When my mother came in from work earlier and Darren and I explained what had happened at school, she collapsed in a heap on the floor, crying and wailing. After a few minutes of watching my brother trying to console her, I just stepped around them both and went up to my room.
I couldnโt handle her anymore, I realized. The patience I used to be able to call on was depleting at a rapid rate, and every time she cried, I just wanted to scream. I knew that was bad and it made me a terrible person, but I couldnโt help it. I could barely tolerate being in the same room as my mother anymore.
Patricia arrived to the house a little after six oโ clock, and by then Darren had managed to get Mam to pull herself together. Sheโd asked all her questions, filled in all her notes, clicked her tongue, snapped her heels, and left shortly after.
Numb, I had returned to my room, clutching my phone and praying for mercy for my brother. Aoife had texted me at least thirty times throughout the evening, asking for updates, and every time I replied with a โnothing yetโ a little piece of me died. When ten oโ clock came and went, the anxiety I had been feeling all evening skyrocketed to the point where I couldnโt move a muscle.
Mr. Kavanagh said ten oโ clock.
It was almost eleven now, and I was still sitting on my bed, watching the clock tick by, waiting for him to come home.
The sound of a key turning in the lock filled my ears and I sprang off my bed. Pulling out my phone, I typed out a quick text to Aoife.
S:ย Heโs back.
A:ย Oh thank godโฆ Iโm on my way.
Tossing my phone down on my bed, I moved at top speed through the landing and down the staircase. The moment my eyes landed on Joey closing the front door behind him, a huge swell of relief washed over me. Riddled with emotion, I stumbled down the last three steps and threw my arms around him. โYouโre back!โ I pressed my cheek to his back and exhaled a ragged breath. โThank god.โ
โItโs okay, Shan,โ he mumbled, words slightly slurred. Patting the hand that I had wrapped around him, he kept his head down as he slipped around me and moved for the kitchen. โItโs all good.โ
โWait โโ Catching ahold of his hand, I pulled him back. โLook at me.โ
He didnโt.
Fear trickled down my spine.
โJoey.โ I pulled harder on his hand. โLook at me.โ
Reluctantly, he did as I asked and my heart sank.
โJoe.โ Tightening my hold on his hand, I stared up at his bloodshot eyes in despair. โWhy?โ
โJust get off my back, Shan,โ Joey grumbled, yanking his hand away to run through his hair. โIโm fine.โ Shaking his head, he turned and stalked into the kitchen, ignoring Mam and Darren who were sitting at the table.
โJoey!โ Mam sucked in a sharp breath. โOh, thank god.โ
โMother,โ he drawled sarcastically. โYouโre keeping well?โ
Darren jumped to his feet and closed the space between them, dragging our brother into a fierce hug. Joey remained rigid the entire time, hands balled into fists at his sides, not hugging him back. Pulling back, Darren frowned. โWhatโs wrong with you? Why are you shaking?โ Cupping his cheek with one hand, Darren inspected his eyes before releasing a growl. โFor fuckโs sake, Joey!โ Furious, he roughly shoved him away and paced the floor. โWhat the hell is the matter with you?โ
โWhatโs wrong?โ Mam croaked out.
โWhatโsย wrong?โ Darren spun around to glare at her. โWhatโs wrong is your son is back on drugs!โ
Mamโs eyes widened. โW-what?โ
Shaking his head, Joey moved to the fridge, pulling out his usual can of coke and the packet of cooked ham for his sandwich, dutifully ignoring Darren and Mam as he went.
โIs this true?โ Mam demanded, springing to her feet. โJoey?โ
โIโm not back on drugs,โ Joey grumbled.
โYeah, because you were neverย offย them to begin with, were you?โ Darren demanded.
Joey rolled his eyes. โYouโre all overreacting.โ
โYouโre high,โ Darren spat. โAgain.โ
โAnd youโre an asshole,โ Joey countered. โAgain.โ
โWhat are youย doing, Joey?โ Mam hissed, stalking towards him. Grabbing the can of coke out of his hand, she slammed it down on the counter and shook her head. โWhy would you put that stuff in your body again?โ
โYouโre one to talk,โ he shot back, laughing humorlessly. โDrowning yourself in Prozac and Valium.โ
โPrescribedย to me by a doctor,โ Mam choked out. โNot the thugs from the terrace.โ
โOkay, Mam.โ He rolled his eyes again. โWhatever you say.โ
โIs it Shane Holland?โ Mam growled. โIs he sniffing around again?โ
โJesus Christ, what do you care?โ Joey hissed. โEveryone get off my fucking back.โ
โNo, I wonโt get off your back,โ Darren barked. โYouโre back on drugs, youโve been expelled from school, youโre off the Hurling team โโ His words broke off and he threw his hands up. โYou are ruining your life!โ
โI donโt have a life!โ Joey roared, dropping the packet of ham he was trying to open. โIโve never had a life.โ
โWell, life or not, if you keep this up, youโre going to turn into him,โ Darren snarled. โYouโre going to end up becoming the one thing you hate most in the world.โ
โDarren, shut up!โ Swallowing the lump in my throat, I rushed over to him. โJoey, shh, itโs okay.โ I was watching his downward spiral and felt more helpless than I had when our father roamed the house. โDonโt listen to him, okay? Itโs not true. Youโre going to be okay โโ
โStop fucking saying that, Shannon!โ he strangled out, red-faced. โNothingโs okay.ย Nothing!โ Running his hands through his hair in frustration, he choked out another humorless laugh. โYou know, I sat in that cell for hours, thinkingย howย did this happen to me โโ his voice broke and he dragged in a trembling breath before continuing. โHow did I end up the way I am โ all fucked up in the head. But then I called you,โ he added, lip wobbling, as he locked eyes on Mam. โI called you to come help me and youย didnโtย pick up.โ A lone tear trickled down his cheek. โAnd then I knew. I said to myself,ย thatโs why.ย Thatโs how I turned out like this.โ Sniffling, he locked eyes on Mam. โBecause youย brokeย me!โ
Mam choked out a sob. โThatโs not true.โ Shaking her head, she hissed, โTake it back.โ
โYou fucked my head up worse than heย everย did,โ Joey roared into her face. โHe hurt me, but youย wreckedย me. He used his fists, but you?โ Joey tapped his finger against his temple. โYou got in myย head. Youย brokeย my mind. I donโt work right anymore and itโs because your voice is stuck in my head. The sound of you crying and begging me to help you is all I can hear. Every time I close my eyes, youโre there. In my head. Crying for me. Begging me. Screamingย โSave me, Joey. Save meโ. But I couldnโt ever save you, Mam. I couldnโt save you because you didnโtย wantย me to! Youย wantedย him to be here! Youย wantedย all of this to happen โโ
Mamโs hand shot out so fast that Joey didnโt have a chance to react before her palm smacked against his cheek loudly. โDonโt you dare blame me!โ she strangled out. โI did everything I could for you and your brothers and sister.โ
โYou did everything you could forย him,โ Joey hissed. โYou canโt lie to me, remember? I see right through you โโ
Mam slapped him again, harder this time, so hard in fact, that Joeyโs face turned sideways from the contact.
โMam!โ Darren choked out. โWhat are youย doing? Donโt slap him.โ
I froze, barely breathing, waiting in fearful anticipation.
Walk away, Joe,ย I willed him in my mind.ย Just walk away.
โAndย Iโmย the one turning into him?โ Joey asked in a deathly quiet tone of voice. โIโm not living like this anymore.โ Shaking his head, he stormed out of the kitchen, taking the staircase three steps at a time. โIโm done!โ
โJoey, stopโฆwait โย wait!โ Scrambling after him, I chased after him only to pause in the doorway of his bedroom when I saw him throwing clothes into a gear bag. โWhat are you doing?โ
โI canโt stay here,โ was all he replied, his voice barely more than a broken whisper as he pulled out drawers and grabbed random items of clothing from them. Tears were dripping down his cheeks as he filled the bag. โIโm sorry.โ Clenching his eyes shut, he shuddered and continued to pack. โIโm going to explode if I stay in this house.โ
โYou mean for the night?โ I croaked out, shaking. โYouโll go to Aoifeโs and come back tomorrow, right?โ
He didnโt answer me.
โJoey, please โโ
โIโmย sorry,โ he strangled out, tossing a few pairs of socks on top of the bag before zipping it closed. โIโve tried, but Iย canโtย do this!โ
โJoey, please!โ Desperate to stop him, I grabbed his sleeve and pulled him to a stop. โWhat about me?โ
โWhat aboutย me?โ he roared back in my face, green eyes filled with tears. A huge sob tore through him and his voice cracked. โWhat aboutย me, Shannon?โ Tossing his bag over his shoulder, he sniffled and wiped his eyes roughly with the back of his hand, before shoving past me. โWhat aboutย me?โ
โI love you!โ I cried hoarsely. โI do.ย I love you so much, Joe.โ Tears clouded my vision and I roughly batted them away. โIย careย about you. Youโre important toย me. We can figure this out,โ I sobbed, knotting my hand in his hoodie and dragging him back to me. โWe can get through this together. You donโt need to do โโ
โListen.โ Inhaling a steady breath, he clenched his eyes shut and I watched as tears fell from his lashes. โI need you to take care ofย yourself, okay? I need you to do that for me.โ Clutching the back of my head, he stepped forward and pressed a kiss to my forehead. โDonโt depend on her, or Darren, or anyone else, because in the end, the world will let you down.ย Theyย will all let you down.โ
โAnd you?โ I choked out, tears flowing freely down my cheeks now. โDoes that include you?โ
โEspecially me,โ he strangled out before brushing past me and moving for the stairs.
โWhereโs he going?โ Tadhgโs voice filled my ears and I swung around to see him and Ollie standing in their bedroom doorway. โIs he leaving us?โ
โForever?โ Ollie whispered, eyes shining with tears. โBut he canโt go.โ
Wiping my eyes, I ran for the staircase, desperate to stop my brother from leaving. โJoey, donโt go!โ
โJoey, think about this,โ Darren was saying when I reached the bottom step. He had his back to the front door, blocking Joeyโs path. โDonโt rush out. Just sleep on it, and we can talk about it in the morning when you have a clear head.โ
โI canโt do this, Darren,โ Joey choked out. โGet out of the way.โ
โJoey, no โ talk to me.โ
โGet out of my way, Darren,โ Joey repeated, shaking all over. โNow.โ
Devastated, I looked around aimlessly and spotted Mam in the kitchen. She was sitting on her chair with a cigarette in hand. โDo something,โ I begged from the hallway. โMam, say something.ย Please. Stop him!โ
She looked straight through me like I wasnโt even there.
โJoey, donโt go,โ Ollie begged, running down the stairs. โPlease.โ
โYou swore,โ Tadhg cried harshly. โYou fucking promised you wouldnโt leave us!โ
โO-ee,โ Sean wailed as he shimmied down the steps on his bottom. โO-ee!โ
A huge shudder rolled through Joey and he dropped his head. โIโm so sorry.โ
โStay, Joey,โ Darren whispered. โI canโt do this without you.โ
Tipping his head back up, he looked at Darren. โYouโre going to have to.โ Brushing him out of the way, he pulled the door open. โDonโt let them down.โ
The minute the door slammed shut behind Joey, our little brothers began to scream and wail so loudly that I couldnโt hear what Darren was saying as he tried to console and coax them back upstairs.
Stricken down with panic, I ran for the door, refusing to let this happen โ refusing to watch him leave. Yanking the door open, I ran outside only to stumble over my own legs when my eyes landed on Aoife. Her car was parked across the drive of our house and she was in her pajamas, leaning against the driverโs door of her car, blocking Joeyโs way.
โYou were going to leave without telling me?โ she demanded hoarsely as her long blonde hair blew around her face. โIโm not even worth a fucking goodbye?โ
Joey looked broken as he stood in front of her, his gear bag shouldered on his back, and his head down.
โLook at me!โ she screamed. โGoddammit, Joey Lynch, you better look at me!โ
โAoife, please,โ he whispered, shaking his head. โJust let meย go.โ
โI canโt,โ she cried, sniffling. โIย wonโt!โ
โI haveย nothingย to give you!โ he roared brokenly. โIโm not good for you. Why canโt you get that into your head?โ
โI donโt care about stuff, Joey,โ she strangled out as she wrapped her arms around his waist and clung to him. โI only want you.โ
โIโm done, Aoife.โ Shaking his head, he held his hands up. โIโm done dragging you down with me.โ
โPleaseโฆโ
โI canโt.โ Sniffling, he moved her hands away from his body. โIโm so sorry,โ he whispered, stepping around her.
โDonโt go,โ she screamed after him. โPlease.ย Please donโt go. Joey!ย Joey!ย I love you!โ
โI know,โ he choked out, not looking back, as he walked away. โAnd itโs notย goodย for you to love me.โ
โJoey, I need you โโ
โNo, you donโt. You need to let me go, Aoife,โ he roared. โThatโs what you need to do.โ
โWhat about the โโ
โJust go home and donโt come back here. Do yourself a favor and forget about me!โ
I watched in horror as Aoifeโs legs gave out beneath her. Collapsing on the ground with a thud, she shoved her hands in her hair and screamed. โCome back!โ
Numb to the bone, I hurried over to kneel beside her. โIโm sorry.โ Wrapping my arms around her shoulders, I hugged her tightly. โIโm so sorry.โ
She turned her face into my neck and cried hard and ugly, shaking so badly that I was afraid she was going to have a seizure. โMake him come back,โ she begged, wrapping her arms around her stomach. โPlease! I need him.โ
Me tooโฆย โShh.โ Pushing her hair back off her face, I held her tightly, whispering, โItโs okay,โ over and over in her ear.
But I was a liar.
Because as my brother disappeared from sight, I knew nothing would ever beย okayย again.
โIโm going to go look for him,โ Darren said quietly, and I hadnโt even realized he had come outside. With his car keys in hand, he rounded the garden wall and walked over to his Volvo. โYou should go inside, Shan.โ He pulled open the driverโs door before adding, โAnd you should go home, Aoife.โ
โPlease find him, Darren,โ I choked out.
โI will,โ he replied, before climbing into his car and closing the door.
Sniffling, Aoife slowly pulled herself to her feet. I watched as she dusted down the back of her fluffy, yellow pajama bottoms in rigid, robotic movements. โIโm going to go now,โ she said in a hollow tone of voice. โGoodbye, Shannon.โ
โBye, Aoife.โ
Without another word, she climbed into her old, battered Opal Corsa and drove away.
I waited for Darren to pull away from the house in his Volvo before I dropped my head in hands, right there on the ground, and let myself cry. I cried hard and ugly, unable to contain myself a second longer.
I cried for my broken home, for my fucked-up family, for my little brothers, but mostly I cried for Joey, for self-destructing and detonating the one good thing he had in his life.
A little while later, I heard a car engine in the distance, coming closer, bright lights lighting up the dark street. When it parked up outside the house, I couldnโt stop the spark of hope from springing to life inside of me.
Sniffling, I wiped my cheeks with my hands and stood up. โJoey?โ I called out, straining to see who was behind the tinted windows. โIs that you?โ
The driverโs door opened and he stepped out, all blond hair and smiles.
Except it wasnโt Joeyโs blond hair, and it wasnโt his smile.
Noโฆ
โHello, Shannon.โ
The air escaped my lungs in a pained whoosh and I sagged, feeling my heart stop dead in my chest before restarting with a violent thud. โN-no.โ Shaking my head, I staggered backwards only to lose my footing and land on the ground in a heap. โYouโre n-not supposed to b-be here.โ
Dad stepped into the garden and walked towards me. โI live here, remember?โ
Fear exploded in my chest, paralyzing my limbs and locking me into place.
โCome on.โ Stopping in front of me, he glanced down at me, eyes bloodshot, body swaying, and smiled. โGive me your hand,โ he said, holding his out to me. โYou should be in bed.โ The smell of whiskey hit my senses like a tidal wave, bringing with it a tsunami of pain and memories. โIโll help you to bed.โ
Heโs back to finish you off.
You should have kept your mouth shut.
Get away now, Shannon!
Jumping into action, I pulled myself onto my hands and knees and half-crawled, half-stumbled towards the front door, with my heart pounding so hard it hurt. โHelp!โ I screamed, slamming my hand down on the door handle and falling into the front hall on my hands and knees. โMam!โ I shouted, gasping for air as my skin crawled with the familiar feeling of dread. โMammy!โ
โWhat?โ Mam came barreling out of the kitchen, only to halt in her tracks when she saw who was standing in the doorway behind me. โOh my god.โ She pressed a hand to her chest and staggered backwards.
โHello, Marie.โ
โMam.โ Shaking violently, I scrambled across the floor on my hands and knees and clung to her leg. โMam!โ
โTeddy,โ Mam croaked out, shaking as much as I was. โYouโre not allowed to be here.โ
He held his hands up. โI only want to talk to you.โ He took another step inside the house, swaying on his feet a little as he moved. โIโm not going to hurt you anymore, darling.โ
Heโs lying.
I shook my head. โMam, no, donโt listen!โ
โYou need to go,โ Mam gasped, backing up and taking me with her. โYou need to leave now.โ
โMarie,โ he said in that coaxing voice of his, slurring his words. โWeโre a family.โ He closed the door behind him and turned the lock. โWe need to be together.โ
โNo.โ Mam shook her head. โNo, no, you need to go now.โ
โAre the children in bed?โ he asked, ignoring her pleas, as he slipped the house key into his pocket. โThatโs good.โ He took another step towards us. โItโs best they stay asleep.โ
โTeddyโฆโ Mamโs voice cracked. โPlease donโt โโ
โItโs okay, Marie,โ Dad coaxed. โWeโll all be together again.โ
This is bad, Shannon.
This is really bad.
You need to get out.
Go.
Runโฆ
Letting go of my motherโs leg, I lunged for the staircase with every inch of my body locked tight in fearful anticipation.
โGood girl, Shannon, Iโm not going to hurt you,โ Dad slurred. โGo on up to bed now and close your eyes. Everything will be better in the morning.โ
Choosing to escape rather than stick around and wait for him to change his mind, I stumbled up the staircase as fast as my legs could carry me.
โWhatโs going on?โ Tadhg demanded, peeking out from his bedroom. โShan โโ
โLock your doors,โ I choked out. โHeโs back.โ
Tadhgโs eyes widened in fear. โWh-what?โ
โLock your fucking door, Tadhg!โ I screamed. โThis isnโt a joke.โ
He ran back into his room and bolted the door.
Breathing hard, I ran into my own bedroom and slammed the door shut. Flicking the lock, I looked around wildly as panic clawed at my gut. With my survival instincts kicking in, I lunged for my dresser and pushed with all my might until it was blocking the door. Still frantic, I dragged my bedside locker over, too.
His voice was there.
I could hear it.
I could hearย her.
They werenโt screaming or shouting.
They wereย talking.
Why were theyย talking?
Flailing around, I tried to catch my breath, but it wasnโt coming easy to me. Diving for my bed, I slipped under the covers and roughly pulled the duvet over my head. Something clattered on the floor then and I stiffened.
My phone.
Trembling, I shoved the duvet off and swiped it off the floor. I didnโt even think about what I was doing as I dialed. It was like I was moving on instinct. Pressing call, I put the phone to my ear and held my breath.
โGibs,โ Johnnyโs sleepy voice came down the line, bringing with it a tsunami of relief. โIf this isnโt an emergency, Iโm going to wring your bleeding neck.โ
โH-hi, Johnny.โ
โShannon?โ His voice was softer now. โAre you okay?โ
I shook my head and jerked to my feet, unable to sit still. โNo.โ
โWhatโs wrong?โ Concern filled his voice. โWhatโs happening?โ
I couldnโt speak.
I couldnโt say it out loud.
โTalk to me, Shan,โ he coaxed. โHmm?โ
โHeโs here,โ I choked out. โHeโs downstairs and Iโm scared.โ
โWhat do you mean?โ
โMy dad,โ I strangled out. โHeโs in the house, Johnny.โ
โCan you get out?โ he demanded.
โNo.โ I shook my head and bit back a sob. โHeโs in the kitchen. I canโt go back down there.โ
โIโm on my way,โ he replied without hesitation. โIโm leaving right now.โ
โIโm sorry,โ I whispered, sinking back down on my bed.
โDonโt say sorry,โ he told me. โAre you safe? Are you in your room?โ
โYeah.โ I nodded. โMy doorโs locked.โ
โIโm in my car now, Shan,โ he said. โIโll be as fast as I can.โ
โTheyโre not shouting,โ I strangled out. โWhy arenโt they shouting?โ
โI donโt know, baby,โ he growled. โBut Iโm coming.โ
โSomethingโs wrong,โ I bit out. โHeโsย differentย tonight. I donโt know whatโs happening, Johnny, but somethingโs very wrong. I can feel it in my bones.โ
โIโm going to get you out of there,โ he vowed. โI promise. Iโm going to take you out of that fucking hole and youโre never going back.โ
โJohnny, Iโm really scared.โ
โI know,โ he coaxed. โI know, baby, but Iโm coming.โ He sighed heavily. โShannon, I love you.โ
โI love you, too, Johnny,โ I whispered, ending the call. I knew it was selfish to call him in the middle of the night and drag him from his bed, but I honestly couldnโt take another second of this. I felt like I was close to the edge of something that I wasnโt sure I could come back from.
I was afraid of dying in this house.
I held my breath, not daring to breathe too loudly, listening to the deathly calm sound of my fatherโs voice.
Why wasnโt he shouting?
Why wasnโtย sheย shouting?
Oh god, I couldnโt do this anymore.
I couldnโt be in this house.
I needed anย out.
I counted down the thirty-three minutes I knew it took to get from his house to mine, and when he didnโt arrive at the projected time, the panic inside of me flourished into a monster sized knot of fear, gripping at my lungs, and making it hard to breathe.
Restless, I ran my hands through my hair at least a dozen times before giving up and fixing it into a braid down my right shoulder.
Footsteps on the staircase filled my ears and I flinched.
Hurry up.
Please hurry up.
Slipping on my runners, I leaned against my bedroom window with bated breath and stared out onto the street.
The more time that passed, and the louder the noise downstairs grew, the more of a paranoid wreck I became.
By the time the familiar headlights pulled onto the street, my breathing was audibly uneven.
A knock sounded on the other side of door and my body instinctively seized with dread. โAre you in bed, Shannon?โ my fatherโs voice called out from the other side of the door.
My eyes were wild and panicked as I glanced from my door to the window. โYes,โ I managed to strangle out, though it was hard to breathe from the panic consuming me.
โGood girl,โ he called back and the sound of something spilling on the floor outside my door filled my ears. โGo to sleep now, Shannon.โ The stench of alcohol wafted under my bedroom door and terror clawed at my chest. โYour brothers are all sleeping, too,โ he added. โJust close your eyes and itโll all be better in the morning.โ
โOkay,โ I croaked out, trembling from head to toe, as I pushed open my bedroom window and climbed onto the ledge. โG-goodnight Dad.โ
