Chapter no 30 – GATHERING STORM

Golden Son (Red Rising Book 2)

โ€œHow long till we reach the rendezvous?โ€ I ask Orion on the command deck. Except for our attendants, we are alone in front of the viewports of theย Pax, watching my ships cross through space. The newest additions to our fledgling armada are painted white and carry Lornโ€™s angry-faced purple gri n. With them fly the black and blue and silver warships captured from Kellan au Bellona above Europa. Oranges and Reds crawl over the exteriors of the metal monsters, mending the holes made by leechCraft and preparing them for the siege of Mars.

โ€œThree days till Hildas Station. The other ships will have beaten us there,ย dominus.โ€

Kavax and Daxo approach from behind. I turn to them and gesture out the repaired windows to the ten ships of Kellan au Bellona.

โ€œThank you for the presents,โ€ I say. โ€œYour plan, your spoils,โ€ Kavax declares.

โ€œWith us taking a percentage, naturally,โ€ Daxo adds, smooth as ever, raising his swirling golden eyebrows. โ€œFifty percent finderโ€™s fee.โ€ I glance at him with amusement. โ€œWell, thirty percent, because Pax liked you.โ€

โ€œTen percent!โ€ Kavax booms.

I cock my head. โ€œYouโ€™re a poor negotiator, Praetor.โ€

He shrugs amiably and points in joy to jelly beans on the ground. He tosses Sophocles down, encouraging him to vanquish them all.

โ€œTwenty.โ€ Daxo splays his hands, movements always seeming to belong to a thinner, more bookish man. โ€œThat is fair, no? We lost a hundred and sixty house Grays and thirteen Obsidians.โ€

โ€œThen thirty percent to compensate you. For friends.โ€

โ€œThree ships! What a haggle!โ€ Kavax proclaims. โ€œWhat a haggle. Sometimes a man needs a good haggle.โ€ He claps me on the back, making the joints crack again. โ€œIf only we had caught Aja. Thatโ€™d be a spoil to divide!โ€

โ€œShe fled into the sea, unfortunately.โ€ I gesture to Ragnar, who stands at the edge of the bridge. โ€œHeard he did well.โ€ Pale and tall, he continues looking at me from behind his beard and runic tattoos, appearing as devoid of emotions as Kavax and Daxo are full of them.

โ€œThe leader of his boarding party was killed. So were the lieutenants. Lots of heads smashed. They ran into some of Kellanโ€™s friends,โ€ Kavax says dourly as he rummages through his pockets for his impatient fox, who clawed at his leg for more jelly beans.ย โ€œI donโ€™t have any more, my little prince.โ€ย He smiles up at me hopefully. โ€œDo you have any jelly beans?โ€

โ€œNo. Sorry.โ€

โ€œRagnar there took command. Did himself well,โ€ Daxo says. โ€œTook command?โ€ I ask.

Kavax explains. โ€œThere was a kill squad of Peerless. Half a dozen Bellona blade dancers, real noble boys, carved up all our Golds and most of the Obsidians. The Stained there collected the surviving Grays and a few Obsidians and managed to get the ship.โ€

โ€œAny of these blade dancers survive?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

Ragnar looks at the ground again, as if expecting a reprimand. โ€œWell done, my goodman,โ€ I say instead.

Both Kavax and Daxo squint at the familiarity.

Worth it to see Ragnar surprise me with a smile. A broad, yellowtoothed grin.

โ€œDo you think he could do more?โ€ I ask. Daxo hesitates. โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€ โ€œCould he lead absent a Gold?โ€

Daxo and Kavax share a worried glance. โ€œWhat would be the benefit in that?โ€ Daxo asks.

โ€œI could send him places I could not send Golds.โ€

โ€œThere is no such place.โ€ Kavax crosses his arms. I go too far.

I smile to placate them. โ€œOf course. tust a theory. The mind wanders from time to time.โ€ I clap Kavax on the shoulder and they depart together for their own ship.

โ€œYou overstepped,โ€ Orion says. โ€œI beg your pardon?โ€

โ€œYou have ears.โ€

I look down, searching the pale blue tattoos on her dark skin as if the math there holds the key to understanding her mind. โ€œYouโ€™re observant for a Blue.โ€

โ€œBecause I know how the world works outside my digital sync? Comes from working the docks,ย dominus. When youโ€™re at the bottom, you have to notice everything.โ€

โ€œWhich docks?โ€ I ask.

โ€œPhobos. Father was a Docker, born outside the Sects. Died when I was small. A young girl has to be on her toes if she wants to grow big in the Hive dock cities. Itโ€™s the only way to beat the monsters.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not the only way,โ€ I say. โ€œNo?โ€ she asks, surprised.

โ€œYou can always become a monster too.โ€

Orion turns from the viewport to look up at me. Fierce intelligence burns behind her arctic eyes. โ€œAnd thereโ€™s the beauty of space. A billion paths to choose.โ€

Iโ€™m spared from replying when the comBlue calls from the pit. โ€œDominus, weโ€™ve an assault shuttle inbound. Itโ€™s Virginia au

Augustus.โ€
