Prologue

Saving 6 (Boys of Tommen, 3)

โ€œALL YOU NEEDย to do is keep your head down and your temper reigned in. Youโ€™re a smart kid. Youโ€™ve got this. Just keep that tongue of yours in check and donโ€™t react to any nonsense. Do you want me to walk in with you?โ€

โ€œDo I fuck.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s okay to be nervous, Joe.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not nervous.โ€

โ€œAnd itโ€™s okay to be scared, too.โ€

โ€œDo I look like Iโ€™m scared?โ€ I growled, aggravated by his incessant coddling. โ€œIโ€™m not a baby, Dar.โ€

โ€œI know youโ€™re not,โ€ my big brother conceded, as we walked up the path to Ballylaggin Community School โ€“ a journey he had taken every weekday for the past six years. His time at secondary school was over now, while mine was just beginning. โ€œI justย needย this to go well for you.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ I snorted. โ€œWell, we both know thatโ€™s not going to happen.โ€

โ€œThis is your fresh start, Joey,โ€ he said. โ€œWhatever happened in primary school is behind you now. Donโ€™t carry any of that trouble with you.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s no such thing as fresh starts,โ€ I drawled. โ€œJust different locations filled with the same bullshit.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re too young to be this cynical.โ€

โ€œAnd youโ€™re too smart to waste your time and breath on this pep talk,โ€ I countered. โ€œIโ€™m not Shannon, lad. I donโ€™t need the words or the hand-holding.โ€

โ€œIs it so wrong of me to want to see you off on your first day of secondary school?โ€

โ€œYou could have done that back at the house,โ€ I reminded him. โ€œYou didnโ€™t need to walk me to school. Iโ€™m not a baby.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re my baby brother.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve never been a baby anything, Dar.โ€

โ€œAlways so self-sufficient.โ€ Shaking his head, he gave me a sad smile. โ€œWell, maybe I wanted to spend some extra time with you.โ€

โ€œWe share a room,โ€ I deadpanned, shifting the ton of bricks that was my school bag onto my other shoulder. โ€œWe already spend enough time together.โ€

โ€œI love you, Joe,โ€ he threw me by saying. โ€œYou know that, right?โ€

โ€œYouย loveย me?โ€ Feet faltering, I turned to look up at him. โ€œWhat the hell is wrong with you?โ€

โ€œNothing,โ€ he replied, tone thick with emotion. โ€œIโ€™m justโ€ฆ I need you to know that.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ I demanded, feeling unnerved by his sudden declaration. It was out of place and felt all wrong to me. โ€œWhatโ€™s happening?โ€

โ€œNothing.โ€ Smiling, he reached down and ruffled my hair. โ€œNothingโ€™s happening, shithead. I just wanted to tell you.โ€

โ€œOkayโ€ฆโ€ I eyed him suspiciously, not sure if I entirely believed him. โ€œBut if you evenย thinkย about hugging me in front of all these people, I will kick you in the nuts.โ€

โ€œYour voice is starting to break,โ€ he chuckled. โ€œMy baby brother is growing up.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t need a deep voice to kick your ass,โ€ I shot back, hackles rising.

He rolled his eyes. โ€œSure thing, squeaky.โ€

โ€œDo all the girls here wear skirts that short?โ€ Eyes widening, I watched as a group of girls filed out off a school bus and onto the footpath in front of us. โ€œI take it all back, Dar.โ€ Delighted with life, I grinned up at my brother. โ€œI think Iโ€™m going to like secondary school.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t even think about it,โ€ Darren chuckled, ribbing me with his elbow. โ€œThose girls are in sixth year. Youโ€™re a baby first year to them.โ€

โ€œAlready told ya that Iโ€™ve never been a baby anything,โ€ I shot back with a wink before turning my attention back to the glorious view of bare legs and peachy asses.

โ€œArenโ€™t you a bit young for getting notions about girls?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m thirteen.โ€

โ€œNot until December.โ€

โ€œI bet Iโ€™ve seen more tits than you.โ€

โ€œMamโ€™s donโ€™t count.โ€

We both laughed, causing a few of girls in front to turn around.

โ€œOh my god! Darren Lynch!โ€ one of the blondeโ€™s squealed, giving my brother a warm smile, as she moved straight for him. โ€œWhat are you doing here? Didnโ€™t you get like a thousand points in your leaving cert last June? Thereโ€™s no way youโ€™re repeating sixth year?โ€

โ€œNo, not repeating. Just walking my little brother in for his first day,โ€ Darren replied, receiving the half-hug the girl offered him. โ€œAnd I could ask you the same question. What are you doing slumming it in a BCS uniform, Tommen girl?โ€

โ€œI, uh, transferred over here. Iโ€™m going to finish up sixth year at BCS,โ€ the blonde replied in a strained tone. โ€œItโ€™s, ah, sort of for the best, all things considered, you know?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ My brother nodded and sympathy filled his eyes, which confused the fuck out of me. โ€œI do.โ€

โ€œSo, howโ€™s everything going, Dar?โ€ She was quick to push on from whatever the hell had them eyeing each otherย meaningfully. I rolled my eyes and forced back the urge to hurl. โ€œI havenโ€™t seen you since that weekend.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve been around,โ€ he told her, scratching the back of his neck. โ€œJust dealing, you know?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ Another meaningful look passed between them. โ€œI know.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t,โ€ I decided to interject, because why the hell not? โ€œCare to explain what the hell youโ€™re both talking about?โ€

My brother sighed in resignation before reeling off introductions. โ€œCaoimhe, this mouthy shit is my little brother.โ€ He turned to me and gestured to the girl. โ€œJoe, this is Caoimhe Young. You were probably too young to remember her in primary school, but her little sister is friends with Shannon.โ€

Her blue eyes landed on my face, and she smiled. โ€œSo, youโ€™re the next Lynch in the pecking order, huh?โ€

โ€œApparently so.โ€ I shrugged noncommittedly before turning back to Darren. โ€œAre ya done with the trip down memory lane, or do I need to stand around for another ten minutes?โ€

โ€œOh boy, Dar,โ€ she laughed. โ€œYouโ€™re in trouble with this one, huh?โ€

โ€œTell me about it,โ€ my brother replied with a sigh. โ€œIt was good seeing you, Caoimhe.โ€ Catching hold of the back of my neck, he steered us around the group of girls and up the path towards the school. โ€œTake care of yourself.โ€

โ€œYou, too, Dar,โ€ she called after us. โ€œKeep in touch.โ€

โ€œKeep in touch?โ€ I shook my head and wrestled free from his hold. โ€œWhat the hell does that mean?โ€

โ€œWho knows,โ€ Darren muttered, steering me towards the gates of the school. โ€œYou know the way girls are.โ€

โ€œDid you have sex with her?โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ He stopped walking and swung me around to look at him. โ€œNo, I didnโ€™t haveย sexย with her. Why would you even ask me that?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t get all high and mighty on me,โ€ I laughed, playfully shoving his chest. โ€œI know youโ€™ve been with girls in the past.โ€

Darren sighed heavily. โ€œNot like that, I havenโ€™t.โ€

โ€œWell, I think she likes you,โ€ I offered up, falling into step alongside him once again. โ€œShe was looking at you with those gooey eyes.โ€

โ€œGooey eyes,โ€ Darren chuckled. โ€œYouโ€™re a dope.โ€

โ€œSheย was,โ€ I laughed. โ€œIโ€™m surprised she didnโ€™t swoon when she saw you.โ€ Clearing my throat, I pressed a hand to my forehead and mimicked, โ€œOh, Darren Lynch. Is that you my eyes can see? Be still my beating heart!โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re such a little shit,โ€ my brother laughed.

โ€œAnd youโ€™re a dark horse,โ€ I shot back with a wink, ribbing him with my elbow. โ€œGot anymore blondes lurking around school, waiting to fall at your feet? Because Iโ€™ll be happy to take them off your hands.โ€

โ€œPack it in,โ€ he chuckled, with a rueful shake of his head. โ€œHonestly, itโ€™s not like that. Sheโ€™s just a good friend.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Dar,โ€ I laughed. โ€œI know youโ€™re gay. Iโ€™m only messing with yaโ€”โ€œ

โ€œJesus Christ, Joey!โ€ Darren hissed, clamping a hand on my shoulder. He looked around us, eyes wild and panicked, before he released a breath and muttered, โ€œNot so loud, okay?โ€

โ€œWhy do you do that?โ€ I demanded, good mood forgotten, as I shook his hand off, feeling my temper rise. โ€œWhy do you hide who you are?โ€

He shook his head, blue eyes laced with pain. โ€œJoey.โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s bullshit, Dar,โ€ I pushed, unwilling to let it go. โ€œIโ€™m not ashamed of you, and you shouldnโ€™t be either.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not ashamed of myself,โ€ he replied quietly.

โ€œWell, good,โ€ I snapped. โ€œBecause you donโ€™t have shit to be ashamed of.โ€

โ€œYeah, well, according to Dad, I have.โ€

โ€œYeah, well, fuck Dad,โ€ I spat. โ€œHeโ€™s the one who should be ashamed of himself, not you.โ€

โ€œYou do realize that up until six years ago, being gay was a punishable crime in this country?โ€

โ€œYeah, and so were condoms and any other form of birth control,โ€ I growled. โ€œWhich just goes to show that the laws are bullshit.โ€

โ€œJoeโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThis country is backwards, Darren, you know that,โ€ I argued. โ€œYeah, itโ€™s getting better now, but we both know that the foundations on which our laws are built upon have a lot less to do with common sense than religion.โ€

โ€œI really donโ€™t want to talk about it, Joe.โ€

โ€œWell, I donโ€™t want to see you walking around the place with your tail between your legs when you have no reason to,โ€ I countered. โ€œItโ€™s bullshit, Darren. Every word that comes out of that manโ€™s mouth is utter bullshit, so donโ€™t let him make you feel bad about yourself. Dadโ€™s living in the dark ages, so donโ€™t you dare let him drag you back there with him.โ€

โ€œWhat do you propose I do, Joey?โ€ he asked in a weary tone. โ€œGo toe to toe with him?โ€

Yes.ย โ€œYou can take him.โ€

โ€œNo, I canโ€™t,โ€ he replied. โ€œBesides, not every disagreement in life has to result in a dog fight.โ€

โ€œIn our lives it does,โ€ I corrected hotly. โ€œSo, you better get your head in the fight and make damn sure that youโ€™re the biggest dog.โ€

โ€œLike you, squeaky?โ€

โ€œI might not be the biggest dog in the fight,โ€ I begrudgingly conceded. โ€œBut I always have the sharpest teeth.โ€

โ€œKind of like the saying; itโ€™s not the size of the dog that matters, itโ€™s the fight in the dog?โ€

I nodded. โ€œNow youโ€™re speaking my language.โ€

Darren gave me a strange look. โ€œSo, in your mind, itโ€™s a dog-eat-dog world that weโ€™re living in?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not in my mind, Dar. Itโ€™s a fact.โ€

โ€œYou know,โ€ he mused in a melancholy tone. โ€œI canโ€™t figure out if that backbone of yours will be your saving grace or your downfall.โ€

โ€œWhichever way it goes is fine by me,โ€ I said with a shrug. โ€œBecause I couldnโ€™t care less.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not true,โ€ he argued. โ€œYou care.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I laughed humorlessly. โ€œI really donโ€™t.โ€

โ€œI need you to start caring, Joey.โ€

โ€œI care,โ€ I grumbled. โ€œI care about you, and Shan, and Tadhg, and Olsโ€”โ€œ

โ€œI need you to start caring aboutย you, Joeโ€”โ€

โ€œHolyย shit.โ€

My feet came to an abrupt stop the minute my eyes landed on a tall blonde, with the face of an angel, sitting on the wall at the entrance of the school.

โ€œWhat?โ€ Darren demanded, looking around us. โ€œWhereโ€™s the fire?โ€

โ€œThere.โ€ Struck dumb at the sight of her, and with all notions gone of continuing any further conversation with my brother, I pointed to the girl whose long blonde hair was splaying all around her in the breeze. โ€œHer.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know her,โ€ my brother noted. โ€œShe must be a first year.โ€

Looking like nothing my eyes had ever seen, I watched as she sucked on a Chupa Chups lollypop, entirely uninterested in the lad attempting to talk to her, while her long legs dangled from the wall.

โ€œJesus Christ.โ€ I blew out a breath. โ€œI donโ€™t care if youโ€™re gay or not, lad. You canโ€™t deny that girl is the best-looking thing your eyes have ever seen.โ€

It was at the exact moment in time that her gaze flicked to mine.

The minute our eyes collided, I felt a pang of heat shoot straight to my chest.

Holy fuck.

When I met her gaze head on, I fully-expected her to blush and look away.

She didnโ€™t.

Instead, she tilted her head to one side and studied me with a similar look to the one I was sure that I was sporting.

Arching her brow, she slowly removed the lollypop from her mouth, and gave me an expectant look.

My gaze flicked questioningly to the dark-haired lad still trying and failing to garner her attention before returning to her face.

With a defiant tilt of her chin, she gave me a look that saidย what are you waiting for?

Well shit.

Whatย wasย I waiting for?

โ€œSteady up, baby brother,โ€ Darren chuckled, as he forcefully walked me up the path towards the main building andย awayย from the blonde. โ€œSheโ€™s cute, but donโ€™t throw your hat in the ring just yet. I promise there will be fifty more girls in your year that look just as lovely.โ€

Doubtful.

โ€œI donโ€™t want fifty more girls,โ€ I replied, twisting back to find her still watching me. โ€œI just wantย thatย girl.โ€

โ€œOh, to be a first year again.โ€ Laughing, Darren dragged me along with him until she was out of sight. โ€œIf Iโ€™ve taught you nothing else these past twelve years, then remember this; keep your temper in check, your head in the books, your ass off the streets, and your hands off girls that look like that.โ€

โ€œLike what?โ€

โ€œLike they have heartbreak written all over them.โ€

โ€œSo, in other words, spend the next six years of secondary school living like a priest,โ€ I grumbled, breaking free of him when we reached the school. โ€œWhere do I sign up?โ€

โ€œHey, thatโ€™s what I did,โ€ my brother chuckled, thoroughly amused by my disgust. โ€œIt worked well for me.โ€

โ€œBecause youโ€™re shit craic,โ€ I told him. โ€œSeriously, Dar. Itโ€™s a wonder weโ€™re related at all.โ€

โ€œWell, we are,โ€ he reminded me before pulling me in for a hug. โ€œIโ€™ll always be your brother, no matter what, okay? Donโ€™t ever forget it.โ€

โ€œWhat did I tell you?โ€ I hissed, scrambling away from him before anyone saw me hugging myย brother of all people. โ€œI should follow through and kick you in the nuts for that.โ€

โ€œTake care of yourself.โ€ His voice was thick with emotion as he watched me scowl at him. โ€œI love you.โ€

โ€œJesus, relax with the love bullshit,โ€ I grumbled, feeling acutely uncomfortable. โ€œIโ€™m starting secondary school, asshole, youโ€™re not sending me off to war.โ€

He nodded stiffly. โ€œI know.โ€

Feeling off-balance, I eyed him warily before shaking my head and walking off in the direction of the entrance.

Stop.

Donโ€™t go.

Somethingโ€™s wrong.

Turn back.

This is all wrong.

โ€œDar?โ€ Hovering uncertainly, I turned back to find him already walking away. โ€œIโ€™ll see you after school, yeah?โ€

My brother didnโ€™t answer.

โ€œDar?โ€

He didnโ€™t turn back to look at me, either.

โ€œDarren?โ€

Instead, he pulled his hood up and kept walking away from me.

โ€œSo, is that guy your keeper, or can you think for yourself?โ€ a female voice asked, and I spun around to find none other than blondie from the wall standing in front of me โ€“ and holy fuck if she wasnโ€™t even better looking close up.

With all notions of Darrenโ€™s weird farewell long forgotten, I focused entirely on the face looking up at me.

High cheekbones, pink pouty lips, big green eyes, and hair that looked like something out of a magazine, she was, hands down, the best-looking thing my eyes had ever seen. โ€œI can definitely think for myself.โ€

โ€œYou saw me back there,โ€ she stated evenly, green eyes snaring me.

โ€œI did.โ€

โ€œYou kept walking.โ€

I nodded like a fool. โ€œI did.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t do that again.โ€

Fuck me.ย โ€œI wonโ€™t.โ€

She looked me over once more before nodding in approval. โ€œYouโ€™re beautiful.โ€

Well shit.ย โ€œLikewise.โ€

โ€œHm.โ€ Her lips tipped up. โ€œSo, do you have a name, boy-who-can-think-for-himself?โ€

โ€œDoes it matter?โ€ I countered, needing to regain some ground I had lost to this powerhouse of a girl. โ€œWe both know that youโ€™ll be calling me baby by the end of the day.โ€

She licked her lips to bury her smile. โ€œIs that so?โ€

I stepped closer. โ€œYou tell me, blondie.โ€

Now, she did, and it was a glorious sight. โ€œOkay, that was seriously smooth.โ€

I smirked. โ€œThanks.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m Aoife,โ€ she laughed, holding her hand out to me.

โ€œJoey,โ€ I replied, accepting her small hand in mine.

โ€œJoey.โ€ Shaking my hand, she tilted her head to one side, and studied me without a hint of shyness. โ€œYour name suits you.โ€

โ€œI could say the same thing about you,โ€ I replied. โ€œYour name means radiance and beauty, right?โ€

She grinned. โ€œYou know your Irish.โ€

Yeah, I knew my Irish, but notย thatย well.

There had been a girl in my class at primary school named Aoife, who had constantly droned on about how she had been named after an Irish warrior queen, with a level of beauty that was rumored to rival that of Helen of Troy.

I wasnโ€™t, however, about to tellย thisย particular Aoife that.

Not when I needed every advantage I could get.

โ€œSo, what class have you been assigned to?โ€ she asked, retrieving her folded-up timetable from the pocket of her short, pleated skirt. โ€œIโ€™m in First Year 3.โ€

Fuck if I knew.

I straightened out the crumpled-up ball of paper that was my class timetable for the school year. I was fucking thrilled when I read the wordsย First Year 3ย on the page. โ€œSame here.โ€

She was in my class.

Get in there!

Maybe my luckย wasย changing.

โ€œSo, youโ€™re as mediocre a student as I am,โ€ she laughed. โ€œMy brother got assigned to First Year 1. Thatโ€™s the class for the brainiacs.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re a twin?โ€

She nodded. โ€œFor my sins.โ€

โ€œSo, weโ€™re the third smartest class?โ€

โ€œOr the third thickest,โ€ she laughed. โ€œWhichever way your glass is filled.โ€

โ€œWhy? How many classes has our year been split into?โ€

โ€œFour.โ€

โ€œJesus,โ€ I laughed. โ€œThat doesnโ€™t say much for us, does it?โ€

โ€œNope.โ€ She grinned back at me. โ€œNot a whole pile. So, what primary school are you coming from?โ€

โ€œSacred Heart,โ€ I replied. โ€œYou?โ€

โ€œSt. Bernadetteโ€™s,โ€ she said with a grimace. โ€œThatโ€™s theโ€”โ€œ

โ€œAll-girls primary school run by the nuns outside of the town?โ€ I winced in sympathy. โ€œWell, thatโ€™s shit luck on you, huh?โ€

โ€œYep. Eight years with the nuns. Canโ€™t you see my halo shining?โ€

โ€œOh yeah, itโ€™s blinding.โ€

โ€œAccording to Sister Alphonsus, I should be continuing my education in an all-girls environment,โ€ she mused with a devilish smile. โ€œApparently, I have a wild streak in me, with a penchant for theย male formย that no amount of prayer can eliminate.โ€ She rolled her eyes. โ€œAll because I said I thought the guy playing Jesus in a movie they showed us was gorgeous.โ€

I arched a brow. โ€œGorgeous?โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ she laughed. โ€œHeย was.โ€

โ€œWell, it sounds to me like you need to spend less time on your knees praying and more time โ€”โ€œ

โ€œDonโ€™t say it,โ€ she warned reaching up to cover my mouth with her hand.

โ€œWith theย male form,โ€ I chuckled, peeling her fingers off my lips with my hand.

โ€œSo, should I spend more time with the male form in general?โ€ she laughed, and somehow our fingers were entwined now. โ€œOr with you? Because itโ€™s safe to say that Iโ€™m impressed with the male form standing in front of me.โ€

โ€œIs that your way of telling me that you donโ€™t have a boyfriend?โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s my way of telling you that Iย willย have a boyfriend once you ask me.โ€

โ€œJesus.โ€ My heartrate sped up. โ€œYouโ€™re not backwards about anything, are you?โ€

She winked and slid her school bag off her shoulder. โ€œWhereโ€™s the fun in that?โ€

Thrown off kilter by this girl, I took the bag she held out for me and slung it over my free shoulder.

โ€œThere,โ€ she said with an approving nod, admiring her bright pink bag on my shoulder. โ€œThat should do it.โ€

โ€œShould do what?โ€

โ€œWarn the other girls away.โ€

โ€œWarn the other girls away?โ€ My brows rose up. โ€œDid you justย markย me with your bag?โ€

โ€œI sure did,โ€ she replied, smiling sweetly up at me before turning on her heels and sauntering off in the direction of the school. โ€œNow, letโ€™s go,ย baby.โ€

I laughed, because, in all honesty, what else could I do?

I had a distinct feeling that I would be doing a lot of following after this girl.

Still, my feet moved after her.
