Chapter no 19 – SHANE

The Dixon Rule (Campus Diaries Book 2)

Trial boyfriend

โ€œI donโ€™t want to get married anymore.โ€

The glum statement comes from Ryder, who sits on the other end of the couch, stone faced.

I do my best not to laugh at him. โ€œHate to break it to you, bro, but youโ€™re already married.โ€

Itโ€™s Friday night, and Iโ€™m over at the townhouse that, until a few weeks ago, I shared with Ryder and Beckett. Now, Willโ€™s in my old room, and soon Ryder will be moving in with his new wife. Who heโ€™s already thinking of forsaking, it appears.

I know where heโ€™s coming from, though. From what heโ€™s told me, Gigiโ€™s family has gone overboard with this wedding. A wedding theyโ€™re only having because Gigiโ€™s father, the legendary Garrett Graham, is apparently a secret softie and wants to walk his only daughter down the aisle. I donโ€™t begrudge him thatโ€”I can totally see my dad doing the same thing with Maryanne. Not that sheโ€™s ever getting married. Maryanneโ€™s precious cargo. Iโ€™ve already decided that when she turns sixteen, Iโ€™m going to sit her down and talk to her about the benefits of becoming a nun. I think a convent would be a really good place for her.

โ€œMaybe itโ€™s not too late to get a divorce,โ€ Ryder says, his tone so hopeful that I canโ€™t help but snort.

โ€œYou donโ€™t want a divorce. Youโ€™re obsessed with that woman.โ€ I shrug. โ€œBesides, the wedding wonโ€™t be too bad. I, for one, am looking forward to getting absolutely wasted and seeing how many bridesmaids Beckett manages to hook up with.โ€

โ€œI mean, youโ€™re already banging the maid of honor, so thatโ€™s at least one he canโ€™t score with.โ€

Not quite, but now that Dixon told Gigi we were dating, itโ€™s understandable that Ryder thinks weโ€™ve banged each other already. I suppose I could let him keep thinking it, but I also donโ€™t want to besmirch Dianaโ€™s reputation.

โ€œActually, we havenโ€™t had s*x yet,โ€ I say. โ€œBullshit.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s true. Weโ€™re taking it slow.โ€

โ€œSince when do you take things slow?โ€ The question comes from Will, who pokes his head out of the kitchen. Itโ€™s just him and Ryder here, while Beckett is in Australia.

He walks in chugging a bottle of water and dressed like heโ€™s going out. Dark jeans encase his long legs, and his blue button-down is the same light shade as his eyes.

โ€œYou off somewhere?โ€ Ryder asks.

โ€œYeah, heading to the city,โ€ Will tells him. โ€œActually, Iโ€™m meeting your wife and your girlfriendโ€โ€”he nods toward meโ€”โ€œfor drinks.โ€

Ryder narrows his eyes. โ€œGisele said it was girlsโ€™ night.โ€

โ€œWhat can I tell ya? Diana invited me.โ€ He flashes me a smug look. โ€œYour girlfriend likes me better than you.โ€

โ€œProbably,โ€ I agree. โ€œI annoy the fuck out of her.โ€ Ryder snickers. โ€œHow did this happen, anyway?โ€

โ€œNah, I saw it coming,โ€ Will says. โ€œThey made out at the pool party, and we all had to pretend it was for a dare.โ€

I ignore Willโ€™s smirk and glance at Ryder. โ€œI donโ€™t know. It sort of happened and now Iโ€™ve got a girlfriend.โ€

He lifts his eyebrows. โ€œMade it exclusive pretty fast.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t exactlyย notย be exclusive. Sheโ€™s Gigiโ€™s best friend and Iโ€™m not looking to get murdered. But donโ€™t read too much into it. Girlfriend is just for lack of a better term.โ€

โ€œDude, heโ€™s downplaying it,โ€ Will says to Ryder. โ€œItโ€™s serious as fuck.

He entered a dance competition with her.โ€

My best friendโ€™s head swings toward me. I swallow a groan. I was hoping to keep that to myself for a while longer.

โ€œWhat do you mean you entered aย dance competition? Whatโ€™s happened to you since you moved out? Who are you?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re asking whoย Iย am? You got married,โ€ I shoot back. โ€œYou changed first, man. Donโ€™t put this on me. Youโ€™re the one who ruined our friendship.โ€

He snickers and flips up his middle finger.

โ€œHow did you know about the dance thing?โ€ I direct the question to Will. Iโ€™m deeply suspicious now.

โ€œDiana announced it on Ride or Dance.โ€

โ€œWhat the fuck is Ride or Dance?โ€ Then it hits me, the memory of her and Kenji filming that day at the pool. โ€œOh no. She didnโ€™t.โ€

Will grins at me.

Leaning toward the coffee table, I grab my phone. A minute later, the screen shows the latest video from Dianaโ€™s ridiculous dance account. My stomach drops when I realize she has over a hundred thousand followers. Kill me now.

The volume is on silent, so I turn it up and press play. Dianaโ€™s high, bubbly voice blares out of my phone.

โ€œHello, dancers! I wanted to give you a quick update on NUABC. Kenji is out. No, donโ€™t get all dramatic. We didnโ€™t have a huge fight. He simply decided that superyachts are more important than me. Although, who can blame him? Superyachts probably are more important than me. But yes, heโ€™s going to be spending his summer on the Mediterranean, which means he wonโ€™t be able to compete, so Iโ€™ve had to find a new partner. And I think, judging by all the comments on our last video, a lot of you will be happy

with this partner reveal. You guessed itโ€”I am indeed talking about Asshole Neighbor.โ€

Ryder snorts mid-sip of his beer.

โ€œOh, and youโ€™ll love this too. Asshole Neighbor is now also Trial Boyfriend.โ€

โ€œTrial?โ€ I growl.

Will starts laughing. My friends are dicks.

โ€œIโ€™ve decided to give him a shot to prove that he is worthy of my love. So yes, we are dancing, and we are dating. We are dance dating. Itโ€™s going to be glorious. Our rehearsals start this weekend, so stay tuned for some Asshole Neighbor content and all the grief I anticipate him bringing me. All right, Iโ€™m off to bed. Good night, dancers.โ€

โ€œShe is so lame.โ€ I groan.

โ€œI think sheโ€™s cute,โ€ Will says. โ€œWhy donโ€™t you date her, then?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll make sure to tell her you said that when weโ€™re having drinks tonight. Anyway, yeah, I gotta go.โ€ He glances at Ryder. โ€œDonโ€™t expect me back tonight. Iโ€™ll probably crash at my cousin Robโ€™s in Boston. I think heโ€™s joining us for drinks.โ€

I shake my head. โ€œHow are you and โ€˜Robโ€™โ€”โ€ I make quotations.

โ€œWhy are you using air quotes? Are you implying that Rob is not real?โ€ โ€œโ€”on a double date with Ryderโ€™s wife and my girlfriend, while he and I

are here,ย notย on a date with them?โ€ I finish in disbelief.

โ€œI donโ€™t know. Some guys have all the luck.โ€ Will gives an exaggerated shrug and saunters out of the living room.

After the front door closes, Ryderโ€™s dark blue eyes grow sober again. โ€œLook, about you and Diana. Be careful, okay? Like you said, sheโ€™s Gigiโ€™s best friend.โ€

โ€œTrust me, you donโ€™t have to worry.โ€ Literally. Because itโ€™s fake.

โ€œHonestly,โ€ I insist when I note his dubious expression. โ€œI canโ€™t see this lasting too long.โ€

โ€œNo?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s not really my type. You know I prefer a more serious girl.

Someone whoโ€™s on the same page as me.โ€ โ€œAnd what page is that?โ€

โ€œThe long-term kind.โ€ I shrug. โ€œDixon is great, but she lives in the moment. She acts on these whims, throws herself into random new projects. Sheโ€™s the kind of person whoโ€™s going to, like, take off to Budapest for a year. I donโ€™t think sheโ€™s wanting to settle down anytime soon. Weโ€™re just having fun.โ€

โ€œFair enough.โ€ He rubs the side of his face, thoughtful. โ€œBut if you truly donโ€™t see anything long-term with her, donโ€™t let her get attached.โ€

โ€œNah. Sheโ€™s the one insisting we keep it casual,โ€ I lie. โ€œThe girlfriend- boyfriend label is just easier to say than โ€˜this is my friends with benefits,โ€™ you know?โ€

He relaxes. โ€œGot it. So itโ€™s more of a friends-with benefits-sitch.โ€ โ€œExactly.โ€

โ€œBut you havenโ€™t had s*x.โ€ Heโ€™s skeptical again.

โ€œNot yet. But I assume weโ€™ll be banging by like, tomorrow.โ€ He snickers. โ€œAll right.โ€

โ€œWhat about you?โ€ I say, eager to change the subject. โ€œMarried life treating you okay? Youโ€™re not tired of Gisele yet?โ€

โ€œNever.โ€ His face softens anytime Gigi is mentioned. And whenever that raw, unconcealed love floods his face, it almost feels like youโ€™re intruding. Like youโ€™ve been given a window into an intensely personal thing that doesnโ€™t belong to you.

But the dude simply canโ€™t disguise his feelings for the woman, which is funny, because Luke Ryder is an expert at hiding his emotions. Since Iโ€™ve known him, Iโ€™ve never been a hundred percent sure where his headโ€™s at. But thereโ€™s no uncertainty with Gigi. He adores her. Worships her. Sheโ€™s his entire life and he would die for her. Itโ€™s telegraphed in his eyes the moment you say her name.

โ€œBut Iโ€™m really not excited about this wedding,โ€ he admits in a pained voice.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry. But I got you, man. Whatever you need.โ€

He sighs. โ€œThanks, brother. Iโ€™m gonna need you to ply me with alcohol so I can forget about how many people will be there. Maybe rub my back while I puke.โ€

I laugh. โ€œYouโ€™ll be fine.โ€

โ€œOh, hey. I forgot to ask youโ€”do you want to help out at the Hockey Kings camp? Itโ€™s in a few weeks.โ€

โ€œOh, right. Thatโ€™s in August. Which Harvard guy did they pick to coach with you?โ€

โ€œTroy Talvo.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s good,โ€ I say begrudgingly.

โ€œThe boys are playing a game on the last day and we need some linesmen. You in?โ€

โ€œWill Garrett and Connelly be there?โ€ โ€œItโ€™s their camp.โ€

โ€œThen yes.โ€

Chuckling, he rolls his eyes at me. โ€œThatโ€™s the only way youโ€™ll do it?

Not out of the goodness of your heart?โ€

I grin at him. โ€œI will ruthlessly pursue my own interests and Iโ€™ll never apologize for it.โ€

โ€œDude, Diana can do so much better than you.โ€ โ€œHa. Like Gigi earned herself a prince.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re probably right about that. Theyโ€™re both way out of our leagues.โ€
