Chapter no 14

Keeping 13 (Boys of Tommen #2)

โ€˜Okay, we need to think this through,โ€™ Gibsie announced as he pulled onto the main road near my house. โ€˜Bring some sort of deflection with us โ€“ a carrot to dangle in case they turn us away.โ€™

โ€˜A carrot?โ€™ I turned my head and glared at him. โ€˜The fuck are you talking about? We donโ€™t need carrots and deflections, Gibs. Weโ€™re going to drive over to her house, park the car, and knock on the bleeding door.โ€™

Gibsie rolled his eyes. โ€˜You have no tact. Here, pull my phone out โ€“ itโ€™s in my pocket.โ€™

โ€˜I donโ€™t need tact,โ€™ I grumbled, but I did as he asked. He took the phone from my hands and I steered while he dialed. โ€˜Youโ€™ll get points on your license for this,โ€™ I muttered, grateful to be in control of something for once, even if was only a steering wheel.

Gibsie grinned and pressed the phone to his ear. โ€˜Only if I get caught โ€“ hey, howโ€™s it going, babe? I need you to be outside in five โ€“ yeah, five minutes. Why? Because Iโ€™m picking you up, thatโ€™s why. Yeah, donโ€™t waste time asking questions. Just put your coat on and meet me at the bottom of your driveway. Itโ€™s cold outside so wear the red one.โ€™ He grinned, clearly getting a mouthful down the line before saying, โ€˜I know youโ€™re at home because I saw you watching me from my bedroom window earlier โ€“ yeah, I know you stalk me, too. Yeah, you hate me. I know. Iโ€™ve heard it all before, babe. I love you, too.โ€™

โ€˜Weโ€™re bringing Claire?โ€™ I asked when he ended the call.

Gibsie nodded. โ€˜It makes more sense than two lads showing up on their own.โ€™ Shrugging, he added, โ€˜Shannonโ€™s her best friend, lad. She hasnโ€™t been able to make contact with her since Dublin. Girlโ€™s a nervous wreck over it all.โ€™

I shrugged. โ€˜Fair enough.โ€™

Five minutes later, we pulled onto Hughie and Gibsieโ€™s street and were greeted by a scowling Claire, who was standing at the bottom of her driveway, holding a neon pink umbrella to protect herself from the March downpour.

โ€˜Whatโ€™s this about, Gerard? Whatโ€™s the big emergency?โ€™ she asked, climbing into the back seat when Gibsie pulled up beside her. โ€˜Oh, hey Johnny,โ€™ she added, softening her tone a little. โ€˜I hope youโ€™re feeling better.โ€™

โ€˜All good,โ€™ I replied, feeling uncomfortable knowing that she knew.

โ€˜Kav here, has coerced me into driving over to Shannonโ€™s house,โ€™ Gibsie said. โ€˜Thought youโ€™d want to come.โ€™

โ€˜I do.โ€™ Leaning forward, Claire poked her head out between our seats. โ€˜But they wonโ€™t let you through the front door. I had Hughie drive me over there on Friday to see her, but her mother told me she was in bed.โ€™ Claire scrunched her nose up as she spoke. โ€˜She wouldnโ€™t even hear me out, guys. She said Shan was too tired for visitors and just dismissed me.โ€™

Fury raced through me.

No goddamn way was I going to be dismissed by that woman or any member of their family.

โ€˜Simmer down, Cap,โ€™ Gibsie instructed calmly. It was only then that I noticed my knuckles had turned white from the force of clenching them. โ€˜Weโ€™ll see her.โ€™

โ€˜Youโ€™re damn fucking straight we will.โ€™

โ€˜I know she lives in Elk Terrace,โ€™ Gibsie said. โ€˜But thatโ€™s a huge terrace โ€“โ€™

โ€™95 โ€“ she lives at 95,โ€™ Claire and I said in unison.

โ€˜Jinx,โ€™ Claire chuckled.

โ€˜You know, Claire-bear, if you want to un-jinx yourself, you can always touch my wood,โ€™ Gibsie offered.

โ€˜No thanks, I donโ€™t like wood,โ€™ Claire shot back. โ€˜Or penises.โ€™

โ€˜I remember,โ€™ Gibsie chuckled. โ€˜Wait โ€“ is that the plural for penis? Penises?โ€™

โ€˜Probably,โ€™ Claire replied, placing a hand on his shoulder. โ€˜I mean, plural for vagina is vaginas, so it sort of has to be, doesnโ€™t it?โ€™

โ€˜I thought the plural for vagina was vaginae,โ€™ he offered, and then after a thoughtful pause, added, โ€˜You know what, I think plural for penis is penii.โ€™

โ€˜Oh my god, Gerard, literally nobody says penii or vaginae,โ€™ Claire scoffed. โ€˜Itโ€™s penises and vaginas.โ€™

โ€˜Hmm,โ€™ he mused. โ€˜Sounds weird, though.โ€™

โ€˜When it comes to human genitalia, I think it all sounds a little weird, Gerard.โ€™

I zoned out of their conversation, too concerned about Shannon to entertain either of them. Instead, I cranked the stereo and drowned my thoughts out with one of Gibsieโ€™s eclectic mix CDs. I kept my eyes trained on the windscreen, not blinking and barely breathing until we ascended the huge hill and pulled onto her street.

โ€˜Shit,โ€™ Gibsie muttered when we pulled up outside her run-down house in Elkโ€™s Terrace. โ€˜Bad luck, huh?โ€™

โ€˜Yeah, lad,โ€™ I muttered. โ€˜You have no idea.โ€™

โ€˜Turn down the music, Gerard,โ€™ Claire scolded when Gibsie pulled up outside the house.

โ€˜Whatโ€™s wrong with my music?โ€™ Gibsie asked, looking comically wounded.

โ€˜Knockinโ€™ On Heavenโ€™s Door?โ€™ Glaring, Claire slapped his shoulder. โ€˜Really? After what just happened to her?โ€™ Leaning between the seats, she switched off the stereo. โ€˜Thatโ€™s so insensitive.โ€™

โ€˜Butโ€ฆbut sheโ€™s not here?โ€™ Killing the engine, Gibsie turned to look at her. Confusion was etched on his face when he said, โ€˜And itโ€™s Guns Nโ€™ Roses.โ€™

โ€˜Itโ€™s a bad song choice.โ€™

โ€˜Hang on, what about this one โ€“โ€™ His words trailed off as he switched the stereo back on and flicked to track 7. The guitar rift of Thin Lizzyโ€™sย Jailbreakย blasted from the speakers. โ€˜Better?โ€™ Gibsie asked, waggling his brows. โ€˜More suited for the occasion, sweet-pea?โ€™

โ€˜Much,โ€™ Claire replied, tone approving. โ€˜Good job, snuffle-bunny.โ€™

โ€˜Thanks, babe.โ€™

โ€˜Youโ€™re both bleeding ridiculous.โ€™ Shaking my head, I shoved the car door open and used my crutches to pull myself out. โ€˜This is serious.โ€™

โ€˜I know, lad,โ€™ Gibsie replied, joining me on the footpath. โ€˜I know.โ€™

โ€˜So, whatโ€™s the plan?โ€™ Claire asked, climbing out after us. โ€˜Do we justโ€ฆโ€™ She shrugged helplessly. โ€˜Go in there?โ€™

โ€˜Well, Iโ€™m going in there,โ€™ I told her. Not waiting for either of them to respond, I rounded the wall that separated the overgrown garden from the footpath and hopped awkwardly to the door. Tension was emanating from my body in waves as I slipped my hand out of one of my crutches and rapped my knuckles against the door.

โ€˜Keep the head, Cap,โ€™ Gibsie instructed quietly in my ear. Reaching around him, he caught ahold of Claire and shoved her in front of both of us. โ€˜Smile, Claire-Bear,โ€™ he coaxed, keeping his hand on her hip. โ€˜No one could say no to the sun.โ€™

Finally, after what felt like an age, the front door swung inwards and we were greeted by what I could only describe as the male version of Shannon. Dark brown hair, piercing midnight-blue eyes full of secrets. โ€˜Yes?โ€™ he asked politely. โ€˜Can I help you?โ€™

โ€˜Who are you?โ€™ I decided to come right out and ask. I already knew this was Darren, but I wanted him to confirm it.

โ€˜Youโ€™re at my door,โ€™ the man replied. โ€˜Who are you?โ€™

Fighting down the urge to reach over and drag him out of my way, I asked, โ€˜Is Shannon here?โ€™

Darren leaned against the doorframe and folded his arms across his chest. โ€˜Who wants to know?โ€™

โ€˜Me.โ€™

He arched a brow. โ€˜And who is me?โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m her โ€“โ€™

โ€˜Heโ€™s her Johnny,โ€™ Claire blurted out.

โ€˜Nice,โ€™ Gibsie chuckled, tucking her under his arm. โ€˜And since weโ€™re making introductions, sheโ€™s my Claire-Bear and Iโ€™m his Flanker.โ€™

โ€˜I remember you,โ€™ Darren said, giving Claire a curious look. โ€˜Youโ€™ve grown up.โ€™

โ€˜Look, is Shannon here or not?โ€™ I snapped, clinging to my patience by the skin of my teeth. โ€˜I need to see her.โ€™

โ€˜No.โ€™

Goddammit!ย โ€˜Well, can you tell me when sheโ€™ll be back?โ€™ I bit out through clenched teeth. โ€˜So I know how long Iโ€™ll be waiting in my car.โ€™ย Because Iโ€™m not going anywhere, fucker.

โ€˜No.โ€™

Furious, I leaned on my crutch and hissed, โ€˜Where is she, Darren?โ€™

He shook his head and reached for the door. โ€˜Go home, Johnny.โ€™

โ€˜Donโ€™t do it, Cap,โ€™ Gibsie warned, placing his hand on my shoulder. โ€˜Donโ€™t fucking bulldoze.โ€™

I heard him. I did. But I couldnโ€™t see beyond the red-hazed fog in my mind, smothering me, making it hard to think clearly.

โ€˜Nope,โ€™ I growled, shaking off his hand. โ€˜Iโ€™m not going anywhere.โ€™ I shoved a crutch in the doorway to block Darren from slamming the door in my face. โ€˜I know all about your family.โ€™ I glared behind him. โ€˜About the shite that goes on in this house, and if you think Iโ€™m walking away without seeing her, then you have another thing coming!โ€™

โ€˜You donโ€™t have a clue,โ€™ he growled. โ€˜Youย thinkย you do, but you have no goddamn idea!โ€™

โ€˜Johnny, maybe we should just go โ€“โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m going nowhere!โ€™ I roared, feeling furious and sore from standing. โ€˜Iโ€™ll stand right fucking here until he either lets me in or brings her down!โ€™ Straightening, I looked him dead in the eyes and said, โ€˜You decide. Iโ€™m good with either.โ€™

โ€˜Do you have any idea of what my family is dealing with here?โ€™ he demanded then, his cool faรงade slipping. โ€˜What weโ€™re all going through right now? Trying to work through?โ€™ He glared at me before continuing, โ€˜I am holding my family together by the skin of my teeth here, kid. I spent the best part of a week at my sisterโ€™s hospital bedside, trying to manage the shitstorm that Iโ€™ve walked back in to. My family has enough problems right now, issues more complicated than you could ever understand, so I need you to back the fuck up and give us some breathing space.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™ll give you all the space you need,โ€™ I shot back hotly. โ€˜Afterย I see Shannon.โ€™

โ€˜The last thing Shannon needs is you rolling up andย confusingย her,โ€™ he snapped. โ€˜Sheโ€™s been through hell. She needs rest and peace. Iโ€™m trying to give her that. Iโ€™m trying to make her lifeย better, and you storming in and bombarding her with questions is only going to traumatize her even further.โ€™

โ€˜Then Shannon can tell me that herself,โ€™ I countered, unwilling to give an inch. โ€˜To my face.โ€™

Darren shook his head. โ€˜Jesus Christ, Johnny, my mother already explained this to you. I spoke to your father and explained this to him. What arenโ€™t you getting here? Why canโ€™t you understand that whatโ€™s happening in our family is private and we need time to process everything?โ€™

โ€˜What are you so afraid of?โ€™ I taunted. โ€˜That sheโ€™ll talk to me? Confide in me? Tell me all the shite sheย shouldย be telling the authorities butย isnโ€™tย because youโ€™re keeping her locked up like a fucking prisoner?โ€™ I looked him up and down and sneered, โ€˜Yeah, I know thereโ€™s more. I know that fucking much. And I also know that you might be able to control her, but you canโ€™t control me, and I have no problem with blowing the roof off your dirty little secrets. And hereโ€™s another thing you canโ€™t do.โ€™ I straightened my spine. โ€˜You canโ€™t make me leave.โ€™

โ€˜You need to calm down,โ€™ he instructed. โ€˜Stop puffing your chest out and looking for a fight, Johnny. My sisterโ€™s fine and you need to leave.โ€™

โ€˜She was neglected and abused in her own home. She was tortured outside of it. Itโ€™s a fucking miracle sheโ€™s still standing. So no, I wonโ€™t fuckingย calm down!โ€™ I snarled. โ€˜I want to see her and Iโ€™m not going until I do.โ€™

โ€˜If you donโ€™t leave, Iโ€™ll phone the Gardaรญ,โ€™ he replied. โ€˜I donโ€™t want to, but I will if you donโ€™t go.โ€™

โ€˜Then go for it, because Iโ€™m not going anywhere, asshole!โ€™ I roared, losing all touch with my self-control. โ€˜Go right ahead and call the fucking Gards, because quite frankly, Iโ€™d love to speak to them.โ€™

โ€˜Oh Jesus, his motherโ€™s going to kill me,โ€™ Gibsie groaned. โ€˜Itโ€™s bad enough that I took him out behind her back, but now heโ€™s going to be arrested, and then Iโ€™ll be arrested because Iโ€™m a good friend and itโ€™s just bad form to let him go to prison on his own, but she wonโ€™t see it that way. No, sheโ€™ll see her baby in a cell and Iโ€™ll be the dead, ball-less eejit beside him. Ugh!โ€™

โ€˜Shut up, Gibs!โ€™ I barked.

โ€˜Stop the world,โ€™ Gibsie groaned. โ€˜I want to get off.โ€™

โ€˜Gerard, calm down. Nobody is going to prison. Johnny โ€“โ€™ Claire placed a hand on my arm, โ€˜Come on. Letโ€™s just go.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m going nowhere,โ€™ I hissed for the fiftieth fucking time, keeping my eyes locked on Darren. โ€˜Not until I see her.โ€™

โ€˜See?โ€™ Gibsie croaked out. โ€˜You heard him. Heโ€™s going nowhere, and Iโ€™m going to heaven.โ€™

โ€˜What are you hiding?โ€™ I asked, narrowing my eyes.

โ€˜Nothing.โ€™

โ€˜Then why canโ€™t she see me?โ€™ I demanded. โ€˜Why canโ€™t I see her? What is your fucking problem with me โ€“โ€™

My words broke off when a small figure darted out from under Darrenโ€™s arm and sprang towards me. My brain barely had the chance to process that the figure I was seeing was Shannon before she lunged at me, wrapping her arms around my neck and causing me to stagger back a step.

โ€˜Hi, Johnny,โ€™ she whispered, tumbling off the door step as she clung to me. โ€˜You came back.โ€™

โ€˜Hi, Shannon.โ€™ My crutches fell to the ground as I wrapped my arms around her body, holding her in place. โ€˜I promised I would,โ€™ I replied, keeping my eyes narrowed and locked on her brother.
