Reeling, I sat outside the office on the wooden bench with Johnny, Hughie, and Gibsie. On the bench opposite us sat Bella and Cormac.
โOh my god!โ I couldnโt stop the tears that were dripping down my cheeks as I watched the Gardaรญ take my brother away in handcuffs from the school. โPlease donโt take him!โ
โItโs okay, Shan,โ Joey called over his shoulder as they led him down the corridor. โIโll be grand โ donโt cry.โ
It wasnโtย okay.
Nothingย about any of this wasย okay.
My brother was being arrested and it was all my fault. โIโm sorry, Joe,โ I strangled out just before he was carted out the main door by the two male Gardaรญ. โIโm so sorry.โ
โItโs okay,โ Johnny continued to whisper over and over as he kept his arm around me. โItโs going to be fine, Shan.โ
โIโm such a fuckup,โ I choked out, crying hard and ugly. โHeโs going to be in so much trouble.โ
โYouโve got that straight,โ Cormac sneered. โIโll be pressing charges on your scumbag brother.โ
โBack off,โ Johnny snarled, tensing beside me. โOr you wonโt be around to press charges.โ
โPlease donโt,โ I begged, sniffling. Rolling up the sleeves of Johnnyโs school jumper that I was now wearing, I wiped my cheeks and tried to get a handle of my emotions. It was close to impossible, though. I was so worried about Joey, I could hardly breathe. โMy brotherโs going through a lot,โ I tried to plead. โPlease donโt get him in trouble.โ
โI donโt give a shit what heโs going through,โ Cormac snapped. โHe broke myย nose, Shannon.โ
โShut the hell up, Ryan,โ Hughie sighed wearily. โDonโt make a bad situation worse.โ
โHe attacked me!โ Cormac shot back defensively.
โAnd she attackedย me,โ Bella sobbed.
โBecause you attacked her,โ Johnny snarled, chest heaving, as he pointed to me. โThereโs only one scumbag around this place, Bella, and thatโs you!โ
โScrew you, Johnny Kavanagh,โ she spat. โThis is all your fault.โ
โYou need to keep your mouth good and shut,โ Gibsie hissed. โStupid, fucking girl.โ
โIโm a victim here,โ Bella wailed.
โYouโreย a victim?โ Gibsie shot back, sounding outraged. โJesus Christ, I hope your parents didnโt breed any more of you because you are one septic girl. The world doesnโt need another one of your kind prowling around.โ
โGo away and find some water to drown in, Gibs,โ Cormac shot back, glaring at Gibsie. โLike the rest of your โโ
โBack the fuck off!โ both Johnny and Hughie roared in unison.
Meanwhile, Gibsie remained rigid and silent.
โDonโt evenย thinkย about going there,โ Johnny snarled, wholly enraged. โWhat the hell is wrong with you?โ
โHe called my girlfriend names โโ
โSo that justifies you sayingย that?โ Johnny seethed. โDonโt even think about trying to make excuses, Ryan. Thatโs bleeding despicable.โ
โFrom here on out, weโre done, Cormac,โ Hughie added, shaking with temper. โIf youโre thick enough to knock around with someone like her, then donโt even bother looking in my direction. And I mean that on the pitch as well as off it.โ
โNo skin off my nose, Biggs,โ Cormac sneered. โYouโre so far up Kavโs ass, it doesnโt make a difference to me โโ
โWho is she?โ Bella demanded then, dragging the attention back to her. โThe girl who attacked me โ whatโs her name?โ Narrowing her eyes, she spat, โI know you all know who she is.โ
โWhat girl?โ Gibsie replied calmly. โI didnโt see a girl, did you, lads?โ
โNever saw any girl,โ Johnny agreed. โBut I did see Cormac hit Joey first.โ
Cormacโs eyes widened in disgust. โYouย liar.โ
Johnny shrugged. โThatโs what I saw.โ
โFunny, I saw that, too,โ Gibsie offered. โHe just lunged at you, Johnny โ Lynchy was protecting you.โ
โThatโs what I saw,โ Hughie agreed. โAnd Mr. Twomey was standing behind Johnny. His view was obstructed so he couldnโt see who threw the first punch.โ
โAnd there are no cameras in the carpark,โ Gibsie mused. โI guess that makes it your word against ours.โ
โFive against two,โ Hughie offered. โFunny that.โ
โKarmaโs a beautiful thing,โ Gibsie agreed with a smirk.
โThere was six of you!โ Bella hissed. โThere was aย girl.โ
โNope,โ Gibsie replied with a shrug. โYouโre imagining things.โ
โYouโre a pack of liars,โ Bella hissed, furious.
โYou do realize you caused all of this?โ Hughie shot back. โOr do you just not care?โ
โLeave her alone,โ Cormac quickly came to her defense. โSheโs hurt.โ
โSheโs a parasite, is what she is,โ Gibsie sneered. โAnd youโd do well to get as far away from her as possible because youโre not acting like the lad we grew up with.โ
The sound of whistling grew closer and all six of us turned our heads just as Ronan McGarry, one of the boys from my year, turned the corner of the hallway. When his eyes landed on all of us sitting outside the principalโs office, he did a double take. โWhat are you all doing outโโ
โKeep walking, prick face,โ Johnny warned, bristling beside me. โAnd keep your bleeding mouth shut.โ
Ronan glared at Johnny for the longest moment before flicking his gaze to me. โCausing trouble again, Shannon?โ A ghost of a malicious smirk teased his lips. โWhy am I not surprised?โ
โI said go!โ Johnny snarled, rising to his feet. โBefore I mangle you.โ
Ronan stumbled backwards so quickly that he dropped his schoolbag, causing Gibsie to snicker.
โAh, lad,โ he chuckled. โThanks for that. I needed the laugh.โ
โShag off, Gibs,โ Ronan growled, red-faced, as he grabbed his bag off the floor. โIโm not afraid of him โโ
โGet out of here, you little pervert,โ Johnnyโs voice boomed loudly and was laced with authority, as he took a menacing step towards Ronan. โDonโt think Iโve forgotten about what you did!โ
Ronan backed all the way up the hall heโd just walked down before disappearing around the corner.
โBrilliant.โ Laughing hysterically, Gibsie slapped his own thigh. โI thought he was going to piss himself โโ
The office door opened inwards then, causing them all to fall silent as our parents filed out โ well,ย theirย parents.
First to emerge was Bella and Cormacโs mothers. Mrs. Ryan and Cormac walked away without speaking a single word.
To my absolute shock, Mrs. Wilkinson marched over to her daughter and hissed, โStand up.โ Pouting and huffing loudly, Bella stood up, dabbing her cut lip with a tissue. โNow, give me your phone.โ
โMam โโ
โGive. Me. Your. Phone.โ
Wordlessly, Bella slid her phone out of her pocket and handed it to her mother. Mrs. Wilkinson tapped furiously at the keypad, stiffening when she found what she was looking for. She looked over at me, eyes laced with guilt, and then turned back to her daughter. โGo over there and apologize for what you did to that poor girl.โ
Oh godโฆ
My entire body coiled tight with dread.
I didnโt want her to apologize to me.
I didnโt want her to come anywhere near me ever again.
Bella groaned. โBut Mam โโ
โDonโt push me on this, Isabella!โ her mother seethed. โYouโre lucky Iโm not taking you down to the Garda station and handing you in myself! Iโve never been so disappointed in you as I am today.โ
โHer friend hit me,โ Bella squabbled. โAnd they know who she is โโ
โIโm not surprised,โ Mrs. Wilkinson snapped, red-faced. โAfter what you did to that girl, itโs a miracle her guardian isnโt pressing charges. Now go over there and apologize!โ
โDonโt even think about it,โ Johnny cut in when Bella and her mother moved towards us. โWalk your daughter away from my girlfriend and keep her away,โ he ordered, tightening his arm around me. โShannon doesnโt want her apologies. Your daughter has done enough damage. Sorry means nothing to us.ย So just walk away and leave her alone.โ
Mrs. Wilkinson opened her mouth to say something, but then closed it again. She cast a sympathetic glance my way before dragging Bella away.
โThanks,โ I whispered, melding myself into his side.
โNo problem,โ he replied gruffly.
Next to emerge was Sinead Biggs, followed swiftly by Gibsieโs mother, whose name I learned was Sadhbh.
โOh boys,โ Claireโs mam sighed as she wrapped her arm around Hughieโs waist. โWhat are we going to do with you?โ
โI didnโt hit anyone today,โ Gibsie offered brightly. โI was a good boy.โ
โTodayย being the appropriate word,โ his mother replied with a sigh. Ruffling his blond hair, she added, โCome on, Bubba. Letโs get you home before more trouble finds you.โ
โThatโs the thing, Mam,โ Gibsie replied as he bounded after her. โTrouble findsย me, not the other way around.โ
It wasnโt until we were on our own that Johnny spoke. โWhen did it happen?โ His voice was low and thick with emotion. Shifting sideways to face me, he choked out, โWhat did she do to you, baby?โ
โIt doesnโt matter,โ I mumbled, feeling bone weary. Iโd already explained it all to Mr. Twomey and Darren when it was our turn to speak to him in the office earlier.
โI need to know, Shan,โ Johnny replied. โSo pleaseโฆjustย tellย me.โ
Exhaling a tired sigh, I explained what had happened in the bathroom with Bella and her friends, leaving nothing out. Too exhausted to censor myself, I told Johnny everything, right down to the vomiting.
โWhy didnโt you call me?โ he asked when I was finished. โOr come find me. Shan, I would have โโ
โBecause you had a French test and I didnโt want to get you in trouble,โ I whispered, knees bopping restlessly. โI know The Academy and the scouts are watching your every move right now, and I was afraid youโd get mad and retaliate, so I called Joey because I thought he would come pick me upโโ My voice cracked and a huge sob tore from my throat. โI just wanted a spin home. I didnโt think he wouldย do that.โ
The door of Mr. Twomeyโs office opened again and this time, Mr. Kavanagh stepped out with both Darren and Mr. Twomey in tow.
โAgain, I am terribly sorry for what happened,โ Mr. Twomey said, extending his hand to Darren. โPlease, rest assured that Tommen adheres to a strict zero-tolerance for bullying policy and this matter will be dealt with immediately.โ When Darren didnโt take his hand, Mr. Twomeyโs gaze flicked to me and he grimaced. โShannon, I saw the photographs and I am very sorry.โ
โSo, what are you doing about it?โ Johnny asked in a tight tone of voice. โItโs all well and good saying youโre sorry, but that means nothing if you donโt take action. Is Bella being expelled? What about Kelly? She was involved, too. And Tash? Sheโs just as bad for walking away and not stopping them.โ
โJohnny,โ Mr. Twomey sighed wearily. โStay out of this.โ
โNo!โ Johnny erupted, springing to his feet. โThree of them cornered my girlfriend in the bathroom โ two of them held her down and assaulted her. Theyโre all sixth years. Theyโre over eighteen. Shannonโs a minor. They should all be done for assault.โ
โJohnny,โ I muttered, feeling another wave of shame sweep through me. โJust let it go.โ
โNo, Shan,โ he shot back. โIโm not letting this go.โ Glaring at our principal, he hissed, โI wantย justice.โ
โItโs not good enough,โ Darren shocked me by agreeing with Johnny. โMy sister was brutally assaulted by two girls during school โ one of whom, I learn, has been bullying her for months. My brother has been arrested for defending her when your teaching staff failed to do so. Weโre going through hell as it stands, something you are well aware of, and all you can say is that youโreย sorry?โ Darren shook his head. โForgive me for saying this, Mr. Twomey, but what the hell are we doing paying thousands of euros in school fees if you canโt do something as basic as guarantee my sisterโs safety at school?โ
โBella has been suspended for the next three days,โ Mr. Twomey responded, cheeks flushed. โI will be bringing this incident to the attention of the board of management at our next meeting. Weโll decide on the appropriate action to take then.โ
โTake action byย expellingย her,โ Johnny seethed, furious. โScrew a three-day suspension. That wonโt do any good. She shouldnโt be let back inside this school after what she did to my girlfriend!โ
โMy hands are tied,โ Mr. Twomey replied, looking to Johnnyโs father for help.
โThis is a mess, Seamus,โ Johnnyโs father stated calmly. โI sincerely hope the school has sufficient legal representation โ and for the Wilkinson familyโs sake, I suggest you let them know the same. I will, of course, be offering my services to the Lynch family, and will be in touch when my client decides on the course of actionย sheย wishes to take โ be it against Miss Wilkinson alone, or the school for their negligence and failure to safeguard a minor in their care.โ
Mr. Twomeyโs mouth fell open in surprise and I was pretty sure that his expression was a mirror image of mine and Darrenโs faces as we gaped at Johnnyโs father. โExcuse me?โ
โWell, itโs very clear, Seamus,โ Mr. Kavanagh replied in that sickly-sweet voice only people with great power used. โYou were so quick to call the Gardaรญ and press charges on the Lynch boy for his role in the incident, that I find it only fair, and my personal responsibility, to make my services available to their family. However, given the circumstances surrounding both Lynch children, I feel I should advise you that you will have a challenge on your hands to find a judge the length and breadth of this country unsympathetic enough to their plight to convict Joey Lynch โ and believe me, I know several of those judges.โ Adjusting his tie, Mr. Kavanagh smiled. โHave a good day, sir.โ
Johnny grinned at his father.
Meanwhile, Darren and I both continued to gape in wonder.
โLetโs go,โ Mr. Kavanagh instructed in the cool, calm, and collected tone of his, as he turned to his son. โYour mother needs me to pick up pepper sauce for dinner, and I have to take a trip to the Garda Station before I โโ
โWait, wait, wait,โ Mr. Twomey strangled out. โMr. Kavanagh, can you step back into my office please?โ
Johnnyโs father made a big deal of checking his watch and sighing before reluctantly nodding. โI can give you fifteen minutes.โ
โYes, yes, thank you.โ Mr. Twomey sagged in relief and scurried back into his office.
โShooting fish in a barrel, Da?โ Johnny quipped.
Chuckling softly, Mr. Kavanagh winked at his son before following Mr. Twomey. Pausing in the doorway of the office, he turned to Darren and said, โIโll have your brother home by ten tonight.โ
โThank you so much.โ Exhaling heavily, Darren strode over to Mr. Kavanagh and extended his hand. โAnd Iโm very sorry for the way my family โโ
โIrrelevant,โ Johnnyโs father replied, shaking Darrenโs hand. โWe all need a little mercy sometimes.โ Flicking his sharp gaze to Johnny, he said, โBring that pepper sauce home to your mother before you go to training, son.โ He looked to me then and gave me a soft smile. โI hope one day we will meet under happy circumstances, Shannon.โ With that, Mr. Kavanagh sauntered into the office, letting the door swing shut behind him.
โHeโs going to torture him,โ Johnny chuckled, as he strolled over to where I was sitting and pulled me to my feet. โDonโt worry, Shan,โ he added, wrapping an arm around my waist. โHeโll get this sorted.โ
I blew out a ragged breath. โI canโt believe he did that for us.โ
โNeither can I,โ Darren muttered, rubbing his jaw.
โI told you my parents love you,โ Johnny coaxed, taking my hand in his. โDo you believe me now?โ
Trembling, I squeezed his hand and sagged against his chest. โIโm sorry.โ
โDonโt even say that,โ he whispered, wrapping me up in his arms.
โI smell like fish,โ I warned him. โYouโll get it on your clothes, too.โ
โI donโt care,โ he whispered, dropping a kiss to my hair. โI love fish, I love you, and I still want to eat you for dinner.โ
โNot as much as chicken,โ I sniffled.
โI fuckingย loveย chicken,โ he agreed with a chuckle. โEverythingโs okay, Shan.โ Stepping back, he cupped my face in his hands, and stared down at me. โDo you hear me?โ
I shrugged weakly. โI hear you.โ
โYouโre going to be okay,โ he said gruffly, blue eyes locked on mine. โAnd so is Joey.โ
โI donโt think Iโm going to make dinner tonight, Johnny,โ I squeezed out.
โThatโs okay,โ he replied, dropping his hands to rest on my shoulders. โWeโll do it another time.โ Stroking his thumbs over my collar bone, he added, โIโm going to make this right for you.โ
I sagged against him. โDoesnโt matter.โ
โIt matters,โ he corrected, pulling me back into a hug. โAnd itโs never going to happen to you again.โ
โIโm just so scared for Joey,โ I confessed, burying my face in his chest. โI donโt want him to be in trouble over me.โ
โMy Da will get it cleared up.โ He pressed a kiss to the top of my head. โSeriously, if you knew the half of what heโs managed to drag Gibs out of down through the years, you wouldnโt be worrying. Heโll clear it all up, Shan. Heโll make it go away.โ
โReally?โ I sniffled. โYouโre sure?โ
โHundred percent,โ Johnny replied. โHe meant what he said โ Joeyย willย be home tonight.โ
Relief washed through me but I was afraid to absorb it. I wasย petrifiedย of getting my hopes up only to have more bad news thrown my way.
โI misjudged you,โ Darrenโs voice cut through the air. Stunned, I spun around to find he was looking at Johnny. โI was wrong about you,โ he added, tone hoarse. โAnd I owe you an apology.โ
โYeah, you were wrong,โ Johnny said tightly. โIโm not the person your Ma makes me out to be.โ Sighing heavily, he added, โBut I donโt need an apology.โ
โWell, you have it all the same,โ Darren replied wearily.
โAnd I accept it,โ Johnny stunned me by saying. He didnโt need to accept anything from Darren. Heโd been treated terribly by both my brother and my mother. โNo hard feelings,โ Johnny added, giving my brother a clipped nod. โBut Iโm still not going anywhere.โ
โYeah.โ Darren sighed. โIโm beginning to gather that.โ
Johnny sniffed. โJust so weโre clear.โ
โWeโre clear, Kavanagh,โ Darren replied before turning to me and asking, โAre you coming with me?โ
Am I?
Was he giving me an actual choice?
I frowned. โHuh?โ
โAre you coming home now?โ Darren repeated slowly. โOr later?โ
โI, uhโฆโ Shaking my head, I looked at my brother and said, โNow.โ
โYou sure?โ Johnny asked, stiffening behind me. โI can take you home.โ
โYou have training,โ I whispered. โAnd I need to go home and get cleaned up.โ
โI donโt have to go, Shannon,โ Johnny told me, tone uncertain, eyes flicking between me and Darren. โI can stay with you.โ
I wanted to screamย yes, but I stopped myself. Johnny was on track with his training. He spent most of his days staring longingly at his phone. I knew he was expecting that call from the Irish coaches to come soon, and I couldnโt expect him to railroad his life every time something happened to me. This wasnโt my first disaster and it wouldnโt be my last.
Besides, when he goes, youโre going to have to do this on your own.
Because heย isย leaving, Shannonโฆ
โI need to help my brothers.โ I gave him a watery smile. โIโll call you later.โ
Johnny didnโt look convinced, but he didnโt argue with me. Instead, he pressed a kiss to my forehead, nodded stiffly, and stepped back. I felt the absence of his touch in the deepest part of my soul as I walked away with Darren.
