
She looked me over once more before nodding in approval. โYouโre beautiful.โ
Well shit.ย โLikewise.โ
โHm.โ Her lips tipped up. โSo, do you have a name, boy-who-can-think-for-himself?โ
โDoes it matter?โ I countered, needing to regain some ground I had lost to this powerhouse of a girl. โWe both know that youโll be calling me baby by the end of the day.โ
She licked her lips to bury her smile. โIs that so?โ
I stepped closer. โYou tell me, blondie.โ
Now, she did, and it was a glorious sight. โOkay, that was seriously smooth.โ
I smirked. โThanks.โ
โIโm Aoife,โ she laughed, holding her hand out to me.
โJoey,โ I replied, accepting her small hand in mine.
โJoey.โ Shaking my hand, she tilted her head to one side, and studied me without a hint of shyness. โYour name suits you.โ
โI could say the same thing about you,โ I replied. โYour name means radiance and beauty, right?โ
She grinned. โYou know your Irish.โ
Yeah, I knew my Irish, but notย thatย well.
There had been a girl in my class at primary school named Aoife, who had constantly droned on about how she had been named after an Irish warrior queen, with a level of beauty that was rumored to rival that of Helen of Troy.
I wasnโt, however, about to tellย thisย particular Aoife that.
Not when I needed every advantage I could get.
โSo, what class have you been assigned to?โ she asked, retrieving her folded-up timetable from the pocket of her short, pleated skirt. โIโm in First Year 3.โ
Fuck if I knew.
I straightened out the crumpled-up ball of paper that was my class timetable for the school year. I was fucking thrilled when I read the wordsย First Year 3ย on the page. โSame here.โ
She was in my class.
Get in there!
Maybe my luckย wasย changing.
โSo, youโre as mediocre a student as I am,โ she laughed. โMy brother got assigned to First Year 1. Thatโs the class for the brainiacs.โ
โYouโre a twin?โ
She nodded. โFor my sins.โ
โSo, weโre the third smartest class?โ
โOr the third thickest,โ she laughed. โWhichever way your glass is filled.โ
โWhy? How many classes has our year been split into?โ
โFour.โ
โJesus,โ I laughed. โThat doesnโt say much for us, does it?โ
โNope.โ She grinned back at me. โNot a whole pile. So, what primary school are you coming from?โ
โSacred Heart,โ I replied. โYou?โ
โSt. Bernadetteโs,โ she said with a grimace. โThatโs theโโ
โAll-girls primary school run by the nuns outside of the town?โ I winced in sympathy. โWell, thatโs shit luck on you, huh?โ
โYep. Eight years with the nuns. Canโt you see my halo shining?โ
โOh yeah, itโs blinding.โ
โAccording to Sister Alphonsus, I should be continuing my education in an all-girls environment,โ she mused with a devilish smile. โApparently, I have a wild streak in me, with a penchant for theย male formย that no amount of prayer can eliminate.โ She rolled her eyes. โAll because I said I thought the guy playing Jesus in a movie they showed us was gorgeous.โ
I arched a brow. โGorgeous?โ
โWhat?โ she laughed. โHeย was.โ
โWell, it sounds to me like you need to spend less time on your knees praying and more time โโ
โDonโt say it,โ she warned reaching up to cover my mouth with her hand.
โWith theย male form,โ I chuckled, peeling her fingers off my lips with my hand.
โSo, should I spend more time with the male form in general?โ she laughed, and somehow our fingers were entwined now. โOr with you? Because itโs safe to say that Iโm impressed with the male form standing in front of me.โ
โIs that your way of telling me that you donโt have a boyfriend?โ
โNo, itโs my way of telling you that Iย willย have a boyfriend once you ask me.โ
โJesus.โ My heartrate sped up. โYouโre not backwards about anything, are you?โ
She winked and slid her school bag off her shoulder. โWhereโs the fun in that?โ
Thrown off kilter by this girl, I took the bag she held out for me and slung it over my free shoulder.
โThere,โ she said with an approving nod, admiring her bright pink bag on my shoulder. โThat should do it.โ
โShould do what?โ
โWarn the other girls away.โ
โWarn the other girls away?โ My brows rose up. โDid you justย markย me with your bag?โ
โI sure did,โ she replied, smiling sweetly up at me before turning on her heels and sauntering off in the direction of the school. โNow, letโs go,ย baby.โ
I laughed, because, in all honesty, what else could I do?
I had a distinct feeling that I would be doing a lot of following after this girl.
Still, my feet moved after her.
