Chapter no 30

Keeping 13 (Boys of Tommen #2)

After lunch, I went to the office to speak with principal Twomey and my year head, Miss Nyhan.

True to his word, Johnny came with me. Of course, Mr. Twomey didnโ€™t want him there and tried to shoo him out of the office, but Johnny didnโ€™t budge. It was quite comical to see our 5โ€™8, aging principal, with his balding hairline and paunchy, middle-age spread belly,ย shooย a 6โ€™3 rugby player. What was even funnier was Johnnyโ€™s WTF expression when Mr. Twomey patted on his chest. Well, I was sure he was pushing on Johnnyโ€™s chest, not patting it, but he had that little of an effect on Johnny that it kind of reminded me of a blue-bottle fly buzzing around a bear.

When Mr. Twomey conceded and gestured for us both to sit down, Johnny took the seat beside me, and while he didnโ€™t hold my hand, just having him sit beside me gave me this weird form of courage.

I couldnโ€™t explain it, but I felt braver when I was with him. Or maybe I just felt safer? It was strange considering I never felt more off-balance than I did when I was with him, but it was a good type of off-balance โ€“ an excited, sick to my stomach, about to keel over at any moment but donโ€™t stop touching me because my heartโ€™s going to burst in my chest and I need to feel you everywhere or Iโ€™ll explode, kind of off-balance.

I answered all of the standard, mandatory questions doled out to me by Mr. Twomey and Miss Nyhan, accepted all theย Iโ€™m so sorry this happened to youย andย donโ€™t be afraid to talk to usย small talk and then I went on my way, forcing myself to sit through my last three classes.

Surprisingly, I coped very well with the stares and hushed whispers from my classmates and the sympathetic gazes from my teachers. I guess it helped that Lizzie had melded herself to my side and was emanating some pretty seriousย fuck with me and Iโ€™ll cut your heart outย vibes.

When the final bell rang at 4pm, signaling the end of our school day, I was feeling warily optimistic.

Like maybe Iย couldย do this after all.

Like maybe I could actually get my life back on track.

โ€˜Do you want to come over to my place?โ€™ Claire asked, leaning against my desk, watching as I piled my books back into my schoolbag after our last class. Aside from Miss Moore, who was sitting at her desk, we were the last two people in the classroom, with everyone running for the hills the moment the bell sounded, including Lizzie, who had dashed off to meet Pierce, muttering something about a personal crisis. โ€˜Even for an hour?โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™d love to,โ€™ I replied, zipping my bag closed before standing up. โ€˜But Darrenโ€™s probably waiting outside for me already.โ€™ Grabbing my chair, I hoisted it onto the table, and turned to face her. โ€˜Iโ€™m being monitored.โ€™

โ€˜Ugh.โ€™ Claire scrunched her nose up in distaste. โ€˜Your family is beyond messed up.โ€™

โ€˜Yep.โ€™ Hoisting my bag onto my back, I gave her a solemn nod. โ€˜Couldnโ€™t agree more.โ€™

โ€˜Do you want to just come anyway?โ€™ she asked as we walked out of the classroom and into the hallway. โ€˜Like ditch Darren?โ€™ Grinning mischievously, she fell into step alongside me as we headed for the main entrance. โ€˜Gerard has the car and I know heโ€™d give us both a spin back to my house.โ€™

โ€˜What was going on with him at break?โ€™ I asked, curious. Tightening my grasp on my shoulder straps, I walked briskly to keep up. โ€˜He just ran out at lunch and never came back.โ€™

โ€˜I donโ€™t know, Shan, and sometimes I think Iโ€™m better off that way.โ€™ Sighing, she added, โ€˜Something tells me that if I knew, it would be painful.โ€™

โ€˜Claire.โ€™ I looked at her sad expression. โ€˜Are you okay?โ€™

She nodded and offered me a watery smile. โ€˜Iโ€™m fine.โ€™

โ€˜Why donโ€™t you just tell him how you feel?โ€™ I asked gently. โ€˜Itโ€™s obvious that he feels the same way.โ€™

โ€˜He doesnโ€™t,โ€™ she mumbled. โ€˜Itโ€™s all about the chase for him. If I give in now, heโ€™ll get bored.โ€™

I pondered her words for a moment before saying, โ€˜He might surprise you?โ€™

โ€˜And I might disappoint him,โ€™ she mumbled.

I stopped walking. โ€˜What do you mean?โ€™

She turned back to face me but didnโ€™t respond.

I studied her pained expression and blew out a breath. โ€˜Claire, you couldnโ€™t disappoint anyone if you tried.โ€™

โ€˜Yeah.โ€™

โ€˜I mean it,โ€™ I pushed. โ€˜And least of all Gibsie. Heย adoresย you. Itโ€™s as plain as the nose on his face that heโ€™s mad about you.โ€™

โ€˜Because heย canโ€™tย have me,โ€™ she muttered. โ€˜Because Iโ€™m the one girl who hasnโ€™t given into him.โ€™

โ€˜I donโ€™t think thatโ€™s it,โ€™ I replied slowly. โ€˜Not in the slightest.โ€™

โ€˜Listen, this isnโ€™t a new thing, Shan. You know that. Gerard and I have been like this since as far back as my memory goes. Heโ€™s always โ€˜wanted meโ€™ย and Iโ€™ve always played it downย โ€“โ€˜ Her words broke off and she groaned, like talking about this physically pained her. โ€˜Because I donโ€™t believe him.โ€™

โ€˜You donโ€™t?โ€™

โ€˜No, I donโ€™t.โ€™ Her brown eyes burned with vulnerability as she spoke, โ€˜I know Gerard Gibson better than anyone on this planet โ€“ hell, I know him better than he knows himself โ€“ and trust me when I tell you that boy canโ€™t pay attention to anything for longer than aย day. Iโ€™ve seen it โ€“ the way he is with girls. Heโ€™ll give a girl everything for one day and then heโ€™s onto the next one. I donโ€™t even think he can help it. I know he doesnโ€™t do it on purpose.โ€™ Her cheeks flushed bright pink. โ€˜But I canโ€™t be just anotherย dayย to him โ€“ just anotherย girl. I donโ€™t want to pour my heart out to him, only for him to turn right around and realize that the chase was more fun than the catch.โ€™ Shrugging helplessly, she added, โ€˜I think it would break me.โ€™

โ€˜Have you talked to Lizzie about this?โ€™ I asked. โ€˜What did she say?โ€™

โ€˜I havenโ€™t told anyone,โ€™ she whispered. โ€˜Just you.โ€™

My heart cracked. โ€˜Oh my god,ย Claireโ€ฆโ€˜

โ€˜Itโ€™s fine,โ€™ she hurried to say, slapping on a bright smile. โ€˜Iโ€™m fine.โ€™ Breaking into a brisk walk that had me jogging to keep up, Claire yanked open the glass door of the main building and ushered me out first. โ€˜Everything is fine.โ€™

It clearly wasnโ€™t.

โ€˜Iโ€™ll come over,โ€™ I blurted out breathlessly, struggling to keep up with her long strides as she trudged through the courtyard. โ€˜If you think itโ€™ll be okay with your parents?โ€™

โ€˜You will?โ€™ Her whole expression brightened. โ€˜Of course! My parents love you.โ€™

I nodded and continued to waddle/run. โ€˜Okay, just let me tell Darren โ€“ and slow down. Iโ€™m not a racehorse.โ€™

โ€˜Sorry,โ€™ she giggled, slowing her pace to what I considered a brisk walk. โ€˜Thank you for doing this.โ€™

โ€˜No problem,โ€™ I replied, swallowing back a groan at the thought of facing Darren. โ€˜Anytime.โ€™

When we reached the carpark and my eyes landed on Darrenโ€™s blue Volvo, I missed my step and stumbled a little. I stumbled even further when I noticed the silver Ford Focus parked three spots up โ€“ not to mention the four boys leaning against the side of said Focus, with their heads down, deep in conversation.

Righting myself before I face planted the gravel, I straightened my shoulders, took a deep breath, and walked over to the Volvo. The smile my brother was wearing slowly slipped when he registered that I was moving towards the driver side of the car rather than the passenger side.

โ€˜What are you doing?โ€™ Darren asked, winding down the window when I tapped on it. โ€˜Climb in โ€“ Iโ€™ve got to get the boys home for training.โ€™

Glancing into the back seat, I smiled at my three little brothers. โ€˜Hey, guys.โ€™ Ollie and Sean smile back at me, but Tadhg ignored me, keeping his glowering stare fixed on the back of Darrenโ€™s head.

โ€˜Whatโ€™s going on?โ€™ Darren asked, dragging my attention back to him.

โ€˜Iโ€™m going to go to Claireโ€™s house for an hour,โ€™ I said, forcing back the wordsย if thatโ€™s okay. He was my brother. I didnโ€™t need his permission.ย I didnโ€™t.ย โ€˜Iโ€™ll be home later, okay?โ€™

โ€˜Shannon, we talked about this.โ€™ Darrenโ€™s expression darkened. โ€˜You need to come home straight after school.โ€™

โ€˜No.โ€™ I shook my head and tightened my grasp on the shoulder straps of my schoolbag. โ€˜You and Mam talked about this. I never agreed to stay inside twenty-four-seven.โ€™

โ€˜Sheโ€™s going to have a coronary if you donโ€™t come home,โ€™ he bit out. โ€˜You know the way she gets. I canโ€™t handle her like that, so I need you to come home andย helpย me.โ€™

โ€˜I donโ€™t care,โ€™ I shot back, and surprisingly, I meant it. I didnโ€™t care. Not anymore. โ€˜Iโ€™m going to spend some time with my friend like a normal teenager and then Iโ€™ll come home.โ€™

โ€˜Weโ€™re not dealing with normal circumstances,โ€™ he ground out, jaw clenched.

Didnโ€™t I know itโ€ฆย โ€˜You can say whatever you want, but Iโ€™m still going with Claire.โ€™

He narrowed his eyes. โ€˜Get in the car.โ€™

I held my ground. โ€˜No.โ€™

โ€˜Get. In. The. Car. Shannon.โ€™

Anxiety flared to life inside of me. โ€˜No.โ€™

Unfastening his seatbelt, Darren shoved the car door open and climbed out. โ€˜Get in the fucking car.โ€™ Gripping the door with white knuckles, he hissed, โ€˜Now, Shannon.โ€™

โ€˜Back off, buddy,โ€™ Claire warned, coming to stand beside me. โ€˜I have a weapon โ€“โ€™ she pointed over Darrenโ€™s shoulder, โ€˜Heโ€™s right over there and Iโ€™m not afraid to call him.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m not going toย hurtย her,โ€™ Darren shot back, looking appalled. โ€˜I just need her to get in the car and come home.โ€™

โ€˜Thereโ€™s no problem, Darren,โ€™ Claire shot back. โ€˜Shannonโ€™s going to come over to my house. Weโ€™re going to eat some junk, watch TV, and then my mom or Hughie will drop her home. No harm done.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m supposed to bring you home,โ€™ Darren stated, ignoring Claire. โ€˜You can go over to your friendโ€™s house some other day, when Iโ€™ve spoken to her parents first.โ€™ Shaking his head, he placed a hand on my shoulder and steered me towards the passenger side of the car. โ€˜Just cut me some slack here and get in the car โ€“โ€™

โ€˜No,โ€™ I choked out, digging my heels into the concrete. โ€˜Iโ€™m not going home.โ€™

โ€˜Shannon โ€“โ€™ Exhaling a heavy sigh, Darren placed both hands on my shoulders and looked down at me. โ€˜Itโ€™s not safe for you to be out.โ€™

โ€˜She doesnโ€™t want to go with you!โ€™ Claire screamed at the top of her lungs. โ€˜She saidย no!โ€™

Stunned, I looked back at my friend, wondering why she had suddenly raised her voice. Darren hadnโ€™t hurt me โ€“ not physically, at least. But when I spotted Johnny, Gibsie, Hughie, and Feely all watching us with thunderous expressions on their faces, I quickly realized why.

She was calling for reinforcements.

Oh godโ€ฆ

โ€˜Donโ€™t do it,โ€™ Gibsie was shouting, โ€˜Donโ€™t fucking do it, Capโ€“โ€™

โ€˜Hey โ€“ what the fuck do you think youโ€™re doing?โ€™ Johnny demanded as he shoved past his friends, limp forgotten. โ€˜Get your fucking hands off her!โ€™ he roared. โ€˜Now.โ€™

โ€˜I canโ€™t catch a break today.โ€™ Releasing a pained groan, Gibsie tipped his head back, not bothering to try and stop the potential carnage. โ€˜Have at it, bulldozer โ€“ and donโ€™t forget your crutch.โ€™

โ€˜Donโ€™t give himย that,โ€™ Feely snapped, snatching the metal stick out of Gibsieโ€™s hand before Johnny could. โ€˜Itโ€™s a weapon.โ€™

โ€˜Have you seen the size of him?โ€™ Hughie offered with a despondent sigh. โ€˜Heโ€™sย the fucking weapon.โ€™

โ€˜Jesus Christ,โ€™ Darren grumbled, spinning around to look at the boys. โ€˜Stay out of it, Kavanagh.โ€™

โ€˜If you want to keep your arm, I would listen to him,โ€™ Gibsie called out as he intercepted Johnny before he reached us. Slamming both hands against Johnnyโ€™s chest, he tried to push him away from the car. โ€˜Because heโ€™s a little testy right now, and Iโ€™m not wholeheartedly invested in keeping you alive if he breaks free.โ€™ Shrugging, he added, โ€˜Just sayingโ€ฆโ€™

โ€˜Itโ€™s okay!โ€™ Jumping into action for once in my life, I slipped under his arm and backed away. โ€˜He wasnโ€™t doing anything.โ€™

โ€˜He wasย touchingย you,โ€™ Johnny snarled, glaring at my brother with an expression that was borderline feral. โ€˜He was trying toย putย you in the car.โ€™

โ€˜And she said no!โ€™ Claire poked the bear by adding. โ€˜A million times.โ€™

โ€˜I wasnโ€™tย hurtingย her,โ€™ Darren sneered. โ€˜Iโ€™m not that guy.โ€™

โ€˜Heโ€™s not,โ€™ I was quick to defend. โ€˜He wouldnโ€™t do that to me.โ€™

โ€˜I donโ€™t believe you, Shannon,โ€™ Johnny shot back, livid. โ€˜You lied to me before.โ€™ He narrowed his eyes on my brother. โ€˜And I donโ€™t believeย him.โ€™

โ€˜Are you accusing me of abusing my sister?โ€™ Darren asked, voice deathly cold. โ€˜Because youโ€™ve got it all wrong.โ€™

โ€˜Kind of like how your mother got it all wrong when she accused me of being a rapist?โ€™ Johnny shot back without missing a beat. โ€˜Difference is, Iย sawย you put your hands on her, Darren.โ€™ Narrowing his eyes, he spat, โ€˜So if I were you, Iโ€™d climb back into that car and get the fuck out of here before I do something weโ€™ll all regret.โ€™

Darren stared hard at Johnny for several long, palpable moments before throwing his hands up. โ€˜You know what, Shannon?โ€™ he said, laughing humorlessly. โ€˜Mam might be fucked in the head, but sheโ€™s dead on the money about him being like our old man.โ€™ Stalking around to the driverโ€™s side of the car, he opened his door. โ€˜But hey โ€“ you do whatever the hell you want.โ€™

With that, he climbed in and slammed the door shut. Revving the engine, Darren pulled out of the parking spot and tore off without so much as a backwards glance. I watched the three small faces staring out the back window of the car until it faded out of sight.

โ€˜Well,โ€™ Gibsie said in a cheerful tone, breaking the frigid silence. โ€˜That escalated quickly.โ€™

โ€˜Yeah,โ€™ I breathed.

Understatement of the century.
