Chapter no 26

The Deal (Off-Campus, #1)

Hannah

โ€œSTOP RIGHT THERE!โ€ a sharp voice booms as I hurry toward my bedroom. โ€œWhere do you think youโ€™re going, young lady?โ€

I spin around, startled to find Allie lying on the couch in our common area, balancing one of her icky juice cups on her knee. In my haste, I hadnโ€™t even noticed her.

โ€œWhat are you doing home?โ€ I ask in surprise. โ€œI thought you have econ on Wednesdays.โ€

โ€œIt got cancelled because the prof has Ebola.โ€ I gasp. โ€œHoly shit! Are you serious?โ€

She snickers. โ€œWell, no. I mean, maybe. He sent out an email saying heโ€™s come down with anย illnessโ€”โ€ she uses air quotes โ€œโ€”but he didnโ€™t say what the illness was. I like to imagine itโ€™s something bad, though. Because then he wonโ€™t be able to teach for the rest of the term and weโ€™ll all get automatic Aโ€™s.โ€

โ€œYou are an evil person,โ€ I inform her. โ€œAnd one day that voodoo black magic of yours is going to come back to haunt you. Seriously, donโ€™t come crawling to me when you get Ebola. Anyway, I have to go. I just popped in to drop off my stuff before I head to rehearsal.โ€

โ€œNo way, Han-Han. Youโ€™re going to sit your pretty butt down on this couch, because we need to have a little chat.โ€

โ€œI really canโ€™t be late for rehearsal.โ€

โ€œHow many times hasย Cassย been late for rehearsal?โ€ she challenges. Good point.

With a sigh, I walk over to the couch and flop down. โ€œOkay. Whatโ€™s up?

And make it snappy.โ€

โ€œFine, you want snappy? Howโ€™s thisโ€”what on Godโ€™s green planet is going on with you and Garrett?โ€

My mouth snaps closed. Crap. Busted. I mean, Iย hadย texted her last night saying โ€œover at Garrettโ€™sโ€”be home lateโ€ย but Allie lives in her own Sean-centered bubble for so much of the time that Iโ€™d been hoping she wouldnโ€™t bring up the subject.

โ€œNothingโ€™s going on,โ€ I answer.

Ha, if by โ€œnothingโ€ I mean โ€œI went over to his house and we both got naked and masturbated in front of each other and then I had an orgasm andย heย had an orgasm and it was the best feelingย ever.โ€

Allie sees right through my feeble attempt at lying. โ€œIโ€™m going to ask you this one time, and one time onlyโ€”Hannah Julie Wells, are you dating Garrett Graham?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

She narrows her eyes. โ€œFine. Iโ€™m going to ask you twice. Are you dating

โ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not dating him.โ€ I sigh. โ€œBut we are fooling around.โ€

Her jaw falls open. A second ticks by, then another, and then her blue

eyes light up in victory. โ€œHa! Iย knewย you were into him! Oh my God! Hold my juiceโ€”I think I need to break out in a happy dance! Do you know how to do the running man? If so, can you teach meย right now?โ€

I laugh. โ€œOh God, please donโ€™t do a happy dance. And itโ€™s not a big deal, okay? Itโ€™ll probably fizzle out soon.โ€

Yeah, when I go out with Justin.

And double crapโ€”this is the first time since Deanโ€™s birthday that Justin has even crossed my mind. Iโ€™ve been entirely focused on Garrett, on the way he turns me on, the things I want to do with him. But now that Iโ€™m reminded of my impending date, I experience a sharp tug of guilt.

Can I really go out with someone else after what Garrett and I did last night?

Butโ€ฆ Itโ€™s not like Iโ€™m dating Garrett. Heโ€™s not my boyfriend, and thereโ€™s no way he considers me his girlfriend, soโ€ฆwhy not?

Still, the urge to cancel on Justin refuses to go away, but I push it aside as Allie continues to gush about the awesomeness of this hookup.

โ€œDid you sleep with him? Oh, please say yes! And please say that it was good! I know you and Devon didnโ€™t have Brangelina-level chemistry in the sack, but from what Iโ€™ve heard, Garrett Graham has some serious moves.โ€

Yep. He certainly does.

โ€œI didnโ€™t sleep with him.โ€

She looks disappointed. โ€œWhy not?โ€

โ€œBecauseโ€ฆI donโ€™t know, because it didnโ€™t happen. We did other stuff.โ€ My face burns hotter. โ€œAnd thatโ€™s all Iโ€™m saying about the subject, okay?โ€

โ€œNot okay. BFFs are supposed to tell each other everything. I mean,ย youย know everything about my s*x life. You know about the time Sean and I tried anal, and you know how big Seanโ€™s dick isโ€”โ€

โ€œWhich is above and beyond TMI,โ€ I interject. โ€œI love you to death, but I never, ever wanted to know about the butt s*x, and I definitely couldโ€™ve lived without you bringing out a ruler and demonstrating the size of your boyfriendโ€™s penis!โ€

Allie pouts. โ€œYouโ€™re the worst. But donโ€™t worry, Iโ€™ll get all the dirty details eventually. Iโ€™m very good at prying out details.โ€

Itโ€™s true. She is. But sheโ€™s not getting a single one right now.

Rolling my eyes, I stand up. โ€œAll right, are we done here? Because I really need to go.โ€

โ€œFine, go. And no, we are not done.โ€ She grins at me. โ€œWe wonโ€™t be done until you bust out that ruler and put an end to the age old question,ย how big is Garrett Grahamโ€™sโ€”โ€

โ€œGoodbye, perv.โ€

THE FIRST THINGย I see when I walk into the choir room fifteen minutes later is a cellist.

Question: How do you know when things have spiraled out of your control?

Answer: When you find a cellist in your rehearsal space and donโ€™t even bat an eye.

Ever since MJ endorsed Cassโ€™s choir idea, Iโ€™ve given up on arguing with either one of them. At this point, they can do whatever the hell they wantโ€” AKA whatever the hellย Cassย wantsโ€”because I simply donโ€™t have the mental energy to play his game.

โ€œYouโ€™re late.โ€ Cass tsks with disapproval as I unzip my coat. โ€œI know.โ€

He waits for me to apologize. I donโ€™t apologize.

โ€œHannah, this is Kim Jae Woo,โ€ MJ says with a hesitant smile. โ€œHeโ€™s going to be accompanying you guys during the second verse.โ€

Uh-huh. Of course he is.

I donโ€™t bother asking when this decision was made. I just nod and mutter, โ€œSounds good.โ€

For the next hour, we concentrate only on the middle section of the song. Normally Cass would be stopping us every two seconds to criticize something Iโ€™ve done, but today the brunt of his criticism lands on poor Kim Jae Woo. The Korean freshman shoots me a panicked look every time Cass bitches at him, but all I can do is offer a shrug and a sympathetic smile.

Itโ€™s sad. Iโ€™ve lost all enthusiasm for this song. The only thing that brings me comfort now is the knowledge that if we donโ€™t win the scholarship thanks to Cassโ€™s theatrics, Iโ€™ll get a second chance in April during the spring showcase.

At two oโ€™clock, Cass calls an end to rehearsal, and I breathe a sigh of relief as I pull on my coat. When I step into the hall, Iโ€™m startled to find Garrett standing there. Heโ€™s wearing his Briar jacket and holding two coffee cups, and he greets me with a crooked smile that makes my pulse race.

โ€œHey!โ€ I wrinkle my forehead. โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€

โ€œI stopped by your room, but Allie said you were rehearsing, so I figured Iโ€™d come by and wait until you were done.โ€

โ€œYou were standing out here the whole time?โ€

โ€œNaah, I grabbed some coffee and wandered around for a bit. Just got back now.โ€ He glances past my shoulder into the music room. โ€œIs rehearsal over?โ€

โ€œYep.โ€ I take the cup he hands me and pop the plastic lid. โ€œWe have a cellist now.โ€

Garrettโ€™s lips twitch. โ€œMmm-hmmm. And I bet youโ€™re positivelyย thrilled

about that.โ€

โ€œMore like indifferent.โ€

A sharp voice snaps from behind me. โ€œYouโ€™re blocking the door, Hannah. Some people have somewhere to be.โ€

Rolling my eyes, I move away from the doorway and allow Cass and Mary Jane to exit. Cass doesnโ€™t spare so much as a look at me, but when he notices who Iโ€™m talking to, his blue eyes fly in my direction.

โ€œCass, have you met Garrett?โ€ I ask politely.

He warily turns back to the tall, strapping hockey player at my side. โ€œNaah, I havenโ€™t. Nice to meet you, man.โ€

โ€œYou too, Chazz.โ€

My duet partner stiffens. โ€œItโ€™s Cass.โ€

Garrett blinks innocently. โ€œOh, sorryโ€”wasnโ€™t that what I said?โ€ Cassโ€™s nostrils flare.

โ€œSo I hear youโ€™re singing a duet with my girl,โ€ Garrett adds. โ€œI hope youโ€™re not giving her any trouble. Iโ€™m not sure you know this, but my Han- Han has a bad habit of letting people walk all over her.โ€ He arches one dark brow. โ€œBut you wouldnโ€™t do that, right, Chazz?โ€

Despite the pang of embarrassment his words evoke in me, Iโ€™m also fighting hard not to laugh.

โ€œItโ€™s. Cass.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s what I said, no?โ€

Thereโ€™s one long moment of very obvious macho posturing as the two guys stare each other down. As I expect, Cass is first to break the eye contact.

โ€œWhatever,โ€ he mutters. โ€œCome on, MJ, weโ€™re gonna be late.โ€

As he drags the sweet blond girl away like a piece of luggage, I turn to Garrett with a sigh. โ€œWas that necessary?โ€

โ€œFuck yeah it was.โ€ โ€œOkay. Just checking.โ€

Our eyes lock, and a burst of heat goes off inside me. Oh boy. I know exactly what heโ€™s thinking right now. Or rather, what heโ€™s thinking aboutย doing.

Me.

Iโ€™m thinking the same damn thing.

I might have told Allie that this thing between us would fizzle out, but at the moment, itโ€™s blazing even hotter than it did last night.

โ€œMy place?โ€ he murmurs.

Those two words, low and husky, make my thighs clench so hard Iโ€™m surprised I donโ€™t pull a muscle.

Rather than answerโ€”my throat has clogged with desireโ€”I take the coffee from his hand and proceed to dump both our cups in the trashcan behind him.

Garrett chuckles. โ€œIโ€™ll take that as a yes.โ€
