โGrandma, what the fuck?โ
I drop the takeout containers on the table and turn to face my grandmother, who is sprawled out on the couch in the center of her tiny house, watching one of theย Avengersย movies.
She blinks at me with wide-eyed innocence. โWhat?โ
โYou sent me to the diner because you knew that podcaster bastard was there.โ
โWell โฆ yes.โ
โPleaseโฆโ I pause, closing my eyes briefly as I gather myself. โPlease tell me that you didnโt plan this entire party just to get me here to talk to that podcaster.โ
โI donโt know why youโre asking. Itโs pretty obvious thatโs exactly what I did.โ
โOh my god.โ I drop into a chair and put a hand on my forehead. โWhy would โฆ what in โฆย Why?โ
She stands, adjusting the bun thatโs wobbling on the top of her head. She walks over to the table and pulls the food out of the bag. โHave youย seenย him?โ
โYou sold me out to a podcaster because heโsย cute?โ
โHeโs not just cute. My god. He even looks better than thatโthat guy, who is that?โ
I drop my hand from my forehead to see her pointing at the television. โChris Evans.โ I roll my eyes. โHe is not cuter than Chris Evans.โ
โWell, agree to disagree.โ She puts my burger and fries down in front of me. โBut, no. I did not sell you out because heโs cute. Iโm just saying that it might have helped when he showed up at my door with that smile.โ
โSmug smile,โ I mutter.
โOh yes, very smug. That boy is extremely impressed with himself.โ She laughs and walks to her minifridge. Her loose green dress swishes around her calves. โDo you want a beer?โ
โNo, thank you.โ
She cracks one open for herself and then sits down at the table. She pops a fry into her mouth. โI think that heโs your best shot.โ
โBest shot at what?โ
โAt figuring out who killed Savannah. We spoke for a long time, and he was very straightforward with me. He wants to find out the truth, not just hang you out to dry like everyone else.โ
I take a bite of my burger to avoid having to reply to that. I donโt want to tell her that the idea of Ben finding the truth terrifies me.
She points at me. Her fingernails are bright pink, the color chipped at the ends like sheโs been picking at it. โDonโt get that look.โ
โWhat look?โ
โLike youโve decided youโre guilty and have something to hide.โ โLetโs killโโ
I take another bite of my burger.
โI told him Iโd convince you to let him interview you,โ she says. โBold of you to think you could actually do that.โ
โLucy, letโs not pretend that youโre not going to do this for me.โ She pats my hand.
Dammit.
โYou need him,โ she continues. โI do not need that idiot.โ
โYes, you do. People believe men. Especially men who look like that. If he says you didnโt do itโif he even casts enough doubtโpeople will actually believe him. Look at that Ronan Farrow fellow. No one believed that movie man assaulted all those girls until he said it was true.โ
I sigh, because sheโs right.
Of course, that also means that if Ben decides I did it, Iโm extra fucked. โHe solved a cold case on the first season of the podcast,โ Grandma
says. โHeโs going to figure this out, and youโre going to help him.โ
โThe Harpers hired three different PIs and came up empty. How is Ben going to suddenly solve this?โ
โHe said he was going to find information that no one else had.โ I grab a fry. โHow exactly is he going to do that?โ
โWell, for one, youโre going to help him. And two, he already has.โ I stop with my mouth half-open, ready to take a bite. โWhat?โ โColin didnโt go straight home from the wedding.โ

EPISODE THREEโโMATT WAS TOO GOOD FOR HERโ
Colin Dunn had been dating Savannah for a few months when she was killed. Iโll let him introduce himself, in his own words.
Colin:ย I was a real shithead. [laughter] Yeah, man, I was just not into that whole small-town life. I hated every second of it, and I hated myself for not being brave enough to just hop a bus out of there. I sort of took that out on Savvy a lot.
Ben:ย Took it out on her? How?
Colin:ย I wasnโt that nice to her. I know I probably shouldnโt admit that, or I should, like, try to make myself look good, but, whatever, man. I just feel like I should be honest about it.
Ben:ย Take me back a bit. Howโd you guys meet?
Colin:ย At the bar where she worked. I wasnโt old enough to drink but I had a fake IDโyo, can I say that? Am I like admitting to a crime?
Ben:ย Youโre fine.
Colin:ย Yeah, so I was nineteen or twenty or whatever, and I had a fake ID. I donโt think Savvy knew it was fake. No, she definitely didnโt know. I always felt like I was a bad influence on her. She was just the nicest, sweetest girl, and I wasย notย the nicest guy. I think if I had met her a few years later, I could have been a better guy for her, but โฆ well, she got murdered. Which is a bummer.
Ben:ย It is indeed a bummer.
Colin:ย Anyways, we met at the bar, and hit it off right away.
Ben:ย This was when?
Colin:ย That was early in the year, like January. So, like four months before she died.
Ben:ย And you dated up until she was killed?
Colin:ย I mean โฆ I donโt know ifย datedย was the word. We werenโt โฆ uh, yeah, you know, letโs just say we dated. Yeah. Savvy was a nice girl. Nicer than me, thatโs for sure.
Ben:ย Did you know her friends?
Colin:ย Uh, sort of? Some of them?
Ben:ย Did you know Lucy? Had you met her before the wedding?
Colin:ย Yeah, Iโd met her once or twice. She was in the bar once, and sheโd been over at Savvyโs place once when I dropped by. So, I knew who she was, but like โฆ we werenโt buddies.
Ben:ย Did you have any particular impression of her?
Colin:ย Uh โฆ she was hot?
Ben:ย Anything else?
Colin:ย Not really.
Ben:ย Did you know Matt?
Colin:ย Not until the wedding.
Ben:ย And you hung out with him and Lucy at the wedding?
Colin:ย Yeah. We were at the same table.
Ben:ย What did you think of them?
Colin:ย Lucy didnโt really talk to me. Not in a rude way, just in a โwe have nothing in commonโ way. Matt and I talked about basketball someโit was during the NBA finals. Matt was a good time. He came to have fun at that wedding. Well, youโve heard.
Ben:ย And you saw that?
Colin:ย Oh yeah. He was definitely wasted.
Ben:ย How was he acting? Was he a happy drunk, was he angryโฆ?
Colin:ย Pretty happy drunk, from what I remember. He was dancing a lot, laughing โฆ completely ignoring Lucy, who seemed pissed about something.
Ben:ย At him?
Colin:ย I donโt know, man. I asked Savvy about it and she said Lucy was fine. โDonโt worry about it,โ she said. Like it was none of my business. And it wasnโt. I didnโt really care.
Ben:ย Savvy drove you to the wedding, but she left without you. What happened there?
Colin:ย Lucy and Matt had a fight, I think. I donโt know what it was about. But Savvy seemed upset about it, and she asked her brotherโKeatonโto take me home. I didnโt go with him, though. I didnโt live far, so I just walked.
Ben:ย You walked straight home?
Colin:ย Yeah.
Ben:ย By yourself?
Colin:ย I โฆ yeah.
Ben:ย A guest at that wedding says she saw you getting into a car with a woman.
Colin:ย What guest?
Ben:ย Just someone who wishes theyโd spoke up earlier. Did you get in anyoneโs car that night?
Colin:ย I โฆ um โฆ look. I sort of โฆ started talking to someone after Savvy left and one thing led to another โฆ
Ben:ย And you left with her?
Colin:ย Yeah.
Ben:ย So, your alibi, that you told the police. That you went home and were there all night.
That wasnโt true?
Colin:ย I mean โฆ I was home by like three a.m.
Ben:ย The coroner put Savvyโs death somewhere between midnight and three a.m. So you were actually out and about during the time she was killed.
Colin:ย It sounds bad when you put it like that. I wasnโtย out and about. I was with this woman, and then I went home.
Ben:ย She could vouch for you?
Colin:ย Not โฆ I mean, she wouldnโt.
Ben:ย Why not?
Colin:ย She wasnโt exactly โฆ single.
Ben:ย She was in a relationship.
Colin:ย Yes.
Ben:ย You went to her house?
Colin:ย No โฆ
Ben:ย Whereโd you go?
Colin:ย Just her car. She drove it a little bit down the road and we just โฆ I donโt think anyone at the wedding even noticed we were gone. They definitely didnโt noticeย Iย was gone,
anyway. If her husband was suspicious, I donโt know.
Ben:ย And then she drove you home?
Colin:ย No, I walked. She had to get home.
Ben:ย You walked home, alone, at what? One a.m.? Two? In the rain?
Colin:ย Itโs a safe town, man.
Ben:ย Iโm just trying to clarify the timeline here. You were out, alone, during the time Savvy was killed. But you lied to the police and said you walked home right after she left.
Colin:ย I didnโt kill her.
Ben:ย But this is the correct timeline now?
Colin:ย I didnโt kill her.
Yo, can we start again? I feel like I messed this up.
