The shock that echoed through the room was contagious.
โYes,ย thatย Isbeth,โ she continued, dragging her hand down the length of the curtain. โI was King Malecโs loverโhis confidante, his friend, and hisโฆhis everything. And your motherโฆโ She looked over her shoulder at Casteel, her grip on the curtain tightening. โShe took that away. She poisoned me with belladonna. Can you believe that? Tacky.โ Her lip curled. โIf Malec hadnโt found me in time, I wouldnโt be standing here, but he did. He justโฆknew something was wrong.โ She pressed her hand against her chest as she held us all in suspended silence. โWe were heartmates. He would have done anything for me.โ
Queen Ileanaโno, if what she was saying was true, Queenย Isbethย tipped her head back. โHe gave me his blood, unsure of what would happen. He was just desperate and refused to allow me to die.โ
I thought of Casteelโwhat heโd done to save me.
โBut he didnโt make me into a vampry. I wasnโt the first. You see, deities arenโt like Atlantians. Their blood is far more powerful than that.โ
I looked at Casteel. โIs that true?โ
โIt is,โ his brother answered. โWhen deities Ascend a mortal, they do not become a vampry. They become something without the pesky limitations the Ascended have.โ
Casteel let out a harsh breath, and I knew he was thinking the same as I was. That his parentsย hadย to know this entire time that Queen Ileana wasโฆthat she was Isbeth.
Just then, the Blood Queen tore down the curtain, letting bright sunlight flow in through the window. The knights scattered back from where the sunlight crept across the floor. Ian moved quickly, avoiding contact, but sheโฆ
She stood in the flood of sunlight, the crown and the jewels at her throat, wrists, and waist twinkling. She did not begin screaming in pain,
twisting in agony or decaying.
Nothing happened.
Just like nothing had happened when I walked into the sunlight.
I stared at her, my chest rising and falling. โWhatโฆwhat are you?โ
โIโve been many things in my life. A daughter. A friend. A whore. A mistress.โ
โThatโs a hell of a list to be proud of,โ Casteel growled as I saw Naill grip the back of a chair as he shook his head. โThe mistress of King Malec. Congratulations.โ
โMalec?โ She smirked at him as the guards shifted in closer, replacing the knights who now stood in the shadowy alcoves. โI was his mistress. I loved him. I still do. That is no lie. And then your mother had to go and ruin him. But, no. I am no longer the mistress of any manโmortal or god.โ
โGod?โ I coughed out. โMalec wasโโ
โA god,โ Isbeth cut me off. โHe was Nyktosโs son, and Nyktos is no normal god. He is a Primal, something far older and more powerful,โ she said, and I knew that part to be true. โAny that carry his blood would be a god. But Eloana never knew that, did she? I did. I knew exactly who and what he was. A deity cannot make a vampry, and neither can a god.โ
Casteelโs hand slipped away from me. โYou lie.โ
โWhy would I lie about that?โ She shook her head as she followed the trail of light to the steps. โMalec was a god.โ
โWhy would he pretend to be a deity if he was a god?โ Casteel demanded.
โBecause he grew tired of being held in Iliseeum while the children, generations removed, were allowed to explore beyond the Mountains of Nyktos, and he could do just that. Nyktosโs children were born in the mortal realm, just as his Consort was.โ
I jolted, remembering what Nyktos had said about the Primalsโ powers in the realm beyond Iliseeum. Only those born within the realm could retain their powers here.
I spared a brief glance at Casteel as she said, โCome now, you do know your own history? I lived it, Casteel. How do you think Malec managed to kill the other deities? Seize power like he did? A deity couldnโt have done that, not even one descended from Nyktos. And there were no deities of that line. There has only ever been the two sons.โ
A long moment of silence passed, one where I could feel the chains of disbelief loosening and falling away as we stared at the Blood Queen, who clearly was not a vampry.
โDid my mother know what he really was?โ Casteel forced out.
โThat is at least one lie she didnโt tell. And as I said, I am not a vampry, and I am not a deity.โ Her gaze focused back on me. โBecause a god Ascended me, I became one.โ
โThat is not how that works,โ Casteel growled, and while I didnโt know much about the gods, I had to believe he was right. One couldnโt just be made into a god.
She raised a brow. โItโs not?โ
Vonetta and Lyra inched toward Casteel and me, just as Naill and the others were also doingโand had been attempting for several minutes. Their loathing and fear matched that of Delano and Kieran, and that said something. If she truly was a god, wouldnโt they be drawn to her like they were to me?
โBut back then, many of the Atlantians didnโt know that, and when they started Ascending others, they just assumed that I was the same.โ Her eyes were closed. โMalec told me his plans. That he would pretend to side with Eloana and the Council and help eradicate the Ascended. Said that it was the only way. Because you see, he couldnโt let the Ascended continue. He understood their threat better than most did.โ She laughed then, the sound without humor. โEven exiled, he would stay behind and fight because he had honor. But I bet no one speaks of that, do they?โ
Eloana had, in a way. She had said that Malec was a good man and King for the most part. Just not a good husband.
โSo, he snuck me out of Atlantia when the war had just begun, but I had to leave alone. It wouldโve been too risky to bring anyone with me, even our son.โ
My heart turned over as Casteel asked hoarsely, โA son?โ
She nodded. โI had him before I was poisoned, and he wasโฆhe was like you, Penellaphe. A blessing. He was the most beautiful baby boy there ever was. And even as a small child, he had the touch. Theย gift.โ A fine tremor ran through her. โMalec would find me. He promised that once he was able to leave, he would. He would keep our son safe and bring him to me, and we would simply spend an eternity togetherโjust the three of us, no Crown and no kingdom. He promised to take us to Iliseeum.โ
Her eyes opened, and theyโฆthey glistened with tears. โYears went by, and the war spread across the lands. I had toโฆI had to hide what I was. With my dark eyes, the other Ascended never questioned what I was, so I hid from the daylight and stayed among the Ascended, still believing that Malec would come for me. I never lost faith. I met many who sheltered me, and it was Jalara of Vodina Isles who I discovered would be gathering his forces outside of Pompay, where a sizable Atlantian force had gathered. I knew that was my chance to learn whatโd happened to Malec and my son.โ Her nostrils flared. โHe wouldโve been on the cusp of manhood by then, and he probably wouldnโt have recognized me, but I didnโt care. I knew I would help him remember.โ
She came down a step. โSo, I joined Jalara at Pompay, and you know what I saw? The newly crowned King Valyn DaโNeer, leading the Atlantian army. And I knew.โ Her hands closed into fists as her voice quavered. โI knew then that my son was gone. That he had probably been gone since the moment I left Atlantia, and they wouldโve only been able to get to him if theyโd done something to Malec. For years, I waited for them, never giving up, and they took that from me! He was all I ever wanted,โ she screamed, and I shuddered at her words. Her chest strained the gown as she inhaled deeply. โThey tookย everythingย from me. Myย son. My Malec, and I did nothing wrong but love, and gods, I willย neverย love like that again. That was all. That was it.โ She sliced her hand through the air. โThey couldโve stopped this at any point. They just had to tell the truth about Malec and I. That I was not a vampry. That he was exiled wrongly. But in doing that, theyโd have to confess whatย theyโdย done. Tell all their lies. Admit to murderingย children,โ she hissed, and I flinched then because IโฆI knew that they had. โAnd they would have to give back the Crown if that was what Malec wanted. So, of course, they didnโt. And here we are,โ she said quietly. โAll of this?โ She lifted her hands and spread her arms wide. โAll of this is because of them. They created this fire and fanned it, and now itโs out of control because I am the fire, and I will take everything from them.โ
From them.
Not Atlantia.
Not even them, really. Fromย her, was what she meant. From Eloana.
The breath I took lodged in my throat. The liesโฆ So many damn lies soaked in blood. Both kingdoms were at fault for this mess.
Both Queens.
โAll of this for revenge?โ I whispered. โYouโve created this kingdom of blood and lies for revenge?โ
โIn the beginning, yes, but itโs so much bigger than that now. Now, itโs more than me.โ Isbethโs eyes met mine. My motherโs eyes met mine. โYou were going to take it all back for me. Youโd marry Malik, and through you, I would seize Atlantia.โ
I shuddered. โThatโs why you made me the Maiden? Was there even another Maiden?โ
โThat doesnโt matter,โ she said, pressing her hands together. โYou had to be protected. That was how I kept you safe until it was time.โ
โTime to marry a man youโve kept prisoner for how many years?โ I exclaimed.
โDoes he look like a prisoner to you?โ Queen Isbeth looked to where Malik stood beside the Revenant.
โI know what you did to Casteel. I am not foolish or naรฏve enough to be convinced that you didnโt do the same thing to Malik,โ I said, voice low as I stepped in front of Casteel as if I could shield him from the words Iโd just spoken. โNo matter what either of you claim, and I am sorry, gods, I cannot believe Iโm even saying this, but I am sorry for what was done to you and your son.โ
โWho wouldโve been your brother,โ she said, eyes widening.
โHeย is my brother.โ I pointed at Ian. โHe is my brother,โ I repeated. โWhat was done to you was wrong. What was done to your son was horrible.โ
โIt was,โ she murmured. โIt truly was.โ
โBut you are no better,โ I said. โWhat youโve done to children? To those given to the Temples that donโt have this Revenant trait. What about the ones who died of the wasting sicknessesโthose fed on by vamprys that you helped create? What of the second sons and daughters that you conned into believing that the Ascension was an act bestowed on them by the gods? What about the people of Solis, who live in fear of the gods who arenโt even asleep? Who can barely fend for their families while being forced to give their children away? What about the Craven,ย Isbeth?โ I demanded. โWhat about me? Iโm your daughter, and you sent me off to live with a man whose favorite pastime was whipping me and humiliating me.โ
Her chin lifted on a sharp inhale. โI didnโt know about that. I wouldโve flayed the skin from his body and left him alive to be eaten by buzzards if I
had known.โ
โThat doesnโt matter!โ I shouted, tears clouding my eyes because this
โall of this was so messed up. So wrong. โYou canโt blame Eloana or Valyn or Atlantia for anything else. This was you. All you. You became this.โ
Casteel side-stepped me then, forcing me back until I felt Kieranโs hands on my shoulders. โI think itโs safe to say that we do not agree to your terms.โ
โYou donโt really have that authority, do you?โ Queen Isbeth said, her lips thinning. โI know what she is. She is the true ruler of Atlantia. Youโre just a pretty accessory.โ
โOh, Iโm pretty, all right.โ Casteelโs chin dipped. โAnd Iโm also a very deadly accessory. Donโt forget that.โ
The Blood Queen smirked. โI havenโt. Trust me.โ
Sickened by the knowledgeโby the implications and the reality of whatโฆwhat my mother had done to Casteelโto so many peopleโI nearly doubled over. โNo,โ I forced out. โNo, we do not now, nor will we ever agree to your demands.โ
โYou wonโt like what happens if you refuse me,โ she said softly. โDonโt do this, Penellaphe. Give me what I want and end this.โ
โHow will giving you Atlantia end this?โ I asked, genuinely curious. โWould it mean you will stop the Ascended from feeding on innocents? Will you stop the Rite? How will giving you Atlantia change what you did to them?โ
Dark eyes met mine. โIt wonโt, but youโre not in a position to negotiate.โ She shook her head. โI canโt believe youโre making me do this.โ
โIโm not making you do anything.โ
โBut you are.โ Queen Isbethโs shoulders went back as her gaze remained fixed on mine. โKill him.โ
My entire body jerked as I reached out to grab Casteel because she had to be talking about him, but no guard or knight moved toward us. Neither did the Revenant. I scanned the roomโ
Casteel shouted. โNo!โ
I locked eyes with Ian. A knight had stalked up behind him, sword already unsheathed. The knight was fast, sweeping the blade through the air and then slicing it through tissue, muscle, and bone. Ending life.
