Tessa
Erik hates literally everything about this plan.
I know this because heโs told me at least a thousand times a day since I first announced it.
โIf I do this and we succeed, Rian will take us home,โ I keep telling him.
โIf you do this and weย fail, you could be dead,โ he keeps responding. Then heโll grip his waist and try not to wince, because I know heโs still in pain.
โWell, if Iโm dead, then it wonโt matter at all!โ Iโve started snapping, just because Iโm as nervous as he is.
Olive and Ellmo have begun to exchange glances when we start this up. She usually drags her son out of the house while he keeps hanging back, wanting to watch the fight.
But now itโs nightfall, and Ellmo is at the palace with Anya and some of the others, because Olive wonโt risk her son getting anywhere near Oren Crane.
I honestly didnโt expect her to risk herself, but sheโs here at the house with me, waiting while Rianโs people are outside, checking the coastline, preparing the house to look like itโs holding a prisoner.
I expected dozens of armed men, but there arenโt.
โDo you think I made a poor choice?โ I whisper to Olive.
She passes me a cup of coffee with milk and honey and says nothing for a long moment. โI think my uncle terrorized these islands for a long time. I think Rian sees a chance to finallyย win, and heโs going to take it.โ
I accept the coffee, but I donโt take a sip. โThat doesnโt answer my question.โ
She looks at me. โYou shouldnโt have to risk yourself, Tessa. You arenโt a part of this war.โ She pauses. โThis war shouldnโt be happening at all anymore. It was over.โ
I swallow, thinking of the revolution in Kandala. The way Harristan and Corrick tried to keep the peace. โWas it really over, or was your uncle biding his time, waiting for another chance to take over?โ
She doesnโt say anything to that.
โWas he gone fromย thisย island,โ I say carefully, โwhile he was terrorizing another one?โ
Her eyes flick up. โThe bridges are down. Communication is slow. I donโt know.โ
โRian took Orenโs daughter prisoner. Now heโs going to takeย Orenย prisoner.โ
She sighs heavily.
So do I.
Erik appears in the doorway of my bedroom. Heโs wearing the utilitarian parts of his guard uniform, and he clicks a bolt into aย crossbow. โMaybe we can get them in the room together and I can shoot them both,โ he says sourly.
โWe need Rian to get usย home,โ I say.
He grunts. โI still donโt trust him.โ
โHe made a bargain,โ I said. โIโm going to hold him to it.โ
But a little voice inside me whispers that Iโm doing this while tricking someone else, the same way Rian tricked me and Corrick.
Oren is someone who did horrible things. And Iโm doing this with good reason.
But is it justified? Were Corrickโs actions justified? Were Rianโs?
Ugh.Everything is all tangled up, and Iโm still not sure about any of it.
โDo you still have your dagger?โ Erik says.
I pat my hip, because I do, but Rian appears in the doorway. โSheโs a prisoner. She wouldnโt have aย dagger.โ
Erik steps between him and me. โNo one should get close enough to know the difference.โ
โYouโre wrong,โ Rian says. โSomeoneย might. Iโm not risking this on a technicality. I wouldnโt have a hundred soldiers guarding one girl, especially if sheโs supposedlyย hidden. Iโd barely have more thanย one. Oren wonโt come close if heโs spooked, and itโll ruin this whole plan.โ
Now I understand why there arenโt dozens of soldiers outside.
โSo you didnโt bring . . .ย anyone?โ I whisper.
He blinks, then gives me a wounded look. โOf course I brought my people,โ he says. โI have a hundred men waiting in the road. But we need to draw him off the water. You donโt understand why heโs always been so hard to catch. Oren has always been behind his cannons. He has a dozen henchmen doing his bidding. I wouldnโtย be surprised if he sends someone to make sure youโre reallyย hereย first.โ
โSo sheโsย bait,โ Olive snaps. โNot a decoy.โ
Gwyn Tagas pokes her head in the room. โRian. A lookout spotted a ship on the water.โ
My heart gives a lurch. None of this is what I expected at all. โI donโt look anything like Bella,โ I say. โTheyโll know Iโm not her if they get close.โ
โWeโll tie you up and put that over your head. Iโll guard you myself.โ Rian tosses a cloth sack in my lap.
The cloth falls over my fingers, and I stare down at it in shock.
Iโm remembering the last time I had a cloth sack tied over my head.
He drops to a crouch in front of me. โTessa,โ he says quietly. โI know you hate me. But I never lied about the most important parts. I care about my people just as much as you care about yoursโand I know you see that.โ He pauses. โI didnโt force you to do this. You volunteeredโjust like you volunteered to help people in the villages.โ His gray eyes seek mine, and I remember what they looked like when we were clinging to the rigging, thirty feet above the ocean. โYou can help them again.โ
I swallow, thinking of everyone in Kandala waiting for us to return. โI said Iโd do it, and I will.โ
He lets out a breath, and relief blooms in his eyes. โThank you.โ He presses a palm to my cheek. โI swear to you, Iโll be right here the wholeโโ
โNo.โ I straighten, pulling away. โRocco will be my guard.โ
Rian stares back at me. โTessaโโ
โThatโs my requirement,โ I say. โIf you still want me to do this, I want Rocco.โ I hold his eyes. โNot you.โ
Rian stands. He looks at Erik. โYouโre still injured.โ
โI only need my hand to shoot a crossbow.โ
Rian scowls. โI will notโโ
โHow far away was the ship?โ Olive says. โDo you have other people to move into position?โ
Rian swears. โFine.โ He tosses a length of rope at my feet, then glares at Erik. โMake sure sheโs really bound. If this fails because of you, nothing she says will save you.โ
Then heโs through the door before any of us can respond.
Erik gingerly bends to fetch the rope.
โIโm sorry,โ I whisper. โAre you sure you canโโ
โOf course I can, Miss Tessa. I wouldnโt have left you with him regardless.โ
โNo matter what happens, I wonโt let him harm you.โ
Erikโs eyes meet mine. โIโm not afraid of him.โ He looks up, past me, at Olive. โDo you have a safe place to hide?โ
She nods. โIโm going into the barn.โ
โAnd Ellmo is safe?โ
Her face softens. โYes. Heโs soaking himself in sugar and cocoa in the palace. He hasnโt seen Anya in ages. I think theyโre baking something sweet.โ
โGood.โ He uncoils the rope. โGive me your hands, Miss Tessa.โ
When I hold them out, he looks up at Olive again while he loops the rope around my wrists. โDo you have a weapon?โ he says to her.
โI stashed my crossbow,โ she says.
โLivvy!โ Rian calls from somewhere outside. โYou need to get out of there.โ
Olive doesnโt move.
Erik doesnโt tie my wrists tightly atย all, then reaches for my ankles next. โWhat about a dagger?โ he says to Olive.
โI have a blade hidden under my skirts.โ Her voice is serious, but she gives him a wink. โYou really are a big brother, arenโt you?โ
โIn truth, Iโm the youngest.โ He tugs the knot at my anklesโagain, too looseโand stands.
โLivvy!โ Rian calls again, and Olive scowls.
โGo,โ I say to her, and I hate that my voice is breathy. โBe safe.โ
โYouย be safe,โ she says.
I swallow and nod briskly.
She still doesnโt leave. Instead, she smacks Erik on the arm. โAndย youย keep her safe. I havenโt had a friend inย ages, so youโd better not let anything happen to her. Do you hear me, you bigโโ
He takes hold of her waist and kisses her.
Itโs not a little kiss either. I gasp out loud. I think my cheeks are turning pink.
Hersdefinitely are. A small sound escapes her throat.
Erik lets her go. โTrust me.โ
Sheโs staring up at him. โI do.โ
His eyes flick at the doorway. โGo, before he comes in here to get you, and I have to shoot him in the face.โ
Her flush deepens, but she nods quickly, and then, without another word, sheโs gone.
Erik turns back to me. โDonโt you say a word.โ
โCan I say I appreciate the distraction?โ
That makes him smile. He drops to one knee again, and I donโt miss the slight sound of pain on his exhale.
โYouโre still hurting,โ I say.
โEh. Not like before.โ He shrugs it off and draws his dagger. โIโm going to slip this under your thigh,โ he says, and his voice is very low, like heโs worried heโll be overheard. โIf someone getsย close to you, if anyoneย touchesย you, I want you to use it. Point down, just like I showed you.โ
I think about the times Iโve practiced in the barn, which just now feels completely inadequate. โI wonโt be able to seeโโ
โI donโt care. Anyone on our side wonโt be sneaking up on you. Move your leg. Iโm sure Rian is going to look in soon, and I donโt want him to see.โ
I inhale sharply and obey. He slips the dagger under my thigh, the hilt pressing against the skin behind my knee. I can feel the danger of it, like a promise. His brown eyes look into mine.
โItโs all right to fight for what you believe in,โ he says.
I frown. โAm I fighting for whatย Iย believe in, or am I fighting for what Rian believes in?โ
Erik goes still for a moment, considering that. โIโve heard enough about Oren Crane to know he shouldnโt be ruling a country.โ
โShould Rian?โ I say, thinking of the steps Rian has taken to get to this point. But my words are lost, because another shout comes from outside.
โDouse that lantern! The ship is drawing closer.โ
Erik disappears from my side. The room goes dark.
Then heโs back in a heartbeat, and the cloth of the hood brushes against my hair. I remember another night in the dark just like this, when my hands were bound, and I was left in the dark to wait for my fate.
โIโll be out of sight, Miss Tessa. But Iโll be here.โ Erik ties the hood, and then heโs gone.
I shiver at his sudden absence. I have to close my eyes and pretend the darkness is intentional. The dagger under my leg presses into my thigh. Iโm remembering a carriage ride. Blue eyes daringย mine. Corrick offering me his dagger, when I was terrified of everything Iโd learned. Offering meย escape.
Oh, Corrick. My love.
I miss him so much that my heart aches. I can hear his voice, smell his scent, feel his touch. Iโd give anything for him to be here now.
But I stop the sob before it can form. Heโs not here. I am. And maybe Rian has made mistakes, but so did Harristan. So did Corrick. So have I. Weโre all just doing our best with the information we have.
So I shift my weight against that dagger, and I tug my wrists to see how loose the rope is.
When Oren Crane comes, Iโm ready.
