REAL LIFE
Friday
โYOU KNEW?โย Iย say.
She doesnโt reply. โSabrina,โ I snap.
She throws her arms out to her sides. โOf course I knew! Not that I heard it from you. Not like my best friends tell me a single thing about their lives these days.โ
Itโs like missing the top step, only to realize the stairs lead directly to the edge of a cliff.
I get out, โHow?โ
โParth visited Wyn a few weeks ago.โ
The harbor starts to swirl around me. โDid he . . . tell him?โ
โNo.โ She crosses her arms. โWyn went to the bathroom, and Parth was going to send you a picture of himself or something from Wynโs phone. Only when he opened your text thread, there was nothing new forย months. And I guess Wyn had this whole long message drafted, apologizing for how things ended.โ
โSo he read it,โ I say, the words bitter on the back of my tongue.
โIt wasnโt intentional,โ Sabrina says. โAnd not the whole thing. But enough to know what happened.โ
โWhy didnโt you say anything?โ I say.
โMe? Youโre the one who hid this, Harry. For months youโve told me almost nothing about your life, and meanwhile Cleo cancels every set of plans she makes, and Wyn wasnโt even going toย comeย this week until I begged, andโโ
โWait.โ I close my eyes, shake my head. It canโt be.
It has to be.
โThatโs what this is all about?โ I open my eyes, lungs compressing. โThis whole trip?โ
Sabrinaโs shoulders square, her chin rising.
I think of all the moments Sabrina shoved Wyn and me together. I think of all the times she weaseled out of even a few minutes alone with me. Even on the drive from the airport, she had the music blasting and windows down so that even ifย Iโdย wanted to tell her about Wyn,ย sheย could plausibly deny hearing it.
The anger floods me now. Anger like Iโve never felt. โThis trip down memory lane? The bathroom with no fucking door? This was allโall some game to you?โ
โAย game?โ she says. โHarriet, we were trying toย helpย you. You and Wyn belong together.โ
โHow could you put us through all of this?โ My vocal cords are shivering from anger.
Sabrinaโs eyes flare, but her mouth jams shut.
โYou made us bend over backward all week. Youย torturedย us,โ I say. โHow could you all do this?โ
โWe didnโt know,โ comes a quiet voice.
Cleo has followed us, the light from the Hound & Thistle limning her in red gold. โDidnโt know you and Wyn broke up,โ she says. โDidnโt know this whole week was a sham.โ
โItโs not aย sham,โ Sabrina says. โWe wereย helpingย them.โ โHelping us doย what?โ I say raggedly.
โGet back together!โ she replies.
โIf we wanted to be together,โ I say, โweโd be together!โ
โOh, please,โ she says. โYou donโt knowย whatย you want, Harriet! Youโreย losingย the love of your life because youโre too indecisive to just pick a wedding date and a venue.โ
White-hot hurt blazes out from my chest. โWeโre not together because we donโt want to be, Sabrina! Because we canโt make each other happy, no matter how badly we want to.โ
โReally?โ she says. โBecause Parthย sawย what Wyn wrote, and it sure sounds like, once again, you sat there and let your life happen to you instead of fighting for what you want.โ
โYou donโt get to decide whatโs best for everyone,โ Cleo says. โIt doesnโt matter how good you think your intentions were. You manipulated us. Youย knewย how stressed out I was about this week, and youย knewย why Wyn wasnโt coming, and you forced us all into it anyway.โ
โI did what I had to,โ Sabrina says. โJust like I always do, because no one makes even the tiniest bit of effort anymore. If I waited on all of you, this friendship would already be over, and you know it. I send the first text. I make the phone calls. I leave the voicemails. I schedule the trips, and when you cancel on them, I pitch other dates, and when you canโt give me an immediate yes or no, guess what?ย Iโmย the one to check back in a couple days later.โ
โWe have other things going on in our lives,โ Cleo says. โWe canโt always drop everything to relive the glory days with you.โ
Instantly, I can tell from Sabrinaโs expression that Cleoโs hit a nerve, a deep one.
All my virulent anger breaks, a fog clearing enough to reveal a steep drop-off ahead. The angerโs still there, but the fear is heavier, rooting through me, yelling,ย Stop, stop, stop this, before it gets any worse.ย Stop this before someone leaves. Before you lose them.
โLetโs all cool off for a second,โ I choke out.
Cleoโs eyes lock on to me. โIโm not angry,โ she says evenly.
She means it. Thereโs no fire behind her gaze, only exhaustion, only disappointment. โIโm just not pretending anymore.โ
The sidewalk seems to crack underneath me, the world splitting. If I donโt do something, the gap will yawn wider and wider until I canโt reach them. Until Iโm all alone.
โNot pretendingย what?โ Sabrina asks.
โThat theseย areย the glory days,โ Cleo says. โThat weโre as close as we used to be, when the truth is, itโs different.ย Weโreย different.โ
โCleo,โ I say, quiet, pleading.
โOur lives are total opposites,โ she goes on, โand our schedules are totally different, and we donโt like spending our free time the same way anymore, and Wynโs out in Montana, and Harrietโs all but cut us out of her life, and you and Parth still want everything to be one big party, but itโs not! Thereโs real shit going on in our lives, and we never talk about any of it.โ
โI havenโt cut you out of my life,โ I say. โWe kept something from you that was so painful I havenโt been able to make myself tellย anyoneย about it. I can still hardly think about itโaboutย himโwithout feeling like . . . like the worldโs coming apart at the seams.โ
Cleoโs eyes are dark and glossy. โWeโre exactly who youโre supposed to come to when you feel like that, and instead you stop talking to us, and then when things are . . . are hard for us, what are we supposed to do?โ
โOh, come on, Cleo,โ Sabrina says. โDonโt act like youโre any better. Youโve been dodging plans with me forย months. As far asย Iย can tell,ย Iโmย the only one trying to hold all this together, while everyone else would be totally fine never seeing one another.โ
โWeโve seen one another allย week,โ Cleo says, โand youโre just now telling us this was all some kind of Machiavellian scheme, and Harrietโs just confessing she and Wyn arenโt even together, and weโve hadย days, and it hasnโt even mattered. Because youโd rather sit in a theater for five hours, just because weย used to, than adjust to the fact that maybe weโd all rather do something different! Weโre not in the same place anymore. Weโre growing up.โ
Her voice wavers. โAnd in different directions. And there are things we canโt talk to one another about anymore, and maybe weโve all been fighting
it, or pretending we donโt notice, when we should accept it. Weโre not what we used to be for one another. And thatโs fine.โ
โItโs fine?โ Sabrina repeats emptily.
โThings are changing. They already have. And Iโve never been this person who just goes along with things she doesnโt want to do, but youโve made it so I have to. It all has to be on your terms.โ
โNo oneโs forcing you to stay!โ Sabrina says. โIf you want to go, go!โ
Cleo looks down at her feet, a tiny fern growing up between the cracks in the sidewalk there, right between her sandals. โFine,โ she says. โKimmy and I will find a hotel for the night.โ
Another cold laugh from Sabrina. โSo, what, youโre going toย consciously uncoupleย from our friendship?โ
โIโm going to take someย space,โ Cleo says.
โThis is ridiculous,โ Sabrina replies. โYou wonโt find anywhere to stay on this entire coast.โ
Cleoโs lips press tighter. โThen weโll sleep in the guesthouse tonight.โ โAnd then what?โ Sabrina says.
โI donโt know yet,โ Cleo said. โMaybe leave.โ
I have no idea how to argue with her, or if I even want to. My head throbs. Everything is all wrong.
Finally, Sabrina says, โIโll get the car.โ She turns and stalks down the street. I look back the way we came. Even in silhouette, Kimmy, Wyn, and Parth look rigid. They heard everything.
In a way, I tell myself, itโs a relief, to have everything out in the open.
But the truth is, if I could take it all back, I would. Iโd do anything to go back to that happy place, outside of time, where nothing from real life can touch us.
