Now thatย everyoneย believes Iโm Prince Corrickโwhether in truth or playing a roleโkeeping track of my identity gets a lot easier. Lochlan and I have spent a day learning the streets of Silvesse, but at midnight, Iโm able to walk right up to the door of the Harbor Station at nightfall and request an audience with Mr. Cheeke.
While weโre waiting to be admitted, Lochlan leans close. โLina and Mouse are in the alley.โ
I sigh. โMaking sure we do as weโre told, Iโm sure.โ
Once weโre inside, Ford Cheeke spares no time. He drops a piece of parchment on the table in front of me.
โOur king has responded,โ he says.
I pick up the paper.
Prince Corrick of Kandala is dead. Oren Crane is attempting to trick you to gain access to me.
My heart stalls in my chest. Maybe I really am an idiot, because this is not an outcome I envisioned.
Lochlan is staring at me rather desperately, and I realize he doesnโt want to admit he canโt read it.
โSo Rian thinks Iโm dead,โ I say to Ford, giving Lochlan the information he needs. โYour king isย wrong. I proved my identity to you.โ
He spreads his hands. โWe might be at an impasse. Short of delivering you to him directly, Iโm unsure how to convince him otherwise.โ
Iโm unsure, too. I stand there thinking, desperate for a new way.
I canโt walk out of here a failure. I have no doubt Lina and Mouse are waiting to drown us in the harbor if Ford doesnโt give us good news.
โWhat about Tessa?โ Lochlan says quietly, and I look at him.
โTessa?โ
โWhat were you writing to her earlier? Could you convinceย her?โ
I look back at Ford. โI need paper and a pen. Iโm going to give you a message to send back.โ
He gives me the supplies, and I spend less than a minute writing. I fold the paper in half and hand it to him. โSend him that. Then heโll believe itโs me.โ
He unfolds it and reads it, and his body gives a sharp jolt. His eyes flash to mine, and his cheeks flush. โI absolutely will not send this.โ
โDo you want me to kill you instead? Lina and Mouse are waiting in the alley.โ
He huffs a breath. โFine.ย But you will have to return at nightfall,ย three days hence. I donโt have a ship leaving for Fairde again until daybreak tomorrow.โ
Three days.My jaw twitches. Weโre so close that I can feel it.
But thereโs nothing I can do about the delay.
โFine.โ I look at Lochlan. โWeโre done here.โ
Once weโre outside again, he all but pokes me in the arm. โWhat on earth did you write that made him so angry?โ he demands.
โI said, โItโs me, you arrogant prick.โ โ
โNice opening.โ
โThank you. Then I said, โTell Tessa Iโm alive. Tell her I said, โMind your mettle.โ Ask her if itโs really me. Youโll have your answer.โ โ
Lochlan glances at me. โYou think that will work?โ
As usual, I have a glimmer of hope thatโs matched by a wash of fear, because Rian could crumple this up and not tell Tessa anything at all. But Iโm banking on his altruistic desire to help his people. At the end of the day, he stillย needsย Kandala.
And I donโt need to feed more worries to Lochlan.
So I give him a nod. โI know it will.โ
