Chapter no 77

Taming 7 (Boys of Tommen, 5)

โ€œItโ€™s going to be okay.โ€ With one arm wrapped around my waist, Shannon led me back to the common room. โ€œJohnny is going to find him.โ€

โ€œI should have gone with him,โ€ I replied, numb. โ€œItโ€™s my fault.โ€

โ€œNo, Claire, itโ€™s not. None of this is your fault, I promise.โ€ She stopped in front of the door and turned to look at me. โ€œAnd youโ€™re in no condition to go running around town looking for him. Joeyโ€™s not drinking. Heโ€™ll drive us back to your house and weโ€™ll be there when Johnny brings him home. Because heย willย find him, Shan. He wonโ€™t stop until he does.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t deal with Lizzie right now, Shan,โ€ I admitted, gesturing at the closed door. โ€œI canโ€™t.โ€ Sniffling, I batted a tear off my cheek. โ€œBecause if she says another word about Gerard, I think I might snap.โ€

โ€œThen wait out here, okay,โ€ Shannon replied. โ€œIโ€™ll go inside and get my brother.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ I agreed with a hiccup, not trusting myself to be anywhere near our other friend in this moment.

When Shannon opened the door a moment later, and tried to slip inconspicuously inside, Lizzieโ€™s voice boomed through the air. โ€œI donโ€™t care what she says. Heโ€™s clearly after getting into her head and twisting everything around,โ€ she was screaming. โ€œSheโ€™s making all of this up to cover for him.โ€

That was it.

That was all I could take.

Losing every ounce of self-control left inside of my body, I slammed my palm against the semi-closed door and pushed it back open.

โ€œMaking it up?โ€ My voice was deathly cold as I stood in the doorway, eyes trained on the willowy blonde. โ€œMaking itย up?โ€

โ€œWhy would you do that?โ€ Lizzie cried, turning to face me. โ€œWhy would you lie about my sister like that?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t lie,โ€ I heard myself respond, knowing that the only thing I had left to lose had already bolted. โ€œAnd I didnโ€™t make anything up.โ€ Narrowing my eyes, I gritted out the words, โ€œMark didnโ€™t rape your sister.โ€

โ€œYes, heย did! I read the words on her suicide note,โ€ she screamed, tears flowing freely down her cheeks. โ€œIย know, Claire!โ€ Strangling out a heaving breath, she sobbed, โ€œIย knowย what he did to her!โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t know anything!โ€ I shouted back, losing my cool. โ€œYou donโ€™t have a fucking clue about what actually happened, Lizzie.โ€

โ€œAnd you do?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ I screamed back at her. โ€œYour sister is not the victim in this story. She was never Markโ€™s victim. She was his fucking accomplice!โ€

You could have heard a pin drop.

Everyoneโ€™s eyes landed on me.

โ€œWhat are you saying, Claire?โ€ Hugh demanded, making a beeline for me. โ€œWhat the fuck does that mean?โ€

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t Caoimhe, Hugh,โ€ I cried, when my brotherโ€™s hands clamped down on my shoulders, โ€œit wasย Gerard.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ My brother staggered backwards, clutching his chest. โ€œWhat do you mean it was Gibs?โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s a note from Caoimhe,โ€ I tried to explain, feeling my entire frame rack with tremors. โ€œGerard kept it all along.โ€ Shuddering, I squeezed out, โ€œIt explains everything.โ€

โ€œHow dare you!โ€ Lizzie choked out, eyes full of horror and betrayal. โ€œThereโ€™s no other letter.โ€

โ€œHow dareย you,โ€ I challenged right back at her. โ€œHow fucking dare you treat him like you have all these years.โ€ I couldnโ€™t stop my tears from falling or my voice from rising. โ€œAnd yes there is another letter, the real fucking letter, and I suggest that you read it, Liz. And then, once you have, you might want to start directing your anger at the right people.โ€ย Narrowing my eyes, I spat, โ€œBecause Gerard Gibson was never your target!โ€

โ€œNo, no, no, I know the truth,โ€ she desperately refuted my claims, tears streaming down her cheeks, looking more vulnerable than Iโ€™d seen her look since her sisterโ€™s funeral.

She looked so broken, so utterly lost, that for a moment I had the strongest urge to fold her into my arms and make her feel better.

But I couldnโ€™t do it.

Not this time.

I couldnโ€™t bow to her anger.

Her pain belonged to her. Passing it around to the rest of us wasnโ€™t fair.

She wasnโ€™t the same little girl Iโ€™d grown up with, and while my heart truly broke for all the heartache she had endured, I couldnโ€™t live my life with this level of toxicity in it.

โ€œI know what really happened,โ€ she continued to cry.

โ€œYou werenโ€™t there,โ€ I replied, striving for calmness when I felt anything but. โ€œYou donโ€™t know the whole story. You never did. None of us knew.โ€ Straightening my spine, I forced myself to add, โ€œBut we do now.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s trying to change the narrative.โ€

โ€œOf what?โ€

โ€œOf my sisterโ€™s death!โ€

โ€œNo, heโ€™s not,โ€ I shouted back. โ€œGerard has never done anything other than try to survive the horrendous hand of cards life dealt him.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t believe you,โ€ she cried, roughly pushing Patrick away when he tried to hug her. โ€œGod, I fucking hate you so much right now, Claire!โ€

โ€œFine,โ€ I snapped back. โ€œDonโ€™t believe me. Label me as a liar. If hating me fills a hole in your heart, then you go right ahead and hate me, but donโ€™t expect me to wait around and take your shit anymore. Because Iโ€™m done with it all. Including you.โ€

โ€œClaire.โ€ Shannon hurried to intervene. โ€œYou donโ€™t mean that.โ€

โ€œOh, Iโ€™ve never meant anythingย more, Shannon,โ€ I ground out. โ€œI canโ€™t do this with her anymore. Iย wonโ€™t.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not doing this with you,โ€ Lizzie sobbed.

โ€œWell, I am absolutely doing this with you,โ€ I spat back. โ€œBecause I am done holding my tongue, and I will never allow you to use him as your personal punching bag ever again.โ€

โ€œYou are such aย bitch.โ€

โ€œAnd you are such a bully,โ€ I roared back. โ€œYou know, Gerard took your bullshit for years.โ€ Furious, I shook my head. โ€œHe knew the truth, and let you treat him like that. Let you try to meddle and twist and turn his friends against him.โ€ I narrowed my eyes in disgust. โ€œThat was you, Lizzie.ย Youย did that to him, but it stops now. Do you hear me? Go and get help. Sort your head out because Iโ€™m done walking this road with you. Iโ€™m stepping off!โ€

โ€œGuys, please,โ€ Shannon offered up. โ€œPlease donโ€™t fight.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not fighting, Shannon,โ€ I stated. โ€œIโ€™m just done.โ€

โ€œWe can fix this, guys,โ€ Shannon tried to plead. โ€œCome on. After everything weโ€™ve been through. We can get through this together.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t,โ€ Lizzie hiccupped a sob. โ€œNot after tonight.โ€

Neither could I. โ€œDonโ€™t ever speak to me again, Lizzie Young,โ€ I warned, and then, truly disappointed in myself, I walked away from one of my oldest friends in the world for the sake of another.
