Shannon Lynch changed me.
I knew that sounded like contrite bullshit, but it was the truth.
That day back in January, when I knocked her out with my ball, Iโd been so fucking lost and miserable. I hadnโt realized just how much until I looked into those midnight-blue eyes and was met with an almost mirror replica of my own secrets and pain. I was hurt and scared for reasons completely different to hers, but something snapped into place for me that day, and I hadnโt been the same since.
She happened to me when I least expected her. I didnโt want it, wasnโt willing to negotiate with the change I knew she would bring. So, I blocked her out. I kept her at armโs length. Until one day, I couldnโt do it anymore.
It took me some time to figure out what was happening to me, to understand the feelings thrashing through me, but once I did, once I accepted what I was feeling and set my sights on her, I was all in.
Five months had passed since the day she burst into my life, throwing everything in a spin, and my feelings for her were deeper than ever. I honest to god felt like I was drowning in everything she was. Her pain, her smiles, her horrible fucking family, her playful personality โ the one that peeked out when we were alone together. I was completely caught up in her.
I was fairly sure that neither of us had a clue of what we were doing โ I certainly didnโt โ but I knew whatever it was, I had no intention of stopping. She wasnโt a test I could study for, or a match I could prepare for with practice and countless hours at the gym. For the first time in my life, I was out of my element, and winging my way through a relationship I wasnโt entirely sure how to navigate, but the feelings she evoked from me were addictive. Fuck addictive, I wasย obsessedย with my girlfriend. I was in so deep with her that I could hardlyย breatheย and still, I jumped in deeper, pushed down further, wanted more and took it, doing whatever I could to justย beย with her.
Between her family despising me and my rigid training schedule that was back in full swing, spending time on our own together was a problem for me. I was struggling to find a balance between rugby and my girlfriend, and most days, I fluctuated between working myself to the bone in the gym or on the pitch, and wanting to blow off training, get in my car, and go pick her up.
Feeling stronger than ever, I worked myself to the bone, falling back into my 5am gym sessions, and working overtime to make up for precious lost time. I was throwing everything into building myself back up in time, hungry to recapture and retain my position. She never complained about how much I trained or how often I went to the gym. She justย encouragedย me, giving me a steady flow of silent support that was more comforting than anything else, while continuously telling me that she believed in me.ย โYou can do it, Johnny, I know you can.โย Her words were powerful to me. They affected me deeper than she realized. Those small affirmations helped me drag my arse out of the bed each morning when my body screamed out in protest.
I tried not to think about what the future held for us โ about what would happen when that call came through, because for the first time in my life, I was invested in something other than rugby. I was invested inย her.
Before I met Shannon, I wouldnโt have considered myself to be an impulsive person, but something had re-wired itself in my brain, morphing me into a reckless, unthinking eejit. I knew I messed up with her father a few weeks back, but in fairness, how the hell could I walk away? How could anyone letย himย walk away? Someone needed to make that monster pay.
The sound of my phone ringing cut through my thoughts and I pulled the car over outside Shannonโs house before taking it out of my pocket to answer it. Glancing at the screen, I smirked when I saw Shannonโs name flash on the screen. โHi, Shannon.โ
โHi, Johnny,โ came her soft reply. โHow was training?โ
โSame as always.โ Sighing contently, I leaned back in my seat. โIโm outside.โ
โOh no,โ she mumbled. โIโm not there.โ
โThatโs okay,โ I replied, pushing down the surge of disappointment churning inside of me.
โIโm actually at Claireโs house,โ she said down the line. โWeโre going shopping.โ
โShopping?โ I smirked to myself and plucked a piece of fluff off my thigh. โYou got anything nice in mind to buy?โ
โUh, no, not me,โ she replied, voice muffled. โBut I can come over later tonight, if thatโs still okay with you? Hughie said heโd drop me to your house if you still want me to come over?โ
โYou better come over,โ I teased. โOtherwise, Iโm going to have to come scale the side of your house and break you out.โ
She laughed softly. โOh, hang on โโ The sound of ruffling and muffled whispers filled my ears before Shannon came back to the phone. โClaire wants to know if Gibsie is with you?โ
โNo, he drove to training today,โ I replied, glancing down at my watch. โHe should be home soon.โ
โDid you get that?โ I heard Shannon say to Claire. โI miss you,โ she added then, directing this part at me. โA lot.โ
โI miss you, too, baby.โ
โYou two are disgusting,โ Claireโs voice snickered down the line. โYou saw each other at school yesterday.โ
Something caught my eye in the front window of Shannonโs house then, distracting me from the conversation. Arching up, I peered over the wall, watching as the curtains twitched again. โWhoโs home, Shan?โ I asked, curious.
โHuh?โ
โAt your house?โ I asked. โYou said Darren was in Belfast this weekend for work?โ
โOh, he is,โ she replied.
โSo thereโs nobody home?โ
โThere shouldnโt be,โ she replied.
โOh.โ I watched as the curtains twitched around and then a little blond head popped out and then quickly disappeared. โHmm.โ
โWhy?โ she hurried to ask, panic evident in her voice. โIs there something wrong?โ
โNope,โ I replied, keeping my voice calm as I climbed out of the car. โIโm just heading home now, so Iโm going to have to hang up.โ
โOkay, thanks for calling.โ
โYou called me, Shan,โ I reminded her as I rounded the garden wall, heading for the house.
โOhโฆyeah, right. Sorry.โ
โDonโt worry about it.โ I chuckled to myself, imagining her blushing. โIโll see you later, okay?โ
โBye, Johnny.โ
โBye, baby.โ Hanging up, I slid my phone into my pocket and crouched down in front of the window. Less than a minute later, the net curtain twitched and a pair of big, chocolate-colored eyes locked on mine.
Sean, I mentally noted as the toddler stared through the glass at me, face solemn and streaked with dirt.
โHey,โ I mouthed, waving at him.
He didnโt respond.
He just stood there, staring back at me.
Unsure of what to do, I placed my hand against the window pane and held my breath. Seconds ticked by, and just when I thought the baby had turned to stone, he pressed his small, chubby hand against the glass, mirroring mine.
Smiling, I slowly stood back up, knowing that I needed to get back in my car and far away from this house, but moving towards the front door anyway. Knocking softly, I waited for a response, forcing down the urge to storm inside and demand to know what the fuck was going on.
Finally, the door opened inwards, and I was faced with the same tiny blond boy from the window. โHey, Sean,โ I said in my best coaxing voice. โHow are you?โ
Another boy, no more than eleven or twelve, rushed towards us then, intercepting the toddler, and sweeping him into his arms. Swinging around, he locked his mistrusting glare on me. โGet out.โ
โHowโs it going?โ I heard myself say as I retreated a couple of steps. โIโm Johnny.โ
โYeah? Well fuck off, Johnny.โ
Jaw-ticking, I swallowed down a snarky response and tried again. โYouโre Tadhg, right?โ I hoped like fuck I had the name right. โIโm your sisterโs boyfriend. And I know your brother Joey, too.โ
A third boy appeared then, peeking around what I knew was their kitchen doorway. โYouโreย thatย Johnny?โ he asked in a small, hopeful voice. โShannon really likes you.โ
โDonโt talk to him, Ollie,โ Tadhg said coldly. He turned his hard stare on me and hissed, โLeave.โ
I wasnโt leaving.
Iย couldnโt.
โWhereโs your mother?โ I asked.
โMind your fucking business,โ Tadhg spat.
Christ, this kid was almost as feral as Joey.
โWhereโs Joey?โ
No answer.
โAre you guys home alone?โ
With a scathing glare, Tadhg moved to swing the door shut on me.
I reached out and stopped it from closing. โYou can tell me where she is,โ I said calmly. โOr you can tell the Gardaรญ.โ
โJoey had to go to a match,โ the middle one spilled his guts and said. โMammy was supposed to drop us to Nannyโs but sheโs still in bed, and she wonโt wake up.โ
โJesus fucking Christ, Ollie,โ Tadhg roared. โWhat are you trying to do to us?โ
โHe asked,โ Ollie replied, lip wobbling.
โAnd you justย tellย him our business?โ Tadhg snapped. โYou know better!โ
The middle one hung his head and sniffled. โIโm sorry.โ
โIf you call the Gards on us, Iโll make you pay,โ Tadhg hissed, turning to glare up at me. โIโm dangerous.โ
I bit down on my lip to stop myself from smiling. โI believe you,โ I told him, keeping my expression somber. โYouโre a big lad for your age.โ
โYeah, Iโm twelve,โ he growled, puffing out his chest. โI could take you.โ
I nodded solemnly. โDefinitely.โ
โHe talks funny,โ Ollie said then. โWhy do you talk funny?โ
โThatโs because heโs aย Dub,โ Tadhg sneered, giving me a scathing look. โEveryone knows Cork is the real capital of Ireland.โ
Was he picking a fight with me over myย birthplace?
Jesusโฆ
โSo, what timeโs Joey due back from his match?โ I asked, trying for nonchalance, as I leaned against the doorframe.
โA few hours,โ Ollie said, forthcoming. โBut if heโs working afterwards, then heโll be really, really late.โ
โDammit, Ollie.โ Tadhg shook his head in resignation. โYou canโt keep anything to yourself.โ
โIโm just answering his question,โ Ollie huffed.
โDid you guys have dinner yet?โ I asked, smiling at Sean who was staring up at me, wide-eyed. โAre ye hungry?โ
โWeโre fine,โ Tadhg growled.
โIโm hungry,โ Ollie piped up. โAnd we didnโt have dinner because we donโt know about the cooker.โ
My heart cracked in my chest, but I masked it with a small laugh. โYeah, same here,โ I told them, trying to put them at ease. โI donโt know much about cookers, either.โ
โJoey cooks,โ Ollie offered. โShannon, too.โ
Smiling, I nodded. โYeah, Shannonโs a great cook.โ
His eyes widened. โHave you tried her spaghetti? Itโs my favorite.โ
โNot yet,โ I replied. โI must ask her to make it for me sometime.โ
โYou should,โ Ollie agreed. โItโs really good.โ
โHey, you know what I really like?โ I said. โMcDonalds.โ Their eyes widened and I hurried to say, โDo you want to go?โ
What the fuck are you doing, Johnny!
โWith you?โ Ollie asked, eyes wide.
Say no, asshole. Say fucking no!
โYeah,โ I replied.
โNow?โ Tadhg piped up, sounding reluctantly excited.
Youโre going to jail, Capโฆ
โYeah,โ I choked out. โWhy not.โ
Three hours, one trip to the playground and two food-runs to McDonalds later, and I was bleeding exhausted. Panic stricken, I pulled onto Gibsieโs street, knowing that I needed some backup and some life advice.
โLads, wait in the car, okay?โ I coaxed, glancing back at the three blond heads in the back of my Audi. Ollie and Sean were stuffing their faces with bags of sweets. Tadhg was slurping down a slushy. Empty Happy Meal boxes were scattered all over the floor of my car and I was praying these kids didnโt have allergies because Iโd loaded them up on more shite than I dared to think about. โIโm just picking up my buddy.โ
โCan I drive now?โ Tadhg asked, unbuckling his seatbelt and moving to climb through the seats. โWeโre on a cul-de-sac.โ
โNo,โ I shot back. โI already told you.โ
Huffing, he sat back down and took a sip from his straw. โYou suck.โ
You cheeky little fucker.ย โJust wait here,โ I muttered, climbing out of the car before I strangled my girlfriendโs baby brother.
โWhat did you do?โ Gibsie asked, watching me from his front door as I hurried up the garden path towards him. โJohnny?โ
โIโm in trouble,โ I strangled out when I reached him. โBig trouble.โ
โI know,โ Gibsie replied, eyeing me with suspicion. โI can tell by your face. What the hell did you do?โ
โI took them!โ I choked out, pointing at my car.
โYou took what, Johnny?โ Gibsie asked warily.
Swallowing down a groan, I grabbed his arm and dragged him down the path towards my car. โThem,โ I strangled out, pointing to the three blond boys looking out at us.
โYouย tookย them,โ Gibsie deadpanned. โYou just went ahead andย tookย some kids?โ
โYou werenโt there!โ Exhaling a furious growl, I ran my hand through my hair and hissed, โYou didnโt see what I saw, so donโt fucking judge me.โ
โDonโtย judgeย you?โ Gibsie spluttered, eyes wide. โLad, you stole some fuckingย kids.โ His voice rose, turning all pitchy, as he continued to rant. โAnd you brought them here โ toย myย house โ making me an accomplice!โ
โI didnโtย stealย them,โ I growled. โI took them.โ
โSteal, take โ itโs all the same, Johnny,โ he snapped. โThey are not a product of your fucked-up dick therefore you have no business taking them anywhere.โ He stepped around me and peered through the window. โWhatโs wrong with that one?โ he asked, pointing at Sean. โWhy is he eating his fingers?โ
โI donโt know, he doesnโt talk,โ I groaned, flustered. โI donโt know what the fuck I should do next.โ
โTake them back to whatever playground you found them in.โ
โItโs a little more complicated than that,โ I bit out, grinning and giving the boys two thumbs up. Ollie and Sean waved back at me. Tadhg gave me the middle finger. โWe can drop that one back,โ I muttered under my breath. โLook,โ I said, turning back to Gibsie. โCan we bring them inside?โ
โInside my house?โ Gibsie balked. โYeah, because that doesnโt sound at all predatory and fucked-up. Two seventeen-year old lads bringing three small boys into their house.โ
โCan we?โ
Gibsie gaped at me like I had lost my mind, and the truth was I probably had. But I was in this now and I was rolling with it. โFuck no!โ
โThen what am I supposed to do with them?โ
โTake them back.โ
I shook my head. โI canโt do that.โ
โYou donโt stealย children,โ he hissed. โItโs like the fundamental rule of life.โ
โI wasnโt thinking.โ
โYou have issues,โ Gibsie accused, sounding horrified. โYou have serious fucking issues with taking things that arenโt yours. Youโre like a kleptomaniac but withย humans!โ
โI know,โ I choked out. โIโm going to work on it, but I need you to help me with these ones.โ
โWhy?โ he demanded. โWhat arenโt you telling me, Johnny? Christ, I canโt help you if you donโt tell me whatโs going on.โ
โTheyโreย Shannonโsย brothers.โ Turning my back on the car, I whispered, โThey were all alone, lad. Their Ma was in bed and they were hungry. I couldnโt leave them there.โ I shrugged helplessly. โHow can I take them back to that house?โ I pointed back to the car. โThat oneโs only a baby.โ
โShit.โ Gibsie dropped his head and groaned. โShould we call Shannon?โ
โNo,โ I snapped, flustered. โSheโs having a good day for once in her life. Iโm not wrecking that with more shite.โ
โThen weโll take them back to your house,โ he replied. โYour Mamโs at home. Sheโll know what to do with them.โ
โSheโs going to kill me,โ I mumbled dejectedly.
โYep,โ Gibs replied, clapping me on the back. โAnd me with you.โ
โWhoa!โ Tadhg and Ollie chorused when we pulled up outside my house a little while later. โYour house isย huge.โ
โNone of you are afraid of dogs, right?โ I asked as Bonnie, Cupcake, and Sookie bounded around in the back garden.
โNope,โ Ollie replied, pushing the door open and running straight for the dogs. โI like the black one,โ Tadhg stated as he hurried out after his brother.
โHer nameโs Sookie, I told him, climbing out after them. โSheโs old so be gentle with her.โ
โHey, Sookie,โ Tadhg called out, running across the grass to where Ollie was rolling around with my motherโs two golden retrievers.
โWhat are we going to do with this one?โ Gibsie asked, as he leaned against the side of my car and pointed to Sean who was still sitting in the backseat, chewing on his fingers. โWhy does he keep eating himself?โ
โHeโs not eating himself, Gibs,โ I snapped, feeling oddly defensive of him. โHeโs just nervous. This is all new to him, so justโฆleave him alone, will ya?โ
โJesus,โ Gibsie muttered, holding his hands up. โSorry,ย Dad.โ
Ignoring my best friend, I walked around to the back door and crouched down. โHey, buddy,โ I coaxed, making eye contact with him. โYou want to come inside with me?โ
Sean stared at me for a long moment before crawling over the seats and slipping his small hand into mine. Uncertain, I looked at his small face and plastered on what I hoped was a reassuring smile. โGood boy.โ Helping him out of the car, I had to hunch while we walked, so I didnโt pull the kidโs arm out of its socket.
โYou know, if the rugby ever fails, youโd make a mighty fine childcare provider,โ Gibsie snickered, holding the back door of the house open for me.
โFuck off,โ I mouthed as I helped Shannonโs youngest brother over the back step, and threw a fewย Hail Marysย up for self-preservation purposes. โMa?โ I called out, blessing myself, as I pushed the kitchen door inwards and found my mother sitting at the island with one of her work portfolios laying open. โI have a problem and I need your help.โ
โTry three problems,โ Gibs mused. โThree huge fucking problems.โ
โBut donโt panic,โ I hurried to add. โLittle ears are listening.โ
Her gaze went straight to the toddler whose hand I was holding and then to Gibsie before back to me. โOh, Johnny, what have you done?โ Pushing back her stool, she stood up and walked over to us. โWho owns this child?โ
โThis is Shannonโs baby brother,โ I explained as calmly as I could, careful not to spook the small child clinging to my hand.
โThereโs two more where he came from in your garden,โ Gibsie offered up. โJohnny stole them.โ
โYou stole herย children?โ Mam strangled out, paling.
โYep, so you might want to call your husband and see if heโs familiar with child abduction cases,โ Gibsie replied for me. โAnd full disclaimer here: for once, this wasย notย my idea.โ
โThis is Sean,โ I said, eyeballing my mother. Keeping my voice soft and gentle, I crouched down beside him and spoke directly to him. โSean, this is my mammy. Her nameโs Edel.โ
Sean stared up at my mother, shoving his entire fist into his mouth this time.
โHe likes to eat his hand,โ Gibsie offered, like that was important information. โBut Johnny reckons itโs okay.โ Shrugging, he added, โDonโt know much about kids, myself. All I have at home is a cat.โ
โGerard, go down to the office and get my husband for me,โ Mam whispered. โHurry now, love.โ
โWill do,โ Gibsie replied, before racing down the hallway towards my fatherโs home office.
โNow.โ Crouching down in front of Sean, Mam smiled brightly. โHello, Sean, love, how are you?โ
Sean watched her carefully, not making a sound.
โDoes he speak?โ Mam asked gently, casting a quick glance to me.
I shook my head. โDonโt think so.โ
โJohnny?โ another small voice called out. โCan I feed your dogs?โ
โYeah, do you have a lead so I can take Sookie for a walk?โ
Seconds later, Ollie and Tadhg came barreling into the kitchen, bright-eyed and rosy-cheeked. The minute they locked eyes on my mother, they stiffened and bunched together.
โLads, this is my Ma,โ I explained. โEdel.โ
โHello, boys,โ Mam said softly, smiling warmly at the brothers.
โMa, these are Shannonโs brothers; Ollie and Tadhg.โ I made the introductions from where I was still crouched next to Sean, who was squeezing my hand tightly in his. โItโs okay, buddy,โ I whispered in his ear. โYouโre safe.โ
โHi, Dellie,โ Ollie said shyly.
โGod, Ollie, he said her name is Edel,โ Tadhg grumbled. โNot Dellie.โ
โThatโs okay,โ Mam chuckled, rising up. โMy god, youโre the spitting image of your brother,โ she added, smiling at Tadhg.
Tadhg watched her carefully. โWhich brother?โ
โJoey,โ Mam replied.
His eyes widened. โYou know Joey?โ
Mam nodded. โI do. Heโs a lovely boy.โ
Tadhg frowned. โAre you sure you knowย Joey?โ
Mam chuckled again. โSo, you like Sookie?โ
The hardness in his eyes softened. โSheโs okay.โ
โHer voice is funny, too,โ Ollie announced. โIsnโt it, Tadhg? Her voice is stranger than Johnnyโs.โ
โSheโs fromย Dublin,โ Tadhg groaned, looking embarrassed. โGod, Ollie.โ
โAnd what about you, Ollie?โ Mam turned her smile on the middle one. โDo you like Bonnie and Cupcake?โ
โI love them,โ he told her, beaming. โTheyโre so big. I want a dog. Like so, so much, but weโre not allowed to have one because of when my Dad got the lastโโ
โOllie,โ Tadhg said in a warning tone. โQuiet.โ
Ollie snapped his mouth shut and blushed.
โWhatโs this about you kidnapping the Lynch children?โ my father chuckled as he strolled into the kitchen, looking amused. However, the moment his eyes landed on the three boys standing next to me, his smile vanished. โOh, dear.โ
The moment he stepped into the room, the atmosphere changed and the boys seemed to go on high-alert. Ollie and Tadhg both took a step towards me, with Tadhg shifting Ollie behind him. Sean turned into my chest and wrapped his little arms around my neck, clinging to me.
Tears filled my motherโs eyes and she covered her mouth with her hand. โOh, lord.โ
โDonโt cry, Ma,โ I mouthed as I carefully wrapped my arms around Seanโs tiny body and lifted him up. โYouโre okay, buddy,โ I coaxed. Nodding he tucked his face in my neck and cupped my cheek with his drool covered fingers.
Men,ย I realized. They were fucking terrified of grown men. Gibsie and I werenโt as much of a threat to them because we were the same age as Joey, who all these children seemed to adore โ Shannon included. Disgust filled my body at a rapid rate, making it hard to function. โLads,โ I said, dragging myself back to the present. โThis is my Da โ John.โ I looked to my mother for help, but she looked just as stumped as I was. โHeโs aโฆโ I scrambled for the words I needed to put these kids at ease. Clearing my throat, I added, โHeโs a big eejit, lads, but heโs completely harmless.โ
Their eyes widened in shock as if they couldnโt believe what I had just said.
โThatโs right,โ Mam said, catching on quickly. Taking my father by the hand, she led him over to the island and shoved him down on a stool so he wasnโt so intimidating standing at his full 6โ2 height. โHeโs our fool, arenโt you, John?โ she added, ruffling his hair. โA big, old softie.โ
โHi, John,โ Ollie said, eyeing my father warily, and offering him a small wave. โIโm Ollie.โ
โHello, Ollie,โ Dad replied, smiling at the middle Lynch boy. โItโs lovely to meet you.โ
โDid you hear that, Tadhg,โ Ollie said, jabbing Tadhg in the ribs. โHe talks the same as us.โ
โBecauseย heโsย fromย Cork,โ Tadhg muttered, shaking his head. โObviously.โ
โHello, Tadhg,โ Dad added. โHow are you doing?โ
โFine,โ Tadhg replied warily. โThanks.โ
Dad smiled. โSo, what did Johnny do, lads?โ
โHe took us to McDonalds,โ Ollie blurted out. โTwo times.โ
โTwice,โ Tadhg corrected with a heavy sigh. โSayย twice, Ollie.โ
โAnd the playground,โ Ollie continued, unperturbed. โAnd we met that weird guy over there โโ He paused to point at Gibsie. โWell, Tadhg says heโs weird. I think so, too, but heโs also kind of nice.โ Grinning, he added, โHe gave me a fiver.โ
โThanks, kid,โ Gibsie chuckled. โI think youโre kind of nice, too.โ
โOh, so you boys arenโt hungry?โ Mam asked as she opened the fridge. โNot even for someโฆ.โ She let her words trail off as she pulled a huge chocolate cake from the fridge. โDessert?โ
โWhoa,โ Ollie gasped, moving straight for her, all fears of my father forgotten now that there was cake involved. โWeโre allowed to have some, Dellie?โ
โEdel,โ Tadhg muttered, pinching the bridge of his nose. โNot Dellie.โ
โOnly the three biggest pieces,โ Mam replied, making her eyes go all wide with fake excitement. โHow does that sound?โ
Ollie nodded eagerly. โIt was Tadhgโs birthday last month and he didnโt get a cake. He loves chocolate, donโt you, Tadhg?โ
โItโs okay,โ Tadhg mumbled, edging closer. โI guess.โ
โWell, come over here with me and weโll cut it up,โ Mam announced, tone cheerful, but eyes watering. โAnd Iโll get some ice-cream to go with it.โ
โOh my god!โ Ollie exclaimed, trailing after my mother. โYour Mam is the best, Johnny.โ
โAnd you,โ Mam said as she set the cake down on the counter and lifted Ollie onto a stool. โRemind me just of your sister.โ Stroking his hair, she smiled down at him. โAnd you are just as sweet.โ
Ollie beamed up at her. โI am?โ
Mam nodded. โYes, you are.โ
Tadhg snickered, joining Ollie at the island. โYou look like Shannon.โ
โSo?โ Ollie huffed, keeping his gaze trained on the cake Mam was cutting. โIโmย sweet.โ
โYou want some cake, Sean?โ I asked when his head popped up, eyes trailing his brothers. โI bet itโs nice.โ
โHe doesnโt talk much,โ Tadhg explained, eyes widening when my mother placed a huge slice of cake in front of him. โHe only says like seven words.โ
โItโs true,โ Ollie agreed, picking up his slice of cake with his hand and taking a huge bite. โAnd he hasnโt said anything since Daddy hurt Shannon โโ
โOllie,โ Tadhg groaned, shoulders slumping. โStop talking.โ
โItโs okay, boys,โ Mam coaxed, voice shaking a little as she set a plate of cake down in front of Dad. โWe donโt have to talk about that today.โ
โHey,โ Gibsie interjected then, winking at Tadhg. โDonโt you be eating all that cake, fatty. I want some.โ
Tadhg snorted. โYou look like youโve had enough cake for a month.โ
โIโll have you know that it takes hours in the gym to look as good as I do,โ Gibsie shot back, joining them at the opposite side of the counter, taking the stool next to my father.
โYeah,โ Tadhg snickered between bites of his cake โ again, using his hands and not the fork beside him, โhours with your head in the fridge.โ
Gibsie threw his head back and laughed. โYouโre a cheeky little fucker.โ
โGerard,โ Mam said, giving Gibsie a grateful smile, as she set a plate of cake in front of him. โNo bad language.โ
โSorry, Mammy K,โ Gibsie replied with a sheepish grin before stabbing into his cake with relish. โMmm.โ
โIโll get the ice-cream,โ Mam announced then, before hurrying into the utility room, smothering a sob as she went.
โWill we get some?โ I asked Sean, who was now physically gravitating towards the food. โYeah?โ
Sean nodded and wiggled in my arms. I took it as a signal to put him down and the minute I did, he scooted towards his brothers, trying and failing to climb up. Both of his brothers ignored him, entirely too focused on their own cake as they scoffed it down. Giving up on getting their attention, he moved around the island, stopping at my fatherโs legs. I watched as he seemed to hesitate before reaching up and tugging on the leg of his pants.
Wordlessly, my father reached down and lifted him onto his lap, not making a big deal of it, as he set his plate of cake in front of Sean. Diving for the cake, Sean started to shove it into his mouth, sitting contently on my fatherโs lap as he ate.
Ollie and Tadhg turned to watch their little brother, both eyeing my father with wary curiosity.
When Mam walked into the kitchen with the tub of ice-cream, she quickly backpedaled out again. Shaking my head, I followed her into the utility to find her sobbing against the freezer. โGod love them,โ she whispered, tears dripping down her cheeks. โOh, Johnny, those poor babies.โ
โI know, Ma,โ I replied, keeping my voice low. โBut donโt be crying. Youโll freak them out.โ
โItโs just terrible,โ she choked out. โHow anyone could doย thatย to those babiesโโ
โMa, stop.โ Closing the space between us, I placed my hands on her shoulders and sighed. โFeed them,โ I encouraged. โFill them up with ice-cream and all that shite you gave us when we were small. They donโt need any more tears.โ
โYouโre right.โ Sniffling, she wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand and forced a smile. โNo more tears.โ
โEdel,โ Dad said, popping his head around the door with Sean balancing on his hip. โWe need to talk.โ
โI know, John.โ
โNo.โ He shook his head and gave my mother a meaningful look as Sean pulled on his tie. โWe need to talk now, sweetheart.โ
โThis is bullshit,โ I snarled, pacing my fatherโs study like a deranged lunatic. โIโm not bringing them back there, Da.โ
โWe donโt have a choice, Johnny,โ Dad replied wearily. โWe have to return them โ preferably before their mother realizes that theyโre gone.โ
โThat family is in dire need of an intervention,โ Mam choked out. โI donโt know whatโs wrong with the world, but I canโt understand how theyโre just left in that home with her โ or how that man is walking around scot-free.โ
โCalm down, sweetheart,โ Dad coaxed, rubbing her arm.
โItโs not fair, John,โ she strangled out. โI canโtย bearย it.โ
โNo, itโs not fair,โ Dad agreed. โBut you canโt be getting yourself worked up over it.โ
โLook at them, John!โ Stalking over to the window, she pointed outside to where Gibsie was rolling around on the lawn with the three boys. โLookย at them.โ
โI see them, Edel,โ Dad replied calmly. โI see everything youโre seeing, sweetheart.โ
โIf you see them then how can you possibly expect me to send themย back?โ Mam hissed. โSomething has to be done.ย Betterย has to be done for those children! Theyโre just kids. They donโt understand, and they donโt deserve this. And Shannon?โ Mamโs expression caved. โHeย saw, John.โ She pointed a shaky finger at me. โOur son recognized it from the very beginning. He might not have understood what he was seeing, but he heard the cry for help. He heardย her.ย And he unraveled a darkness no child should be exposed to.โ
โIย know,โ Dad replied, giving her a meaningful look. โBut right now, we donโt have a legal leg to stand on. Do you want your son to be arrested, sweetheart? Because thatโs exactly what will happen if we donโt do this theย rightย way.โ
โThenย when?โ Mam choked out. โWhen, John?โ
โWhen what, Ma?โ I asked, watching her carefully.
Mam opened her mouth to respond, but my father got there first.
โEdel.โ He shook his head in warning. โThis isnโt a conversation I want us to have in front of our son.โ
โDo what the right way?โ I asked, suspicious. โWhatโs going on here?โ
โDonโt ask questions,โ my father said. โI promise, you donโt need to know.โ
โOf course I need to know, Da โโ
โNo, Johnny, you donโt!โ he snapped. โYou need to trust me andย notย ask questions.โ
โI canโt do it,โ Mam choked out, dropping her head in her hands. โI canโt send them back there.โ
โJohnny, I need you to text their brother,โ Dad instructed. โAsk Joey to come over here.โ
โWhat?โ My brows furrowed. โNow?โ
Dad nodded. โNow.โ
โWhy Joey?โ
โBecause heโs over eighteen and the least likely to have you arrested,โ Dad shot back.
โFuck,โ I muttered.
โYes,โ Dad offered. โFuck indeed, son.โ
โBut Da, I donโt think they should go back there โโ
โDo what I say,โ Dad ordered. โIโve never guided you wrong before, and I donโt have plans on starting, so just trust me and text their brother.โ
Frustrated, I dragged my phone out of my pocket and sighed dejectedly. โWhat do you want me to say?โ
โTell him the truth,โ Dad commanded. โTell him exactly what you told us and ask him to come pick them up.โ
โNo.โ Mam shook her head. โPlease, John โโ
โTrust me,โ Dad bit out. โThis is the only way, Edel.โ
Sniffling, Mam nodded. โText Joey, love.โ
Panicked, I pulled my phone out and sent a text to the one person I hoped wouldnโt have me arrested.
J:ย Yeah, so, strange thing happened todayโฆ
Joey the hurler:ย Why are you texting me?
J:ย Because I took your brothers and theyโre at my house.
Joey the hurler:ย Why?
J:ย I donโt know.
Joey the hurler:ย Do you plan on giving them back?
J:ย I guess.
Joey the hurler:ย Youโre really fucked up, Kavanagh.
J:ย I know.
Joey the hurler:ย Iโm on my way.
โDone,โ I muttered, sliding my phone back into my pocket. โHeโs on the way.โ
โThank you,โ Dad said with a sigh.
โDonโt thank me, Da,โ I muttered. โNot for doing the wrong thing.โ
Mam glanced between me and my father before sighing heavily. โYou did the right thing, Johnny.โ Shoulders sagging, she walked over to where I was standing and wrapped her arms around my waist. โEverything will be okay.โ Pressing a kiss to my shoulder, she added, โIโll put the kettle on,โ before walking out of the kitchen.
โWhatโs going on, Da?โ I demanded, feeling out of the loop. โWhat arenโt you telling me?โ
โI donโt tell you a lot of things,โ my father replied evenly. โParent/child privilege.โ
โYou know what I mean, Da,โ I snapped. โIf you know something to do with Shannon and youโre not telling me, Iโm going to lose it.โ
โNothing about Shannon,โ Dad told me.
โThen whatโs going on with you and Mam? What did all of that mean?โ
My father sighed. โJohnny, you really donโt need to know.โ
โIย wantย to know,โ I countered hotly.
โBut you donโtย needย to know,โ he shot back with an air of finality in his tone. โBecause what your mother and I talk about is private.โ
โAre you fighting?โ I asked, at a complete fucking loss. โOver the Lynchs?โ
โIf we are, then that is also private,โ Dad shot back, not missing a beat. โRespect that.โ
Jaw-ticking, I swallowed down a snarky response and nodded stiffly.
โGood man,โ he said, pulling his car keys out of his pocket. โNow, I need to go and make a few calls and see if I can keep you out of prison โ at least until you turn eighteen.โ He turned and walked for the door only to halt and spin back around. โI forgot to ask you how training went?โ
โFine,โ I grumbled.
โAnd Coach Dennehy?โ he pushed. โAny word yet?โ
Noโฆย โUh, can we talk about it later?โ I said instead. โMy headโs wrecked.โ
โOf course.โ Giving me a wink, he said, โColorful family youโve gotten yourself attached to, son.โ
โLike you can talk,โ I shot back accusingly, thinking about my motherโs side of the fence.
โDonโt remind me,โ Dad muttered. โSee you later.โ
โYeah.โ I frowned after him, wondering what the hell he was up to. โIโll see ya.โ
