โYou could have really screwed me with the condoms, lad, and Iโve forgiven you, so get off your high horse and let it go,โ I reminded Gibsie when he pulled into the carpark at Tommen. Heโd spent the entire drive from my house to school bitching about his uniform and I had spent the entire drive reminding him of the many,ย manyย times down through the years that heโd been a pain in my ass. โYouโre lucky Shannon didnโt freak out on me because this conversation would be taking place in a different location,โ I added as I shoved the car door open and climbed out. โLike a hospital. Or over your grave.โ
โWell, Iโll never forgive you for this morning,โ he huffed, rounding the car and falling into step beside me. โYouย cameย on me, Johnny.โ
โIโll come on you a lot fucking worse if you donโt give it a bleeding rest,โ I snapped.
Huffing loudly, he grabbed the front of his jumper and dragged it to his nose. โWhat does your mother wash the clothes with?โ he asked, inhaling deeply. โSmells like heaven.โ
โNo idea, lad. The woman puts a ton of different crap into the machine for a load.โ Shrugging, I added, โThink itโs the blue bottle that makes the clothes smell like that.โ
โHmm,โ he mused, expression thoughtful. โDo you think if I brought a โโ
โNo, Gibs,โ I cut him off with a weary sigh as we rounded the courtyard. โSheโs not washing your clothes for you, so donโt go there.โ
โFair enough, I was only asking โ oh shit!โ Fisting the back of my jumper, Gibsie yanked me to an abrupt stop and then dragged me back to where he was standing, poker straight and glowering.
โWhat the hell, lad?โ I barked, flinching when pain shot up my legs from the unexpected twist in direction.
โLook,โ he spat, inclining his head towards the front building. โThat little shit.โ
Confused, I followed his train of vision until my eyes landed on Claire. She was standing outside the glass doors of the main building, talking to who I vaguely recognized as the lad Gibsie had roughed up at the school disco last year. Squinting my eyes, I asked, โIs that โโ
โJamie Kelleher?โ he offered flatly. โYeah.โ
โAnd we hate him again becauseโฆโ
โBecause heโs a prick,โ Gibsie hissed, glowering. โHe wants her.โ
โHeโs the ex-boyfriend?โ I asked, narrowing my eyes to get a better look at him. โThe two-week relationship?โ
โTwo weeks too many,โ Gibsie bit out, vibrating with tension. โI hate him โ he tried to get her to touch his fucking cock, lad. At the disco.โ Growling, he hissed, โWhat the fuck is she playing at talking to him again?โ
โNo clue,โ I replied. โSheโs probably just being friendly.โ
โWell, she shouldnโt,โ he snapped.
โGibs, come on, lad, you need to simmer down.โ
โFuck off,โ he shot back. โEasy for you to say.โ
Jamie obviously said something funny then because Claire threw her head back and laughed. He stepped closer, smiling down at her, and she placed a hand on his arm.
โThatโs fucking it!โ Gibsie hissed. โIโm going to kill him โโ
โNo, youโre not,โ I instructed, returning the favor of fisting his jumper and dragging him back to me. โYouโre not going to do anything because you donโt have the right.โ
โI donโt have theย right?โ Gibsie spluttered, livid. โWhat are youย talkingย about?โ
โExactly what I said โ you donโt have the right,โ I confirmed, keeping ahold of his jumper. โYouโre not with her, lad, so back down now before you do something stupid thatโll evoke girl-tears and drama.โ
โHeโll be the one crying when I get ahold of him,โ he hissed, jaw ticking. โHeโs a creep, Johnny. Heโs notย goodย enough forย her.โ
โMaybe,โ I agreed calmly. โBut youโll be the eejit in Twomeyโs office if you go over there all guns blazing.โ
โThen Iโm going home,โ he sneered, roughly shaking my hand off. โFuck this.โ
โGibs!โ I called after him. โCome on, donโt be thick.โ
โIโm not watching that,โ he roared over his shoulder as he stalked off towards the carpark. โIโm not fucking watching it again.โ
Give me strengthโฆ
โYou know, all you have to do is ask the girl out,โ I said as I hobble/jogged after him. โSheโll say yes.โ
โI know,โ he snarled, sounding even more furious.
โWell if you know, then why havenโt you done it already?โ I asked, frustrated.
โBecause!โ
โBecause?โ I pushed, resisting the urge to jump on his back and wrestle him to the ground. โYou like her, she likes you.โ I threw my hands up. โWhatโs the problem?โ
When we reached his car, Gibsie spun around to face me, chest rising and falling quickly, car keys clenched in his white-knuckled fist. โDo you know what the statistics for relationships formed during childhood lasting are?โ
Exhaling breathlessly, I shook my head. โWhat?โ
โTheyโre low, Johnny,โ he hissed. โVery fucking low. The odds of being with your childhood sweetheart twenty years from now are less than fifteen percent.โ
I gaped at him. โAgain,ย what?โ
โIโm not prepared to be another statistic,โ he choked out, sounding deadly serious. โNot with her. So, Iโll do what I have to do, Iโll bide my time, but I wonโt tie her down. Not until sheโs ready. Not until weโve both lived a bit of life first.โ He dropped his head and released a pained groan. โBut I wonโt watchย that.โ He growled again. โNever a-fucking-gain.โ
โWell, shit.โ I frowned. โI donโt know whether that sounds sensible or insane?โ
โItโs probably both,โ he confirmed grimly.
Probablyโฆ
Eyeing him curiously, I said, โYou actually believe that?โ When he didnโt respond, I continued, โThatโs whatโs wrong with you? Why youโve been driving yourself crazy over that girl for as long as Iโve known you? Youโre afraid it wonโt last?โ I tilted my head to one-side. โYouโre scared?โ
โIโm not scared,โ he bit out. โI just know better.โ
โBecause of your parents?โ I asked warily, half expecting a slap in the jaw for the question. From what I gathered, his parentsโ divorce was a shitstorm of epic proportions that erupted right around the time of his Holy Communion. Gibs had spoken about it to me a grand total of one time in almost seven years of friendship. It was the unspoken law of the land in our circle to never talk about his parentsโ divorce โ and neverย everย bring up his father and Bethany โ but I was going there again today because he was clearly messed in the head over it. โBecause thatโs what happened to them? You think thatโll happen to you and Claire?โ
โFuck you,โ Gibsie huffed. โIโm not projecting. Iโm protecting.โ
Oh, he was definitely doing both.
โHey, Iโm not judging you, lad,โ I replied, holding my hands up. โBut I am going to tell you that I think your thought process is all kinds of messed up.โ
His jaw ticked, but he didnโt respond.
โFuck statistics,โ I urged. โIf you want to be with her, then justย beย with her.โ
โSays the fella who ran away from a tiny, little girl for months,โ he shot back tersely. โAnd you have the gall to call me scared โ pussy.โ
I let his comment fly over my head, concentrating on the issue at hand, because I had no defense. Iย didย run away from a tiny, little girl for months โ I ran like I was fearing for my bleeding life โ but I wasnโt running anymore. โSo, youโre telling me that youโll be fine with her going out with some gobshite like Jamie again?โ I pushed him by asking. โYouโll be perfectly okay with that?โ I shrugged. โBecause thatโs what it sounds like.โ
โYou know I wonโt,โ he strangled out. โIt nearly killed me last time.โ
I cringed in sympathy. โAt least you got to box the head off him when it all went to shite.โ
โYeah.โ A small smile tipped at his lips. โThat was satisfying.โ
โI bet,โ I agreed, taking the opportunity to snatch his keys out of his hand so he couldnโt bolt, and then shoving them into my pocket. โNow, are you going to let that little, skinny fucker get the better of you?โ
โFuck no,โ he growled, running a hand through his blond hair.
โDamn straight, youโre not,โ I replied enthusiastically. โSo, pull your finger out of your hole and go over there.โ
โYou know what, Kav?โ Needing no other encouragement, Gibs rolled up his sleeves. โThatโs exactly what Iโm going to do.โ
ย โNot to fight,โ I reminded him, stepping in front of him when he tried to charge past me. โToย charm.โ
He frowned, looking stumped. โCharm?โ
โCharm,โ I confirmed, nodding. โBelieve it or not, you have it in buckets, lad. Go back over there and charm her away from him.โ
โCharm,โ he repeated slowly, mulling over the word. His silver eyes flicked to mine and he nodded. โI can do that.โ
โYouโve got this,โ I replied, squeezing his shoulders. โNow go fuck that little weasel over.โ
Leaning against the bonnet of the car, I watched Gibsie stalk away, muttering the words, โCharm not harm,โ over and over to himself as he went.
Shaking my head, I hoisted my bag back onto my shoulder before setting off towards the school to find Shannon. I left my crutch in the backseat of Gibsieโs car because I couldnโt stand another day of walking around with the bleeding thing. Besides, I didnโt need it anymore. I was hardly limping now, and with any luck, Coach Mulcahy would spot me all mobile and willing and cut me a deal, because I sure as hell needed someone to take pity on me.
My step faltered when I spotted Shannon leaning against the railing at the bottom of the P.E hall. She was wrapped up in her winter coat, with a wooly hat perched on her head and a scarf wrapped around her neck, as rain drizzled down on her. To be honest, I almost didnโt recognize her through the layers of clothing. She noticed me, though, and raised a hand, smiling softly.
Instantly, I veered off course, striding towards her, with my heart slamming in my chest.
Somethingโs wrong,ย my brain hissed when I drew closer and saw the dark circles under her eyes.ย Something bad.
Keep the head.
Donโt bulldoze!
โHi, Shannon,โ I said when I was close enough for her to hear me. Frowning, I added, โWere you waiting out here for me?โ
โHi, Johnny,โ she replied in a small voice. โYeah, Iโฆ uh, was hoping to see you before class.โ She chewed on her lip, watching me warily before saying, โCan we talk for a sec?โ
โYeah,โ Stopping just short of her, I gave her my full attention. โOf course.โ
She smiled up at me and then her entire expression caved. Without another word, she let her schoolbag fall off her shoulders and walked straight into my arms.
โWhatโs wrong?โ My heart slammed violently against my ribcage as I wrapped my arms around her and held her to my chest. She was so small, so fucking tiny, that all I wanted to do was pick her up and take her home with me, where I could keep her safe, where no one could make her cry again. โWhat happened?โย What did they do to you?
โThey, uh, they found my Dad,โ she said, voice muffled, as she buried her face in my chest. โI found out last night.โ
โThey did?โ Thank you, Jesus. I tightened my arms around her. โWhere was he?โ
โBrickley House,โ she mumbled.
I frowned. โThe rehab place?โ
โYeah.โ Nodding, she sniffled and glanced up at me, eyes wide and full of tears. โBut, uh, heโs not going to prison, Johnny.โ
What the actual fuck.
Breathe, Kav, breathe.
Donโt lose the head.
โHow do you know?โ I managed to get out, squeezing her so tight I was fairly certain I was hurting her. I couldnโt seem to loosen my hold, though, and she wasnโt complaining as she held onto me just as tightly. โAre you sure?โ
โIโm sure,โ she whispered. โHe only has to complete a thirty-day treatment plan in Brickley House and then heโs allowed out again, and his c-court date isnโt until November. So, heโll be โโ Clenching her eyes shut, she leaned her cheek against my chest and exhaled a broken sob. โGod, Joey was right.โ
โJoey?โ
She nodded stiffly, her whole body rigid. โHe said this would happen. Joey told us that he wouldnโt go to prison, but Darren seemed so convinced that I just โโ she exhaled a gut-wrecking sob. โI let myself get my hopes up for a little while, thinking that maybe it reallyย wasย over.โ Sniffling, she added, โBut itโs not over, and Joey left again last night โ didnโt come home until five in the morning. Itโs not over and itโs all going bad again.โ
โWhereโd Joey go?โ
โNowhere good,โ she choked out.
Shite.
โWhy didnโt you call me?โ I croaked out, voice thick and gruff. โI would have come over.โ
โI did try,โ she whispered, โbut your phone was off.โ
โI left it charging overnight,โ I admitted, feeling like the worse piece of shit on the planet. โForgot to turn it on until this morning.โ
โItโs okay.โ
No, it isnโt.ย โIt wonโt happen again,โ I told her. โNext time you call me, Iโll answer.โ
โIโm so scared, Johnny,โ she squeezed out.
โDonโt be scared,โ I hurried to say โ to fucking console. โI wonโt let anything happen to you.โ My voice was shaking, matching my entire body, as emotions racked through me. โI swear, I wonโt let him hurt you ever again.โ
She didnโt acknowledge what Iโd said.
Because she didnโt believe me.
My heart cracked clean open in my chest.
โI donโt want to feel this way anymore,โ she told me, wiping her cheek with the back of her hand. โI donโt want this version of life โ I donโt want to be this version ofย me.โ
โI love this version of you,โ I told her, unsure of what else there was to say. I couldnโt tell her not to feel the way she did. All I could do was reassure her. โI love all your versions.โ
โIโm just so tired,โ she whispered, ignoring my words, drowning us both in her pain. โIโm tired of being scared. Iโm tired of not knowing. Iโm tired of being fucked up in the head!โ
โJesus, Shan,โ I groaned, dropping my chin to rest on her head. โYou areย notย fucked up in the head.โ I tightened my arms around her. โDo you hear me? This is not you. This is them. Theyโre the fucked-up ones.โ
โI hate it,โ she choked out.
โYeah.โ I exhaled shakily. โMe, too.โ
The way she held me, clung to me like I was her lifeline, well, that evoked emotions inside of me I wasnโt sure I was old enough to feel. And I didnโt mean sex. It was deeper. A chord of connection channeling deep inside of me and connecting to her. I hoped she never left me, because I was never going to get over this girl.
โTell me what to do?โ I begged, holding her tight and growing more frantic with every desperate shiver and sob that tore from her body. โTell me what you need and Iโll give it to you.โ I pressed a kiss to her hair, wanting nothing more than to take this away for her. โJustย tellย me what you need from me.โ
โI just want to go,โ she sniffled. โI want to leave and never come back.โ
โYou wonโt do that, though.โ Panicking, I tipped her chin up, forcing her to look at me. โYou wonโt leave me, right?โ
โIโm not g-good for you,โ she hiccupped. โYouโre going to r-realize that.โ
โBullshit.โ Cupping her face in my hands, I leaned closer, pressing my forehead to hers. โThatโs bullshit, Shannon,โ I repeated, tone gruff, keeping my eyes locked on hers. โI donโt want you to say that again, okay?โ
Sniffling, she nodded and tightened her hold on my waist. โOkay.โ
A fierce surge of protectiveness roared to life inside of me, and every instinct I had demanded I do just that; protect her. Do something.ย Do anythingโฆ
I cast a quick glance around us, debating my next move before throwing in the towel. โCome on,โ I said, taking her hand in mine. โLetโs go.โ Remembering I still had Gibsieโs keys in my pocket, I led her towards the silver Focus. Shannon walked wordlessly beside me, not asking questions.ย She was just following me.ย It was such a raw display of her blatant vulnerability and it terrified me. I could have been taking her anywhere, but when I unlocked the car, she just climbed into the passenger seat without a word or question.
Silently reeling, I closed her door and rounded the car before taking my perch in the driverโs seat. Buckling up, I adjusted the seat back as far as it would go, and placed my feet on the pedals. Gingerly, I pushed down on the pedals, testing out the pressure in my legs.
Not bad.
Twisting the key in the ignition, I revved the engine, flicked on the wipers, and slowly backed out of the parking spot Gibsie had hastily rolled into this morning.
โAre we going to get arrested?โ Shannon asked, breaking the silence, as we traveled down the long, wooded laneway. โFor taking his car?โ
โNo, Shan, we wonโt get arrested,โ I chuckled, pulling to a stop at the main entrance. Flicking on my indicator, I leaned over the wheel and checked the road. โIโll shoot him a text later and let him know.โ
โOh.โ Nodding, she clasped her hands together on her lap. โOkay.โ
Pulling onto the main road, I dropped my hand to the gearstick and shifted into third and then fourth before finally settling on fifth as the speedometer rose right along with my sense of freedom.
Feeling like I was in control for the first time in weeks, I put my foot down and pushed Gibsieโs Focus as hard as it could go, all the while wishing we were in my Audi.
Unlike before, Shannon didnโt complain about my driving. Instead, she rolled down the window and rested her cheek against the door, smiling softly when the wind blasted against her face.
We couldnโt go back to Shannonโs house because, aside from the fact that I was banned from stepping foot on the property, I was likely to cause serious physical harm to that brother of hers, and we couldnโt go back to my place because if I rolled into the driveway behind the wheel of a car, my mother was likely to cause serious physical harm toย me.
One of the best parts of living on the south coast of Ireland was that you were never far from water, so I detoured onto the coastal road, abandoning Ballylaggin altogether. It was half nine in the morning, and with the exception of the odd dog-walker, we should get some peace and quiet.
โArenโt you going to ask me where weโre going?โ I asked, casting a quick sideways glance her way before refocusing on the narrow, potholed road ahead of me.
โNo,โ she replied softly.
โNo?โ I cocked a brow. โWhy not?โ
She opened her eyes and turned to look at me. โBecause I trust you.โ
Well shite.
Reaching over, I took her right hand in mine and pulled it onto my lap.
Several hours later, Shannon and I were on what had to be our hundredth lap of the beach, and I was trying not to think about my stomach too much. I had eaten my entire supply of lunch for the day not long after parking up this morning โ protein shakes and all โ and I was stillย starving. I was putting my hunger down to the sea air, because I sure as hell wasnโt burning up enough energy to be craving meat, unless trying to keep my head on straight with Shannon in close proximity constituted as strenuous activity. My heart certainly thought so, as it did the rounds in my chest, leaping around like a fucking jack-hammer. Or maybe it was the nerves making me hungry? Hell, Iโd never been a nervous eater, but Jesus, this girl did strange things to my internal system.
Falling into step beside Shannon, I forced my legs to move, concentrating on putting one foot in front of the other and just moving. She didnโt make any comment on my pace or how fucking pathetic I looked as I shuffled awkwardly alongside her, freeing out my stiff muscles.
Every once and a while, I would test the waters by holding myself slightly back from her, or inconspicuously stepping a few feet out of touching distance, pretending to look at something that wasnโt there, while I held my breath and waited to see what her next move would be. She skittishly closed the space every single time, moving closer and closer until she was sidled back up to my side. I did that at least four times just to make sure that this was where she wanted to be โ with me โ because it scared me sometimes, not knowing what was going on inside that head of hers.
Every now and then,ย sheย would stop for a couple of minutes to check a shell on the sand, or pretend to adjust her tights, but I knew that was bullshit. She was giving me pitstops. She was stopping so I could rest.
It was lashing rain down on us, but it didnโt seem to bother Shannon. She seemed perfectly content to be here with me.
She was talking again, too; answering every stupid question my brain could think up as we wandered, side by side, over the rocks and wet sand. The more random and pointless my questions were, the more Shannon relaxed, so I asked her everything; from her preference between Nike and Adidas, to her views on the big bang theory, until she was laughing and talking freely. I hashed up every fucked-up thought and memory I could to keep that smile on her face, never once bringing her father into conversation. She didnโt want to talk about her family, and to be honest, neither did I.
I wanted to give her a good day to make up for the bad ones, or at the very least, make her day a little better.
โAre you okay?โ Shannon asked as she stood at the bottom of a rock, waiting on the sand for me to climb down to her. Her face was flushed from windburn, matching mine, and she was bouncing the rugby ball weโd found in the boot of Gibsieโs car this morning between her hands.
โAll good.โ Every inch of my body was burning up and I knew all the climbing was wreaking havoc on my injury, but I replied with a muffled, โJust give me a sec,โ as I resisted the urge to sit on my arse and shimmy down like a fucking girl.
โYou can do it, Johnny,โ she encouraged, smiling brightly. โYouโve got this.โ
I really wasnโt sure if Iย had thisย or not, but I moved my legs all the same and prayed for the strength I needed to keep myself upright as I hobbled down the rocks at a snailโs pace, feeling every ache and burn in my muscles, until I was standing in front of her with my feet planted firmly in the sand.
โAre you ready?โ she asked, sounding a little breathless as a playful smile tipped at her lips.
โYeah.โ I nodded, feeling the burn on my skin from having her eyes on me. โGo for it.โ
She held the ball out for me to take, but when I reached for it, she backed up a few feet.
A small smile curled at my lips and I tilted my head, studying her mischievous expression. โOh, so itโs going to be like that?โ
Shannon laughed loudly โ she actually fuckingย laughedย โ and nodded. โCome and get it, Mister Rugby.โ
Shaking my head, I trudged after her, my movements stiff and awkward, but she didnโt seem to notice, or she didnโt care. She was smiling encouragingly and nodding at me to follow her as she bounced a few feet out of my grasp every time I got close enough to snatch the ball.
She looked fucking adorable as she ran several yards up the beach with the rugby ball in her small hands. Her wooly hat and scarf swamped her face and that mountain of dark hair was blowing around her, with wet clumps sticking to her rosy cheeks. Rain was dripping from her coat, her school skirt was drenched through and clinging to her bare legs, and I swear, I had never seen anything so fucking beautiful.
Freedom suited her.
โShannon, I canโt,โ I called after her when she ran too far ahead of me for the millionth time. โIโm too stiff.โย And embarrassedโฆ
โNo, youโre not,โ she encouraged, breathless and beaming back at me. โYouโre just out of practice.โ Turning around so that she was walking backwards, facing me, she said, โItโs just us, Johnny โ just you and me. And youย canย do this,โ Shannon repeated, looking more confident in this moment than I had ever seen her. โI promise.โ
โYeah?โ
โYes.โ She skipped ahead of me with my ball in her hands and my heart in her ass pocket. Christ, she had me hook, line, and sinker, as I trailed after her like she was holding a fishing rod with a line that was attached to something deep inside of me.
Forcing down my anxiety, I did as she asked; I lowered my defenses and moved my legs.
โWell, well, well,โ Shannon taunted from further up the beach a little while later. Bouncing the ball in her hands, she gleamed at me. โLooks like I winย again.โ
โI think the power is getting to your head,โ I shot back, grinning. โGive me that ball.โ
โNever,โ she laughed. โItโs mine. You gave it to me, and Iโm not giving it back.โ
Like my fucking heart?
โThrow it,โ I encouraged.
Her eyes widened. โHuh?โ
โThe ball,โ I called back. โThrow it and Iโll pass it back to you.โ
She eyed me warily. โYou promise?โ
โYes, Shannon.โ I rolled my eyes. โI promise Iโll give you back the bleeding ball.โ
โOkay.โ Like a toddler throwing a ball, Shannon held it between her legs, and with her brows set in deep concentration, she tossed it into the air โ and about ten feet in the wrong direction.
โI didnโt realize I was playing with one of the minis,โ I laughed, as I went to retrieve it. โRemind me to get you one of those child slides when I take you bowling.โ
โHey โ Iโm all youโve got, thirteen,โ Shannon called back, grinning. โSo donโt mock me.โ
Sheย wasย all I had right now โ the only person I could trust not to judge me for not being on form.
I couldnโt do this with the lads.
I would be too embarrassed.
But it was different with Shannon.
Everything was different when it came to her.
