The field Iโd seen the Guardians training in was littered with cots occupied by the injured and the dead. Most were mortal. Twenty Descenters or those of Atlantian descent that had settled in Spessaโs End had perished. At least fifty of Atlantian descent whoโd arrived with the army had died, and double that occupied the cots. A dozen or so wolven were injured beyond their capabilities to heal themselves. The elemental Atlantians that had made up the vast majority of the army had healed themselves. None of the Guardians had fallen, and only a few were among the injured.
The Atlantian army had been successful, though, even with the casualties. Theyโd seized control by the time Casteel and I stepped out of the carriage to find Kieran and several Atlantian warriors standing guard.
I couldnโt even muster an ounce of embarrassment at the knowledge that some realized what had happened inside the carriage.
Only one soldier in the entirety of the Solis army had been left alive. Casteel and a few others had left hours ago, escorting a young boy barely beyond the cusp of manhood to the scorched land of Pompay, charged with the task of relaying a warning.
And a message.
Atlantia had reclaimed Spessaโs End, and any who came for the town would meet the same fate as those before them. The message was also an opportunity. Casteel had initiated a part of his original plan. The Battle of Spessaโs End didnโt have to be the first of many to come. The Prince andย Princessย of Atlantia were willing to meet with the King and Queen of Solis to discuss the kingdomsโ futures.
I didnโt envy the boy who was tasked with delivering the message.
And I didnโt envy any of the family and friends of those who had lost loved ones. Each time I saw someone I knew standing, Iโd been overcome with relief.
โThank you,โ a raspy voice drew my attention. An older wolven had taken a nasty blow to the arm, nearly severing it. He was the last one to be
checked. Iโd healed him. Like Iโd healed all of those whoโd allowed me to try.
Some had refused my touch, like those in New Haven had. My chest squeezed painfully as Elijahโs image took form in my mind.
I cleared my throat. โYouโre welcome.โ Back and arms aching, I started to rise. โI donโt know if your arm is completely healed, so you should have a Healer look at it as soon as possible.โ
The wolven caught my left arm before I could move. His eyes widened slightly at the contact, and I wondered if heโd felt the strange, electric-like current that others had when he touched me. He slowly turned my hand over. โItโs true, then?โ he asked, looking at the golden swirl across my palm. โYouโve married our Prince?โ
I nodded as my heart skipped. This middle-aged wolven, with his head of ropey black-and-silver dreads had been the first to ask.
โOthers are saying you fought beside him the entire battle.โ โI started on the Rise, but I did go down.โ
โAnd yet, youโre here. Youโve been here this whole time, healing others,โ he said, his pale eyes sharp. โWith your touch.โ
โHow could I not when I can help?โ And I had helped. Talia the Healer Iโd caught a brief glimpse of, had her hands full with those who refused my aid. So, after the battle, I had taken the time to wash the blood from my face and hands, even though it was still caked to my clothing and dried under my fingernails.
He nodded as he let go of my wrist and laid his head back on the cot. โKieran said you were of the empath bloodline.โ
I nodded again.
โIโve never seen an empath glow silver before,โ he said. โAnd I remember them. I was a young boy then, and there was only a handful still alive, but Iโd remember something like that.โ
Wondering how old this wolven was, I said, โJasper said the same.โ โNot surprised to hear that. He knows things,โ the wolven said.
โExcept when to keep his mouth closed.
I smiled wearily. โThatโs what I hear.โ
โYou must be descended from an old empath line.โ
โWhat else could I be?โ I asked, not really expecting an answer. โYes,โ he murmured. โWhat else?โ
I looked over my shoulder, spotting Quentyn and Beckett moving among the injured and recovering. โWater and food are being brought. Is there anything else you need?โ
โNo.โ The wolven eyed me as I stood. โBut you should be careful, Princess.โ
I stilled.
โIโve watched the others watching you. Our Prince may have chosen you. You may have fought beside him and for them. You may have healed many of us,โ he said with a voice full of gravel. โBut they didnโt choose you, and many arenโt old enough to even remember the empath bloodlines. Those who are, remember what they could doโwhat they were called.โ
โSoul Eaters? I canโt do that,โ I said, even as my heart started pumping. โI canโt drain a person of emotion.โ
โBut they donโt know that.โ His gaze shifted to the cots. โIs there someone here? To watch over you?โ He started to sit up. โYou shouldnโt be out here alone with the Princeโโ
โIโm fine.โ Gently, I pressed him onto his back. โIโm armed and can take care of myself.โ
โI donโt doubt that, butโโ His features tightened, almost as if he were in pain, but I knew he wasnโt. โI shouldnโt say this. Itโs damn near treasonous, but you healed me. I owe you.โ
โYou donโt owe me.โ
โIt wouldโve taken days, maybe even longer for me to heal that wound, and that is if I kept my arm. Iโm a wolven, Princess. That does not mean I can grow back limbs.โ
I glanced at the pale pink mark that nearly encircled the entirety of his biceps. The gods had to have favored him to keep that limb attached after that kind of injury.
โItโs pretty well known among the armies that once the King knew of the Princeโs plans to capture you, he began to make his own plans. I doubt he knows how much the Princeโs plans have changed, but his have not.โ
A heaviness sat on my shoulders. โHe plans to use me to send a message. I doubt I would be a message that was alive and breathing,โ I said. โI know.โ
โThen you should also know that Casteel is our Prince,โ the wolven said in a low voice. โBut Valyn, his father, is our King.โ
โI know,โ I repeated, fixing a smile on my face.
โDo you?โ
The heaviness intensified as I nodded again. โYou should rest. At least until Talia can confirm youโre healed.โ
The older wolven relented, unhappily, but with one last goodbye, I roamed the edges of the makeshift infirmary, scanning the field and the banners embossed with the Atlantian Crest.
I could feel eyes on me.
Iโd felt them the entire time I moved through the field.
But with all the pain that had been echoing around me, I hadnโt allowed myself to sense anything beyond the agony.
But they didnโt choose you.
I flinched as the wolvenโs words played over and over in my head as I turned away from the field.
What the wolven had said about the King and the veiled warning hinting at where the Atlantian peopleโs loyalty lay didnโt come as much of a shock.
In the back of my mind, Iโd already figured as much, hadnโt I? And that was before they heard Duchess Teermanโs ridiculous claims that I was Queen Ileanaโs granddaughter. The Queen was an Ascended. I was not of her blood nor born of flesh and fireโwhatever that meant.
But I wasnโt like other empaths, and even so, that bloodline sounded more feared than respected. I knew I wouldnโt have many supporters in Atlantia. I barely had them here.
Casteel was the Prince of Atlantia, well-loved and respected. That much was obvious. But not a single person spoke ill of his father or mother, and I knew they were just as loved as he was. Casteel was the Prince, but his father was the King, and if he wanted me dead to send a message, his people would follow his lead. I didnโt know if a ring or marriage imprint would change that when me fighting and killing to protect the people of Atlantia hadnโt.
And Casteelโฆhe had to know that. He always had to know that.
Sitting in the tub of warm soapy water, I had my arms locked around my legs, my knees pressed to my chest and my eyes closed. I recalled the warm sand under my feet, and the weight of my motherโs and fatherโs hands
in mine. I remembered how easy Ianโs smile was as he ran ahead, and the sound of my motherโs laugh and the way my father stared at her likeโฆ
Like it was the most beautiful sound heโd ever heard.
The corners of my lips curved up. Thinking of those moments had eased the coldness that returned when I walked back to the fortress. What the Duchess had said and thoughts of Tawny haunted me, just like I knew they would. Along with worries about the Kingโs plans and the loyalty of the Atlantian people.
I opened my eyes at the soft click of the bathing chamber door. The scent of rich, earthy spice, and crisp pine enveloped the soapโs lemony scent as Casteel knelt beside me. The strands of his hair were damp, and the clothing he wore was clean and free of blood. When and where heโd cleaned up, I had no idea. I hadnโt seen him since he left with the young Solis soldier.
โHey,โ he said quietly, his gaze roaming over my face, lingering on a bruise Iโd gained in the battle.
โHi,โ I whispered.
One side of his lips curled up, and I felt my cheeks warm. I cleared my throat. โIs everything okay? With the soldier?โ
He nodded. โHeโs on his way to Whitebridge.โ Reaching over, he gathered up several strands of my wet hair and draped it over my shoulder. He bared the bite mark on my throat, and I swore his grin deepened. โI hear I owe you a thank you.โ
I held my legs tighter. โFor what?โ
โYou spent the entire day healing those you could and easing the pain of those you couldnโt.โ Those twin amber jewels met mine. โThank you.โ
I swallowed. โI only did what I couldโwhat anyone with my abilities would do.โ At least, thatโs what I hoped. โSome of them wouldnโt let me.โ
His fingers trailed over the damp skin of my back. โSome of them are idiots.โ
โThey are your people.โ
โOurย people,โ he corrected softly.
My breath caught, and a bit of panic and unease sparked at the realization that they were my people whether they liked it or not. โIโmโฆIโm sorry about Elijah and all of them. I liked him, and Magda was nice. But theyโฆthey were your friends.โ
His lashes lowered as he exhaled raggedly. โIโve known Elijah since he was a boy, and I know how crazy that sounds since I look younger than him. He knew the risks, and I know he fought back. I know all of them did, but he didnโt deserve that. None of them did.โ
โNo, they didnโt,โ I agreed softly.
โI shouldโve made them all leave. Risked drawing the attention. I shouldโveโโ
โYou did what you could. Some of those people couldnโt travel because of their injuries, and none of them were ready to leave immediately,โ I argued. โWhat happened there isnโt your fault.โ
Casteel said nothing.
โYou know that, right? That was the Ascended. They are responsible.
Not you.โ
He nodded slowly. โI know that.โ โDo you?โ
Swallowing, he nodded, and I wasnโt sure if that was the case. โI was told something odd earlier, when I returned to Spessaโs End.โ
โIโm half afraid to ask.โ
There was a brief grin. โYou remember when the wolven showed up during the battle?โ
โHow could I forget that?โ
โGlad you havenโt because that was when you had a knife to your throatโโ
โI was trying to save you and the people,โ I reminded him. โWeโve already covered this.โ
โWe did, but Kieran told me that he heard you calling him. He said the other wolven felt it, too. That they all veered in our direction. Jasper confirmed it,โ he said. โHe said the same thing.โ
โI didnโt. I mean, how?โ I swallowed. โI was obviously feeling a lot in that moment. I felt like, I donโt know, like I was about to lose control. But how is that even possible?
โI donโt know, Poppy. Iโve never seen anything like that. I donโt know how they couldโve picked up anything from you.โ He tugged on a strand of my wet hair and draped it over my bare shoulder. โNeither do they. I asked them when they came by just now. Both said they felt you calling for them
โcalling for help.โ
Goosebumps broke out over my skin. โDelano. Oh, my godsโฆ.โ
โWhat?โ
โWhen we were in New Haven and I was kept in the room, he burst inside at one point, swearing he heard me calling for him. But I hadnโt.โ
Casteelโs brows slashed over his eyes. โDid something happen at that time? Because if so and I wasnโt told about itโโ
โNothing happened. I was madโmad at you, because I was locked in the room,โ I explained. โHe then said it mustโve been the wind, and itย wasย windy then, so I forgot about it.โ
Casteel lifted another strand of hair. โThatโs bizarre.โ
I stared at him. โThatโs all you have to say to themย feelingย my call?
Thatโs bizarre?โ
โWell, the definition of bizarre is something strange and unusualโโ
โI know what bizarre means,โ I interrupted. โIs that another empath trait manifesting?โ
His gaze met mine. โIโve never heard of an empath being able to do that.โ
My stomach dipped. โJust like glowing silver and being able to heal
โโ
โYou could be of two bloodlines,โ he cut in. โWe talked about that
before. It could be possible.โ
More possible than Queen Ileana being my grandmother. I had no idea what to think of the whole hearing my call thing, but what if that was an empath ability? People could project their pain and fear. What if that was what I was doing, and the wolven, for some reason, picked up on it? That seemed like it made logical sense.
โWhat do we do now?โ I asked.
โRight now? At this very moment?โ His smile was smoke as his gaze traveled over the bare skin he could see, which wasnโt any of the interesting parts. โI have so many ideas.โ
โThatโs not what I was talking about,โ I said, even though I was glad to see the somberness leave his eyes.
โI know, but Iโm distracted. Itโs not my fault. Youโre naked.โ โYou canโt see anything.โ
โWhat I can see is enough.โ He lowered himself to his knees as he rested his arms on the edge of the tub. โSo, Iโm thoroughly distracted.โ
โYou being distracted sounds like your problem and not mine,โ I told
him.
He chuckled as he bent his head, kissing the patch of my knee that wasnโt covered by my arms. โWeโll leave for Atlantia tomorrow. The Atlantian armies that arrived will remain behind just in case the Ascended want to make a very bad life choice. Spessaโs End will be protected.โ
There was a whooshing sensation in my chest. โSo soon?โ
โWe wouldโve already been there if things had gone as planned.โ He leaned back. โWe are married, but you havenโt been crowned yet. That needs to happen.โ
I worried my lower lip. โI get that the crowning makes things official, but what will that really change? Yourโฆโ I briefly closed my eyes. โOur people still donโt trust me or like me. Whatever. And your father still has his plans, right? For me?โ
His brows lowered. โMy fatherโs plans have changed.โ โWhat if they havenโt?โ
He studied me for a moment. โDid someone say something to you?โ
Not wanting to potentially get the older wolven in trouble, I gave a slight shake of my head. โItโs justโฆI know many donโt accept me, even after the marriage and last night. Youโre the Prince and all. But heโs the Kingโโ
โAnd youโre starting to sound like Alastir,โ he interrupted. โIโd almost think he got you all worked up again, but he stayed in Atlantia.โ
โItโs not Alastir,โ I said. โBut he did say that, and he has a point. I know you wanted to marry me partly because it offered me a level of protectionโโ
โOriginally, Poppy. And that was only because Iโd convinced myself that was the reason,โ he stated. โIt wasnโt the only reason. Neither was freeing my brother or preventing a war. I wanted you, and I wanted to find a way to try to keep you.โ
There was a different kind of snag in my chest now in response to his words. โYou have me,โ I whispered the words Iโd said to him in the carriage.
โI know.โ His gaze held mine. โAnd no one, not even my father or my mother, will change that.โ
I believed him.
I really did.
โNo one will harm you,โ he vowed. โI will not allow it.โ โNeither will I.โ
He smiled then, both dimples appearing. โI know. Come.โ Rising, he reached for the towel. โIf you stay in there any longer, you will start to grow fins.โ
โLike a ceeren?โ
A grin appeared. โLike a ceeren.โ
I didnโt move though. โI lied to you.โ Casteel arched a brow. โAbout?โ
โYou asked me if the Duchess had said anything to me before I killed her, and I said no. That was a lie.โ
A heartbeat passed. โWhat did she say?โ
โIโฆI asked her about my brother and yours. She said they were together, but thatโs all she would say about them.โ I watched him return to kneeling beside me. โShe told me that Tawny was going to Ascend without waitingโthat it couldโve already happened. She said that the Queen knew how much I cared for Tawny and wanted her to be there, so when I returned home, I would feel comfortable.โ
โGods.โ Casteel leaned over, cupping the back of my head. โYou donโt know if any of that is true. Any of it, Poppy. Your brother. Mine. Tawny. Sheโโ
โShe said that the Queen will be thrilled when she learns weโve married. That if she knew that had happened, none of what took place last night wouldโve been necessary,โ I told him, and he stilled. โShe told me that I accomplished the one thing the Queen never could. That I took Atlantia.โ
โThat doesnโt make any sense, Poppy.โ
โI know,โ I said. โNeither does what she said about the Queen being my grandmother. It makes no sense at all. Itโs so far out there that, so unbelievable that IโฆI canโt help but wonder if some of it is true.โ
