Chapter no 44 – Sullivan

Destroy the Day (Defy the Night, #3)

When I hear the carriage rattling down the lane, I know. The cottage is closed up tight against the weather, and we have a fire blazing in the hearth, but I throw a scarf around my neck and head out into the swirling snow anyway.

I half expect a full contingent of guards and soldiers to be following them, but I only see two horses pulling the carriage.

Good, I think, as I shiver in the chill. Tessa was smart. This is already risky enough. My heart settles a bit.

A second later, the door bounces open behind me, and a cloak is thrown over my shoulders. โ€œHonestly. If youโ€™re not careful, youโ€™ll catch your death of cold and youโ€™ll miss your chance at seeing him.โ€

Iโ€™m anxious now, so my answer is just as peevish. โ€œI donโ€™t see how thatโ€™s possible with you constantly throwing clothes and blankets on me.โ€

Quintโ€™s eyes flash my way with feigned annoyance. I reach up to brush snowflakes out of his red hair, and the annoyance is replaced with a smile.

Miller, I think.ย Not Quint.

But I canโ€™t get used to it. Even after six months, I donโ€™t want to call him by any other name. I might be accustomed to Sullivan myself, but Quint . . . โ€‹will always be Quint.

โ€œWe must be formal,โ€ I warn. โ€œWe do not know who might be in attendance, and we cannot risk giving ourselves away.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re cautioning me?โ€ The annoyance is back. โ€œI am not the one who chose to send a letter directly to theย palace.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not as if I signed it,โ€ I snap. โ€œNo one is watching for letters from a long dead king.โ€

Weโ€™ve been arguing about this for a week.

But then the carriage is drawing to a stop, the horses throwing up slush, and to my absolute amazement, the two palace guards whoโ€™ve driven the carriage are Thorin and Saeth.

As soon as they see us, they do a double take. Then Saeth grabs Thorinโ€™s arm. His eyes are wide.

โ€œYouโ€™re a ghost,โ€ he whispers.

โ€œNo,โ€ I say. โ€œJust lucky.โ€

They move to climb down from the front of the carriage, likely to do their duty and open the door, but I donโ€™t have the mettle to wait any longer. I stride right up and open it myself.

Then I find myself facing my brother, the king.

The shock in his face is so pure. The wonder. The relief. Heโ€™s frozen in place as if heโ€™s afraid to move, as if heโ€™s afraid toย blink, his hands braced on either side of the doorway. Iโ€™m frozen as well, because I havenโ€™t seen him since the moment he got on that ship toย Ostriary. Heโ€™s so familiar and so different all at once, and I canโ€™t stop staring at him. Our breath fogs in the air between us.

Then I reach out to rough up his hair the way I did when he was a boy. โ€œItโ€™s all right, Cory.โ€

He practically falls out of the carriage to give me a hug. His arms are so tight against my back that I can feel his heartbeat. His breath shakes, just a little, but so does mine.

I grip him back just as tightly. โ€œI missed you, too,โ€ I say. โ€œItโ€™s been so hard to stay away. Quintโ€”ah,ย Millerโ€”has been after me for sending the letter in the first place. But I had to tell you.โ€

He draws back to look at me. He says absolutely nothing, but then he hugs me again.

I hug him just as tightly. โ€œWeย canย go inside,โ€ I say. โ€œIf it pleases you, Your Majesty.โ€

Iโ€™m partially teasing, partially not, and he pulls back again. Heโ€™s holding me at armโ€™s length, his eyes searching my face as if he still canโ€™t believe it. โ€œThereโ€™s a part of me that wants to punch you, you know.โ€

โ€œI do know,โ€ I say. โ€œAnd Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

Tessa moves close, and she sets a hand on his arm. โ€œAnd thereโ€™s a part ofย himย that deserves it.โ€

That seems to strike Corrick like an arrow, because he frowns and pulls back farther. โ€œI do.โ€ But then he grabs Quint in a hug as well, but only for a moment. He draws back and gives him a look. โ€œWhen I told you to take care of my brother, Iโ€™ll have you know that this isnโ€™t quite what I had in mind.โ€

Quint smiles, looking a bit too pleased with himself. โ€œWe were sharing a house together. I simply couldnโ€™t help it.โ€

Corrick smiles in return, but I donโ€™t. I made mention of Quintย in my letter to my brother, of course, but this is one thing that Iโ€™ve wondered about for the better part of a year.

โ€œThere were so many things I never discussed with you,โ€ I say to him. โ€œWere you very surprised?โ€

โ€œSurprised?โ€ He takes a step back, regarding me. โ€œOf course not. Quint could charm a brick wall into lively conversation.โ€

โ€œBrick walls are oftenย easier,โ€ Quint says, and Tessa laughs softly.

For some reason, that makes me blush, just a little. โ€œNoโ€”I meantโ€”โ€ I break off. โ€œNever mind. Itโ€™s cold. We should go inside.โ€

But Corrick frowns. โ€œYou meant . . .โ€ His eyebrows go up. โ€œYou thought I didnโ€™t know?โ€

I stare back at him, but the words catch in my throat and refuse to form.

They donโ€™tย needย to form, because he bursts out with, โ€œHow could I not know? You made eyes at that stable boy forย months!โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I sputter.

โ€œEvery single time we went into the Wilds.โ€ His voice drops to a mockery of mine. โ€œ โ€˜Go find a game of cards, Cory. Doesnโ€™t that look like a lively dance, little brother? Iโ€™m going to go see some horses. Why donโ€™t you join those boys by the fire. Iโ€™ll be back in an hour.โ€™ โ€ He rolls his eyes. โ€œI was young, but I wasnโ€™tย stupid. Lord, Harristan. No one likes horsesย thatย much.โ€

Quint bursts out laughing. Even the guards look like theyโ€™re trying to hide a smile.

I look between the two of them. โ€œDonโ€™t tell me. You knewย this, too?โ€

Thorin and Saeth exchange a glance, but itโ€™s Saeth who shrugs. โ€œThere was that one footman who always seemed to make you tongue-tied. What was his name?โ€

โ€œMurphy,โ€ Thorin says immediately.

Corrickโ€™s eyes light up. โ€œThatโ€™s right! You used to spill your tea every time, too!โ€

I simply cannot believe this.

Quint leans over to give me a kiss on the cheek. โ€œSo charming.โ€

โ€œAll right,โ€ I snap. โ€œEnough. Letโ€™s go inside with all of you. Iโ€™ll take the crown back if this is how itโ€™s going to be.โ€

Quint heats some mulled wine while we sit by the fire. At first the guards moved to take a position by the wall, but I urged them to join us, too. It settled something in my heart to see them look to Corrick first, to know heโ€™s won their loyalty the way I did. Corrick gave me a sly look and said, โ€œOf course you should sit with us. Youโ€™re friends of Sullivanโ€™s.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m so glad to see you both,โ€ I tell them. โ€œAdam, are those a captainโ€™s bars on your sleeve?โ€

Saeth nods, then glances at Thorin. โ€œIโ€™m trying to make sure no one has cause to close ranks againstย me.โ€

Thorin smiles. โ€œOnly when we play cards.โ€

โ€œAnd you,ย Wolf?โ€ I say. โ€œDo you still see Alice?โ€

His cheeks turn pink. โ€œI do.โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™re getting married,โ€ says Saeth.

Thorinโ€™s blush deepens. โ€œIโ€™d invite you both to come, but I expect youโ€™d be recognized.โ€

โ€œI could say the same thing about mine,โ€ says Corrick, and my eyes snap to his.

โ€œVery likely,โ€ I say, and my voice goes a bit rough. Thereโ€™s a pulse of longing in my heart that Iโ€™ve felt ever since news about theย royal engagement made its way to Mosswell. โ€œI donโ€™t think I could go anywhere near the Royal Sector. Not for some time yet.โ€

But I glance at Quint and wonder if I could convince him to go. We argued for a week over sending a letter, and it was worth it. Convincing him to sneak into the Royal Sector might take a month.

I glance across at Cory, and heโ€™s watching me like he knows what Iโ€™m thinking. His blue eyes are intent and daring. It reminds me of a thousand moments when we were younger, sitting across a table, waiting until dark when we could escape the trappings of the palace to race across the gardens and sprint through the tunnels into the Wilds.

Tessa looks between us, and she smiles. โ€œIโ€™ll have an invitation sent anyway,โ€ she says. โ€œIf any of you are good atย anything, itโ€™s sneaking.โ€

โ€œOn that note,โ€ says Saeth, โ€œhow on earth did you escape? I saw the rubble from the explosion. Did you make it to one of the tunnels?โ€

โ€œYesโ€”by sheer luck,โ€ I say. โ€œAfter we lit the fuse, we ran. We got to the stairwell we used to escape that night, which was farther than I expected. But Annabeth was right. The palaceย didย collapse into the lowest levels. We were trapped below for a time.โ€ I hesitate and meet Quintโ€™s eyes across the room. โ€œTwo days. Maybe three.โ€

โ€œI had a broken arm,โ€ Quint says. He gestures to me. โ€œSully had broken ribs. We were filthy and hurting when we were finally able to crawl out.โ€

โ€œBut if you escaped,โ€ says Corrick, โ€œwhy didnโ€™t you simply go back to Consul Beeching?โ€

โ€œBy that point, too much had happened,โ€ I say. โ€œYou were already home! They were calling you king! Consul Beeching hadย kept his promise. Rumors were saying that King Harristan had sacrificed himself to save the people from the wrongdoings of the consuls. We kept hearing it in the streets.โ€ I shrug. โ€œToo much had gone wrong. Too many people had been hurt. The wheels had already been put in motion. I couldnโ€™t undo that.โ€

โ€œBut you could have toldย me,โ€ Corrick says, and then I hear the pain undercutting the anger in his tone.

โ€œNo, Cory,โ€ I say evenly. โ€œI couldnโ€™t.โ€

He glares at me, drawing himself up, facing me in a way he never would have in the past.

In that one shift, I can see how heโ€™s grown into this role.

โ€œYouโ€™re proving my point,โ€ I say. โ€œIf youย knew, you never would have risen to be king. You always would have known I was in the shadows, judging your choices, your movements, your ideas.โ€

โ€œThen why did you tell me at all?โ€ he demands.

I reach out and ruffle his hair again. โ€œBecause I love you too much.โ€

He catches my wrist, but then he grips my hand tight. His eyes gleam. โ€œIโ€™m very glad you did.โ€

โ€œSo am I,โ€ says Tessa.

โ€œBesides,โ€ says Quint as he fetches the kettle to pour steaming cups of mulled wine, โ€œI rather like having a cottage in Mosswell. The village gossip is downrightย vicious, and Sully can play with his horses all dayโ€”โ€

โ€œWait. You reallyย doย have a stable?โ€ Tessa says in surprise.

โ€œOh, yes,โ€ I say. โ€œFarther down the lane. Twenty horses. We did quite a business in the fall. Should have some foals come spring, too.โ€

Corrick looks between us in wonder. โ€œTwentyย horses? How did you makeย thatย happen with just the clothes off your backs?โ€

Quint and I exchange a glance. โ€œOh, escaping from the palace took quite a bit of time, and once we knew youโ€™d arrived safely, itโ€™s rather possible we snuck back through some other tunnels because we knew how to reach the treasuryโ€”โ€

โ€œThe looters!โ€ Corrick smacks me on the arm. โ€œYouย thief!โ€

I smile. โ€œYouย outlaw.โ€

Tessa lifts her cup. โ€œCheers, gentlemen. We can all drink to that.โ€
