Chapter no 55

Taming 7 (Boys of Tommen, 5)

By the time school rolled around on Monday, I was so deep in my feels I didnโ€™t think there was any saving me. Happy, wondrous, epic, that first love feeling had consumed me to the point where I honestly felt like I was floating on air.

Sure, Hughโ€™s party had imploded on Saturday night, and everyone had gotten in a huge fight, but Iโ€™d woken up in Gerardโ€™s arms yesterday morning and we had spent the entire day together. I didnโ€™t care that a large portion of that time had been spent cleaning up after the party and receiving lectures from our mothers. Heโ€™d been by my side the entire time and that was all I ever wanted.

Across the table, though, something felt very off with my brother. Katie had her hand entwined with his on top of the lunch table, but while she was giggling at something Patrick and Gerard had said, my brother looked like he wanted to faceplant the table.

Seriously, with his elbow resting on the table, Hugh slumped forward and stared down at his untouched lunch.

I knew it couldnโ€™t have anything to do with being told off for fighting with Mark, because he was fine yesterday. This sudden dip in mood was both new and concerning.

โ€œDid you get bad news?โ€ I asked, reaching across the table to tug on his sleeve.

โ€œHuh?โ€ Blinking, he looked up at me, wide-eyed and startled. โ€œWhat?โ€

His eyes were bloodshot, with dark circles underneath his otherwise paler than usual face.

Aw crackers.

Something was really wrong.

โ€œIs it Aunty Sarah? Did Mam text you?โ€ Panic gnawed at my gut. Our mother was taking our maternal aunt for her three-month checkup today; she was in remission from breast cancer. I suddenly had the worst feeling niggling at me. โ€œDid she get bad news at the hospital?โ€

โ€œSarahโ€™s grand,โ€ he muttered, resuming his post of slumping over the lunch table with his head in his hand. โ€œMam already texted โ€“ sheโ€™s still in the clear.โ€

Relief flooded me. โ€œThen whatโ€™s wrong?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s been like this all day,โ€ Katie explained in a concerned tone, flicking her attention back to my brother.

โ€œIโ€™m grand,โ€ Hugh said quietly. โ€œJust tired.โ€

โ€œAre you sure?โ€ Reaching over with her free hand, she pressed the back of her hand to his forehead. โ€œGod, Hugh, youโ€™re spiking a temperature.โ€

โ€œAre ya sick, lad?โ€ That was Johnny, who had turned his attention to his friend.

โ€œJesus, he is, Cap,โ€ Gerard added, straining out of his seat to catch ahold of my brotherโ€™s shirt collar, and yank him across the table. โ€œHeโ€™s burning the fuck up.โ€

โ€œYou should go to the office,โ€ Patrick added, all eyes on Hugh now. โ€œThereโ€™s a bad dose going around the place.โ€

โ€œHe said heโ€™s fine,โ€ Lizzie muttered from her perch beside me. โ€œSo drop it.โ€

โ€œI can drive you home.โ€ Pushing his chair back, Johnny stood up and reached for his keys. โ€œDo you want to come for the spin, Shan?โ€

โ€œIโ€™mย grand, lads,โ€ my brother bit out, breathing hard and fast now, as he pulled at the tie around his neck and settled back down on his seat. โ€œIโ€™m justย tired.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re clearly not,โ€ Katie pushed, fawning at him like he was a little child.

โ€œYouโ€™re right.โ€ Clearly unhappy with the attention he was receiving, Hugh reached up and gently removed her hand from his face before rising from the table. โ€œI need to go home.โ€ Turning to Johnny, he added, โ€œI have the car, Cap, Iโ€™ll drive myself, but thanks.โ€

โ€œYou sure, lad?โ€

โ€œYeah, I just need to lie down.โ€

โ€œDo you want me to come with you?โ€ Katie asked, moving to follow after him.

โ€œNo, you should probably stay away from me,โ€ Hugh strangled out, offering her a half-hearted smile that didnโ€™t meet his eyes. โ€œI could be contagious.โ€ When he hurried out of the lunch hall, Katie still chose to rush after him.

โ€œWhat a big baby,โ€ Gerard offered up. โ€œJesus, talk about milking the situation. Having everyone worrying about him.โ€

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you do the world a favor and lose your voice, Thor,โ€ Lizzie spat, turning to glare at him. โ€œI swear if the world ended tomorrow, you would be the cockroach still skittering around the place.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you start with me, witch,โ€ Gerard warned, holding a hand up to warn her off. โ€œWe both agreed to a treaty, remember?โ€ That was true. Johnny had laid down the law in the common room this morning. The rules were made very clear to both of them. โ€œIf we canโ€™t be civil, we stay silent. So, stay the fuck silent.โ€

โ€œCome on, guys,โ€ Shannon sighed. โ€œLetโ€™s not do this today, huh?โ€

โ€œDo what?โ€ Lizzie clapped back. โ€œBe irritated by his presence, because Iโ€™m sorry, Shan, but no can do. The fact that heโ€™s above ground breathing is enough to put me in a bad mood.โ€

โ€œFuck you,โ€ Gerard growled, shoving his chair back and standing up.

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong, Thor?โ€ Lizzie taunted. โ€œYouโ€™re always full of comebacks.โ€

โ€œTrust me, Liz, you donโ€™t want my comeback,โ€ he bit out, before stalking out of the lunch hall.

โ€œDid you have to?โ€ I demanded, dropping my head in my hands. โ€œYou were having a good morning.โ€ That was true. Lizzie had a surprising pep in her step when she showed up at school this morning.

โ€œYeah,โ€ she wholeheartedly agreed. โ€œUntil he showed up.โ€

โ€œLizzie,โ€ I growled in warning, โ€œyou have to drop this.โ€

โ€œI will,โ€ she assured me, leaning back to fold her arms across her chest. โ€œWhen Iโ€™m dead.โ€

โ€œYeah, Iโ€™m not listening to this shite,โ€ Johnny declared, rising to his feet. โ€œIโ€™ll see ya later, Shan,โ€ he added, dropping another epic hair kiss to the top of her head before heading off in the direction of his friend.

โ€œYou know why he left, donโ€™t you?โ€ I snapped. โ€œBecause if he didnโ€™t, he would have lost it with you.โ€

โ€œYou think I care what Captain Fantastic thinks?โ€

โ€œIย care what Johnny thinks,โ€ Shannon offered calmly. โ€œAnd you care what I think, so just sit with that for a moment before you snap back, Liz.โ€

To my surprise, she did just that.

โ€œSo, that was one hell of a party, huh?โ€ I tossed out, trying to calm the waters once more. โ€œWeโ€™re really lucky the neighbors didnโ€™t actually call the Gardaรญ.โ€

โ€œPity theyโ€”โ€ Stopping short, Lizzie calmly set her apple onto the table. โ€œYou know what?โ€ She pushed back her chair and rose. โ€œI think Iโ€™m going to get some fresh air.โ€

โ€œGood,โ€ Shannon praised, hurrying after her. โ€œFresh air works, too.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s happening to this gang?โ€ I exclaimed when I was left alone at the lunch table with only Patrick for company. โ€œI swear everybody is getting weirder by the day.โ€

โ€œHonestly, who even knows anymore.โ€ Shrugging his shoulders, Patrick unwrapped the tinfoil containing his sandwich and then proceeded to dump the entire filling out before taking a tiny bite of the crust.

โ€œYou donโ€™t like your sandwich?โ€ I asked, interest piqued.

โ€œI donโ€™t eat meat,โ€ came his quiet reply.

โ€œYou donโ€™t?โ€ My eyes widened. โ€œSince when?โ€

โ€œSince I was five and had to help my father make black pudding,โ€ he replied with a grimace. โ€œTrust me, itโ€™s a process you donโ€™t want to know the inner details of.โ€

โ€œEw.โ€

โ€œHm,โ€ he agreed, using a plastic fork to slide everything off his bread, including the butter. โ€œNot the normal reaction of a farmerโ€™s son, I canย assure you.โ€ He grimaced again before gesturing to the leftover filling on the tinfoil. โ€œHence my motherโ€™s persistent efforts to get me to align with normal regulations.โ€

โ€œOh well, who wants to be normal anyway?โ€ I offered, giving him my warmest smile. โ€œBesides, I have it on good authority that weird is a side effect of epic.โ€

He arched a dark brow. โ€œI thought the phrase was awesome.โ€

โ€œMeh,โ€ I dismissed, cracking open my can of Fanta and pushing it towards him. โ€œSip?โ€

โ€œNah, Iโ€™m good, Baby Biggs,โ€ he chuckled, shaking his head. โ€œSo, howโ€™s the great romance coming along?โ€

My face flamed with heat. โ€œGerard told you?โ€

โ€œDidnโ€™t have to,โ€ Patrick replied. โ€œContrary to his actions, and lack of impulse control, thereโ€™s only ever been you for him.โ€

My heart warmed at his words. โ€œReally?โ€

โ€œReally.โ€

โ€œHey, thanks, Patrick.โ€

โ€œFor what?โ€

โ€œThe clarity.โ€

โ€œAnytime.โ€

โ€œSpeaking about great romances.โ€ Waggling my brows, I leaned in close. โ€œI heard a juicy rumor around school about you.โ€

His brows shot up. โ€œYou did, huh?โ€

โ€œUh-huh.โ€ I grinned. โ€œApparently youโ€™ve been getting down and dirty with one of Aoifeโ€™s friends.โ€

โ€œIs that so?โ€

โ€œYup.โ€

โ€œHm.โ€ Neither confirming or denying, he tore another piece of bread from his sandwich and popped it into his mouth.

Whoa, he would make a fabulous card player.

โ€œOf course, thatโ€™s if you donโ€™t have another girl from your long list of admirers lined up.โ€

Now he did raise a brow.

โ€œPatrick, come on,โ€ I laughed. โ€œDonโ€™t looked surprised. Youโ€™re a total babe.โ€

Another cynical brow raise.

โ€œMost of the girls in sixth year have the hots for you.โ€

โ€œUh-huh.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you care that girls are practically brawling in bathrooms over you?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m entirely uninterested in participating in drama, Claire. If that means Iโ€™m a loner or frigid, then Iโ€™ll happily shoulder the label. They can think what they want about me. Iโ€™m not pushed.โ€

โ€œWow,โ€ I mused. โ€œHow does it feel to be so secure in yourself?โ€

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you look in the mirror and ask the girl staring back at you?โ€ he shot back with a smirk. โ€œBecause from where Iโ€™m sitting sheโ€™s got a tight fist hold of her worth.โ€

โ€œHm.โ€ I smiled back at him, thoroughly enjoying this conversation and listening to his input on the world. โ€œYouโ€™re good with words,โ€ I offered. โ€œWhen you use them.โ€

โ€œI use them,โ€ he replied. โ€œNot everyone listens.โ€

โ€œOoh, deep โ€ฆ Okay, pee break!โ€ Pushing my chair back, I sprang up and moved for the door. โ€œIโ€™ll be right back.โ€

โ€œTake your time,โ€ he laughed after me. โ€œAnd too much information.โ€

Smiling to myself, I skipped down the corridor in the direction of the girlsโ€™ bathroom, stopping to call out, โ€œGet a room,โ€ to the ridiculously attractive couple eating the faces off each other in the stairwell on my way.

โ€œMind your business,โ€ Aoife called back, not bothering to release her hold on Joey. โ€œAs you were, Stud.โ€

Aw โ€ฆ I hope they had condoms in the annex.

Pushing the bathroom door inwards, I stepped inside and then, because I was a sucker for a good echo, I tap danced across the floor, enjoying the clickety noise the heels of my shoes made against the tiles.

โ€œHey girls,โ€ I acknowledged, offering my classmates Helen and Shelley a wave before disappearing inside one of the cubicles to take care of business.

When I reappeared a few minutes later, they were both still there, leaning against the sinks with one of their camera phones in hand.

โ€œWhatโ€™s up?โ€ I asked, joining them at the sinks to wash my hands.

โ€œDo you want to ask her?โ€

โ€œOh my God, Hells, no! Iโ€™m not asking her.โ€

โ€œWell, one of us has to.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s up, girls?โ€ I smiled. โ€œAsk me what?โ€

Stepping behind Helen, Shelley pushed her forward and said, โ€œHelen wants to know if itโ€™s true about you and Gibsie.โ€

โ€œWhat about us?โ€

โ€œAre you with him?โ€

Excitement bubbled inside of me because I had waited sixteen long years to finally answer this question. โ€œYes.โ€ Beaming, I clutched my chest and feigned a swoon. โ€œI am absolutely with him.โ€

Instead of being thrilled like I had expected my classmates since first year to be for their fellow peer, they looked at each other with wide eyes.

โ€œWhy?โ€ Instantly suspicious, I folded my arms across my chest. โ€œWhat did you guys hear?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not what we heard,โ€ Shelley replied nervously. โ€œItโ€™s what we saw.โ€

โ€œSaw?โ€ I stared blankly. โ€œIโ€™m not following you.โ€

โ€œShow her, Helen.โ€

โ€œShow me what?โ€ I demanded just as a camera phone was thrust in my face. โ€œWhat is this?โ€ I snapped, attention flicking between them. โ€œWhat am I looking โ€ฆ โ€ My words broke off and my breath hitched in my throat when I glanced at the screen of the phone.

The image was a grainy one, but it was clear enough to show Gerard sitting in the corner of Biddies Bar, in a compromising position, with a girl dressed as Catwoman.

My heart stopped dead in my chest for a solid three second before slamming back to life with a vengeance. โ€œWhere did you get this?โ€

โ€œWe took it,โ€ Shelley admitted.

โ€œWhen?โ€

โ€œHalloween night.โ€

Oh God.

Oh God.

Pain.

It was taking me over.

โ€œIt could be totally innocent,โ€ Helen hurried to say. โ€œI mean, it was almost closing time, and we only stopped into Biddies for a couple of drinks, but he came in and sat in the corner by himself.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s when she showed up.โ€

โ€œShe was clearly more into him than he was her.โ€

โ€œBut they were still together when we left.โ€
