Chapter no 29

A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire (Blood and Ash Series #2)

Good gods, Iย was.

A silvery glow radiated out from under the sleeves of my tunic.

โ€œYou look like moonlight,โ€ Casteel whispered, and it wasnโ€™t the sunlight reflecting over his cheek. It was me.

The fur thinned under my fingers, replaced by clammy skin as Beckett shifted into his mortal form. I lifted my hands, rocking back on my rear as Vonetta swept forward, draping a blanket she mustโ€™ve grabbed over the boyโ€™s waist. His legsโ€ฆthey were a mottled, angry shade of red and violet, but they were straight and no longer twisted.

Aided by Alastir, Beckett sat up, his pale, sweat-slick face quickly gaining color. Someone was talking. Maybe Casteel asking if he were in pain? Beckett didnโ€™t answer as he stared at me, eyes as wide as saucers.

โ€œAm I still glowing?โ€ My hands werenโ€™t, but maybe my face was?

Because it felt like everyone was staring at me.

Casteel shook his head and then looked down at Beckett. โ€œI thinkโ€ฆI think you healed his legs.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ I glanced down at my handsโ€”at my normal, flesh-toned palms. โ€œI canโ€™t do that.โ€

โ€œBut you did,โ€ Casteel insisted.

Beckett still stared at me. So did Alastir. And Emil. And everyone else. โ€œI canโ€™t,โ€ I repeated.

โ€œCan you move your legs?โ€ Kieran asked, and when Beckett continued to do nothing but stare, the wolven leaned over me and snapped his fingers. โ€œBeckett. Focus. Can you move your legs?โ€

The young wolven blinked as if he were waking up from a spell. He drew his left leg up, wincing, but then extended it with little trouble. Then he repeated it with the right. โ€œIโ€ฆ I can move them. Thereโ€™s pain but nothing like before. Thank you.โ€ Astounded eyes met mine. โ€œI donโ€™t know how to repay you. Thank you.โ€ Before I could tell him there was no need for repayment, he twisted at the waist toward the Prince. โ€œIโ€™m sorry. I didnโ€™t mean for this to happen. Itโ€™s not anyoneโ€™s fault. I wasnโ€™t paying attentionโ€”โ€

โ€œItโ€™s all right.โ€ Casteel placed his hand on the boyโ€™s slim shoulder. โ€œYou donโ€™t need to apologize. Youโ€™re okay, and thatโ€™s all that matters.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€ His eyes glistened as he fought back emotion. โ€œI shouldโ€™ve

โ€”โ€

โ€œYou have nothing to apologize for,โ€ Casteel repeated.

Beckett exhaled roughly as he fisted the blanket lying over him. He

bent his left leg once more, sucking his lip between his teeth. Maybe his legs hadnโ€™t been as injured as we thought they were.

Casteel rocked back as his gaze flicked from me to Alastir. โ€œYou think you can get him to the training fields? You can take one of our horses. I want Talia to look at him.โ€

Alastir blinked, dragging his gaze from me. โ€œOf course.โ€

Sliding an arm under Beckettโ€™s shoulders, Emil helped him stand. He took a tentative step while holding the cloak to his midsection, smiling in relief when his legs held his weight.

โ€œThank you,โ€ Alastir said to me.

I could only nod. โ€œI donโ€™t think he was as badly hurt as we thought.โ€ โ€œYes,โ€ Alastir said, but he didnโ€™t sound like he believed me.

Rising then, Casteel turned to the others. โ€œBeckett will be fine. The Healer will take a look at him.โ€

The people, a mixture of wolven, Atlantian, and mortal nodded, but there was a thickness to the air, and it settled over my skin like a coarse blanket. I didnโ€™t dare look up as Casteel ushered the group away.ย Itย was palpable. The crowdโ€™s emotions. Raw and unfettered. I closed my eyes, trembling with the effort it took to keep my senses locked down, but it was no use. I split open, and the whirl of spinning emotions poured into me. Shock. Confusion. Awe. More shock. Something extremely bitter.ย Fear. Why would anyone fear me?

โ€œPoppy.โ€ Casteel touched my shoulder, jolting me. โ€œAre you all right?โ€

I opened my eyes, letting out a ragged breath of relief when I noticed that it was just himโ€”him and Kieran and Vonetta. I didnโ€™t dare look too far. If I did, I would never be able to close myself down.

โ€œYou really left some pretty big details out when you told me about her,โ€ Vonetta said, and I almost laughed at how annoyed she sounded.

โ€œIโ€ฆI donโ€™t know how that happenedโ€”how I healed him or started glowing.โ€ I craned my neck to look back at Vonetta. โ€œI can relieve peopleโ€™s pain with my touch, but only temporarily.โ€

โ€œAnd you can read emotions,โ€ she said, obviously knowing enough about my bloodline. โ€œYouโ€™re an empath.โ€

I nodded and looked to where Casteel knelt beside me. He was looking over his shoulder to where the others had gone back to the house. โ€œBut Iโ€™ve never done that before,โ€ I said, and Casteel faced me. โ€œI honestly donโ€™t think he was as badly hurt

as we feared.โ€

โ€œHis legs were completely broken,โ€ Vonetta said. โ€œThey were smashed and twisted.โ€

โ€œIโ€ฆโ€ I shook my head. โ€œThatโ€™s impossible.โ€ โ€œItโ€™s really not. The empaths could heal.โ€ โ€œDid they glow?โ€

โ€œNot that I know of,โ€ Vonetta said. โ€œBut they were all gone before I was born.โ€

โ€œIt could be the Culling.โ€ Casteelโ€™s brows knitted as he placed a hand on the grass. โ€œAnd youโ€™re on land that has been reclaimed as Atlantia. Youโ€™re on Atlantian soil. That could impact your abilities.โ€ His eyes met mine. โ€œAnd it could be my blood. What Iโ€™ve given you stays in you.โ€

I leaned forward, keeping my voice low. โ€œYour blood is making me glow?โ€

His lips twitched. โ€œI donโ€™t think my blood is the sole reason why you glowed like moonlight.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not funny,โ€ I snapped. โ€œIโ€™m not laughing.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re trying not to laugh,โ€ I accused. โ€œDonโ€™t even deny it.โ€

Casteel laughed then, holding up his hands. โ€œItโ€™s just you lookโ€ฆ adorably confused, and now you look adorably violent.โ€

I shook my head at him. โ€œThere is something so wrong with you.โ€

He arched a brow and then looked to where Kieran and Vonetta stood. โ€œCan one of you check on Beckett? See how heโ€™s doing?โ€

โ€œOf course,โ€ Kieran answered as I pushed to my feet.

โ€œIโ€™ll go with you,โ€ his sister said, giving me a little wave. โ€œIโ€™m going to have so many questions for you later.โ€

I had many for myself.

I watched them start down the road and then turned to Casteel. Beyond him, I saw that the others had return to repairing the section of the roof that

had fallen. โ€œThey were scared of me. Not all of them but some. I could feel it.โ€

me.

Casteelโ€™s lashes were lowered, shielding his eyes as he looked down at

โ€œRemember Alastir being concerned about what some of the older

Atlantians would think if they realized what bloodline I descended from?โ€ โ€œI do.โ€ He took my hand, leading me to where his horse remained. โ€œDo they think Iโ€™mโ€”what did he say some called the empaths?โ€ โ€œSoul Eaters.โ€

I shuddered at the name, pulling my hand free from his. โ€œIs that what they think I am? That Iโ€™m feeding off pain?โ€ Or their fear couldโ€™ve stemmed from the fact that Iโ€™d literallyย glowed. I would also be concerned if I saw that. โ€œDid you ever think that when you learned that I could ease the pain of others? That I was thisโ€”this Soul Eater thing?โ€

โ€œNot once.โ€ He turned to me again. โ€œSoul Eaters are practically on par with aย lamaeaย at this point. I didnโ€™t even think you were half-Atlantian then, remember?โ€

I searched his face, but there was nothing hidden in his expression or his unflinching gaze. โ€œI donโ€™t know how any of that happened,โ€ I admitted as I turned to Teddy, stroking the horseโ€™s side. โ€œNormally, I have to think about something happy to channel that feeling into others. But this time, all it took was for me to place my hands on Beckett. My skin tingled more than normal, and my hands heated, but that was all that was different.โ€

โ€œWhen was the last time you used your gift in that way?โ€ He caught a piece of my hair, tucking it back.

โ€œIt wasโ€ฆwhen I healed the people in New Haven. That was the last time.โ€

โ€œAnd now youโ€™re technically on Atlantian soil.โ€ He stood beside me, resting his arms on the saddle. Heโ€™d rolled up the sleeves of his shirt, and the dusting of dark hair along his tan forearms seemed scandalous. โ€œI donโ€™t know if itโ€™s that or the Culling, but there could be more changes.โ€

I really hoped those changes didnโ€™t involve glowing any other colors. โ€œMaybe his legs werenโ€™t even brokenโ€”โ€

โ€œHis legs were most definitely broken. You saw them.โ€

I stepped back from the horse, folding my arms over my waist as I stared at the light blue curtains rippling out from the terrace across the street. โ€œYour people already dislike me because I was the Maiden. And now

theyโ€™re going to think Iโ€™m a Soul Eater. I really donโ€™t think marrying me is going to change that.โ€

โ€œThe people just havenโ€™t seen anything like that before. They need time to grow used to it, and they will accept you,โ€ he said. โ€œI do think you should hold off on using your abilities, thoughโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not going to hide.โ€ I met his stare with an equally hard one. โ€œIโ€™m not going to ignore those in painโ€”people I can help. I wonโ€™t do that.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not asking you to hide your abilities.โ€ He drew his arms from the saddle. โ€œAll Iโ€™m asking is that you hold off until we understand more. Use your abilities when there isnโ€™t a crowd to witness it. That way, we control the narrative.โ€

My stomach tumbled. โ€œIs there a narrative we need to control?โ€

โ€œThere is always a narrative.โ€ He dragged his hair back from his face with his fingers. The unruly waves immediately toppled over his forehead. โ€œWhat you did for Beckett was nothing short of amazing,โ€ he bit out, shifting the topic. โ€œI hope you know that.โ€

My brows inched up my forehead. โ€œYou donโ€™t sound like youโ€™re amazed. You sound angry.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s because the damn Soul Eater thing is overshadowing the fact that you healed broken bones with yourย touch.โ€ He stepped in closer to me, a predatory intent to his stare. โ€œI donโ€™t think you understand what you did for that boy.โ€

โ€œI know what I did.โ€ I unfolded my arms. โ€œIโ€ฆI healed him.โ€

โ€œYou didnโ€™t do only that.โ€ He took another step, his eyes now like chips of amber.

Heart thumping, I backed up against the warm clay and stone of Vonettaโ€™s house. โ€œI didnโ€™t?โ€

Placing his hands on either side of my head, he leaned in. โ€œIf a wolven suffers a broken bone, they must immediately shift to prevent permanent damage to the bone, the nerves, and the soft tissue. They have minutes to shift, and he was already at that point or damn near close to it.โ€

โ€œOkay?โ€ I whispered, wondering why he still sounded frustrated. โ€œHe wouldโ€™ve lost his legs, Poppy. You prevented that.โ€

โ€œThen why do you sound angry with me?โ€ I demanded. โ€œIโ€™m not,โ€ he growled.

โ€œYou sure about that?โ€ โ€œOne hundred percent sure.โ€

โ€œAre youโ€ฆhungry again?โ€ I asked, even though his eyes remained normal, and I knew he didnโ€™t need blood yet.

โ€œNot for blood.โ€ He dipped his head then, and all the air fled my lungs.

His mouth was a mere inch from mine.

Was he going to kiss me?

People could see us. People could already be watching. But the intensity in his stare told me that wasnโ€™t the point. Whatever he felt wasnโ€™t for show.

โ€œI donโ€™t think you know your own feelings.โ€ I flattened my palms against the warm stone and clay.

โ€œIf you open your senses to me right now, youโ€™ll know exactly what Iโ€™m feeling. Do it.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want to.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ His warm breath danced across my parted lips. โ€œBecause I donโ€™t want to.โ€ A flutter started in my chest.

โ€œOr is it because you donโ€™t want to know that itโ€™s taking everything in me not to ruin yet another pair of your pants by ripping them off and fucking you so hard that days from now, youโ€™ll still be able to feel the extent of my gratitude.โ€

My eyes never felt bigger. The sharp, swift curl low in my stomach never felt more reckless, more demanding, moreย alive.

I swallowedโ€”swallowed hard. โ€œThat seems like an odd way to thank

me.โ€

He dropped his forehead to mine. โ€œItโ€™s the only way I know how.โ€ โ€œA simple thank you would suffice.โ€

โ€œNo. It would not.โ€

I couldnโ€™t think of what to say, even though there was a lot I should.

We stood there for several moments, and at any time, if either of us turned our heads just the slightest, our lips would have met. And Iโ€ฆ

I thought I would be lost. Or maybe found.

Casteel shuddered as a sound I was sure a wolven could make rumbled through him. Every muscle in me tensed deliciously, but he stepped back as he took my hand. Without saying another word, he led me to the horse and hoisted me onto the saddle.

Once he settled behind me, he folded his arm around my waist. โ€œAs much as I wish we could spend the rest of the day pretending,โ€ he said as

his lips brushed along my jaw. โ€œThereโ€™s something we must discuss.โ€ Drawing in a deep, steadying breath, I nodded. โ€œAbout our future?โ€ โ€œCan I point out that I like how you say, โ€™our future?โ€™โ€

โ€œI would prefer that you not, but since you already have, I assume thatโ€™s a yes?โ€

โ€œIt is.โ€ Casteel guided the older mare down the road. โ€œWe must talk about our marriage.โ€

โ€œWhat about it?โ€

โ€œI think you already know, Princess.โ€

I squinted at the setting sun. From the moment Iโ€™d learned that Spessaโ€™s End had been reclaimed, I had a feeling this conversation was coming.

โ€œWhat Iโ€™m about to say will probably concern you. I donโ€™t want it to.โ€

I tensed. โ€œWhen you start conversations like that, it will inevitably cause me concern.โ€

โ€œUnderstandable, but know that what guides my decisions is an abundance of caution and anticipation of potential issues,โ€ he said.

โ€œJust so you know, this is the most unromantic conversation having to do with marriage that Iโ€™ve ever heard.โ€

โ€œI cannot disagree with that,โ€ he replied, and goosebumps pimpled my skin in response to the seriousness of his tone. โ€œIโ€™d originally planned for us to marry once we reached Saionโ€™s Cove and then travel to Evaemon, the heart of Atlantia.โ€

โ€œIs that where your parents live?โ€ โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œYou planned for us to marry before I met your parents?โ€

โ€œIt would make things far less complicated if we did,โ€ he reasoned.

I may have been sheltered my entire life, but I was no fool. โ€œYou want to marry before they have a chance to stop us.โ€

โ€œThey canโ€™t stop us,โ€ he reminded me, shifting Teddyโ€™s reins into my hands. โ€œI donโ€™t need their permission.โ€

Curling my fingers around the reins, I said, โ€œBut youโ€™d want their approval?โ€

โ€œOf course, I would. Who wouldnโ€™t want their parentsโ€™ approval?โ€ But that wasnโ€™t necessary for us since the marriage was temporary.

โ€œAs Iโ€™ve said before, I think they will be suspicious of my intentions, especially my mother. She knows I havenโ€™t given up my brother.โ€ He

showed me how to guide Teddy so we werenโ€™t going straight through the town center, but on the outskirts. โ€œBoth she and my father will seek to find numerous reasons why we should delay the marriage.โ€

If we couldnโ€™t convince Alastir, I truly had no idea how we would sway his parents. โ€œOnce weโ€™re married, then thereโ€™s nothing to be delayed.โ€ โ€œExactly.โ€ His hand settled back on my hip. โ€œThis is another part that I

donโ€™t want you to overthink even though I know you probably will.โ€ โ€œAnd I will probably have a good reason to do so.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s debatable, but nonetheless, I feel it would be in our best interests to wed here, in Spessaโ€™s End.โ€

Although I suspected as much, my heart still skipped several beats. โ€œIn your best interests?โ€

โ€œInย ourย best interests,โ€ he repeated. โ€œSooner or later, people wouldโ€™ve learned of your abilities to relieve pain. If not by the arrival of those from New Haven, someone other than Beckett wouldโ€™ve been injured. I just wasnโ€™t expecting today. And while I donโ€™t believe many will look upon you with fear for long or think of you as a Soul Eater, it would be wise for us to marry before anyone thinks to do something incredibly idiotic.โ€

Something incredibly idiotic translated into someone attempting to kill

me.

โ€œAnd we have everything here that we need to marry,โ€ Casteel said as

we climbed the sloping hill. โ€œOr we will shortly.โ€ โ€œWhat are those things that we need?โ€ โ€œWell, rings, of course.โ€

I rolled my eyes. โ€œI wasnโ€™t being serious about the ring.โ€

โ€œI know, but I still plan to gift you the largest diamond youโ€™ve ever seen,โ€ he said, and I could hear the smile in his voice. โ€œBut a simple Atlantian band will have to suffice for now.โ€

There were several more skips in my heart.

โ€œThe ceremony can be small. But we will need an officiant,โ€ he continued. โ€œAny head of a bloodline can officiate a marriage.โ€

โ€œAlastir?โ€

โ€œNo. He does not speak for the wolven, even though he is among the oldest,โ€ Casteel explained. โ€œThe wolven who does is named Jasper. And, luckily, heโ€™ll be arriving in Spessaโ€™s End by tomorrow. We can be married by the evening.โ€

My chest felt tight. In a little over twenty-four hours, we could be married. A rush of confusing emotions as conflicting as the ones the people had felt when I healed Beckett hit me.

I had to focus on the plan and not everything else. My mouth was dry as I asked, โ€œAnd then we continue to Atlantia?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

I frowned slightly. โ€œBut what is the point? If we marry before we even cross the Skotos Mountains, couldnโ€™t we then send word to Carsodonia?โ€

โ€œBesides the fact that my mother might legitimately murder me for not taking my new bride home to meet her, our marriage will need to be recognized by the King and Queen. You will need to be crowned.โ€

โ€œCrowned?โ€ My head jerked to the side.

He arched a brow. โ€œYou will become a Princess, Poppy. You will need to be crowned. Then youโ€™ll have the same authority as I do. Your position in Atlantia then cannot be questioned by the King or Queen of Solis.โ€

โ€œThatโ€ฆthat seems like semantics.โ€

โ€œMore like politics. And since King Jalara was alive during Atlantiaโ€™s rule, he will know that a Prince or Princess not recognized by the Crown holds no power or authority in Atlantia.โ€

I shook my head as I faced forward. Politics was nonsense to me. Weโ€™d crested the hill and reached the woods. With the setting sun, there was only the faintest traces of sunlight filtering through the trees. โ€œAnd you believe that your parents will accept our marriage?โ€

โ€œThey will.โ€

โ€œYou do realize that Alastir doesnโ€™t quite believe our engagement is genuine,โ€ I pointed out. โ€œIf your parents donโ€™t believe us, why do you think they will crown me?โ€

โ€œBecause we will convince them,โ€ Casteel said, and he said it like there was little possibility of anything else occurring.

But I wasnโ€™t so sure.

โ€œWhat are you thinking?โ€ Casteel asked after several silent moments. โ€œIโ€™m thinking many things,โ€ I admitted. โ€œBut I know youโ€™re lying.โ€ Casteel stiffened behind me. โ€œIโ€™m notโ€”โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t mean that youโ€™re lying to mislead me,โ€ I quickly added. โ€œBut youโ€™re lying to protect me. Youโ€™re more concerned about the Soul Eater thing than youโ€™re willing to admit. And youโ€™re more worried about your

parentsโ€™ reactions than youโ€™re willing to say. That is why you want to marry now.โ€

Casteel still remained tense. โ€œAre you reading my emotions?โ€

I smiled faintly. โ€œI donโ€™t need to read your thoughts to know any of that.โ€

He was quiet and then said, โ€œPoppyโ€”โ€

โ€œNot that youโ€™ve asked, and Iโ€™mย assumingย you were getting around to it, but yes,โ€ I cut him off. โ€œI will marry you in Spessaโ€™s End.โ€
