We were sitting on the couch in Johnnyโs sitting room after my impromptu driving lesson, with our school books sprawled out, having just finished our homework, and I couldnโt wipe the smile off my face. Iโd had the best evening with him, and now I knew how to drive.ย Me.ย I could actually drive a real car. I had no idea what spurred him to take me out in his car earlier, but I wasnโt regretting it. I felt so free behind the wheel, and having that much power was such a thrilling rush.
Feeling content, I absorbed the heat wafting from the open fire as I listened to Johnny place a food order. โYeah, can I get a portion of cheesy bread with that orange dip and a large pizza with no mushrooms and extra pineapple?โ Johnny looked over at me and made a gagging motion before saying, โYeah, Iโm sure, lad, pile on the pineapple.โ
โHey โโ Stretching out, I poked him with my toe and whispered, โDonโt judge me, misterย I only eat chicken.โ
โThe world is judging you,โ he mouthed back as he snatched my foot and placed it on his thigh. โActually, do you have skinless chicken?โ I stifled a laugh. โYou do?โ Peeling the sock partially off, he trailed his fingertips over my ankle. โHowโs that cooked? Itโs fried?โ His brows furrowed and he tapped his fingers against my ankle, looking genuinely conflicted, before blowing out a breath. โFuck it, give me a dinner box with an extra breast and leave the skin on it โ oh, and throw in a bottle of coke.โ He looked over at me and winked. โYeah, she needs theย real brand.โ He hung up the phone and grinned. โLooks like the dietโs out the window.โ
โYou can always start again on Monday,โ I snickered.
โAre you saying I need to diet?โ he teased, pulling me onto his lap. โHuh?โ His lips moved to my neck and I sighed in contentment.
โYouโre so pretty,โ I whispered, biting down on my lip as I sagged against him. โYou donโt need to diet.โ
He paused mid-kiss and pulled back to stare at me. โDid you just call meย pretty?โ
โYes.โ I smiled. โWhatโs wrong with calling you pretty?โ
โEverything,โ he replied, looking appalled. โShan, you canโt call meย pretty.โ
โBut youย areย pretty,โ I teased. โYou have pretty eyes, and pretty hair, and a pretty smile.โ
Johnny gaped at me. โIโm offended.โ
I laughed at his horrified expression. โYouย areย a pretty boy.โ
โNope โโ Shaking his head, he tossed me onto my back and then dove on top of me, โNo, Iโm not having that.โ Slipping his hands under my shirt, he tickled my ribs. โTake it back!โ
โAhhhh, stop!โ I screamed through fits of laughter as I squirmed beneath him. โI canโt โ Iโm ticklish!โ
โI know,โ he laughed, continuing to torture me. โNow take it back, or Iโm going in for the kill.โ
โI take it back!โ I squealed, twisting and turning. โYouโre not pretty โ ahhhhh, Johnny, I canโt โ youโre sexy! Youโre sexy, okay? Ah, ah, mercy. I scream mercy!โ
โI show no mercy,โ he snickered, slipping his head under the hem of my shirt and upping his efforts. โYour leg kicks out when I tickle you here,โ he chuckled, tickling my rib. โThatโs so weird.โ
โIโm going to get you back for this,โ I warned him, hardly able to breathe from laughing so hard, as I wiggled and bucked beneath him. โYou just wait and see โโ
The sound of tires screeching on the gravel outside cut through the air and Johnnyโs head popped back out from under my t-shirt. โJaysus,โ he mused, hair sticking up in forty different directions. โThat has to be some kind of record on delivering.โ
โIt canโt be the pizza.โ I arched myself up to look out the window, but because it was dark outside, I could only make out a set of headlamps. โOh my god, what if itโs your Mam?โ I spluttered and then proceeded to scramble off his lap at top speed. Knowing my luck, thatโs exactly who it was. โI should go.โ Grabbing my schoolbag, I started throwing all of my books back in, while I multitasked by toeing on my runners in the process. โYou should take me home.โ
โShan, relax,โ he chuckled, climbing to his feet. โItโs not my Ma, and if it is, you donโt need to go.โ
Bang, bang, bangโฆ
โSee?โ Johnny coaxed, moving for the door. โMy mother wouldnโt knock.โ My shoulders sagged in relief and I loosened my grip on my schoolbag. โJust wait here,โ he added before slipping out of the room.
A few seconds later, a familiar voice boomed through the house. โWhereโs my sister?โ
Darren?
โSheโs here.โ
โTell her to come outside. She needs to come home with me now.โ
Oh godโฆ
โCome in.โ
โWhat?โ
โIโm not telling her what to do, so come in if you want to talk to her.โ
Less than a minute later, Johnny strolled back into the sitting room with Darren trailing stiffly behind him. โYour brotherโs here, Shan,โ he said, keeping his eyes trained on mine as he walked over and stood beside me.
โWhatโs wrong?โ I asked, instantly on edge. โWh-why are you here?โ
โI should ask you the same thing,โ Darren replied, but he didnโt sound angry.ย Just tired.ย โYou were supposed to come straight home after school.โ His gaze drifted to the school books laying open on the coffee table and surprise flickered in his eyes before he shook his head, features somber once again. โItโs almost eight oโ clock, Shannon.โ
โI was coming home,โ I told him. โWe were just going to eat dinner first.โ
โWe need to talk,โ he replied. โItโs important.โ
Panic flared inside of me. โWhatโs wrong?โ I asked, because something had to be wrong for him to obtain Johnnyโs address and drive all the way out here. He wasnโt even fighting with me. This was bad. Something terrible was going to come out of his mouth. I couldย feelย it. โDarren?โ My voice was shaky, matching the rest of me. โWhatโs going on?โ
My brotherโs gaze flicked from me to Johnny and then back to me before he blew out a harsh breath. โItโs Dad.โ
I stiffened, feeling every muscle in my body lock tight with tension, while I waited for Darren to confirm what I knew in my heart was coming.
โHe was released from Brickley House today, Shannon,โ Darren announced, voice thick with emotion. โHeโs back in Ballylaggin.โ
The air left my lungs in strangled rush, and in its place came a flood of hurt, pain, fear, and paranoia. It would never end. This would never be over. Joey was right. He was always right. Dad would be back, and when he did, he was going to make me payโฆ
A large hand slipped into mine then; warm, strong, and short-wiring my panicked thoughts. Trembling, I glanced down at our joined hands and then up at Johnny. He was standing right beside me โ big and strong, and so close that I could feel the heat radiating off his body. His presence in this moment was deeply comforting. โWhat does this mean?โ he asked the question I couldnโt get out of my throat. โFor your family?โ He roughly cleared his throat. โFor Shannon?โ
โNo offense, Johnny, but itโs a private matter,โ Darren replied, giving him a sharp look.
โNo offense,ย Darren, but I donโt give a shite,โ Johnny shot back, not missing a beat. โWhether you like it or not, Iโm her fella, and if sheโs in danger then I want to know about it.โ Bristling, he added, โI can help.โ
โI donโt need your help,โ Darren replied in a weary tone. โBut I do need you to come home,โ he added, turning his attention to me. โMamโs a nervous wreck and we all need to talk about where we go from here as a family.โ
โIs Joey at home?โ I asked, watching him carefully.
Darren sighed heavily. โI donโt know where he is.โ
โWhat do you mean you donโt know?โ I strangled out. โWhere is he, Darren?โ
โTadhg didnโt take the news about Dad too well and stormed out,โ he muttered, pinching the bridge of his nose. โJoeyโs out trying to find him.โ Running a hand through his dark hair, he expelled another pained breath before gesturing to the books on the coffee table. โCan you pack up whatโs yours so we can go? Iโve left Sean, Ollie, and Mam at home.โ
โI donโt think she should go home,โ Johnny was quick to say.
Darren gave him a sharp look. โExcuse me?โ
โI said that I donโt think she should go home,โ Johnny repeated calmly. โShe can stay here with me. Your Da doesnโt know where my house is.โ
โSheโs coming home,โ Darren replied tightly. โNow.โ
โI donโt see why she has to โโ Johnny began to argue, but Darren cut him off.
โYou need to back off,โ my brother warned. โSeriously.โ
โItโs okay,โ I reluctantly said, wanting to do anything else in the world than go back to Elkโs Terrace, but knowing I had no choice. โIโll go.โ Shoulders slumped, I released Johnnyโs hand and grabbed the last of my stuff off the table. Tears filled my eyes, making it impossible to see the opening of my pencil case as I tried to shove all of my pens and ruler inside. โJust give me a minute.โ
โIโll wait for you in the car.โ
I nodded stiffly, keeping my back to him as I packed up my stuff. โOkay.โ
The sitting room door clicked shut and then Johnny was beside me. โTalk to me.โ
I shook my head and tossed the pencil case down on the coffee table. Shaking, I pushed my hands through my hair, taking deep, slow breaths, desperately trying to keep my emotions under control. โIโฆโ Snapping my mouth shut, I stepped around him and walked to the window. โIโฆโ I shook my head again, dragging in a sharp breath.
โShannon, come on,โ he urged, following me. โGive me your words.โ
โI think โโ Pausing, I dropped my head and clutched the sill, โIโm going to cry.โ
โThatโs okay,โ Johnny told me, standing so close behind me that I could feel his thigh against mine. โItโs okay to cry.โ
โI donโt want to do that in front of you again.โ Exhaling a ragged breath, I clenched my eyes shut and strangled out, โI donโt want you to see me fall apart all the time.โ
โWell, you donโt have a choice,โ he replied, turning me around and pulling me into his arms. โBecause Iโm not leaving you.โ
Shaking my head, I kept my eyes closed and whispered, โJohnny, I canโt โโ
โIโm not going anywhere,โ he said, tightening his hold on me.
I tried again. โYou canโt โโ
โIโm not goingย anywhere, Shannon.โ
โYou donโt need to โโ
โIโm withย you. All of you. Every part. Good and bad. Iโm staying. So, donโt hide this part from me.โ
I remained rigid for the longest moment. It didnโt faze him because he didnโt let go. He just held me there, refusing to let me go, refusing to leave me alone.
And when I caved? When I finally crumbled? It was into him. I broke down. I absolutely lost it right there in Johnnyโs sitting room.
I didnโt want to have a conversation.
I just wanted toย cry.
Johnny seemed to sense it because he didnโt ask me any questions. He didnโt say a word. Instead, he kept his arms wrapped around my body, holding me close, as my life fell down around me.
