The sound of metal clanging loudly caused me to jerk out of a fitful sleep. A chair scraping against the tiled floor came next. For a few, uncertain moments I wasnโt sure where I was. A part of me felt like I was back in my kitchen, so I kept my eyes clenched shut and braced myself for the impact. When it came in the form of a hand covering mine, I peeked up and found myself staring into a pair of achingly familiar blue eyes.
โHi, Shannon.โ
Was this real?
Was I imagining this?
The wild, erratic beat of my heart and the heat of his hands on mine assured me that I was very much awake.
Stunned, I looked down to where my hand was taped with wires and wrapped tightly in both of his before returning my gaze to meet his. โHi, Johnny.โ
โWhen did we suddenly switch places?โ Johnny teased. His tone was light but his eyes were dark and stormy. โAre you trying to steal my thunder, Shannonย like the river?โ
I cracked a smile. โI guess I wanted some of those drugs for myself.โ
โStay away from those drugs. Theyโll fuck with your head. โ He gave me a sad smile before looking around. โSo, are you here on your own?โ A deep frown was etched on his face. โAlone?โ
I shook my head. โMy mother is around here somewhere. She might be outside smoking.โ
Johnny leaned forward and opened his mouth to speak, only to stop himself short. Blowing out a breath, he rolled his lips between his teeth and asked, โSo, when are you getting out of here?โ
โMaybe tomorrow,โ I replied with a small smile. โOr the day after.โ
Johnny nodded stiffly and I knew he wanted to say more, but he stopped himself. โIโm not supposed to be here,โ he said then, shifting his gaze back to me. โAt least, I donโt think I am.โ
โIโm glad you are,โ I whispered. Having him here, hearing his voice and seeing his face, settled something deep inside of me. Something shifted into place, an almost relieved sensation fluttered over my skin, soothing something deep inside of me. I felt like I was home. I knew that sounded crazy. It was more than crazy. It was downright insane, but I felt it. It was real, raw, and pushing me to move closer, be closer, keep him.
In this moment, I felt something align itself deep inside of my body, and when it did, the weight I was feeling, the heaviness in my heart and the pressure on my shoulders, just fell away.
โMe, too,โ he replied gruffly.
โSo, when did you get home?โ I asked, feeling hoarse and off-balance.
โThis evening.โ He raised my hand and pressed a kiss to my knuckles. โTook me forever to get back to you.โ
His words caused a shiver to roll through my body.
โIโm glad youโre back to me.โ I knew I was opening myself up to heartache, not to mention the world of pain if he rejected me again, but I had to say it. โI really missed you, Johnny.โ
โChrist, Shannon, I donโt know what to โโ Johnny exhaled a huge breath, and then proceeded to lift my hand to his mouth. โYouโre okay,โ he whispered, pressing a kiss to the back of my hand, wires and all. Inhaling deeply, he placed my hand on his cheek and leaned into the touch. โYouโll be okay, wonโt you?โ
Nodding, I cradled his cheek in my hand and whispered, โAreย youย okay?โ
โDonโt ask me that.โ His blue eyes burned holes inside of me so deep I felt like I could never be repaired as he said, โNot when youโre the one lying in here.โ
โIโm sorry.โ
โDonโt be sorry.โ Clenching his eyes shut, he bowed his head, still clutching my hand to his cheek. โIโm the sorry one.โ He released a pained groan and pushed into my touch, rubbing his cheek against my palm. โI just need you to be okay,โ he croaked out. His lashes were so thick and hooded, I could hardly see the blue hidden beneath them. โI know I was a complete spanner when I came around after the surgery and Iโm sorry. Iโm so fucking sorry for pushing you away. I was just embarrassed and ashamedโฆand I was petrified of scaring you off, but I should have stopped you from leaving. I should haveย handledย myself better. I should have asked you to stay with me.โ Twisting his face, he pressed a kiss to my palm and whispered, โI wanted you to stay with me.โ
My heart skipped a beat. โYou did?โ
โI always want you to stay with me, Shannon,โ he replied, clearly agitated. โAnd if Iโd just manned the fuck up about my feelings and asked you to stay, I could have stopped this from happening โโ
โNo, you couldnโt,โ I interrupted him, trembling. โI would have had to go home at some stage. Staying an extra day or two would have only made things a million times worse.โ
โWorse?โ He clenched his jaw and balked. โShannon, look where you are. How can it get anyย worse?โ
โThings can always get worse, Johnny,โ I whispered.
โSo, he didย thisย to you?โ he came straight out and asked me. โYour Da?โ
I opened my mouth to respond, but Johnny got there first.
โBefore you say anything, I want you to know that Joey called me and told me everything I needed to know,โ he said, staring into my eyes. โNot that I needed him to. I figured it out on my own.โ His hand tightened around mine. โAll those times you came into school black and blue and all fucked up โโ his voice broke off and I watched as a vein in his neck bulged and pulsed. โAll those times you lied to me? It was to protectย him?โ
โI donโt want to talk about it,โ I whispered, falling into my life-long learned pattern of avoidance.
โNo, no, weโre not doing that.โ Johnny stared hard at me, calling me right out on it. โYou donโt get to shut me out, Shannon. You donโt get to do that to me again, because I wonโt go this time. Do you hear me? Iโm here, Iโm in, I care, and Iโm not going the fuck away.โ
My mind was reeling, struggling to make sense of what he was saying. Did he meanโฆ? Was heโฆ? Did he wantโฆ? โYou care?โ
A pained groan tore from his throat. โYeah, I care.โ He leaned closer. โI care so fucking much I can hardly breathe.โ
My breath hitched. โWhat do you want to know?โ
โHow about you start with telling me whatโs wrong with you,โ he suggested, blue eyes glued to mine. โWhatโs the damage?โ
โA few cuts and bruises,โ I admitted. โAnd a collapsed lung.โ
โJesus Christ.โ I watched with my heart in my mouth as Johnnyโs face drained of color before returning with blood-red vengeance. โFuck.โ
Releasing my hand, Johnny leaned back in his chair and pressed the heels of his hands against his forehead, putting space between our bodies and his temper. He didnโt say a word. He just sat there for several moments, breathing deep and hard, obviously wrestling with his emotions.
His dark hair was cocking up in forty different directions and he was sporting several daysโ worth of stubble on his jaw. Unsurprisingly, the disheveled look worked for him. He had on a pair of loose, grey sweatpants and a navy hoodie. The hospital admission band heโd been wearing the last time I saw him was still strapped to his left hand, and a set of metal crutches lay at his feet.
โYou shouldโve told me the truth,โ he finally said. โWhat was happening to you.โ Dropping his hands from his face, he leaned forward and snatched my hand back up. โI could have helped you.โ
โYou couldnโt,โ I breathed. โAnd I couldnโt.โ
โNo?โ His voice was sad, matching his eyes. โWhy not?โ
โBecauseโฆโ My heart was hammering violently against my ribcage. โBecauseโฆโ
โBecause?โ Johnny offered, voice gentle and coaxing as he shifted closer to rest his elbows on the edge of the mattress. โDid you think that I wouldnโt believe you?โ He leaned closer, settling his chin on top of our joined hands. โBecause I would. Every single time.โ
โBecause heโs an alcoholic,โ I squeezed out, feeling suddenly starved of oxygen. โAnd I was trying to keep my family safe.โ
โSafe?โ he continued to probe, luring me into security with his irresistible coaxing, with the promise ofย safety. โFrom him?โ
I shook my head, eyes wide and full of unspoken fear. โThe foster system.โ My heart felt like it had climbed into my throat, making it hard to get the next part out, โBeen there before.โ Releasing a pained exhale, I held onto his hand, taking comfort in the way he made me feel grounded. โDonโt want to go back.โ
โWhen?โ
โWhen I was little.โ I swallowed deeply, feeling the burn. โIt wasnโtโฆgood.โ
Johnny nodded, and the heated interest in his eyes told me that he was committing my words to memory. Everything about this boy was intense and larger than life. He was far too intelligent to insult him with anymore lies or watered-down truths, so I didnโt.
Instead, I went with the truth. โThey donโt want me to talk about it with anyone.โย And especially not with you.
โWhoโs them?โ
โMy mother,โ I told him, feeling uncertain and wary. โAnd Darren.โ
Johnnyโs brows creased in confusion. โDarren, as in the brother who doesnโt live in Cork anymore?โ
I nodded. โHeโs back.โ
His brows shot up. โSince when?โ
โSince this.โ I gestured to myself, feeling embarrassed. โHe says heโs home now, and that heโs going to help Mam with the kids and, ah, and myโฆmy f-father.โ I cringed at the last part โthe father part.
โHe says?โ Johnny narrowed his eyes. See, too intuitive for his own good. โSo, you donโt believe him?โ
โI donโt know what I believe anymore.โ I shrugged wearily, too tired to put up a barrier between us. โA lot of grownups are saying a lot of things, theyโre all talking around me and above me, and Iโm just โโ
โDone with the bullshit?โ he offered, squeezing my hand.
โYes.โ I nodded, grateful for his acute interpretation skills. โIโm so done with the bullshit, Johnny.โ
โWhereโs your father now?โ
I shrugged my shoulders. โI donโt know.โ
โWhat do you mean you donโt know?โ His tone was sharp, even outraged. โHe wasnโt arrested?โ
โHeโs missing โ slipped out after it happened and hasnโt been seen since,โ I whispered, feeling panicky at the thought of my father being out there somewhere. โDarren says he will be found and charged, but Joey isnโt so sure. Nobodyโs telling me anythingโฆwell, except for Joey. Joe reckons that Dadโs probably staying with friends of his in Waterford, keeping his head down until the dust settles and Mam takes himโโ I expelled a defeated breath and mumbled, โback.โ
โBack?โ
Numb, I shrugged. โIโm really not supposed to talk about this with โโ
โItโs me,โ he told me, tipping my chin up with his fingers. Meeting my gaze, he added, โYou can tell me anything, okay?โ
โIโm scared,โ I confessed, biting down on my bottom lip. โAnd I donโt want to go home.โ
โWith your Ma?โ
I nodded stiffly.
โBecause she let you down,โ he said quietly. โBecause you donโt trust her.โ
โShe makes promises but thatโs all they are;ย emptyย promises.โ Shaking, I moved to wrap my arms around myself, only to think better of it and latch on to his warm arm instead. โWeโre supposed to feelย sorryย for her because of what she went through, because sheโs a victim too, and I know that, I truly do, but I justโฆ I canโt find it in me toย feelย that way.โ The usual fear and uncertainty that consumed me whenever I was in his presence was absent now. I felt stripped down to the bone and laid bare to this boy, and he was still here, still looking at me with the same eyes, still wantingย moreย from me. โSheโs getting support now, and the Gardaรญ and Social Services are obviously confident in her ability to parent us โ thatโs why theyโre working with her. Theyโre setting her up with all types of services and counseling.โ
โBut you donโt?โ Johnny asked. โYou donโt think she can?โ
โI know she would never hurt us,โ I whispered. โNot on purpose at least. Sheโs not violent, Johnny, and sheโs not cruel. Sheโs justย weak. Darren keeps saying that we need to have patience and give her a chance, but I justโฆ I canโt get my hopes up.โ Gripping his forearm with both hands, I squeezed. โBecause Iโve seen this all before. Sheโll take him back โ I know she will โ and then what? What happens then, huh?โ Shaking my head, I furiously fought with my emotions, blinking away traitorous tears. โNothing. Nothing will happen just like always, and Iโm just so done with it all, Johnny.โ I exhaled a ragged breath. โI want to get out of this town, go far, far away, andย neverย come back.โ
โCan you tell them?โ he asked. โThat you donโt want to go back with her?โ
โAnd where would I go? What would happen to my little brothers if I did that? Theyย wantย to stay with her.โ
โAre you sure?โ
โOllie and Sean do. I donโt know about Tadhg, heโs not saying much, and Joeyโs over eighteen so he can legally live wherever he wants.โ I sighed in defeat. โIf I push back on this, if I tell them that I donโt feel safe with her, theyโll whip us all into care and weโll be split up.โ My brows furrowed and I cringed before admitting, โI tell lies like I breathe air. Even to myself. Half of the time, I donโt even know whatโs the truth or a lie. I have to actually think long and hard about it because thatโs all Iโve known. Iโve been covering things up for so long that Iโm not even sure ifย Iโmย thinking clearly. And now, Iโm doubting myself because I keep thinking what if Iโm wrong about her? What if Iโm wrong to think badly of her?โ
Johnny was silent for a long time, not making a sound, just being there, being with me, sharing the weight, shouldering the pain with silent support. And I think I loved him more for what heย didnโtย say in that moment. He didnโt make the promises he couldnโt keep. He didnโt offer more than he could give. He justย stayed.
Several minutes passed before he spoke again. โWhen did it start?โ
โI donโt remember a time when it wasnโt like this,โ I admitted, feeling exposed and helpless.
โAnd me?โ Johnny swallowed deeply. โWhen did it start because of me?โ
โHe was always paranoid,โ I told him, deciding I had nothing left to lose. โBut once that picture of us was published in the paper, he had his own version of proof.โ
Johnny dropped his head. โFuck, Shannon, that was months ago.โ
โI know,โ I sighed wearily.
โI made it worse for you,โ he strangled out.
โYou made it bearable,โ I whispered.
โWhere else?โ Two words that seemed to be torn from deep within him. His gaze roamed over me slowly, unabashedly, darkening, until finally settling back on my face. โIs there more?โ His fingers trailed over my cheek. โShow me where he hurt you.โ
I hesitated to respond, feeling cautious and uncertain.
โYou can trust me,โ he said in a voice so low it was barely audible. โIโm not like him, Shannon. I wonโt ever hurt you โ I couldnโt. Not in any shape or form.โ
I knew this.
Aside from Joey, Johnny Kavanagh was the only other person I did trust.
It was with this knowledge that I slowly pulled my aching body into a sitting position.
โTake it easy,โ he coaxed, leaning over to help me sit up. โYou okay?โ
โYeah.โ Letting my legs dangle off the side of the bed, I sat facing him, and reached for the hem of my pajama blouse I had changed into earlier. Gingerly, I lifted the fabric up to reveal the left side of my black and blue ribcage.
Johnny sucked in a sharp breath at the sight. โFucking bastard,โ he snarled and then seemed to check himself because he swallowed down whatever else he was about to say, clenched his jaw, and whispered, โI need to see everything. Show me everything. I need to see it all.โ
So, I did.
I showed him my arms and legs, my neck and thighs, and with every bruise and cut I revealed, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders.
โAnd they made a hole here,โ I explained in a shaky voice, clumsily unbuttoning my pajama blouse to reveal the fresh bandage strapped to my chest and side. Shivering, I cupped my tiny breasts and twisted sideways to show him. โTo help me breathe.โ
Johnnyโs eyes flicked to the bandage and I watched his entire frame stiffen. He wasnโt looking at me in a s*xual way. No, it was a look of pure horror. โJesus Christ.โ He dragged his chair closer to the bed until my legs were nestled between his knees. โIs it sore?โ Resting one hand on my thigh, he gently grazed the bandage with his free hand. โAre you in pain?โ
Yes.ย โIโll be okay,โ I replied, turning back to face him. โThe doctor told me it will heal in a week or two.โ
โHe did this to you because of me โโ pausing, Johnny caught ahold of the fabric on either side of my chest and began to snap the buttons back into place, keeping his eyes on mine the entire time. โBecause of what happened in the changing room?โ When he was finished re-doing my blouse, he shook his head, expression torn. โBecause youโre not supposed to be with me?โ
I shrugged helplessly. I couldnโt lie anymore. Not to him, at least. He saw it anyway, the truth in my eyes, and it caused a low, pained groan to tear from his chest. โIโm so sorry, Shannon.โ Resting his forehead against my stomach, he wrapped his huge arms around my waist and whispered, โIโm so fucking sorry.โ
My body was shaking so hard, I was struggling to hold it all back, to keep my feelings buried down, when all I wanted to do was fold into this boy and never come back up for air. Trembling, I cradled his face to my stomach and exhaled a broken sob. โItโs not your fault,โ I choked out, feeling the sting of hot, salty tears as they trickled down my cheeks. โItโs not. If it wasnโt you, he would have found something else to hate me for. Thatโs the way it is in my family. My father doesnโt need a reason to do the things he does, Johnny. He just needs aย notion.โ Shaking, I trailed my fingers through his hair, forcing myself to keep my touch gentle and not cling to him and beg him to take me away like I so desperately yearned to do. โDonโt be sad for me.โ
โSad? Iโm not sad, Shannon. Iโm fucking devastated,โ he strangled out, lifting his head. โI was positive it was someone at school. Fuck, I was obsessed with figuring this out and I was looking in the wrong direction the entire time.โ
โJohnnyโฆโ
โI drove you back to that house,โ he groaned, distressed. โI watched you walk into that fucking house and I went home to a warm, safe bed, knowing in my heart something wasnโt right but not opening my mind enough to see it!โ Shaking his head, he released a frustrated growl. โI am so fucking sorry. You didnโt deserve to have another person let you down.โ
โItโs okay,โ I croaked out.
โNo, itโs not. Itโsย notย okay.โ He exhaled a heavy sigh and whispered, โShannon, did he โโ Johnny blew out a breath and shook his head before trying again. โDid heโฆโ Flinching, he closed his eyes. โHe hurt you.โ It was a statement, not a question. โPhysically.โ He opened his eyes and looked at me once more. โDid he do anything else to you?โ
โWhat do you mean?โ
โI need to know if heโฆโ his voice was pained as he struggled to get the words out. โDid heโฆ ever make you do things that you didnโt want to do?โ
โLike what?โ I strangled out, panicking.
โDid he ever touch you?โ the words came out of his mouth in a rush. โS*xually.โ He closed his eyes as a pained groan tore through him. โDid he do that to you?โ Opening his eyes, he looked at me, expression torn, and said, โDid he rape you, baby?โ
โNo.โ
โNo?โ Relief flooded his eyes for the briefest of moments before doubt poured back in. โYou canโt lie to me, okay? Not about this. I need you to tell me the truth.โ
โHe didnโt touch me like that,โ I croaked out, heart bucking wildly in my chest. โNothing likeย thatย ever happened to me.โ
Johnny stared hard at me for the longest moment before releasing a shaky breath. โOkay.โ Nodding to himself, he whispered, โOkay,โ several more times as his shoulders sagged. โIโm sorry for asking you that, but Iย hadย to.โ
โItโs okay.โ
โBut I need you to know that youโre not on your own in this. Not anymore.โ His voice was steady and strong now. โYou have me.โ
My heart leapt in my chest. โI have?โ
โAbsolutely.โ His brow touched mine then, achingly soft, and his blue eyes bore into mine, silently asking for permission. To do what, I had no clue, but I was willing to say yes to whatever he asked of me. โIโm here,โ he whispered, stroking my nose with his. โAnd Iโm going nowhere.โ
Oh godโฆ
โJohnny?โ My hands moved of their own accord, knotting in the fabric of his hoodie. โIf youโre going to let me down โโ dropping my head, I closed my eyes and inhaled several shaky breaths before tipping my chin up and opening my eyes, โthen I need you to do it now, okay? Donโt wait until itโs too late, andย pleaseโฆ please donโt make it hurt โโ
Johnny silenced me by putting his lips on mine. Stunned, I could do nothing but sag against him, giving him all of my weight and trusting him not to break me.
It was a soft, innocent, almost featherlike peck on the lips, but it was everything in this moment, and it meantย everythingย to me because it was from him. Because for the very first time he kissed meย first.
โI wonโt,โ Johnny whispered, brows touching, lips gliding against mine as he spoke. โIโll always be careful with you, Shannonย like the river.โ Exhaling a shaky breath, he tucked my hair behind my ears and cupped my face in his hands. โI promise.โ
โIโll be careful with you, too,โ I told him, trembling from head to toe.
He smiled. โThatโs good to know, because Iโve got a feeling you could do some serious damage to my โโ
โIโm not sure where he is now, heย wasย right behind me, but if he could just have a minute with herโฆ never mind,โ a familiar voice said. โIโve found him.โ
โShite,โ Johnny mumbled. Releasing my face, he leaned back in his chair and offered a half-hearted salute with his hand. โHi, Da.โ
โGlad to see that youโre listening ears are as absent as always, son,โ Mr. Kavanagh replied in a mild tone. โShannon.โ He gave me a sad smile. โItโs lovely to see you again, although the circumstances arenโt ideal.โ
โHi, Mr. Kavanagh,โ I whispered, feeling my walls rise up at a rapid pace. I wasnโt sure if it was the sight of Johnnyโs mild-mannered father that caused this reaction or the furious look on my motherโs face as she stood in the doorway beside him.
โWell,โ Mam strangled out, clearly upset. โI think heโs had more than a minute.โ
โMam โโ I began to protest, but Mr. Kavanagh interrupted me.
โUnderstood.โ He looked at Johnny and inclined his head. โLetโs go, son.โ
โWhat?โ I stared in horror at my mother. โWhy?โ
โBecause I said so,โ Mam replied, tone shaky.
โNo.โ I shook my head and looked to Johnny. โNo, you donโt have to go anywhere.โ
โYes, he does, Shannon,โ Mr. Kavanagh interjected. โCome on, Johnny.โ
Johnny looked how I felt, completely torn, as he looked from his father to me. Several long moments passed in tense silence before Johnny finally nodded in defeat. My heart sank as I watched him retrieve his crutches and climb unsteadily to his feet. โIโll be back, Shannon.โ
โI would prefer it if you didnโt,โ Mam was quick to say. โCome back, that is. At least for a while. Weโre going through a deeply personal issue, itโs a family matter, and I really donโt feel like itโs appropriate for you to be here.โ
My jaw fell open. โMam!โ
โOh no?โ Johnny shot back, not masking the anger in his voice. โWell, I wouldย preferย if you shoved yourย feelingsย up the highest part of your โโ
โJonathon!โ Mr. Kavanagh barked. โTime toย go.โ
โYouโve done enough damage to this family already,โ Mam snapped, trembling. โWhether you realize it or not, so donโt show your face around here again. Youโre not welcome.โ
โMrs. Lynch,โ Mr. Kavanagh interjected calmly. โI think we all need to calm downโโ
โKeep your son away from my daughter,โ Mam snapped. โSheโs sixteen years old and I donโt want her messing around with him. Sheโs in here because of him! Because he wouldnโt stay away. So,ย keep him away. Do you understand me? Keep that boyย awayย from my daughter!โ
โWhat are youย talkingย about?โ I strangled out, feeling my heart gallop to the point where I felt dizzy. โHe hasnโt done anything wrong.โ
โIโm coming back to see your daughter,โ Johnny growled, eyes locked on my mother. โI played by your rules once before and look where it got her. So, you can rest assured that I wonโt be doing that again.โ
โJohnny, letโs go,โ Mr. Kavanagh barked. โNow.โ
โJesus Christ, Da!โ
โNow!โ
Tearing his heated gaze off my mother, Johnny turned to look at me. Ignoring our parents, he closed the space between us, cupped the back of my head with one hand and leaned down. โIโll be back,โ he whispered before pressing a lingering kiss to my forehead. Straightening up, he looked down at me and winked. โI promise.โ
Wide-eyed, I stared up at him and whispered, โIโll be waiting.โ
Johnny turned back to my mother and hissed, โIโm watching you.โ
โCome on.โ Mr. Kavanagh sighed wearily and placed a hand on the back of Johnnyโs neck. โGet out of the room before I take your crutch and beat you with it.โ
โNice choice of words, Da,โ Johnny groaned, allowing his father to lead him out of the room. โReal fucking tactful.โ
โOh Jesus,โ Mr. Kavanagh muttered, turning in the doorway. His face was a deep shade of red as he said, โMy sincerest apologies for the tasteless remark,โ before closing the door behind them.
โWhat wasย that?โ Mam asked, tone accusing, eyes narrowed on me.
โThat was Johnny,โ I replied, daring her back with my eyes. โWhat wasย that?โ I asked her right back. โWhat the hell, Mam? He came to see me and you ran him off.โ
โHe had no business being here.โ
โWhat?โ I gaped at her. โHeโs myย friend!โ
โAnd is yourย friendย planning on making a habit of kissing you?โ she demanded. โIn front of your mother?โ
God, I hoped so.ย I shrugged noncommittally.
โHeโs too old for you.โ
โHeโs seventeen,โ I shot back defiantly. โIโm sixteen.โ
โI donโt like this, Shannon,โ she muttered, looking concerned. โHim. I donโt likeย him. Thereโs something about him. Heโs tooโฆheโs tooโฆโ
โHeโs too what, Mam?โ
โMuch for you,โ she filled in. โHeโs too old and too experienced and definitely too arrogant.โ
โWell, heโs not your choice,โ I told her. โHeโs mine.โ
โDoes he know?โ Mam whispered, eyeing me with extreme wariness. โAbout our family?โ
โHe knows everything,โ I confirmed quietly, feeling a tsunami of misplaced guilt rise up in me. Logic told me I didnโt need to feel bad, but my heart was confused. My heart called me a traitor. โI had to tell him,โ I choked out, explaining myself. โHe saw the marks.โ
โJesus, Shannon,โ Mam strangled out. โNo.โ She shook her head. โNo, no, no, this isnโt right.โ
โLook where I am.โ My cheeks burned. โI couldnโt keep lying to him.โ
โNot that!โ Mam snapped. โI mean you and him.โ She shook her head again. โNo, youโre vulnerable and heโs taking advantage of a bad situation.โ
โWhat?โ I gaped at her. โI canโt believe you just said that.โ
โAre you sleeping with him?โ
โWhat?โ
โAre you having s*x with that boy?โ
โOh my god! Youโre so unbelievably disconnected.โ I bit back a scream. โDarren was right. You needย help.โ
โHeย hurtย you, Shannon,โ Mam choked out. โHe knocked you out โ put you in the hospital.โ
โAccidentally,โ I spat. โUnlike the man who you left in our lives, who likes to hurt us onย purpose.โ I gestured wildly to myself. โIโm in the hospital again, Mam. Are you going to blame this on Johnny, too?โ
Mam flinched. โIf he had left you alone in the first place then your father wouldnโt have had a reason to โโ
โDonโt!โ I warned, voice cracking. โDonโt you dare blame me for what he did to me.โ
โIโm not,โ she sobbed, crying again. โIโm sorryโฆIโm justย terrifiedย for you.โ Hurrying towards me, she sank down on the bed beside me. โYour father knows about him. What if he tries to find you through him? What if he sees you with him and it makes things worse?โ
โHe already knows where we live, Mam,โ I said with a weary sigh. โIf Dad wants to get me, he will.โ
โShannonโฆโ Mam sobbed loudly. โDonโt say that.โ
โItโs the truth,โ I replied, feeling emotionally drained. โIf he wants to hurt us, he doesnโt need to go through my friends to do it. All he has to do is knock on the door and youโll welcome him in with open arms.โ
โNo,โ she sniffled. โI wonโt do that again.โ
โWeโll see.โ
โI knew this would happen,โ she whispered, reaching for my hand.
โYou knew what would happen?โ I asked, snatching my hand away.
โI saw the way he looked at you that day. At the school when I came to pick you up?โ She exhaled a broken sob. โI knew he was going to be trouble.โ
โHeโs not trouble,โ I urged. โHeโs a good person, Mam โ a great one. Heโs training to be a professional rugby player, for godโs sake. He already plays for hisย country. Heโs smart and driven and kind. Heโs so kind, Mam. He doesnโt take drugs or mess around like everyone else his age. Heโs not the monster youโve invented in your head.โ
โDo you think I donโt know what itโs like; to turn the head of a boy like that?โ she asked. โYour father was all of those things. He wasnโt a bad man when I first knew him. He was wonderful. He was a star in his own right with the hurling. Everyone wanted to know him. He was adored, you know. Ballylagginโs golden boy.โ
โItโs not the same thing,โ I strangled out, feeling my body grow hot and panicky. โNone ofย thisย is the same.โ
โItโsย allย the same,โ she shot back brokenly. โAnd look at me now, Shannon.โ She waved a hand aimlessly around the room. โLook where boys like that get girls like us. One mistake is all it takes. One slip up and your life is over. Youโll be saddled down with more responsibility than you can cope with and heโll blame you for everything. Heโll blame you for taking his future from him. For changing the course of his life. For making him a father when heโs still a boy. Repeat my mistakes, Shannon, and that boy will blame you and resent you and break you until thereโs nothing of you left to hurt.โ
โIโm not you,โ I choked out. โAnd heโs not Dad.โ
โYet,โ she replied sadly. โNot yet.โ
โStop talking.โ
Mam balked. โWh-what?โ
โYou donโt get to do this to me,โ I said, shaking. โYou donโt get to scare me away from the oneย goodย thing in my life.โ
โIโm not trying to scare you, Shannon. Iโm trying to help you,โ she pleaded. โTrying toย protectย you.โ
โYeah, from the wrong person.โ
โNo.โ She shook her head. โFrom making the same mistakes as me.โ
โWell, you asked me earlier if there was a chance Iโd ever forgive you?โ Swallowing deeply, I clutched the edge of the mattress, looked my mother dead in the eyes, and whispered, โDrive him away and the answer will beย never again.โ
