โWhy did you do that?โ I demanded, furious, as I glared at Mam and Darren. โHe was just dropping me home.โ
โLook at the cut of you,โ Mam choked out. โGoing out dressed like that.โ
โThereโs nothing wrong with what Iโm wearing,โ I shot back defiantly.
Mamโs face reddened. โYou look like a โโ
โWhore?โ I offered. โThanks,ย Dad.โ
Mam flinched and dropped her head in her hands.
I rolled my eyes, too furious to deal with her waterworks right now. โYou were both horrible,โ I hissed, focusing on Darren. โYou just shut the door in his face!โ
โCan you blame me?โ Darren growled. โYou heard how he spoke to Mam.โ
โHe was telling the truth,โ I spat, blinking back the traitorous tears that were pooling in my eyes. โAnd you know it!โ
โAnd you wonder why this family has a bad reputation,โ Joey mused around bites of a ham sandwich. โShanโs right.โ He took a swig from his can of coke. โThat was rude as fuck.โ
โOur family has a bad reputation becauseย youย canโt keep yourself out of trouble, so donโt you start giving me shit,โ Darren shot back angrily. โI know you were suspended from school again yesterday for fighting. Your principalย calledย me, Joey. What was it this time? Some lad said something you didnโt like so you go ahead and puck the head off him?โ
Joey shrugged, unaffected. โSomething like that.โ
โIf you donโt steady up and learn to control that temper, youโre going to end up getting yourself locked up,โ Darren warned. โMark my words.โ
โI thought this was about Kavanagh?โ Joey replied, scratching his jaw. โHow did this suddenly get turned on me?โ
โItโs not about Johnny,โ I hissed, keeping my furious gaze locked on Darren. โItโs about how youโre trying to controlย myย life.โ
โHeโs still outside, you know,โ Joey added.
My heart leapt in my chest. โHe is?โ
โStay where you are, Shannon,โ Darren warned before stalking into the hallway and swinging the door open. Muttering a string of curses under his breath, he slammed the door shut and returned with a thunderous expression. โHeโs still there.โ
โLike I said,โ Joey replied, taking another bite of his sandwich. โGo on out to him, Shan,โ he added mid-chew. โDonโt mind the two of them.โ
โDonโt even think about it, Shannon,โ Mam screeched. โI donโt want you going anywhere near that boy.โ
โJesus Christ,โ Joey growled, tossing his half-eaten sandwich down on the counter. โYouโre making a big fucking deal out of nothing. Just let her go outside and talk to him, let him do all his checkups to see sheโs not being hurt or whatever the fuck he does that calms his nerves, and then sheโll come back inside. No harm done.โ
โNo harm done?โ Mam choked out. โPlentyย harm could be done, Joey.โ
โGive her a bit of credit,โ my brother hissed in a disgusted tone. โSheโs not you.โ
Mam wailed and Joey rolled his eyes.
โIntelligence doesnโt play a role in this,โ Darren bit out. โHormonesย play the only role in this.โ
โWell then, I happen to possess the perfect antidote toย hormones.โ Joey slipped his hand into his pocket and withdrew his wallet. Flipping it open, he retrieved a condom and waved it around. โI knowย youโveย never seen one of these,โ he added, sneering at our mother. โAnd I doubt theyโre even holding fucking hands, but just in case โ here, Shan, hold the tip when you roll it on.โ He tossed me the condom and winked. โNow.โ Picking his sandwich back up, Joey took a big bite and chewed. โCrisis averted. Everyone breathe.โ
โWhat the fuck is wrong with you, Joey?โ Darren growled, snatching the condom out of my hands and shoving it into his pocket. โSheโs sixteen years old.โ
โIโm aware,โ Joey agreed, taking another swig from his coke.
โHeโs too old for her,โ Mam wailed.
โNo, heโs not,โ Joey scoffed. โHeโs seventeen, not seventy. Relax, woman.โ
โYes, he damn well is too old,โ Mam countered shakily.
โWell, thatโs your opinion,โ Joey shot back.
โItโs the truth,โ Mam strangled out. โAnd you shouldnโt be encouraging her.โ
โListen,โ Joey snapped, wiping his buttery fingers on his overalls. โI know youโre bothย newย at this, but hereโs a helpful parenting tip: you either swallow your pride and let her be with him, or this whole thing blows up in your face. I think itโs pretty clear by now that heโs not going anywhere, so you might as well get on board with it.โ Shrugging, he added, โShannon has a boyfriend. Big deal. Sheโs not a baby anymore, and itโs about time you two stop treating her like one.โ
โThatโs ridiculous.โ
โNo, whatโs ridiculous is you going along with that womanโs fucked up thought process and trying to keep Shan in this house after everything that happened,โ Joey countered. โIf you keep it up โ if you force them apart โ heย willย lose his shit. Draw a battle line with that fucker and he will go to war with you.โ Turning to Mam, he added, โAnd if I was you, Iโd lay off throwing threats around because you have a hell of a lot more to lose out of this โ and a lot more skeletons to be exposed โ if his daddy decides to haveย youย done for slander.โ
Mam had her head in her hands and Darren had his back to me, but Joey was facing me and when he noticed me edging closer to the kitchen door, he smirked and winked.
โWhat are you โโ Darrenโs voice trailed off and he spun around, catching me red-handed. โDonโt even think about it,โ he warned.
Tearing through the hallway, I yanked the front door open.
โShannon, Iโm not messing around here โโ
I didnโt stop to listen to him. Instead, I hurried out the front door, breaking into an excited run when my eyes landed on Johnny leaning against the side of his car, scowling at my house like it personally offended him. His eyes found mine and relief flooded his features. โAre you okay?โ
Nodding, I barreled bare-foot through the garden and rounded the footpath at top speed, not stopping until I was flush against him. โYou didnโt go home,โ I said, panting, as I looked up at him. โYou didnโt leave.โ
โI couldnโt,โ Johnny replied thickly. His hands dropped to my hips, pulling me closer. โI needed to know you were safe.โ
My heart burst open in my chest, and I felt like I was drowning in feelings. โIโm safe.โ
โYou sure?โ He looked so vulnerable when he said, โBecause I think Iโm going to need a promise.โ
Oh godโฆ
Reaching up, I snaked a hand in his hair and pulled his face down to mine. โWould you settle for a kiss goodnight?โ
โOnly if you promise youโll still be here in the morning,โ he replied, brushing his lips against mine. โSo, do you promise?โ
I blew out a ragged breath. โIโll be here.โ
โIf you need me, you call me,โ he whispered, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear and then cupping my cheek. โDoesnโt matter what time it is. Just pick up that phone, and Iโll come, okay?โ
Unable to stop myself, I leaned my cheek into his touch. โOkay.โ
โIโll call you tomorrow,โ he added gruffly, trailing his thumb over my cheek. โAnd Iโll pick you up for school on Monday.โ
โNo, no, no. You donโt have to do that for me,โ I hurried to say. โI can get a โโ
โI want to pick you up,โ he interrupted. โIf you want me to?โ
I nodded weakly. โI want you.โย To. Add the to, Shannon.ย โTo,โ I croaked out. โI mean, I want you to pick me up.โ
โI want you, too,โ he said with a smirk. โIn every way.โ
My body grew hot and achy. โI, uhโฆI โโ
Johnny didnโt wait for me to respond before pressing his lips to mine, firmer this time. Deeper.
Holding onto his arms, I kissed him back with everything I had, desperately trying to show him how much he meant to me.
โIf thatโs what you call hand-holding then Iโd really like to know what you call the other shit,โ I heard Darren say from somewhere nearby.
โMaybe theyโre gone beyond hand-holding,โ I heard Joey muse. โI canโt always be right.โ
