Chapter no 29 – Tessa

Destroy the Day (Defy the Night, #3)

Tessa

Erik hates literally everything about this plan.

I know this because heโ€™s told me at least a thousand times a day since I first announced it.

โ€œIf I do this and we succeed, Rian will take us home,โ€ I keep telling him.

โ€œIf you do this and weย fail, you could be dead,โ€ he keeps responding. Then heโ€™ll grip his waist and try not to wince, because I know heโ€™s still in pain.

โ€œWell, if Iโ€™m dead, then it wonโ€™t matter at all!โ€ Iโ€™ve started snapping, just because Iโ€™m as nervous as he is.

Olive and Ellmo have begun to exchange glances when we start this up. She usually drags her son out of the house while he keeps hanging back, wanting to watch the fight.

But now itโ€™s nightfall, and Ellmo is at the palace with Anya and some of the others, because Olive wonโ€™t risk her son getting anywhere near Oren Crane.

I honestly didnโ€™t expect her to risk herself, but sheโ€™s here at the house with me, waiting while Rianโ€™s people are outside, checking the coastline, preparing the house to look like itโ€™s holding a prisoner.

I expected dozens of armed men, but there arenโ€™t.

โ€œDo you think I made a poor choice?โ€ I whisper to Olive.

She passes me a cup of coffee with milk and honey and says nothing for a long moment. โ€œI think my uncle terrorized these islands for a long time. I think Rian sees a chance to finallyย win, and heโ€™s going to take it.โ€

I accept the coffee, but I donโ€™t take a sip. โ€œThat doesnโ€™t answer my question.โ€

She looks at me. โ€œYou shouldnโ€™t have to risk yourself, Tessa. You arenโ€™t a part of this war.โ€ She pauses. โ€œThis war shouldnโ€™t be happening at all anymore. It was over.โ€

I swallow, thinking of the revolution in Kandala. The way Harristan and Corrick tried to keep the peace. โ€œWas it really over, or was your uncle biding his time, waiting for another chance to take over?โ€

She doesnโ€™t say anything to that.

โ€œWas he gone fromย thisย island,โ€ I say carefully, โ€œwhile he was terrorizing another one?โ€

Her eyes flick up. โ€œThe bridges are down. Communication is slow. I donโ€™t know.โ€

โ€œRian took Orenโ€™s daughter prisoner. Now heโ€™s going to takeย Orenย prisoner.โ€

She sighs heavily.

So do I.

Erik appears in the doorway of my bedroom. Heโ€™s wearing the utilitarian parts of his guard uniform, and he clicks a bolt into aย crossbow. โ€œMaybe we can get them in the room together and I can shoot them both,โ€ he says sourly.

โ€œWe need Rian to get usย home,โ€ I say.

He grunts. โ€œI still donโ€™t trust him.โ€

โ€œHe made a bargain,โ€ I said. โ€œIโ€™m going to hold him to it.โ€

But a little voice inside me whispers that Iโ€™m doing this while tricking someone else, the same way Rian tricked me and Corrick.

Oren is someone who did horrible things. And Iโ€™m doing this with good reason.

But is it justified? Were Corrickโ€™s actions justified? Were Rianโ€™s?

Ugh.Everything is all tangled up, and Iโ€™m still not sure about any of it.

โ€œDo you still have your dagger?โ€ Erik says.

I pat my hip, because I do, but Rian appears in the doorway. โ€œSheโ€™s a prisoner. She wouldnโ€™t have aย dagger.โ€

Erik steps between him and me. โ€œNo one should get close enough to know the difference.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re wrong,โ€ Rian says. โ€œSomeoneย might. Iโ€™m not risking this on a technicality. I wouldnโ€™t have a hundred soldiers guarding one girl, especially if sheโ€™s supposedlyย hidden. Iโ€™d barely have more thanย one. Oren wonโ€™t come close if heโ€™s spooked, and itโ€™ll ruin this whole plan.โ€

Now I understand why there arenโ€™t dozens of soldiers outside.

โ€œSo you didnโ€™t bring . . .ย anyone?โ€ I whisper.

He blinks, then gives me a wounded look. โ€œOf course I brought my people,โ€ he says. โ€œI have a hundred men waiting in the road. But we need to draw him off the water. You donโ€™t understand why heโ€™s always been so hard to catch. Oren has always been behind his cannons. He has a dozen henchmen doing his bidding. I wouldnโ€™tย be surprised if he sends someone to make sure youโ€™re reallyย hereย first.โ€

โ€œSo sheโ€™sย bait,โ€ Olive snaps. โ€œNot a decoy.โ€

Gwyn Tagas pokes her head in the room. โ€œRian. A lookout spotted a ship on the water.โ€

My heart gives a lurch. None of this is what I expected at all. โ€œI donโ€™t look anything like Bella,โ€ I say. โ€œTheyโ€™ll know Iโ€™m not her if they get close.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ll tie you up and put that over your head. Iโ€™ll guard you myself.โ€ Rian tosses a cloth sack in my lap.

The cloth falls over my fingers, and I stare down at it in shock.

Iโ€™m remembering the last time I had a cloth sack tied over my head.

He drops to a crouch in front of me. โ€œTessa,โ€ he says quietly. โ€œI know you hate me. But I never lied about the most important parts. I care about my people just as much as you care about yoursโ€”and I know you see that.โ€ He pauses. โ€œI didnโ€™t force you to do this. You volunteeredโ€”just like you volunteered to help people in the villages.โ€ His gray eyes seek mine, and I remember what they looked like when we were clinging to the rigging, thirty feet above the ocean. โ€œYou can help them again.โ€

I swallow, thinking of everyone in Kandala waiting for us to return. โ€œI said Iโ€™d do it, and I will.โ€

He lets out a breath, and relief blooms in his eyes. โ€œThank you.โ€ He presses a palm to my cheek. โ€œI swear to you, Iโ€™ll be right here the wholeโ€”โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ I straighten, pulling away. โ€œRocco will be my guard.โ€

Rian stares back at me. โ€œTessaโ€”โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s my requirement,โ€ I say. โ€œIf you still want me to do this, I want Rocco.โ€ I hold his eyes. โ€œNot you.โ€

Rian stands. He looks at Erik. โ€œYouโ€™re still injured.โ€

โ€œI only need my hand to shoot a crossbow.โ€

Rian scowls. โ€œI will notโ€”โ€

โ€œHow far away was the ship?โ€ Olive says. โ€œDo you have other people to move into position?โ€

Rian swears. โ€œFine.โ€ He tosses a length of rope at my feet, then glares at Erik. โ€œMake sure sheโ€™s really bound. If this fails because of you, nothing she says will save you.โ€

Then heโ€™s through the door before any of us can respond.

Erik gingerly bends to fetch the rope.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ I whisper. โ€œAre you sure you canโ€”โ€

โ€œOf course I can, Miss Tessa. I wouldnโ€™t have left you with him regardless.โ€

โ€œNo matter what happens, I wonโ€™t let him harm you.โ€

Erikโ€™s eyes meet mine. โ€œIโ€™m not afraid of him.โ€ He looks up, past me, at Olive. โ€œDo you have a safe place to hide?โ€

She nods. โ€œIโ€™m going into the barn.โ€

โ€œAnd Ellmo is safe?โ€

Her face softens. โ€œYes. Heโ€™s soaking himself in sugar and cocoa in the palace. He hasnโ€™t seen Anya in ages. I think theyโ€™re baking something sweet.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€ He uncoils the rope. โ€œGive me your hands, Miss Tessa.โ€

When I hold them out, he looks up at Olive again while he loops the rope around my wrists. โ€œDo you have a weapon?โ€ he says to her.

โ€œI stashed my crossbow,โ€ she says.

โ€œLivvy!โ€ Rian calls from somewhere outside. โ€œYou need to get out of there.โ€

Olive doesnโ€™t move.

Erik doesnโ€™t tie my wrists tightly atย all, then reaches for my ankles next. โ€œWhat about a dagger?โ€ he says to Olive.

โ€œI have a blade hidden under my skirts.โ€ Her voice is serious, but she gives him a wink. โ€œYou really are a big brother, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œIn truth, Iโ€™m the youngest.โ€ He tugs the knot at my anklesโ€”again, too looseโ€”and stands.

โ€œLivvy!โ€ Rian calls again, and Olive scowls.

โ€œGo,โ€ I say to her, and I hate that my voice is breathy. โ€œBe safe.โ€

โ€œYouย be safe,โ€ she says.

I swallow and nod briskly.

She still doesnโ€™t leave. Instead, she smacks Erik on the arm. โ€œAndย youย keep her safe. I havenโ€™t had a friend inย ages, so youโ€™d better not let anything happen to her. Do you hear me, you bigโ€”โ€

He takes hold of her waist and kisses her.

Itโ€™s not a little kiss either. I gasp out loud. I think my cheeks are turning pink.

Hersdefinitely are. A small sound escapes her throat.

Erik lets her go. โ€œTrust me.โ€

Sheโ€™s staring up at him. โ€œI do.โ€

His eyes flick at the doorway. โ€œGo, before he comes in here to get you, and I have to shoot him in the face.โ€

Her flush deepens, but she nods quickly, and then, without another word, sheโ€™s gone.

Erik turns back to me. โ€œDonโ€™t you say a word.โ€

โ€œCan I say I appreciate the distraction?โ€

That makes him smile. He drops to one knee again, and I donโ€™t miss the slight sound of pain on his exhale.

โ€œYouโ€™re still hurting,โ€ I say.

โ€œEh. Not like before.โ€ He shrugs it off and draws his dagger. โ€œIโ€™m going to slip this under your thigh,โ€ he says, and his voice is very low, like heโ€™s worried heโ€™ll be overheard. โ€œIf someone getsย close to you, if anyoneย touchesย you, I want you to use it. Point down, just like I showed you.โ€

I think about the times Iโ€™ve practiced in the barn, which just now feels completely inadequate. โ€œI wonโ€™t be able to seeโ€”โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t care. Anyone on our side wonโ€™t be sneaking up on you. Move your leg. Iโ€™m sure Rian is going to look in soon, and I donโ€™t want him to see.โ€

I inhale sharply and obey. He slips the dagger under my thigh, the hilt pressing against the skin behind my knee. I can feel the danger of it, like a promise. His brown eyes look into mine.

โ€œItโ€™s all right to fight for what you believe in,โ€ he says.

I frown. โ€œAm I fighting for whatย Iย believe in, or am I fighting for what Rian believes in?โ€

Erik goes still for a moment, considering that. โ€œIโ€™ve heard enough about Oren Crane to know he shouldnโ€™t be ruling a country.โ€

โ€œShould Rian?โ€ I say, thinking of the steps Rian has taken to get to this point. But my words are lost, because another shout comes from outside.

โ€œDouse that lantern! The ship is drawing closer.โ€

Erik disappears from my side. The room goes dark.

Then heโ€™s back in a heartbeat, and the cloth of the hood brushes against my hair. I remember another night in the dark just like this, when my hands were bound, and I was left in the dark to wait for my fate.

โ€œIโ€™ll be out of sight, Miss Tessa. But Iโ€™ll be here.โ€ Erik ties the hood, and then heโ€™s gone.

I shiver at his sudden absence. I have to close my eyes and pretend the darkness is intentional. The dagger under my leg presses into my thigh. Iโ€™m remembering a carriage ride. Blue eyes daringย mine. Corrick offering me his dagger, when I was terrified of everything Iโ€™d learned. Offering meย escape.

Oh, Corrick. My love.

I miss him so much that my heart aches. I can hear his voice, smell his scent, feel his touch. Iโ€™d give anything for him to be here now.

But I stop the sob before it can form. Heโ€™s not here. I am. And maybe Rian has made mistakes, but so did Harristan. So did Corrick. So have I. Weโ€™re all just doing our best with the information we have.

So I shift my weight against that dagger, and I tug my wrists to see how loose the rope is.

When Oren Crane comes, Iโ€™m ready.
