Chapter no 52

Taming 7 (Boys of Tommen, 5)

The Halloween/eighteenth birthday party Sinead Biggs threw for her son turned out to be a roaring success. More people than I knew the names of were crammed into their three-story house, while the DJ she hired played a mixture of modern jams and Halloween classics. The drink was flying, the craic was ninety, and I was freaking the hell out.

Clammed up tighter than a duckโ€™s ass with tension, I followed Claire around the party like she had an invisible collar and lead attached to my neck.

I didnโ€™t know what else to do.

My mind was in a heap after our kiss, and while Claire found it effortless to socialize, mingle, and entertain the masses, I had been given no such instruction manual.

Did I hold her hand? Did I not?

Did I run for my life before I could fuck up our friendship? Or was it too late for running, and if so, should I apologize?

I honestly had no idea.

All I knew in this moment was that if the viper didnโ€™t stop throwing shade at me, I was going to lose my mind. Already, Lizzie had tossed half a dozen snippy comments, both directed at meย andย at my expense, and I was running low on patience.

โ€œIgnore her,โ€ Johnny instructed a little while later when he joined me outside. โ€œSheโ€™s looking for a reaction, lad. Keep onย notย giving her one.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m trying,โ€ I bit out, taking a deep drag of the cigarette Iโ€™d bummed from Joey. Unlike him, I was more of a social smoker, and only smoked O.P.โ€™s โ€“ aka other peopleโ€™s. โ€œBut sheโ€™s everywhere I turn.โ€

The words were no sooner out of my mouth when Lizzie steppedย into the back garden. The minute her eyes landed on me she released a furious growl. โ€œWhy do you always have to be everywhere I go?โ€

โ€œI could say the same about you,โ€ I snapped back, bristling.

Johnny placed a steadying hand on my shoulder. โ€œYouโ€™re good, Gibs.โ€

No, I wasnโ€™t. I wasnโ€™tย goodย at all, and this girl only made my life a million times more miserable. Still, I offered my best friend a clipped nod and forced myself to comply and ignore her.

โ€œHeย sureย is good,โ€ Lizzie sniped. โ€œA good-for-nothing traitor bastard!โ€

โ€œBack off,โ€ Johnny warned, quickly cutting her off. โ€œI get that youโ€™re one of Shannonโ€™s best friends, and Iโ€™m trying to respect that relationship, really I am, but donโ€™t walk over a line here, because heโ€™s my best friend, and I wonโ€™t hesitate to take his side.โ€

Lizzie continued to glare at us for a long beat before turning around and stalking back into the house.

โ€œYouโ€™d really take my side?โ€ I asked, ignoring the sound of the door slamming.

โ€œIโ€™m already on your side, Gibs.โ€

Well, shit.

โ€œYou know, youโ€™re like the brother I never had.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t get messy on me, Gibs,โ€ he chuckled. โ€œYou havenโ€™t had that much to drink, lad.โ€

โ€œYet,โ€ I corrected with a smile. โ€œIโ€™m so fucking glad your grandmother died when she did.โ€

โ€œWow, thanks, Gibs.โ€

โ€œBecause youโ€™re here,โ€ I tried to explain. โ€œFuck knows where Iโ€™d be if you hadnโ€™t moved to Ballylaggin.โ€

Several hours later, as I threw shapes around the Biggsโ€™ jam-packed kitchen to theย Ghostbustersย anthem, I concluded that Johnny might be onto something when he labeled me a messy drunk.

I certainly felt like a mess right about now.

โ€œNah,โ€ I slurred, toasting myself before necking my seventh ghost-shaped, vodka-jelly shot, โ€œfuck โ€™em all.โ€

โ€œSteady up on the shots, pet,โ€ Mammy number two instructed, and then she did the unthinkable and took the tray out of my hand. โ€œThatโ€™s a good boy.โ€

โ€œSinead!โ€ I wailed, eyeing the tray longingly. โ€œI helped make those.โ€

โ€œYes, you did, Gibs,โ€ she agreed, squeezing my cheek with affection. โ€œAnd now, you can let the others help you drink them.โ€

โ€œFine.โ€ Huffing out a breath, I slumped against the island and sulked. โ€œRuin my life, why donโ€™t ya?โ€

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you go and see what Claire is doing instead of standing around on your own all night, hm?โ€ Leaning a hip against the island, she smiled up at me. โ€œIโ€™m sure sheโ€™d love to have a dance with you.โ€

โ€œWhile I would love to dance with your daughter, it wouldnโ€™t be a wise move.โ€

โ€œOh?โ€ She smirked. โ€œAnd why not?โ€

โ€œBecause I might be tempted to do more than just dance with her,โ€ I replied in a solemn tone. โ€œI might be lured into performing the physical act of love.โ€

โ€œYou do realize itโ€™s me youโ€™re talking to, donโ€™t you, Gibs?โ€ Frowning, Claireโ€™s mam reached up and felt my brow. โ€œAs in Claireโ€™s mother.โ€

โ€œOh yes.โ€ I nodded solemnly. โ€œIโ€™d know your tits anywhere. Thank you, by the way. For making Claire. You did a top-notch job on that one.โ€ Frowning, I added, โ€œThe older one could do with a bit of work, but the younger one is perfect.โ€

โ€œOh dear.โ€ Sinead sighed wearily. โ€œI think itโ€™s time someoneโ€™s mother comes to collect him.โ€

โ€œI think you might be right.โ€ Sighing dramatically, I swiped another shot from the confiscated tray and tossed it back. โ€œMeanwhile, until she arrives, I must resume my dancing a safe distance from your daughterโ€™s perfect tits โ€“ thanks for those, too, by the way.โ€
