Iย was driving Mom and Benny home from Jacobโs. Dinner had goneย well. Benny got to talk to Joy about her transplant. I think it made him feel better. Heโd never actually met anyone whoโd been through the surgery.
โWhy was the parrot screaming about Bieber?โ Benny asked from the back seat.
โHe wakes up every day choosing demonic possession,โ I said. โAnd whatโs up with the weird room with all the dead things?โ โI did not like that room,โ Mom said. โSo many eyes.โ
โHis dadโs a taxidermist. I think theyโre funny,โ I said, turning onto the freeway. โYou didnโt like the raccoon on the skateboard?โ I asked my brother.
Benny shrugged in the rearview. โYeah, I guess.โ
โBriana, why donโt you give that old man a cigarette?โ Mom asked. โHeโs on oxygen, Mamรก. It could make him hypoxic.โ
โSo? Does he have dementia? He canโt decide if he wants to smoke himself to death?โ
โNo, he doesnโt have dementia.โ
โThen why no cigarette? You tell him, โLook, I give you this, and maybe you canโt breathe. You still want it?โ And if he says yes, then itโs yes. Iโd give him one.ย Youย should give him one.โ
โJoy doesnโt want him to have them.โ
She waved me off. โUno no lo va a matar.ย Heโs a grown man, you give him what he wants. Heโs going to die, you let him die happy. And that goes for me too. Donโt you tell me I canโt have what I want because youโre trying to make me live forever. I want to die doing the things I love. I want to be happy until the very end.โ
โOkay, Mamรก.โ
โYou want to be happy?โ she said, going on. โMarry an ugly rich man who loves you more than you love him.โ She nodded at the windshield. โThis oneโs not ugly, but heโs got the rest of it.ย Enculado.โ
I snorted. โJacob isย notย whipped.โ
She pulled her face back to stare at me. โEstรกs ciega!ย Are you blind? I like this one. Iย neverย liked Nick.โ
โHa,โ I said, changing lanes. โNow you tell me.โ I let a slow breath out through my nose. โJacob definitely does not love me more than I love him, Mamรก.โ
She scoffed. โYouย areย blind. Youโre worrying in the wrong direction.
Worry the other way.โ
โWhy doesnโt he ever kiss you?โ Benny asked. โHe kisses me,โ I said defensively.
โNo, he doesnโt. He always looks like he wants to, but he never does.โ I shifted in my seat. โHe doesnโt like PDA.โ
โBut heโs always holding your hand and touching you and stuff.โ โKissing is different.โ
โItโs notย thatย differentโฆโ he mumbled.
โIf he asks you to marry him, say yes,โ Mom said. โYouโre not getting any younger.โ
โOkay, Mamรก? I just went through a horrible divorce and weโve only been dating for five seconds.โ
โAnd heโs already giving your brother an organ.ย Dios mรญo, what more do you want? I like him. Good job, good-looking. Heโs very polite.โ
โHe is polite.โ And generous, and kind. โBut just so you know, I probably wonโt ever remarry.โ
She pivoted to look at me like I was speaking in tongues. โWhy?โ โBecause it didnโt end well for me?โ
She waved me off again. โYou just be smart about it. You make him give you an expensive ring. You put your name on everything, all his property. Then if he leaves you, you take his house.โ
โMamรก!โ
โWhat? Thatโs what I did with Gil. Itโs how I know heโs not going to leave me. He canโt afford it.โ
โGil is obsessed with you and couldnโt live without you,โ I said. โAnd if he did, heโd do it without his house.โ She shrugged.
I laughed. Then I looked in the rearview. โSo whatโd you think of Jacobโs family?โ I gave my brother a twisted-lip smile. โBEN.โ
โShut up,โ he muttered.
โJaneโs pretty, huh?โ I said, looking back at the road. โSheโs single,โ I sang.
โI know. She told me.โ
I gasped. โYou asked her?โ
โNo. She askedย me. And then she said, โMe too.โโ
โSo? What are you gonna do about it?โ I asked, looking at him through the mirror.
โNothing. Not like this,โ he mumbled, gesturing to the catheter under his shirt.
My face went soft. โOne more month, Benny.โ โI liked his family,โ Mom said. โGood people.โ
โSpeaking of good families,โ I said. โLevi Olsen came in today.โ โLevi? Little Levi?โ
โYeah, he moved back. He wants to have drinks.โ Mom eyed me. โJacobโs letting you go?โ
โOkay, first of all, no man tells me what I amย allowedย to do.โ
She crossed her arms. โWhy not? You donโt tellย himย what to do?โ โUh, no. I donโt.โ
โYou should not be going there when you have a boyfriend,โ she said. โLevi is not trying to make a move on me. Heโs dating Cindy Baker. She
will be there.โ
โTake Jacob with you,โ Mom said.
โWhy?โ
โSo he wonโt get jealous.โ
I rolled my eyes. โMamรก, he is not going to be jealous. And Jacob is not a letโs-go-have-drinks-with-my-random-friends kind of guy. He doesnโt like stuff like that.โ
Sheย tsked. โMen get jealous,ย mija. At least tell him to go so he knows he can. Itโs like youโve never met a man before.โ
I couldnโt explain to Mom that this man wasnโt going to get jealous. That he wasnโt going to care one bit who I had drinks with.
Because this man wasnโt really mine.
