โWhat have you done?โ Cara said.
โI donโt know. I tripped coming down the stairs from politics. I think Iโve sprained it.โ
Pip fake-limped over to her.
โI walked to school this morning; I donโt have my car,โ she said. โOh crap, and Mum has a late viewing.โ
โYou can get a lift with me and Dad,โ Cara said, slipping her arm under Pipโs to help her to her locker. She took the textbook from Pipโs hand and placed it on the pile inside. โDonโt know why youโd willingly choose to walk when you have your own car. I never get to use mine now Naomiโs home.โ
โI just fancied a walk,โ Pip said. โI donโt have Barney as an excuse any more.โ
Cara gave her a pitying look and closed the locker door. โCome on then,โ
she said, โletโs hobble out to the car park. Lucky for you Iโm Muscles McGee; I did nine whole press-ups yesterday.โ
โNine whole ones?โ Pip smiled.
โI know. Play your cards right and you might win a ticket to the gun show.โ She flexed and growled.
Pipโs heart broke for her then. She hoped, thinkingย please please pleaseย over and again, that Cara wouldnโt lose her happy, silly self after whatever was to come.
Propped up against her, they staggered up the corridor and out of the side door.
The cold wind bit at her nose and she narrowed her eyes against it. They made their way, slowly, round the back and towards the teachersโ car park, Cara filling the journey with details from her Halloween film night. Pip tensed every time she mentioned her dad.
Elliot was there already, waiting by his car.
โThere you are,โ he said, spotting Cara. โWhatโs happened here?โ
โPipโs sprained her ankle,โ Cara said, opening the back door. โAnd Leanneโs working late. Can we give her a lift?โ
โYes, of course.โ Elliot darted forward to take Pipโs arm and help her into the car.
His skin touched hers.
It took all her strength not to recoil from him.
Rucksack settled beside her, Pip watched as Elliot closed her door and climbed in the driverโs seat. When Cara and Pip had clicked in their seat belts, he started the engine.
โSo what happened, Pip?โ he asked, waiting for a group of kids to cross the road before pulling out of the car park and on to the drive.
โIโm not sure,โ she said. โI think I just landed on it funny.โ โYou donโt need me to take you to A&E, do you?โ
โNo,โ she said, โIโm sure itโll be fine in a couple of days.โ She pulled out her phone and checked it was on silent. Sheโd had it turned off most of the day
and the battery was almost full.
Elliot batted Caraโs hand away when she started flicking through the radio stations.
โMy car, my cheesy music,โ he said. โPip?โ She jumped and almost dropped the phone. โIs your ankle swollen?โ he said.
โUm . . .โ She bent forward and reached down to feel it, the phone in her hand. Pretending to knead her ankle, she twisted her wrist and pushed the phone far underneath the back seat. โA little bit,โ she said, straightening up, her face flushed with blood. โNot too bad.โ
โOK, thatโs good,โ he said, winding through the traffic up the high street. โYou should sit with it raised up this evening.โ
โYeah, I will,โ she said and caught his eye in the rear-view mirror. And then: โIโve just realized itโs a tutoring day. Iโm not going to make you late, am I? Where do you have to get to?โ
โOh, donโt worry,โ he said, indicating left down Pipโs road. โIโve only got to get over to Old Amersham. Itโs no bother.โ
โPhew, OK.โ
Cara was asking what was for dinner as Elliot slowed and swung into Pipโs drive.
โOh, your mumย isย home,โ he said, nodding towards Leanneโs car as he pulled to a stop.
โIs she?โ Pip felt her heart doubling, scared that the air around her was visibly throbbing. โHer viewing must have been cancelled last minute. I should have checked, sorry.โ
โDonโt be silly.โ Elliot turned round to her. โDo you need help to the door?โ โNo,โ she said quickly, grabbing her rucksack. โNo, thank you, Iโll be fine.โ She pushed open the car door and started to shuffle out.
โWait,โ Cara said suddenly.
Pip froze.ย Please say she hasnโt seen the phone. Please.
โWill I see you before your exam tomorrow?โ
โOh,โ Pip said, breathing again. โNo, I have to register at the office and go to the room first thing.โ
โOK, well, goooooood luuuuuuuck,โ she said, drawing out the words in sing-song bursts. โYouโll do amazing, Iโm sure. Iโll come find you after.โ
โYes, best of luck, Pip,โ Elliot smiled. โI would say break a leg but I think the timing is a little off for that.โ
Pip laughed, so hollow it almost echoed. โThanks,โ she said, โand thanks for the lift.โ She leaned into the car door and pushed it shut.
Limping up to the house, her ears pricked, listening to the rumble of Elliotโs car as it drove away. She opened her front door and dropped the limp.
โHello,โ Leanne called from the kitchen. โDo you want the kettle on?โ
โUm, no thanks,โ she said, loitering in the doorway. โRaviโs coming over for a bit to help me study for my exam.โ
Her mum gave her a look. โWhat?โ
โDonโt think I donโt know my own daughter,โ she said, washing mushrooms in the colander. โShe only works alone and has a reputation for making
other children cry in group projects. Studying, indeed.โ She gave her the look again. โKeep your door open.โ
โJeez, I will.โ
Just as she was starting up the stairs a Ravi-shaped blur knocked at the front door.
Pip let him in and he called, โHello,โ to her mum as he followed her upstairs to her room.
โDoor open,โ Pip said when Ravi went to close it.
She sat cross-legged on her bed and Ravi pulled the desk chair over to sit in front of her.
โAll good?โ he said.
โYep, itโs under the back seat.โ โOK.โ
He unlocked his phone and opened the Find My Friends app. Pip leaned
in closer and, heads almost touching, they stared down at the map on screen.
Pipโs little orange avatar was parked outside the Wardsโ house on Hogg Hill. Ravi clicked refresh but there it stayed.
โHe hasnโt left yet,โ Pip said.
Shuffled footsteps drew along the corridor and Pip looked up to see Josh standing in her doorway.
โPippo,โ he said, fiddling with his springy hair, โcan Ravi come down and playย FIFAย with me?โ
Ravi and Pip turned to look at each other.
โUm, not now, Josh,โ she said. โWeโre quite busy.โ โIโll come down and play later, OK, bud?โ Ravi said.
โOK.โ Josh dropped his arm in defeat and padded away. โHeโs on the move,โ Ravi said, refreshing the map. โWhere?โ
โJust down Hogg Hill at the moment, before the roundabout.โ
The avatar did not move in real time; they had to keep pressing refresh and wait for the orange circle to jump across its route. It stopped just at the roundabout.
โRefresh it,โ Pip said impatiently. โIf he doesnโt turn left, then heโs not heading to Amersham.โ
The refresh button spun with fading lines. Loading. Loading. It refreshed and the orange avatar disappeared.
โWhereโs it gone?โ said Pip.
Ravi scrolled around the map to see where Elliot had jumped to. โStop.โ Pip spotted it. โThere. Heโs heading north up the A413.โ They gazed at each other.
โHeโs not going to Amersham,โ Ravi said. โNo, he is not.โ
Their eyes followed for the next eleven minutes as Elliot drove up the road, jumping incrementally whenever Ravi pressed his thumb on the refresh arrow.
โHeโs near Wendover,โ Ravi said and then, seeing Pipโs face, โWhat?โ
โThe Wards used to live in Wendover before they moved to a bigger house in Kilton. Before we met them.โ
โHeโs turned,โ Ravi said and Pip leaned in again. โDown somewhere called Mill End Road.โ
Pip watched the orange dot motionless on the white pixel road. โRefresh,โ she said.
โI am,โ said Ravi, โitโs stuck.โ He pressed refresh again; the loading spool spun for a second and stopped, leaving the orange dot in the same place. He pressed it again and it still didnโt move.
โHeโs stopped,โ Pip said, clutching Raviโs wrist and turning it to get a better look at the map. She stood up, grabbed Raviโs laptop from her desk and settled it on her lap. โLetโs see where he is.โ
She opened the browser and pulled up Google Maps. She searched forย Mill End Road, Wendoverย and clicked on to the satellite mode.
โHow far down the road would you say he is? Here?โ she pointed at the screen.
โIโd say a bit more to the left.โ
โOK.โ Pip dropped the little orange man on to the road and the street view popped up.
The narrow country road was enclosed by trees and tall shrubbery that glittered in the sun as Pip clicked and dragged the screen to get a full view.
The houses were just on one side, set back a little from the road.
โYou think heโs at this house?โ She pointed at a small brick house with a white garage door, barely visible behind the trees and telephone pole that bordered it.
โHmm . . .โ Ravi looked from his phone to his laptop screen. โItโs either that one or the one to the left of it.โ
Pip looked up the street numbers. โSo heโs either at number forty-two or forty-four.โ
โIs that where they used to live?โ Ravi asked. Pip didnโt know. She shrugged, and he said, โBut you can find out from Cara?โ
โYes,โ she said. โIโve had a lot of practise with pretending and lies.โ Her gut churned and her throat tightened. โSheโs my best friend and this is going
to destroy her. Itโs going to destroy everyone, everything.โ Ravi slipped his hand into hers. โItโs nearly over, Pip,โ he said.
โItโs over now,โ she said. โWe need to go there tonight and see what Elliotโs hiding. Andie could be alive in there.โ
โThatโs just a guess.โ
โThis whole thing has been guesswork.โ She took her hand away so she could hold her aching head. โI need this to be over.โ
โOK,โ Ravi said gently. โWe are going to end this. But not tonight.
Tomorrow. You find out from Cara which address heโs going to, if itโs their old house. And after you finish school tomorrow, we can go there at night, when Elliotโs not there, and see what heโs up to. Or we call the police with an anonymous tip and send them to that address, OK? But not now, Pip. You canโt upend your whole life tonight, I wonโt let you. I wonโt let you throw away Cambridge. Right now, you are going to study for your exam and you are going to get some bloody sleep. OK?โ
โBut โโ
โNo buts, Sarge.โ He stared at her, his eyes suddenly sharp. โMr Ward has already ruined too many lives. Heโs not ruining yours as well. OK?โ
โOK,โ she said quietly.
โGood.โ He took her hand, pulled her off the bed and into her chair. He wheeled her over to the desk and put a pen in her hand. โYou are going to forget about Andie Bell and Sal for the next eighteen hours. And I want you in bed and sleeping by ten thirty.โ
She looked up at Ravi, at his kind eyes and his serious face, and she didnโt know what to say, didnโt know what to feel. She was on a high cliff edge somewhere between laughing and crying and screaming.
