Chapter no 4 – โ€œYOUโ€™RE NOT STAYING HERE.โ€

Things We Never Got Over (Knockemout, #1)

Naomi

โ€œYou must be Naomi,โ€ the cop said.

I might have been mid-panic attack, but I kind of liked the way he said my name in a friendly drawl.

Knox apparently didย notย like it because he was suddenly placing his muscled bulk directly in front of me, feet planted wide, arms crossed.

โ€œI am,โ€ I said, peering around Knox. The oaf didnโ€™t budge when I nudged him in the back.

The man looked back to Knox, and whatever he saw there had him grinning.

โ€œIโ€™m chief of police around here, but you can call me Nash. Itโ€™s real nice to meet you, Naomi. Sorry itโ€™s under these circumstances. Mind if I ask you a few questions?โ€

โ€œUm. Okay,โ€ I said, suddenly wishing I would have taken a moment to wash my face and fix my hair. I probably looked like a deranged, zombie bridesmaid.

โ€œWhy donโ€™t we have ourselves a chat out in the parking lot,โ€ Nash said with a jerk of his head.

Waylayโ€™s attention was back on the movie as she sipped lime green sugar.

โ€œSure.โ€ I followed him out and was surprised when Knox joined us. He headed right over to Nashโ€™s SUV, which read Knockemout Police down the side, and leaned belligerently against the hood.

โ€œYouโ€™re not necessary for this part,โ€ Nash told him.

Knox bared his teeth. โ€œYou want me to leave, gonna have to make me.โ€ โ€œIโ€™m sorry. Heโ€™s been like this all morning,โ€ I explained to Nash. โ€œHoney, heโ€™s been like this his entire life,โ€ the chief countered.

It didnโ€™t hit me until they turned identical glares on each other. โ€œYouโ€™re brothers, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œNo shit,โ€ Knox grumbled.

โ€œSure are,โ€ Nash said, turning his full wattage grin on me. โ€œIโ€™m the good one.โ€

โ€œJust do your fucking job,โ€ Knox said.

โ€œOh, now you want me to do my job. You can see how Iโ€™d be confused sinceโ€”โ€

โ€œGentlemen,โ€ I cut in. This was going nowhere fast. I didnโ€™t have the energy to diffuse the tension between the brothers, and we had more important concerns. โ€œI donโ€™t mean to overstep. But can we get to the part about my sister?โ€ I suggested.

โ€œI think thatโ€™s a fine idea, Naomi,โ€ Nash said, winking as he pulled out a notebook.

Knox growled.

โ€œLetโ€™s get your statement, and then weโ€™ll figure out what needs to happen next.โ€

A man with a plan and a smile. He was certainly more pleasant than his brother.

โ€œYOUโ€™RE SAYINGย I can just take possession of a human being?โ€ I clarified a few minutes later. I really needed more coffee. My cognitive abilities were fading fast.

โ€œWell, I wouldnโ€™t advise on referring to it as โ€˜taking possession.โ€™ But in Virginia, kinship care is a way for kids to stay with a family member as guardian when they canโ€™t be with their own parents.โ€

I might have been imagining it, but I thought I saw a guarded look pass between the brothers.

โ€œSo I would become Waylayโ€™s guardian?โ€

Things were moving so fast. One second, I was getting ready to walk down the aisle. The next, I was suddenly in charge of deciding the future of

an eleven-year-old stranger.

Nash swept a hand through his thick hair. โ€œTemporarily. Youโ€™re obviously a stable, healthy adult.

โ€œWhat happens if I donโ€™t?โ€ I hedged.

โ€œJuvenile and Domestic Relations will place Waylay in a foster home. If youโ€™ve got no problems staying in town for a few weeks while we figure things out, the lawโ€™s got no issue with Waylay staying with you. If things work out, you can even make it permanent.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€ I nervously wiped my hands on the back of my shorts. โ€œWhat things are we going to be figuring out?โ€ I asked.

โ€œMainly what your sister is up to and what that means for guardianship.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m in big trouble. I need money, Naomi.โ€

I bit my lip. โ€œShe called me last night. Said she needed help and wanted me to bring cash. Do you think sheโ€™s in actual danger?โ€

โ€œHow about this? You focus on Waylay and let me worry about your sister,โ€ Nash advised.

I appreciated the theory, but in my experience the only way to make sure a mess was cleaned to my satisfaction was to do the cleaning myself.

โ€œDid you bring cash?โ€ Knox asked, his eyes on me.

I looked down at my feet, feeling stupid and embarrassed. I knew better. โ€œI did.โ€

โ€œShe get it?โ€

I focused on Nashโ€™s face since it was friendlier. โ€œI thought I was being smart. I had half of it in the car and left the other half in my suitcase.โ€

Nash looked sympathetic. Knox, on the other hand, grumbled something under his breath.

โ€œWell, I guess Iโ€™d better get back in there and introduce myself properly to my niece,โ€ I said. โ€œPlease keep me posted.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not staying here.โ€

This proclamation came from Knox.

I threw my hands up. โ€œIf my presence bothers you that much, why donโ€™t you take an extended vacation?โ€

If looks could boil blood, mine would have turned to magma.

โ€œYouโ€™reย notย staying here,โ€ he repeated. This time he pointed to the flimsy door with the busted lock.

Oh. That.

โ€œIโ€™m sure I can come up with a solution,โ€ I said brightly. โ€œChiefโ€”โ€ โ€œCall me Nash,โ€ he insisted again.

Knox looked like he wanted to shove his brotherโ€™s head through the already damaged door.

โ€œNash,โ€ I said, turning up the charm. โ€œDo you know where Waylay and I could stay for a few nights?โ€

Knox pulled out his phone and glowered at the screen as his thumbs moved aggressively over it.

โ€œI could give you two a ride to Tinaโ€™s place. Itโ€™s not exactly homey, but sheโ€™s a lot less likely to break in and bust up her own stuff,โ€ he offered.

Knox stowed his phone in his pocket. His gaze fastened on me, and there was something smug about his expression that made me irrationally irritated.

โ€œThat is so nice of you. I canโ€™t tell you how much I appreciate your help,โ€ I told Nash. โ€œIโ€™m sure Knox has much better things to do than spend any more time in my vicinity.โ€

โ€œMy pleasure,โ€ Nash insisted.

โ€œIโ€™ll just pack up whatโ€™s left of my things and tell Waylay where weโ€™re going,โ€ I decided and started back to the room.

My relief at finally being free of the bad-tempered, tattooed Knox was interrupted by a thunderous rumble.

A motorcycle with a man the size of a bear prior to hibernation rocketed down the street at a speed that was definitely not the legal speed limit.

โ€œGod damn that Harvey,โ€ Nash muttered.

โ€œGuess you better go get โ€™em,โ€ Knox said, still looking smug.

Nash jabbed a finger in his brotherโ€™s direction. โ€œYou and me are gonna talk later,โ€ he promised, looking none too happy.

โ€œBetter hurry and uphold that law,โ€ Knox said.

Nash turned back to me. โ€œNaomi, sorry to leave you in a lurch. Iโ€™ll be in touch.โ€

Knox wiggled his fingers antagonistically as his brother hustled back to his SUV and took up pursuit with lights flashing.

Once again, I was left alone with Knox. โ€œYou didnโ€™t have something to do with my nice, polite ride disappearing, did you?โ€

โ€œNow why would I do that?โ€

โ€œWell, it sure as hell isnโ€™t to spend more quality time with me.โ€

โ€œCome on, Daisy,โ€ he said. โ€œLetโ€™s pack your shit. Iโ€™ll take you and Way to Tinaโ€™s.โ€

โ€œIโ€™d prefer if you kept your hands off my shit,โ€ I said haughtily. The effect was ruined by my unladylike yawn. I was running on fumes and only hoped I could hold on long enough to get away from the Viking before I crashed.
