After lunch, I went to the office to speak with principal Twomey and my year head, Miss Nyhan.
True to his word, Johnny came with me. Of course, Mr. Twomey didnโt want him there and tried to shoo him out of the office, but Johnny didnโt budge. It was quite comical to see our 5โ8, aging principal, with his balding hairline and paunchy, middle-age spread belly,ย shooย a 6โ3 rugby player. What was even funnier was Johnnyโs WTF expression when Mr. Twomey patted on his chest. Well, I was sure he was pushing on Johnnyโs chest, not patting it, but he had that little of an effect on Johnny that it kind of reminded me of a blue-bottle fly buzzing around a bear.
When Mr. Twomey conceded and gestured for us both to sit down, Johnny took the seat beside me, and while he didnโt hold my hand, just having him sit beside me gave me this weird form of courage.
I couldnโt explain it, but I felt braver when I was with him. Or maybe I just felt safer? It was strange considering I never felt more off-balance than I did when I was with him, but it was a good type of off-balance โ an excited, sick to my stomach, about to keel over at any moment but donโt stop touching me because my heartโs going to burst in my chest and I need to feel you everywhere or Iโll explode, kind of off-balance.
I answered all of the standard, mandatory questions doled out to me by Mr. Twomey and Miss Nyhan, accepted all theย Iโm so sorry this happened to youย andย donโt be afraid to talk to usย small talk and then I went on my way, forcing myself to sit through my last three classes.
Surprisingly, I coped very well with the stares and hushed whispers from my classmates and the sympathetic gazes from my teachers. I guess it helped that Lizzie had melded herself to my side and was emanating some pretty seriousย fuck with me and Iโll cut your heart outย vibes.
When the final bell rang at 4pm, signaling the end of our school day, I was feeling warily optimistic.
Like maybe Iย couldย do this after all.
Like maybe I could actually get my life back on track.
โDo you want to come over to my place?โ Claire asked, leaning against my desk, watching as I piled my books back into my schoolbag after our last class. Aside from Miss Moore, who was sitting at her desk, we were the last two people in the classroom, with everyone running for the hills the moment the bell sounded, including Lizzie, who had dashed off to meet Pierce, muttering something about a personal crisis. โEven for an hour?โ
โIโd love to,โ I replied, zipping my bag closed before standing up. โBut Darrenโs probably waiting outside for me already.โ Grabbing my chair, I hoisted it onto the table, and turned to face her. โIโm being monitored.โ
โUgh.โ Claire scrunched her nose up in distaste. โYour family is beyond messed up.โ
โYep.โ Hoisting my bag onto my back, I gave her a solemn nod. โCouldnโt agree more.โ
โDo you want to just come anyway?โ she asked as we walked out of the classroom and into the hallway. โLike ditch Darren?โ Grinning mischievously, she fell into step alongside me as we headed for the main entrance. โGerard has the car and I know heโd give us both a spin back to my house.โ
โWhat was going on with him at break?โ I asked, curious. Tightening my grasp on my shoulder straps, I walked briskly to keep up. โHe just ran out at lunch and never came back.โ
โI donโt know, Shan, and sometimes I think Iโm better off that way.โ Sighing, she added, โSomething tells me that if I knew, it would be painful.โ
โClaire.โ I looked at her sad expression. โAre you okay?โ
She nodded and offered me a watery smile. โIโm fine.โ
โWhy donโt you just tell him how you feel?โ I asked gently. โItโs obvious that he feels the same way.โ
โHe doesnโt,โ she mumbled. โItโs all about the chase for him. If I give in now, heโll get bored.โ
I pondered her words for a moment before saying, โHe might surprise you?โ
โAnd I might disappoint him,โ she mumbled.
I stopped walking. โWhat do you mean?โ
She turned back to face me but didnโt respond.
I studied her pained expression and blew out a breath. โClaire, you couldnโt disappoint anyone if you tried.โ
โYeah.โ
โI mean it,โ I pushed. โAnd least of all Gibsie. Heย adoresย you. Itโs as plain as the nose on his face that heโs mad about you.โ
โBecause heย canโtย have me,โ she muttered. โBecause Iโm the one girl who hasnโt given into him.โ
โI donโt think thatโs it,โ I replied slowly. โNot in the slightest.โ
โListen, this isnโt a new thing, Shan. You know that. Gerard and I have been like this since as far back as my memory goes. Heโs always โwanted meโย and Iโve always played it downย โโ Her words broke off and she groaned, like talking about this physically pained her. โBecause I donโt believe him.โ
โYou donโt?โ
โNo, I donโt.โ Her brown eyes burned with vulnerability as she spoke, โI know Gerard Gibson better than anyone on this planet โ hell, I know him better than he knows himself โ and trust me when I tell you that boy canโt pay attention to anything for longer than aย day. Iโve seen it โ the way he is with girls. Heโll give a girl everything for one day and then heโs onto the next one. I donโt even think he can help it. I know he doesnโt do it on purpose.โ Her cheeks flushed bright pink. โBut I canโt be just anotherย dayย to him โ just anotherย girl. I donโt want to pour my heart out to him, only for him to turn right around and realize that the chase was more fun than the catch.โ Shrugging helplessly, she added, โI think it would break me.โ
โHave you talked to Lizzie about this?โ I asked. โWhat did she say?โ
โI havenโt told anyone,โ she whispered. โJust you.โ
My heart cracked. โOh my god,ย Claireโฆโ
โItโs fine,โ she hurried to say, slapping on a bright smile. โIโm fine.โ Breaking into a brisk walk that had me jogging to keep up, Claire yanked open the glass door of the main building and ushered me out first. โEverything is fine.โ
It clearly wasnโt.
โIโll come over,โ I blurted out breathlessly, struggling to keep up with her long strides as she trudged through the courtyard. โIf you think itโll be okay with your parents?โ
โYou will?โ Her whole expression brightened. โOf course! My parents love you.โ
I nodded and continued to waddle/run. โOkay, just let me tell Darren โ and slow down. Iโm not a racehorse.โ
โSorry,โ she giggled, slowing her pace to what I considered a brisk walk. โThank you for doing this.โ
โNo problem,โ I replied, swallowing back a groan at the thought of facing Darren. โAnytime.โ
When we reached the carpark and my eyes landed on Darrenโs blue Volvo, I missed my step and stumbled a little. I stumbled even further when I noticed the silver Ford Focus parked three spots up โ not to mention the four boys leaning against the side of said Focus, with their heads down, deep in conversation.
Righting myself before I face planted the gravel, I straightened my shoulders, took a deep breath, and walked over to the Volvo. The smile my brother was wearing slowly slipped when he registered that I was moving towards the driver side of the car rather than the passenger side.
โWhat are you doing?โ Darren asked, winding down the window when I tapped on it. โClimb in โ Iโve got to get the boys home for training.โ
Glancing into the back seat, I smiled at my three little brothers. โHey, guys.โ Ollie and Sean smile back at me, but Tadhg ignored me, keeping his glowering stare fixed on the back of Darrenโs head.
โWhatโs going on?โ Darren asked, dragging my attention back to him.
โIโm going to go to Claireโs house for an hour,โ I said, forcing back the wordsย if thatโs okay. He was my brother. I didnโt need his permission.ย I didnโt.ย โIโll be home later, okay?โ
โShannon, we talked about this.โ Darrenโs expression darkened. โYou need to come home straight after school.โ
โNo.โ I shook my head and tightened my grasp on the shoulder straps of my schoolbag. โYou and Mam talked about this. I never agreed to stay inside twenty-four-seven.โ
โSheโs going to have a coronary if you donโt come home,โ he bit out. โYou know the way she gets. I canโt handle her like that, so I need you to come home andย helpย me.โ
โI donโt care,โ I shot back, and surprisingly, I meant it. I didnโt care. Not anymore. โIโm going to spend some time with my friend like a normal teenager and then Iโll come home.โ
โWeโre not dealing with normal circumstances,โ he ground out, jaw clenched.
Didnโt I know itโฆย โYou can say whatever you want, but Iโm still going with Claire.โ
He narrowed his eyes. โGet in the car.โ
I held my ground. โNo.โ
โGet. In. The. Car. Shannon.โ
Anxiety flared to life inside of me. โNo.โ
Unfastening his seatbelt, Darren shoved the car door open and climbed out. โGet in the fucking car.โ Gripping the door with white knuckles, he hissed, โNow, Shannon.โ
โBack off, buddy,โ Claire warned, coming to stand beside me. โI have a weapon โโ she pointed over Darrenโs shoulder, โHeโs right over there and Iโm not afraid to call him.โ
โIโm not going toย hurtย her,โ Darren shot back, looking appalled. โI just need her to get in the car and come home.โ
โThereโs no problem, Darren,โ Claire shot back. โShannonโs going to come over to my house. Weโre going to eat some junk, watch TV, and then my mom or Hughie will drop her home. No harm done.โ
โIโm supposed to bring you home,โ Darren stated, ignoring Claire. โYou can go over to your friendโs house some other day, when Iโve spoken to her parents first.โ Shaking his head, he placed a hand on my shoulder and steered me towards the passenger side of the car. โJust cut me some slack here and get in the car โโ
โNo,โ I choked out, digging my heels into the concrete. โIโm not going home.โ
โShannon โโ Exhaling a heavy sigh, Darren placed both hands on my shoulders and looked down at me. โItโs not safe for you to be out.โ
โShe doesnโt want to go with you!โ Claire screamed at the top of her lungs. โShe saidย no!โ
Stunned, I looked back at my friend, wondering why she had suddenly raised her voice. Darren hadnโt hurt me โ not physically, at least. But when I spotted Johnny, Gibsie, Hughie, and Feely all watching us with thunderous expressions on their faces, I quickly realized why.
She was calling for reinforcements.
Oh godโฆ
โDonโt do it,โ Gibsie was shouting, โDonโt fucking do it, Capโโ
โHey โ what the fuck do you think youโre doing?โ Johnny demanded as he shoved past his friends, limp forgotten. โGet your fucking hands off her!โ he roared. โNow.โ
โI canโt catch a break today.โ Releasing a pained groan, Gibsie tipped his head back, not bothering to try and stop the potential carnage. โHave at it, bulldozer โ and donโt forget your crutch.โ
โDonโt give himย that,โ Feely snapped, snatching the metal stick out of Gibsieโs hand before Johnny could. โItโs a weapon.โ
โHave you seen the size of him?โ Hughie offered with a despondent sigh. โHeโsย the fucking weapon.โ
โJesus Christ,โ Darren grumbled, spinning around to look at the boys. โStay out of it, Kavanagh.โ
โIf you want to keep your arm, I would listen to him,โ Gibsie called out as he intercepted Johnny before he reached us. Slamming both hands against Johnnyโs chest, he tried to push him away from the car. โBecause heโs a little testy right now, and Iโm not wholeheartedly invested in keeping you alive if he breaks free.โ Shrugging, he added, โJust sayingโฆโ
โItโs okay!โ Jumping into action for once in my life, I slipped under his arm and backed away. โHe wasnโt doing anything.โ
โHe wasย touchingย you,โ Johnny snarled, glaring at my brother with an expression that was borderline feral. โHe was trying toย putย you in the car.โ
โAnd she said no!โ Claire poked the bear by adding. โA million times.โ
โI wasnโtย hurtingย her,โ Darren sneered. โIโm not that guy.โ
โHeโs not,โ I was quick to defend. โHe wouldnโt do that to me.โ
โI donโt believe you, Shannon,โ Johnny shot back, livid. โYou lied to me before.โ He narrowed his eyes on my brother. โAnd I donโt believeย him.โ
โAre you accusing me of abusing my sister?โ Darren asked, voice deathly cold. โBecause youโve got it all wrong.โ
โKind of like how your mother got it all wrong when she accused me of being a rapist?โ Johnny shot back without missing a beat. โDifference is, Iย sawย you put your hands on her, Darren.โ Narrowing his eyes, he spat, โSo if I were you, Iโd climb back into that car and get the fuck out of here before I do something weโll all regret.โ
Darren stared hard at Johnny for several long, palpable moments before throwing his hands up. โYou know what, Shannon?โ he said, laughing humorlessly. โMam might be fucked in the head, but sheโs dead on the money about him being like our old man.โ Stalking around to the driverโs side of the car, he opened his door. โBut hey โ you do whatever the hell you want.โ
With that, he climbed in and slammed the door shut. Revving the engine, Darren pulled out of the parking spot and tore off without so much as a backwards glance. I watched the three small faces staring out the back window of the car until it faded out of sight.
โWell,โ Gibsie said in a cheerful tone, breaking the frigid silence. โThat escalated quickly.โ
โYeah,โ I breathed.
Understatement of the century.
