Chapter no 44

The Deal (Off-Campus, #1)

Garrett

Iโ€™M GRINNING LIKEย the town idiot. And now isย notย the time to be grinning like the town idiot, not when Iโ€™m buck naked in a room full of showering dudes and my girlfriend is glaring daggers at me. But Iโ€™m so happy to see her that I canโ€™t control my facial muscles.

My eyes eat up the sight of her. Her gorgeous face. Dark hair pulled back in a ponytail with a pink hair thingie. Infuriated green eyes.

Sheโ€™s so damn hot when sheโ€™s mad at me.

โ€œItโ€™s nice to see you too, baby,โ€ I answer cheerfully. โ€œHow was your break?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t youย babyย me. And donโ€™t ask about my break because you donโ€™tย deserveย to know about it!โ€ Hannah glowers at me, then shifts her attention to the three hockey players in the neighboring stalls. โ€œFor the love of Pete, would you guys just rinse off and skedaddle already? Iโ€™m trying to yell at your captain.โ€

I choke back a laugh, which ends up spilling out when my teammates snap to attention like theyโ€™ve been issued a command by a drill sergeant. Showers turn off and towels come out, and a moment later, Hannah and I are alone.

I shut off the faucet and turn around. The shower door does a good job of hiding my downstairs area, but all Hannah has to do is peek over and sheโ€™ll get an eyeful of my quickly hardening dick, who is unbelievably happy to see her.

But she doesnโ€™t sneak a peek. She simply keeps glaring at me. โ€œYou invoked a campus-wide hands-off law? Are youย kiddingย me?โ€

Iโ€™m not at all remorseful as I meet her eyes. โ€œOf course I did.โ€

โ€œOh my God. You are unbelievable.โ€ She shakes her head in disbelief. โ€œWhoย doesย that, Garrett? You canโ€™t just go around and tell all the guys at this school that theyโ€™re not allowed to touch me or youโ€™ll kick their asses!โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t tellย allย the guys. Do I look like I have that kind of time?โ€ I flash a grin. โ€œI told a few key people and made sure they spread the word.โ€

โ€œWhat, if you canโ€™t have me no one else can?โ€ she says darkly.

I snicker. โ€œWell, thatโ€™s just insane. Iโ€™m not a psycho, babe. I was doing it for your sake.โ€

Her jaw drops. โ€œHow the hell do you figureย that?โ€

โ€œBecause youโ€™re in love with me, and you donโ€™t want to date anyone else. But see, I was afraid your stubborn self would try to do it just to back up your cover story, so I had to take some preventative measures.โ€ I prop my forearms on the stall door. โ€œI knew if you went out with anyone else youโ€™d end up regretting it, and then youโ€™d feel like an ass when you finally came to your senses, and, well, I wanted to spare you all that pain and suffering. Youโ€™re welcome.โ€

She looks stunned for a moment. Then she starts to laugh.

Jesus, Iโ€™ve missed the sound of her laughter. Iโ€™m tempted to hop over the little door and kiss the crap out of her, but I donโ€™t get the chance.

โ€œWhat theย hellย is going on in here?โ€

Hannah jumps in surprise when Coach Jensen appears in the shower area.

โ€œOh, hey, Coach,โ€ I call out. โ€œNot what it looks like.โ€

His dark brows knit in a displeased frown. โ€œIt looks like youโ€™re taking a shower in front of your girlfriend. In my locker room.โ€

โ€œOkay, then yeah, itโ€™s what it looks like. But I promise, itโ€™s all very PG. Well, except for the fact that Iโ€™m naked. But donโ€™t worry, no kinky shit is going to happen.โ€ I grin at him. โ€œIโ€™m trying to win her back.โ€

Coachโ€™s mouth opens, then closes, then opens again. I canโ€™t tell if heโ€™s amused or pissed or ready to wash his hands of this whole thing. Finally, he nods and opts for option number three. โ€œCarry on.โ€

Coach shakes his head to himself as he ambles off, and I turn back to Hannah in time to see her trying to sneak away.

โ€œOh, hell no,โ€ I announce. โ€œNo way, Wellsy.โ€ I snatch my towel and wrap it around my waist as I stumble out of the stall. โ€œYouโ€™re not running off on me.โ€

โ€œI came here to yell at you,โ€ she stammers, her gaze dipping to her feet. โ€œAnd now Iโ€™m done yelling at you, soโ€ฆโ€

She yelps when my wet hands cup her cheeks to force her to look at me. โ€œGreat, youโ€™re done yelling. Now I want you toย talkย to me, and youโ€™re not leaving until you do.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want to talk.โ€

โ€œTough cookies.โ€ I search her agonized expression. โ€œWhy did you break up with me?โ€

โ€œI already told youโ€”โ€

โ€œI know what you told me. I didnโ€™t believe you then and I donโ€™t believe you now.โ€ I set my jaw. โ€œWhy did you break up with me?โ€

A shaky breath leaves her mouth. โ€œBecause we were moving too fast.โ€ โ€œBullshit. Why did you break up with me?โ€

โ€œBecause I wanted to see other people.โ€

โ€œTry again. Why did you break up with me?โ€

When she doesnโ€™t answer, frustration blasts through me, and I react by crashing my mouth down on hers. I kiss her roughly, desperately, the days and weeks of missing her catching up to me and pouring out in the form of deep, hungry kisses that leave us both breathless. She doesnโ€™t pull away. She just kisses me back with the same unchecked passion, her hands clinging to my wet shoulders like sheโ€™s lost at sea and Iโ€™m her life preserver.

Thatโ€™s how I know she still loves me. Thatโ€™s how I know she missed me as much as I missed her. And thatโ€™s why I wrench my mouth away and whisper, โ€œWhy did you break up with me?โ€

Her anguished gaze locks with mine. Her bottom lip quivers, and as several seconds tick by, I wonder if sheโ€™s going to answer me. I wonder ifโ€”

โ€œBecause your father told me to.โ€

The shock almost knocks me off my feet. As my equilibrium turns into a seesaw, I drop my hands to my sides and stare at her, unable to comprehend what I just heard.

I swallow. Then I swallow again. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œYour father told me to end it,โ€ she admits. โ€œHe said that if I didnโ€™t, heโ€™dโ€”โ€

I hold up my hand to silence her. Iโ€™m too stunned to listen. Too enraged to move. I force myself to breathe. Long, calming breaths that help steady my wonky balance and clear my foggy head. Then I exhale in a slow rush and run a hand through my damp hair.

โ€œHereโ€™s whatโ€™s going to happen,โ€ I say quietly. โ€œYouโ€™re going to wait outside for me while I get dressed, and then you and I are going toโ€”I donโ€™t care where we go. Your dorm, my car,ย anywhere.ย Weโ€™re going to go somewhere, and youโ€™re going to tell me every word that son of a bitch said to you.โ€ I take another breath. โ€œYouโ€™re going to tell meย everything.โ€

Hannah

GARRETT DOESNโ€™T SAYย a word as I recount everything that happened between his father and me. Weโ€™re in my room because the arena is closer to the dorms than it is to Garrettโ€™s house, and he was in too much of a hurry to have this conversation. But all heโ€™s done so far is loom over me with his arms crossed and his brow furrowed, listening intently as my confession spills out of my mouth like confetti.

I canโ€™t stop talking. I recite his dadโ€™s threats verbatim. I explain why I went along with them. I beg him to understand that I did it because I love him and want him to be successful.

And through it all, Garrett says nothing. He doesnโ€™t even blink.

โ€œWill you please say something?โ€ I mumble when Iโ€™ve finished talking and he still hasnโ€™t said a word.

His gray eyes fix on my face. I canโ€™t tell if heโ€™s angry or annoyed, if heโ€™s disappointed or upset. All those emotions would make sense to me.

But the response I get? Makes no sense at all.

Garrett starts to laugh. Deep, husky rumbles that bring a frown to my lips. His brow relaxes and his arms fall to his sides as he sinks down on the bed beside me, his broad shoulders trembling with mirth.

โ€œYou think this is funny?โ€ I demand, genuinely offended. Iโ€™ve been a total misery zombie this past month, and he finds itย amusing?

โ€œNo, I think itโ€™s a damn shame,โ€ he says between chuckles. โ€œWhatโ€™s a shame?โ€

โ€œThis.โ€ He gestures between us. โ€œYou and me. The whole fucking month we missed out on.โ€ He lets out a heavy sigh. โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you just

tellย me?โ€

My throat closes up. โ€œBecause I knew what you would say.โ€

Another chuckle pops out of his mouth. โ€œI highly doubt that, but okay, humor me. What would I have said?โ€

I donโ€™t understand his weird-ass reaction, and itโ€™s making me uneasy. โ€œYou would have told me that you didnโ€™t care if your father cut you off, because youโ€™re not going to let him control you, orย us.โ€

Garrett nods. โ€œYup, youโ€™re on track so far. What else?โ€

โ€œThen you would have said you care about me more than you care about his stupid money.โ€

โ€œYup.โ€

โ€œAnd you would have let him cut you off.โ€ โ€œRight again.โ€

My stomach lurches. โ€œHe said you arenโ€™t eligible for financial aid, and that you wouldnโ€™t be able to get a bank loan.โ€

Garrett nods again. โ€œBoth true.โ€

โ€œYou would have had to clean out your savings account to pay for next termโ€™s tuition, andโ€ฆand then what? We both know you canโ€™t afford rent and expenses and car payments when youโ€™re not working, so that means you would need to get a job andโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™m gonna stop you there, baby.โ€ The smile he gives me is infinitely tender. โ€œSoโ€ฆletโ€™s back up. I let my father cut me off. Ask me what I wouldโ€™ve said next.โ€

I bite the inside of my cheek. A little too hard, so I soothe the sting with my tongue. โ€œWhat?โ€

Garrett leans closer and sweeps his fingertips over my cheek. โ€œI wouldโ€™ve said,ย Donโ€™t worry, babe, Iโ€™m turning twenty-one in a few weeks, and my grandparents left me a trust fund that I can access on January 2nd.โ€

I suck in a shocked breath. โ€œWaitโ€”what?โ€

He lightly pinches my bottom lip, shaking his head in frustration. โ€œMy grandparents left me an inheritance, Hannah. My dad didnโ€™t know about it because my mom signed all the papers behind his back. Gran and Gramps hated the old bastardโ€”they really fucking hated himโ€”and they saw how controlling he was when it came to me and hockey. They were afraid he might try to access the trust and do whatever he wanted with the funds, so they made sure I was taken care of. They left me enough money to pay my

father back for everything heโ€™s ever paid for. Enough to pay for the rest of my education, and all my expenses, and probably enough to sustain me for a few years once I graduate.โ€

My mind reels. Iโ€™m having trouble processing the information. โ€œReally?โ€

โ€œReally,โ€ he confirms.

As the significance of what heโ€™s just told me sinks in, I experience a flood of pure horror. Sweet baby Jesus. Is he telling me I broke up with him forย no reason?

Garrett sees my expression and chuckles. โ€œI bet you feel pretty stupid, huh?โ€

My mouth falls open, but I canโ€™t formulate any words. I canโ€™t believeโ€ฆ Iโ€™m soโ€ฆ God, heโ€™s right. Iโ€™m so fucking stupid.

โ€œI was trying to do the right thing.โ€ I moan miserably. โ€œI know how important hockey is to you. I didnโ€™t want you to lose that.โ€

He sighs again. โ€œI know, and trust me, thatโ€™s the only reason Iโ€™m not pissed off at you right now. I mean, Iโ€™m annoyed to shit that you didnโ€™t just talk to me about it, but I understand why you didnโ€™t.โ€ His eyes flash. โ€œThat asshole had no right to do that. I swear, Iโ€™m going toโ€”โ€ He stops and puffs out a breath. โ€œActually, Iโ€™m going to do absolutely nothing. Not worth my time and energy, remember?โ€

โ€œDoes he know about the trust fund now?โ€

A triumphant gleam enters his eyes. โ€œOh, he knows. My grandparentsโ€™ executor couriered him a check yesterday. I estimated what I owed him and threw some extra cash on top of it, and he called last night and yelled at me for about twenty minutes before I hung up on him.โ€ Garrettโ€™s tone goes serious. โ€œOh, and thereโ€™s something else you should knowโ€”Cindy dumped his ass.โ€

Shock and relief war inside me. โ€œReally?โ€

โ€œYup. Apparently she packed her bags a week after Thanksgiving and never looked back. That was another reason he was so pissed off on the phone. He thinks we said something to make her leave.โ€ Garrettโ€™s cheeks hollow in anger. โ€œSon of a bitch still canโ€™t take responsibility for anything he does. He canโ€™t fathom how it might beย hisย fault that she left.โ€

My head continues to spin. Iโ€™m happy Cindy extricated herself from that abusive relationship, but Iโ€™m not happy about the month Garrett and I were

apart. Iโ€™m not happy that I allowed Phil Graham to scare me into giving up the guy I love.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ I say softly. โ€œIโ€™m so sorry, Garrett. For everything.โ€ He reaches for my hand. โ€œYeah, me too.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you dare apologize. You have nothing to be sorry about.ย Iโ€™mย the one who tried to be all heroic and broke up with you for your own good.โ€ I groan. โ€œGod, I canโ€™t even be selfless without screwing it up.โ€

He snickers. โ€œItโ€™s okay. At least youโ€™re hot. And donโ€™t get me started on your stripper tits.โ€

I squeak when he suddenly cups my breasts over my sweater and gives them a hearty squeeze.

He makes a contented little noise as he rubs his palms over my quickly hardening nipples. โ€œOh, Iโ€™ve missed these. You donโ€™t know how fucking much.โ€

A laugh flies out. โ€œSeriously? Youโ€™re going straight to second base when we havenโ€™t even officially gotten back together?โ€

His lips latch onto my neck, and his tongue darts out for a teasing lick. โ€œAs far as Iโ€™m concerned, we were never broken up.โ€ Then he nibbles on my earlobe, eliciting a flurry of shivers. โ€œSo the way I see it, we could hug and kiss and cry, which will take about, what, twenty minutes? And then twenty more minutes where I forgive you and you vow your undying love to me. Maybe ten minutes of you giving me head to make up for all the time weโ€™ve lostโ€”โ€

I punch him in the arm.

โ€œBut whatโ€™s the point of wasting more time when we can get right to the good part?โ€

My lips quiver in amusement. โ€œAnd what exactly is the good part?โ€

Before I can blink, Iโ€™m on my back with the deliciously heavy weight of Garrettโ€™s body on top of me. He flashes his trademark grin, that s*xy crooked smile that never fails to make my heart pound, and then his mouth covers mine in a hungry kiss.

โ€œThisโ€”โ€ He sucks on my lower lip and rotates his hips seductively โ€œโ€” is the good part.โ€

I wrap my arms around him and hold him tight against me, and itโ€™s so familiar, so wonderfully perfect, that the love in my heart overflows and stings my eyes. โ€œI love you, Garrett,โ€ I choke out.

His husky voice tickles my lips. โ€œI love you, Hannah.โ€

Then he kisses me, and everything in my world is right again.
