Trial boyfriend
โI donโt want to get married anymore.โ
The glum statement comes from Ryder, who sits on the other end of the couch, stone faced.
I do my best not to laugh at him. โHate to break it to you, bro, but youโre already married.โ
Itโs Friday night, and Iโm over at the townhouse that, until a few weeks ago, I shared with Ryder and Beckett. Now, Willโs in my old room, and soon Ryder will be moving in with his new wife. Who heโs already thinking of forsaking, it appears.
I know where heโs coming from, though. From what heโs told me, Gigiโs family has gone overboard with this wedding. A wedding theyโre only having because Gigiโs father, the legendary Garrett Graham, is apparently a secret softie and wants to walk his only daughter down the aisle. I donโt begrudge him thatโI can totally see my dad doing the same thing with Maryanne. Not that sheโs ever getting married. Maryanneโs precious cargo. Iโve already decided that when she turns sixteen, Iโm going to sit her down and talk to her about the benefits of becoming a nun. I think a convent would be a really good place for her.
โMaybe itโs not too late to get a divorce,โ Ryder says, his tone so hopeful that I canโt help but snort.
โYou donโt want a divorce. Youโre obsessed with that woman.โ I shrug. โBesides, the wedding wonโt be too bad. I, for one, am looking forward to getting absolutely wasted and seeing how many bridesmaids Beckett manages to hook up with.โ
โI mean, youโre already banging the maid of honor, so thatโs at least one he canโt score with.โ
Not quite, but now that Dixon told Gigi we were dating, itโs understandable that Ryder thinks weโve banged each other already. I suppose I could let him keep thinking it, but I also donโt want to besmirch Dianaโs reputation.
โActually, we havenโt had s*x yet,โ I say. โBullshit.โ
โItโs true. Weโre taking it slow.โ
โSince when do you take things slow?โ The question comes from Will, who pokes his head out of the kitchen. Itโs just him and Ryder here, while Beckett is in Australia.
He walks in chugging a bottle of water and dressed like heโs going out. Dark jeans encase his long legs, and his blue button-down is the same light shade as his eyes.
โYou off somewhere?โ Ryder asks.
โYeah, heading to the city,โ Will tells him. โActually, Iโm meeting your wife and your girlfriendโโhe nods toward meโโfor drinks.โ
Ryder narrows his eyes. โGisele said it was girlsโ night.โ
โWhat can I tell ya? Diana invited me.โ He flashes me a smug look. โYour girlfriend likes me better than you.โ
โProbably,โ I agree. โI annoy the fuck out of her.โ Ryder snickers. โHow did this happen, anyway?โ
โNah, I saw it coming,โ Will says. โThey made out at the pool party, and we all had to pretend it was for a dare.โ
I ignore Willโs smirk and glance at Ryder. โI donโt know. It sort of happened and now Iโve got a girlfriend.โ
He lifts his eyebrows. โMade it exclusive pretty fast.โ
โI canโt exactlyย notย be exclusive. Sheโs Gigiโs best friend and Iโm not looking to get murdered. But donโt read too much into it. Girlfriend is just for lack of a better term.โ
โDude, heโs downplaying it,โ Will says to Ryder. โItโs serious as fuck.
He entered a dance competition with her.โ
My best friendโs head swings toward me. I swallow a groan. I was hoping to keep that to myself for a while longer.
โWhat do you mean you entered aย dance competition? Whatโs happened to you since you moved out? Who are you?โ
โYouโre asking whoย Iย am? You got married,โ I shoot back. โYou changed first, man. Donโt put this on me. Youโre the one who ruined our friendship.โ
He snickers and flips up his middle finger.
โHow did you know about the dance thing?โ I direct the question to Will. Iโm deeply suspicious now.
โDiana announced it on Ride or Dance.โ
โWhat the fuck is Ride or Dance?โ Then it hits me, the memory of her and Kenji filming that day at the pool. โOh no. She didnโt.โ
Will grins at me.
Leaning toward the coffee table, I grab my phone. A minute later, the screen shows the latest video from Dianaโs ridiculous dance account. My stomach drops when I realize she has over a hundred thousand followers. Kill me now.
The volume is on silent, so I turn it up and press play. Dianaโs high, bubbly voice blares out of my phone.
โHello, dancers! I wanted to give you a quick update on NUABC. Kenji is out. No, donโt get all dramatic. We didnโt have a huge fight. He simply decided that superyachts are more important than me. Although, who can blame him? Superyachts probably are more important than me. But yes, heโs going to be spending his summer on the Mediterranean, which means he wonโt be able to compete, so Iโve had to find a new partner. And I think, judging by all the comments on our last video, a lot of you will be happy
with this partner reveal. You guessed itโI am indeed talking about Asshole Neighbor.โ
Ryder snorts mid-sip of his beer.
โOh, and youโll love this too. Asshole Neighbor is now also Trial Boyfriend.โ
โTrial?โ I growl.
Will starts laughing. My friends are dicks.
โIโve decided to give him a shot to prove that he is worthy of my love. So yes, we are dancing, and we are dating. We are dance dating. Itโs going to be glorious. Our rehearsals start this weekend, so stay tuned for some Asshole Neighbor content and all the grief I anticipate him bringing me. All right, Iโm off to bed. Good night, dancers.โ
โShe is so lame.โ I groan.
โI think sheโs cute,โ Will says. โWhy donโt you date her, then?โ
โIโll make sure to tell her you said that when weโre having drinks tonight. Anyway, yeah, I gotta go.โ He glances at Ryder. โDonโt expect me back tonight. Iโll probably crash at my cousin Robโs in Boston. I think heโs joining us for drinks.โ
I shake my head. โHow are you and โRobโโโ I make quotations.
โWhy are you using air quotes? Are you implying that Rob is not real?โ โโon a double date with Ryderโs wife and my girlfriend, while he and I
are here,ย notย on a date with them?โ I finish in disbelief.
โI donโt know. Some guys have all the luck.โ Will gives an exaggerated shrug and saunters out of the living room.
After the front door closes, Ryderโs dark blue eyes grow sober again. โLook, about you and Diana. Be careful, okay? Like you said, sheโs Gigiโs best friend.โ
โTrust me, you donโt have to worry.โ Literally. Because itโs fake.
โHonestly,โ I insist when I note his dubious expression. โI canโt see this lasting too long.โ
โNo?โ
โSheโs not really my type. You know I prefer a more serious girl.
Someone whoโs on the same page as me.โ โAnd what page is that?โ
โThe long-term kind.โ I shrug. โDixon is great, but she lives in the moment. She acts on these whims, throws herself into random new projects. Sheโs the kind of person whoโs going to, like, take off to Budapest for a year. I donโt think sheโs wanting to settle down anytime soon. Weโre just having fun.โ
โFair enough.โ He rubs the side of his face, thoughtful. โBut if you truly donโt see anything long-term with her, donโt let her get attached.โ
โNah. Sheโs the one insisting we keep it casual,โ I lie. โThe girlfriend- boyfriend label is just easier to say than โthis is my friends with benefits,โ you know?โ
He relaxes. โGot it. So itโs more of a friends-with benefits-sitch.โ โExactly.โ
โBut you havenโt had s*x.โ Heโs skeptical again.
โNot yet. But I assume weโll be banging by like, tomorrow.โ He snickers. โAll right.โ
โWhat about you?โ I say, eager to change the subject. โMarried life treating you okay? Youโre not tired of Gisele yet?โ
โNever.โ His face softens anytime Gigi is mentioned. And whenever that raw, unconcealed love floods his face, it almost feels like youโre intruding. Like youโve been given a window into an intensely personal thing that doesnโt belong to you.
But the dude simply canโt disguise his feelings for the woman, which is funny, because Luke Ryder is an expert at hiding his emotions. Since Iโve known him, Iโve never been a hundred percent sure where his headโs at. But thereโs no uncertainty with Gigi. He adores her. Worships her. Sheโs his entire life and he would die for her. Itโs telegraphed in his eyes the moment you say her name.
โBut Iโm really not excited about this wedding,โ he admits in a pained voice.
โIโm sorry. But I got you, man. Whatever you need.โ
He sighs. โThanks, brother. Iโm gonna need you to ply me with alcohol so I can forget about how many people will be there. Maybe rub my back while I puke.โ
I laugh. โYouโll be fine.โ
โOh, hey. I forgot to ask youโdo you want to help out at the Hockey Kings camp? Itโs in a few weeks.โ
โOh, right. Thatโs in August. Which Harvard guy did they pick to coach with you?โ
โTroy Talvo.โ
โHeโs good,โ I say begrudgingly.
โThe boys are playing a game on the last day and we need some linesmen. You in?โ
โWill Garrett and Connelly be there?โ โItโs their camp.โ
โThen yes.โ
Chuckling, he rolls his eyes at me. โThatโs the only way youโll do it?
Not out of the goodness of your heart?โ
I grin at him. โI will ruthlessly pursue my own interests and Iโll never apologize for it.โ
โDude, Diana can do so much better than you.โ โHa. Like Gigi earned herself a prince.โ
โYouโre probably right about that. Theyโre both way out of our leagues.โ
