Chapter no 32

Taming 7 (Boys of Tommen, 5)

When I woke up on Tuesday morning in Gerardโ€™s bed, the side of the mattress heโ€™d slept on was vacant. In his place was a haphazardly scribbled note, left on his pillow, that read, โ€œearly morning training xโ€ in his handwriting.

Iโ€™d somehow managed to ninja-sneak my way across the street without getting caught by either set of parentals, but when I found my brother in the kitchen eating breakfast before school andย notย training like Gerardโ€™s note had suggested, I felt a wave of uneasiness sweep through me.

Surviving Hughโ€™s in-depth interrogating, I had made it to school with my dignity intact, but that wave of uneasiness continued to fester and grow with every class that passed.

I knew the boys had a rugby match tomorrow afternoon against St. Andrews, and before game days, it wasnโ€™t uncommon for them to not hang out together, but the fact that I hadnโ€™t managed to snag one single opportunity to talk to Gerard all day gave me the distinct impression that he was avoiding me.

The straw that broke the camelโ€™s back was his absence at big lunch. When Johnny arrived at the rugby table without sight nor sound of Gerard, I hit my limit. Because if Mr. Serious Captain had time to eat lunch with his girlfriend, then that was all the evidence I needed. Gerardโ€™s absence had nothing to do with scoring tries and everything to do with scoring girls.

Thisย girl.

Me.

Oh God โ€ฆ

โ€œI need to talk to you!โ€ I blurted out, eyes locked on Shannon, whoย was laughing at something her boyfriend had whispered in her ear. โ€œItโ€™s an emergency!โ€

โ€œYou do?โ€ My bestieโ€™s attention flicked to me. โ€œIt is?โ€

โ€œI do, and absolutely.โ€ Shoving my chair back, I leapt up, body bristling with nervous energy. โ€œLike rightย now, Shan.โ€

Without a word, Shannon rose to her feet and moved to my side, clearly understanding the assignment.

โ€œItโ€™s so bad, Shan,โ€ I strangled out, catching ahold of her hand before dragging her off in the direction of the girlsโ€™ bathrooms. Pushing the door inwards, I hurried inside and instantly began to pace the empty bathroom. โ€œLike so, so bad, chickie.โ€ Cracking my knuckles, I pushed at the sleeves of my jumper while I considered how to verbalize last nightโ€™s events to my bestie.

โ€œOh my God, Claire, what is it?โ€ Shannonโ€™s voice was laced with concern, and her blue eyes were wide in horror. โ€œWhat happened?โ€ Closing the space between us, she reached up and touched my brow. โ€œAre you sick? Because I thought you looked flushed this morning when you arrived at school.โ€

โ€œYes and no,โ€ I admitted with a grimace. โ€œAs in, yes, Iโ€™m flushed, but no, Iโ€™m not sick โ€“ unless of course you take into account what happened last night.โ€ Whimpering, I chewed on my nails before adding, โ€œIn that case, I suppose I would be consideredย sickย in several different constitutions where promiscuity is frowned upon.โ€

โ€œOkay, youโ€™re rambling.โ€ She reached up and grabbed my arms. โ€œJust take a breath and talk to me, Claire.โ€

โ€œYes, I am rambling, Shan,โ€ I squeezed out. โ€œIโ€™m rambling because I am freaking the hell out!โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s Gerard!โ€

โ€œWhat about him?โ€

โ€œHe and I โ€ฆ last night he โ€ฆ โ€ Nope. I couldnโ€™t do it. I couldnโ€™t verbalize last nightโ€™s debauchery out loud. โ€œOh God, I canโ€™t say the word!โ€

โ€œSay the word?โ€ Shannon gaped at me in horror. โ€œClaire, did Gibs do something to hurt you?โ€

โ€œOh my God, no.โ€ I shook my head. โ€œGerard would never hurt me. Not in a million years.โ€ Swallowing deeply, I whispered, โ€œHe did the opposite of hurting me.โ€

Shannon continued to frown up at me for a long beat before her eyes widened in understanding and her mouth formed a perfect little O-shape. โ€œOh.โ€

โ€œOh,โ€ I confirmed with a whimper, while nodding my head enthusiastically to let my bestie know just how big of an O it was.

โ€œYou let him do what?โ€ Lizzie demanded, standing in the bathroom doorway, clearly having heard every word. โ€œYou let that piece of shit into your knickers? Are you completely insane?โ€

โ€œOh my God, Liz, keep it down, will you?โ€ Shannon whisper-hissed, dragging our friend into the bathroom and closing the door behind her. โ€œJeez.โ€

โ€œOkay, you need to not judge me right now,โ€ I snapped back, glowering at her. โ€œBecause first, I didnโ€™t sleep with Gerard last night, and second, I never once judged you when youย actuallyย slept with Pierce.โ€

โ€œWhyย wouldย you have a problem with me and Pierce?โ€ Lizzie snapped back. โ€œItโ€™s not like heโ€™s related to the fucking monster that ruined your family.โ€ Her eyes were full of hurt when she said, โ€œAnd itโ€™s not like I purposefully chose to betray my friend by getting with him.โ€

โ€œYou seriously want to talk to me about betraying friends with boys?โ€ I narrowed my eyes and glared back at her, unwilling to back down this time. โ€œOne word, Liz:ย brother.โ€

โ€œWhoa, girls, just stop, okay?โ€ Shannon interjected, holding her hands up.

โ€œLetโ€™s just take it down a notch here.โ€

โ€œSo, I take it youโ€™re with him now?โ€ Ignoring Shannonโ€™s attempts to play peacemaker, Lizzie folded her arms across her chest and glared. โ€œYou and Thor. Youโ€™re a thing now, right?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I replied in a hard tone. โ€œWeโ€™re not, but you would alreadyย know that if you stopped throwing around accusations and actually listened for a change.โ€

โ€œOkay, shush!โ€ Reaching up, Shannon clamped her hands over both of our mouths. โ€œNo more fighting, okay?โ€ Her attention flicked between both of us as she spoke. โ€œI know this is a delicate situation for both of you, but this isnโ€™t good enough, guys. Itโ€™s hard enough to be a girl in this world without turning on each other. Especially since weโ€™ve been friends since primary school.โ€ Blowing out a breath, she took a step back and gestured to me. โ€œOkay, Claire, tell us everything.โ€ She then walked over to Lizzie and squeezed her hand. โ€œAnd weโ€™ll listen.โ€

I held my breath for a moment, waiting for Lizzieโ€™s comeback, but when it didnโ€™t come, I exhaled slowly and explained last nightโ€™s shenanigans in explicit detail.

โ€œAnd then Gerard did something with his thumb and pointer finger,โ€ I added, using my own hand to give them a detailed visual rundown. โ€œAnd that was it.โ€ I threw my hands up in despair. โ€œI wasย dead, I tell you!โ€ Planting my hands on my hips, I looked at both of them expectantly. โ€œWell? Any ideas?โ€

โ€œHe made you come,โ€ Lizzie replied flatly. โ€œCongratulations.โ€

โ€œOh my God,โ€ Shannon gushed between fits of laughter. โ€œIโ€™m so happy for you guys.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t be,โ€ I was quick to warn. โ€œHe was gone when I woke up this morning and heโ€™s been avoiding me like the plague ever since.โ€

โ€œSounds about right,โ€ Lizzie deadpanned. โ€œThe typical M.O. of a fuckboy.โ€

โ€œStop it,โ€ Shannon scolded, still smiling. โ€œGibsie is not one of those.โ€

โ€œExcept that he is,โ€ Lizzie challenged dryly. โ€œAnd Claire is just one more in a long list of Thorโ€™s conquests.โ€ With a despondent look etched on her face, she looked at me. โ€œYouโ€™re such a fool.โ€ She shook her head. โ€œHeโ€™s going to ruin you.โ€

My hackles were immediately up, and I was instantly on the defense. โ€œLike youโ€™re in any position to judge me.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s that supposed to mean?โ€

โ€œGuys, stop, please โ€ฆ โ€

โ€œYou know exactly what that means,โ€ I shot back. โ€œSo just think about it before you start name-calling.โ€

โ€œClaire,โ€ Shannon tried to interject, begging me with her eyes not to feed the fire. โ€œJust take a sec, okay.โ€ Turning to Lizzie, she added, โ€œNobody knows how Gibsieโ€™s feeling exceptย Gibsie, so please letโ€™s just give him the benefit of the doubt here.โ€ She forced a smile before saying, โ€œHe clearly has feelings for Claire.โ€

โ€œThanks, Shan,โ€ I said, needing her reassurance in this moment.

โ€œItโ€™s true,โ€ she hurried to soothe. โ€œThat boy worships the ground you walk on, and the entire school knows it. I bet you any money thereโ€™s a perfectly plausible reason for him missing lunch today. In fact, I could almost guarantee that if I walked out there and asked Johnny, he would more than likely say that Gibs has detention for some disastrous prank or other.โ€ She offered me a supportive smile before adding, โ€œTrust me, Claire, there isnโ€™t one single believable scenario where that boy would choose to ignore you. He couldnโ€™t if he tried.โ€

โ€œBut what if he regrets what happened between us?โ€

โ€œHeย doesnโ€™t.โ€

โ€œBut what if heย does?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™sย notย going to happen.โ€

โ€œBut what if โ€ฆ โ€

โ€œOh please,โ€ Lizzie cut in, โ€œyouโ€™ll be a couple by the end of the week.โ€

My heart hammered excitedly. โ€œYou really think so?โ€

โ€œOf course,โ€ Shannon agreed with a smile.

โ€œAnd if thatโ€™s what you want then go for it,โ€ Lizzie added in a trembling voice. โ€œI clearly canโ€™t stop you. But donโ€™t expect me to stick around to watch it.โ€ Sniffling, she shook her head and moved for the bathroom door. โ€œYouโ€™ve made your choice and itโ€™s clearly him!โ€

โ€œLizzie, wait!โ€

She didnโ€™t wait.

Instead, she stormed out of the bathroom, letting the door slam shut behind her.

โ€œSheโ€™ll come around,โ€ Shannon offered, chewing on her lip nervously. โ€œGive her some time. Youโ€™ll see.โ€
