โYouโre early!โ I blurt when Xaden opens my door Saturday morning to find me on the floor of my room, surrounded by every history text
I own and the two Jesinia loaned me.
Shit, Iโm supposed to meet her in less than an hour.
He blinks and shuts the door behind him. โHello to you, too.โ
โHi,โ I respond, my voice softening. The elation of seeing him is tempered by the shadows under his eyes. โSorry, I just wasnโt expecting you to make it until noon, if they even let you come andโ You lookโฆ exhausted.โ Even his movements are slower. Not by much, but I notice.
โThatโs what every man wants to hear.โ He sets his swords by the door and drops his pack right next to them. Like itโs where they go. Like this room is partly his, too. Like his room at Samara feels like itโs mine. Neither of us has ever asked for separate quarters.
Maybe I canโt fully trust him, but I also canโt stand to be away from him. โI didnโt say you arenโt beautiful. I implied that you need a nap.โ I nod
toward my empty bed. โYou should sleep.โ
His slow smile stops my heart. โYou think Iโm beautiful?โ
โLike you donโt already know that.โ I roll my eyes and flip the page inย The Journey of the First Six, a Secondhand Account, averting my gaze. โI also think you smell like youโve been flying for twelve hours.โ Itโs not
exactly true, but maybe it will check the already enormous ego I just inflated.
โGods, I missed you.โ He laughs and rips off his flight jacket, revealing the short sleeves of his summer uniform and indecently toned arms.
I breathe through the impulse to forget every single worry for a couple of hours by layingย himย out over this floor and try like hell to concentrate on the text in front of me.
โThink anyone will report me for using the bathing chamber?โ Heโs already rummaging through his pack.
โI donโt think anyone would report you for cold-blooded murder around here, let alone taking a bath.โ
โLieutenants arenโt exactly supposed to be sleeping in cadetsโ quarters when they visit,โ he tells me. โWeโre breaking a few rules.โ
โNever bothered you before.โ Letting his assumption that heโs sleeping here slide, I glance up from the book and immediately regret it when I see that heโs shirtless. Gods help me if he strips off anything else.
โDidnโt say it bothered me now.โ He stands, his arms full of fresh clothes from his pack. โJust donโt want to see you punished for my actions. I thought they were going to find a way to send you on maneuvers today, or just lock you away.โ
โMe too.โ Awareness spreads through every part of my body as I lock eyes with him. โIโm sure theyโll find a dark cellar for you next week, so we should try to enjoy this one.โ
โYou and I have different definitions of the word โenjoy.โโ He gestures to the books scattered on my floor.
โNot really.โ I scan the page quickly and flip to the next. โI think spending the day tangled up in that bed together would beย enjoyable, but since you drew your line, here I am with boring, sexless books.โ
โSay those three little words, and Iโll have you naked inย seconds.โ He looks at me with so much heat that I do a double take when I glance up, my breath catching.
โI want you.โ All day. Every day.
โThose are not the three words I need.โย He slides into my mind like a caress.ย โAnd why arenโt your shields up?โ
โWell, those are the words you get without full disclosure.โ I rip my gaze away. โAnd itโs just us in here.โ
โHmmm.โ He gives me a look I canโt decipher. โIโll be right back.โ
โYou donโt really smell,โ I whisper, loath to let him out of my sight for even a second.
โGet any closer, and youโll take that back.โ He leaves, and I do my best to concentrate on the book in front of me and not the thought that heโs about to be naked down the hall.
All I have to do is be honest with him about how I feel, and I can have him. His body, at least. But isnโt that all I really had before? Ironic that itโs my truthfulness that can put me out of my own misery when itโs his candor I crave. I guess in that way, weโre alike, both wanting more than the other person is willing to risk.
A few minutes later, he walks back in and the room feels instantly smaller, or maybe itโs the jump in my heart rate making it feel harder to breathe and not the lack of air.
โThat was quick.โ Iโve only read another twenty pages or so but I donโt bother hiding the two books I need to return. Itโs not like heโd know which are mine and which are borrowed. The less I have to hide, the better.
โI could make so many innuendos, but Iโll refrain.โ He tosses his things into his pack, then sinks into the armchair and leans forward, bracing his forearms on spread knees. He picks a book up off the floor. โWhere are all the books from? You didnโt have this many last year.โ
โMostly from my old room in the main college.โ I skim the current page and sigh. This book is mostly scribe-centric stories about the Great War that are heavily redacted, with one vague passage about discovering the ability to extend the wards. โI crated them before Parapet and thought my mother would have shipped them off to storage, but it appears she is more sentimental than Mira or I thought. They were right where I left them.โ It had been a surprising discovery. Nothing had been touched in my old room,
like I was expected back at any minute. โReally, you should get some sleep.โ
Jesinia will be pissed if I miss our appointment.
โColonel Daxtonโs Guide to Excelling in the Scribe Quadrant,โ he reads from the spine.
โThat one wasnโt as useful as I thought it would be the first time I read it,โ I joke.
โI would say not.โ He sets the book down and then tilts his head, reading the book I have open in front of me. โThe Journey of the First Six, a Secondhand Account.โ
โYes.โ My pulse leaps, and my stomach gets the same weightless feeling that usually comes when Tairn makes a steep dive. I should have hidden the damned books.
โOr maybe you want him to know,โย Tairn interjects.
โGoโฆbe busy.โ
โA class assignment?โ Xadenโs eyes narrow when I donโt answer.
โFor research.โ For some reason I canโt fathom, I draw the line at outright lying to him.
โI donโt remember anything about the First Six beingโฆโ A tick of his jaw later, his gaze jumps to mine. โYouโre hiding something from me.โ
Shit.ย He knows. Or he guesses. That was fast.
โViolet?โ Itโs practically a growl. He definitely knows. โWhy are you researching the First Six?โ
โFor Aretia.โ I shut the book. Thereโs nothing in it thatโs going to help, anyway.
Xaden draws a deep breath, and shadows extend from under the chair, rolling over his feet like a dark fog.
โFor you, really.โ The admission is soft.
He stills so completely that Iโm not sure heโs even breathing.
โBrennan told you we have a wardstone.โ His words are clipped, controlled. The shadows begin moving like hands, gathering all the books around me but the one Iโm holding and stacking them. โIโm going to fucking kill him.โ
โWhy? Because heโs more forthcoming with me thanย youย are?โ I close the book. โRelax, itโs not like he gave me your journal or something.โ
โI donโt keep one, but that would have been far preferable,โ he snaps. โDigging around for information on Navarreโs most classified defense will get you killed.โ
โCivilians are fleeing for our borders, no one in Navarre knows the truth, and Aretia needs to defend itselfโto protect the people Iโm guessing youโre prepared to take in when venin inevitably reach Tyrrendor.โ I clutch the old tome to my chest. โYouย areย going to take people in, arenโt you?โ
โOf course we are.โ
โGood.โ At least my faith isnโt misplaced. I glance over my shoulder at the clock on my desk. Twenty minutes until I have to return the book.
โBut itโs weapons that are going to defend Tyrrendor.โ
โI beg to differ, and Iโll keep researching until I figure out how the First Six put these wards in place so we can duplicate the process in Aretia.โ I tilt my chin at him.
โNo one knows how it was originally done, only how to maintain them.โ He rises from the chair, and his shadows follow as he paces, a barometer for his mood. โItโs a lost magic, and you canโt deny that it was probablyย lostย on purpose.โ
โSomeone knows,โ I counter, tracking his movements. โThereโs no chance that someone didnโt leave a record somewhere in case they fail. We arenโt going to destroy the only thing that could save us. We would hide it, but we wouldnโt destroy it.โ
โAnd how the hell do you propose finding that record without letting the scribes know what youโre up to?โ he challenges, turning at the edge of my bed with his hands laced behind his neck and pinning me with a stare that might have sent me running last year.
The click of my teeth is audible as I snap my mouth shut.
He takes one deep breath, then another, closing his eyes. โThe book youโre clutching like a newborn. Itโs not one of yours, is it?โ
โItโs currently in my possession.โ
โViolet.โ I can practically feel him counting to ten in his head for patience.
โFine. I borrowed it from the Archives. Are you really going to yell at me for trying to help?โ
โWho knows?โ The question is so soft that I almost wish he would just yell. Heโs always at his most lethal when heโs calm like this.
โA friend.โ
His eyes snap open. โThereโs a reason we donโt fuck around in the Archives. Thatโs the beating heart of the enemy.โ His gaze bores into mine. โWe donโt have any friends there.โ
โWell, I do.โ I stand slowly. โAnd Iโm going to be late to return the book if I donโt head down there now. So why donโt you get some sleep while I
โโ
โIโm coming with you.โ
โThe hell you are.โ I slip the book into the borrowed bag. โYouโll scare her witless. I havenโt told her anything about you, or Aretia, or whatโs going on outside our borders, so relax.โ
Go figure, he doesnโt. โShe just knows youโre researching classified material. Iโm not going toย relaxย knowing that youโve put yourself in danger.โ
โYouโre in danger every single day.โ Anger flushes my skin. Someone knocks on the door, and he sighs before jerking it open.
โOh!โ Rhiannon steps back, almost bumping into Ridoc. โI didnโt realize you were here today, Lieutenant Riorson.โ She glances over at me. โVi, we were going to ask if you wanted to come to Chantara with usโโ
โSheโs busy,โ Xaden responds, clasping my hand. โDonโt be an ass.โ I yank my hand from his.
โWhoa.โ Ridocโs eyebrows rise as I turn toward Xaden.
โIโve done exactly what you asked. I keptย everythingย from my friends.โย I glare into the depths of his soul.ย โSo donโt be an asshole to them.โ
โExactly what Iโve asked?โย He leans down, bringing his face within a breath of mine.ย โBy keeping your research a secret?โ
My jaw drops.ย โAre you really going to stand here and compare secrets with me?โ
โItโs not the same.โย He winces.
โItโsย exactlyย the same!โย I grip the strap of the bag to keep from jabbing him in the chest with my finger. How fuckingย dareย he.ย โIโm researching the wards forย you.โ
โWhy do you think Iโm so angry?โย The tension in his eyes, his posture, his tone equals mine.
โBecause you donโt like being on the other side of secrets.โ
โWhat the hell is going on?โ Sawyer asks from the hallway.
โIโฆuhโฆโ Ridoc scratches the top of his head. โI think theyโre fighting.โ
โThat hasโฆ How long have you been hiding this from me?โย Xaden questions.
โTheyโre not evenโฆspeaking,โ Rhiannon mutters.
โI havenโt hiddenย shitย from you. Iโve simply told you selective truths.โ
He draws back like Iโve hit him.
โSorry, guys.โ I turn to my friends. โTrust me, thereโs nothing I would rather do than go to Chantara with you, but unfortunately, I have to run an errand. Next weekend?โ
โYouโll be in Samara.โ Xaden folds his arms across his chest.
How is it possible to both love someone and loathe them all in the same moment?
Rhiannon looks between the two of us, then settles her attention on me. โThen the weekend after,โ she suggests quietly.
I nod.
Her brow knits in wordless question.
โIโm fine. I promise. You guys have a great time.โ I force a smile. โIโll let you know if I need your help burying a body later.โ
Ridoc sputters into a cough, and Sawyer pounds him on the back.
โI think she might mean you,โ Rhiannon says as she gives Xaden an arch look.
โIโm certain she does.โ
โLetโs go,โ Sawyer says, leading the three of them out of the doorway.
โIโll do it, too,โ Rhiannon says over her shoulder. โIโve never moved anything as big as you, but I bet my signet could put you in the ground without even disturbing the dirt if Iโm pissed enough.โ She shoots a look at him before walking down the hallway.
Xaden sighs and closes the door. โYou have some loyal friends.โ
โI do,โ I agree. โJust remember you said that when it comes time to tell them whatโs going on under their noses.โ
His answer is barely a grunt. โI have to goโโ
โIโm pissed that you hid it from me,โ he interrupts. โBut Iโm livid that youโve put your life at riskย forย me. Thatโs not something I can handle.โ
โItโs not at risk. I can trust her.โ I reach for the door handle, and he steps aside. His mouth tightens with anger, but itโs the flash of fear in his eyes that makes me pause. If I had a way of knowing he was just a little safer in Samara, I would want it. Even if heโs being an ass. โFine. You can come with me if you agreeย notย to scare her.โ
โI canโt control her feelings.โ He scoffs. I arch a single brow.
โI just want to meet her.โ He lifts his hands, palms outward.
โSo you can see if sheโs trustworthy? By looking at her? Even you arenโt that powerful.โ I open the door and step out into the hallway. โLetโs go.โ
โIโll know. Iโm an incredible judge of character.โย He walks out after me, pulling the door closed.
โYour ego really is boundless.โ We start down the hall and turn right into the central corridor.ย โAnd just because Iโm letting you come doesnโt mean Iโm not still pissed at you.โ
โSame.โย He puts his hand on the small of my back when we pass a group of cadets.
โYou donโt have to touch me for them to think you have a reason to be here. Everyone knows that weโฆโ
โKnows that we what? Youโve been pretty damned clear that weโre not together.โ
Waitโฆis that hurt in his voice? I hate the way my ire dulls. Itโs easier to live in the anger.
We head down the central staircase, winding our way past the ground floor, where most cadets branch off, and into the sublevel of the quadrant.
Itโs a maze of tunnels down here, but I know my way well enough.
โYou would never sit here and do nothing when you could help. Asking me to do differently is justโฆinsulting,โ I whisper to him once I know weโre alone in the tunnels. โIโm smart enough to handle myself in the Archives.โ
โI never said you werenโt brilliant. I never even said your plan wasnโt brilliant. I said youโre putting yourself in danger and Iโm just asking you to be honest with me.โ Mage lights flicker on as we make our way toward the covered bridge that spans the canyon between the Riders Quadrant and the main college. โVarrish pushed you to near-fucking-burnout, and you didnโt tell me that, either.โ His jaw works. โOr that you wielded in the middle of the courtyard after Battle Brief.โ
โHow did you know?โ I hadnโt mentioned Varrish in the letter Iโd left for him.
โYou didnโt think Bodhi would tell me?โ His shadows stream forward, opening the door, and we head across the enclosed bridge. I donโt think Iโll ever get used to the casual way he uses his power.
โI hoped he wouldnโt,โ I admit.
โThatโs the shit you need to tell me, Violet.โ
โWhat would you have done? Flown back here and killed him? Heโs the vice commandant.โ
โI debated it.โ He opens the next set of doors the same way.
โBodhi has miraculously found reasons for our squad to miss maneuvers,โ I tell him as we walk into the main campus, passing the infirmary.
โAnd how long isย thatย going to work? Weโre twice as likely to find a solution if you tell me whatโs goingโโ Xadenโs head snaps forward and he grabs me by the waist, stopping in the middle of the hallway.
But weโve already been seen.
โPut your shields back up.โ
โItโs Nolon,โย I point out but raise them anyway as guilt nips at me for letting them fall in the first place. I keep hoping for the moment Xaden promises is coming, where itโs second nature, but so far, itโs maximum effort to keep them in place.
โNolon?โ My jaw drops at how much weight the mender has lost. His skin hangs as loosely as his black uniform, and his eyes are missing their usual spark when he tries to smile at me.
โViolet. Itโs good to see you.โ He glances at Xaden, his gaze falling to the arm wrapped protectively around my waist. โDid you draw back because youโre under the assumption that Iโm going to harm the young woman Iโve been mending for the last six years, Riorson? Or is it that you think no one knows that you two spend all your time together on the days either of you has leave? Because I assure you, I would never endanger Violet, andย everyoneย already knows.โ
I step out of Xadenโs arms. โWhat are you doing standing in the middle of the hallway? You look like youโre ready to drop.โ
โYouโre on it with the compliments today.โ
Clearly, I need better shields if itโs that easy for Xaden to slip in again.
โWaiting for someone.โ Nolon scratches a few daysโ growth of beard on his jaw. โAnd I suppose I could use some rest. Itโs hard work, mending a soul. Been at it for months now.โ His smile lifts on one side, but I canโt tell if heโs joking or not. โYouโve been well so far this year? I havenโt been called to mend you.โ
โIโm all right. I subluxated my shoulder a couple of weeks ago andโโ I donโt know if heโs as close to Varrish as my friends have hypothesized. The thought gives me pause and keeps me from mentioning the burnout. โAnd Iโve been really good about keeping my knees wrapped. No broken bones yet, either.โ
โGood.โ Nolon nods as the door behind us opens. โThatโs good.โ
โIโm here!โ Caroline Ashton races forward, passing us on the left. โSorry Iโm late!โ
โPunctuality is appreciated,โ Nolon lectures her before looking my way. โDo us both a favor and stay healthy, Violet.โ
โI will,โ I promise.
Caroline shoots a quick glare in my direction, and they disappear into the infirmary, the door closing softly behind them.
โShe didnโt look hurt,โ I note as Xaden and I start toward the Archives again.
โNo, she didnโt,โ Xaden agrees. โMust be visiting another cadet from First Wing. Nolon looks like heโs about to burn out himself. Have there been more injuries than usual?โ
โNot that Iโm aware of. Ridoc thinks theyโre using Nolon for interrogations.โ My face crinkles. โBut Iโm not sure if he was serious or not. Itโs hard to tell with Ridoc.โ
โHmm.โ Thatโs all he says as we descend, the tunnels slanting downward toward the lowest point of Basgiath. The deeper we go, the cooler the air becomes, and the sharper a pang I recognize as grief resonates in my chest.
โWhat are you thinking? Your face just fell,โ Xaden notes quietly as we pass by the stairs that lead up to the main campus.
โNothing.โ
โYou canโt expect more than one-word answers from me and not give the same.โ
He has a point.
โMy father loved this place. He was ecstatic when my mother was assigned here because it meant that heโd have the full resources of the Archives.โ I smile at the memory. โNot that he didnโt love maintaining the records and libraries at the outposts we were stationed at, but to a scribe, this place is the pinnacle of a career. Itโs their temple.โ We round the last curve, bringing the vault-style door into view. The circular entrance is ten feet across and guarded by a singular scribe, whoโs asleep in his chair.
โA well-guarded one.โ Xaden shoots a disgusted look at the sleeping scribe.
โPromise me youโll be on your best behavior.โ I grip his elbow so he knows I mean it.ย โSheโs an old friend.โ
โSo was Aetos.โ
I narrow my eyes.
โIf sheโs a true friend, then she has nothing to worry about.โ
โLook, if she was going to turn me in, she would have done it when I requestedย The Fables of the Barrenย last year,โย I tell him as we cross into the Archives.
โYou. What?โย His jaw flexes, and he breathes deeply when we reach the table. The Archives are empty again, thank Zihnal, but thatโs why Jesinia chose Saturdays.
โBefore Mira gave me the book at Montserrat, I requested it. And I didnโt think anything of it at the time. But no one showed up at my door. No one hauled me off and divested me of my head. Because we. Are. Friends.โ
He remains silent as Jesinia approaches, her gaze widening as she looks between us.
Her steps slow.
โHeโs with me,โ I sign, offering a smile.ย โStop scaring her.โ โIโm just standing here.โ
โThatโs enough. Trust me.โ
โDid you find what you were looking for?โ she signs back, nervously biting her lip, her focus darting to Xaden.
โNo.โ I hand the bag over to her, and she slings the strap over her shoulder. โTheyโre all too recentโฆand vague.โ
Her lips purse in thought.
โMaybe we should shift to something about the history of wards in general?โ I suggest.
โGive me a couple of minutes. I have an idea.โ โThank you for helping us,โ Xaden signs.
Jesinia nods, then disappears into the rows of bookshelves. โYou can sign,โ I whisper at him.
โYou speak Tyrrish,โ he replies. โOne is far less common than the other.โ
We stand there in awkward silence, our argument still festeringโat least on my part. I never know how heโs feeling, which is one of our problems.
By using that one word with Jesiniaโusโheโs linked himself to me. If she turns me in, heโll be dragged down, too.
โTry these two,โ Jesinia signs when she returns, then hands over the bag. โAlso, I returned yours. Thank you for letting me read it.โ
โWhat did you think about it?โ I ask, unnervingly aware that Xaden is watching.
Whatever she says next will seal her fate with him.
โSolid folklore with good stories.โ She tilts her head to the side. โIt was a limited printing, clearly done on a press, but not so limited that there wouldnโt have been one submitted to the Archives at publication.โ The look she gives me is full of expectation. โItโs anโฆodd subject matter to leave out of the Archives, donโt you think?โ
I swallow hard. โI do.โ Xaden tenses beside me.
โAs I said,โ she continues. โIntriguing. Iโll see you Saturday after next?โ
I nod, and we leave after thanking her again, passing Nasya, who has started to snore in his seat.
Weโre halfway through the tunnels before Xaden speaks.
โTell me what other book is in the bag.โย Guess the argument is still festering inside him, too.
โItโsย The Fables of the Barren.โย Thereโs no point lying to him.
โYou gave that to her? Why?โย Xadenโs head slants in my direction, and he stops in the middle of the tunnel, grasping my elbow gently as fear flashes in his eyes.
โI loaned it to her, and because she asked.โ
โWith that text, she could have turned you in.โย Anger burns in his eyes.
โAnd if I report that sheโs not recording my requests, sheโll be at Markhamโs mercy.โย I grip the strap of the bag a little tighter.ย โTrust has to go both ways to mean anything.โ
โBoth ways, but youโre shutting me out while Iโm trying my damnedest to open up to you.โ
Says the man whoโs never so much as told me he loves me. If he does. Gods, Iโm so sick of having to make the first move when it comes to this
man. And today isnโt the day to open myself up to that rejection, too.
โSure, as long as you can keepย yourย secrets. Has it ever occurred to you that thisโโI gesture between usโโis all because you donโt trustย me?โย I take a step backward.ย โYou expect complete, blind faith without giving it. It. Goes. Both. Ways.โ
โIโm the one who doesnโt trustย you?โย Shadowsย curl around his ankles, following him as he pivots, heading up the tunnel.ย โIโll see you later. I have to find Bodhi.โ
Heโs heading off on revolution business, no doubt, and leaving me behind. Again.
โThatโs all you have to say?โ I call out, frustration locking my muscles. โNo good can come of the things I want to say right now, Violet,โ he
says over his shoulder. โSo, instead of digging a deeper hole with words Iโll regret later, Iโm going to take some space and do something productive, because this isnโt.โ
Itโs on the tip of my tongue to tell him that he doesnโt get to choose when we have a fight, but he asked for space, and I can do the mature thing and give it to him.
When I wake in the morning, the other half of my bed hasnโt been slept in and his things are gone. I canโt stop my chest from tightening at the thought that heโs headed back to the front lines, that either of us could be killed at any moment, and the last words we said to each other were in anger.
