Chapter no 6

Taming 7 (Boys of Tommen, 5)

Our trip to the beach turned out to be a glorious one. Surrounded by friendly faces, and filled with sunshine, sandcastles, and seaside paddling, we celebrated our last days of freedom before school returned and the summer gave way to autumn.

In between spending copious amounts of time trying to drown each other in the ocean, Shan and I had lazed idly on the toasty sand for most of the evening, carefree and untroubled by the world that was waiting for us just around the corner.

โ€œRemember when I told you that beautiful boys with big muscles complicate everything?โ€ I declared several hours later, sprawled out on my belly, enjoying the last of the evening sun rays, while the boys tossed a ball around further up the beach. The sun was setting, the tents had been pitched, and I was reveling in the last wisps of heat. โ€œWell, I was right.โ€

โ€œUnderstatement of the century,โ€ Shan agreed from her perch beside me. โ€œBut theyโ€™re so pretty to look at.โ€

โ€œTrue.โ€ Pulling up on my elbows, I twisted around just in time to see Gerard leap into the air to catch the ball. โ€œOh, sweet baby Jesus.โ€ He looked so damn good today. Clad in nothing but a pair of white shorts, he filled every inch of his skin like a dream. No, like a demigod. Yeah, a demigod was so much more fitting.

โ€œI get it.โ€ Shannon smiled knowingly. โ€œI feel the same about Johnny.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s hard to concentrate, huh?โ€

โ€œDefinitely,โ€ she agreed. โ€œAnd then it gets deeper because you start to crave their words as much as their kisses.โ€

โ€œWhoa,โ€ I breathed. โ€œSounds intense.โ€

โ€œYou should tell Gibs how you feel, Claire.โ€

โ€œHe already knows how I feel,โ€ I replied, settling back down on my stomach. โ€œHeโ€™s just โ€ฆ Gerard.โ€

โ€œAnd youโ€™re Claire,โ€ she added. โ€œAnd together you make a perfect team.โ€

โ€œYeah, maybe.โ€

โ€œDefinitely,โ€ she assured me. โ€œItโ€™ll happen. I can feel it in my bones.โ€

I hope so.ย I changed the subject by saying, โ€œIโ€™m going to miss this. I wish we lived in a world where summer never ended.โ€

โ€œBut then we wouldnโ€™t have autumn,โ€ Shan offered, happy to follow my lead. โ€œAnd you know how much we love Octobers.โ€

โ€œTrue,โ€ I agreed dreamily. โ€œWoolly jumpers and falling leaves.โ€

โ€œHot chocolate and Halloween,โ€ she added with a wistful sigh.

โ€œBonfires.โ€

โ€œDark evenings.โ€

โ€œTrick or treating.โ€

โ€œSnuggling under blankets.โ€

โ€œOkay, new plan. Letโ€™s build a world full of Octobers.โ€

โ€œNow thatโ€™s a world I want to live in,โ€ Shan agreed.

โ€œWe can be queens.โ€

โ€œOr presidents.โ€

โ€œRulers.โ€

โ€œYes, joint rulers of all things autumn.โ€

โ€œGenius. Hey, Shan?โ€

โ€œHm?โ€

Rolling onto my side, I pushed my curls back and gave my bestie my full attention. โ€œDo you hold it against me?โ€

โ€œI would never hold anything against you, Claire,โ€ she replied, mirroring my actions.

I smiled sadly. โ€œYou donโ€™t even know what Iโ€™m referring to.โ€

โ€œBecause it doesnโ€™t matter.โ€ She reached out with her foot and poked my leg with her toe. โ€œIt would never happen.โ€

โ€œBut I knew, Shan. Iย knewย something was wrong in your house,โ€ I confessed, repeating a conversation weโ€™d had a couple of times thisย summer. โ€œI didnโ€™t do anything about it, and the guilt is still eating me.โ€

โ€œClaire, you have nothing to feel guilty about. You didnโ€™t know. Not really. I never told you anything. You had a feeling. And you did everything you could have done for me. Trust me, I know.โ€ Pulling up onto her knees, Shannon grabbed a hair tie off her wrist and pulled her hair into a makeshift bun. โ€œIโ€™m still here. I made it. He didnโ€™t beat me.โ€ Smiling softly, she gestured to herself and then our surroundings. โ€œAnd look at my life now.โ€

โ€œI know and Iโ€™m so thankful youโ€™re here,โ€ I strangled out, feeling overwhelmed with emotion.

Johnnyโ€™s family had taken Shannon and her brothers in when their parents died in a house fire earlier this year. A fire that had been purposefully set by their abusive, alcoholic father.

The six Lynch siblings had been through hell and back and had finally found a soft landing in the Kavanagh home.

Their oldest brother, Darren, was grown and lived up north. Meanwhile, Joey was in therapy for his addiction issues. Shannon and the three younger boys, Tadhg, Ollie, and Sean resided in the manor with the Kavanaghs. And boy were those kidsย thriving.

Springing forward, I threw my arms around her and squeezed tightly. โ€œI donโ€™t know what Iโ€™d do without you.โ€

โ€œOkay, whatโ€™s really wrong?โ€ she asked with a small chuckle, as she hugged me back.

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

โ€œSomethingโ€™s on your mind.โ€

โ€œHow can you tell?โ€

โ€œBecause youโ€™re an open book,โ€ Shannon explained. โ€œIโ€™m not going to force you into telling me anything, but know that you can, and Iโ€™ll never judge. No matter what.โ€

I pulled back to look at her. โ€œItโ€™s Liz,โ€ I admitted. โ€œI think she might be hurting herself again.โ€

โ€œAgain?โ€ Shannonโ€™s face paled. โ€œWhat do you mean again?โ€

โ€œAw crap, I keep forgetting you werenโ€™t around much back then. Evenย though weโ€™ve been friends forever, there are huge patches of time you werenโ€™t there when we were growing up.โ€

โ€œFocus, Claire,โ€ Shannon urged, sounding panicked. โ€œWhen did this happen before?โ€

โ€œAfter Caoimhe passed away.โ€ Swallowing deeply, I pressed a hand to my brow and fought the internal panic clawing at me. โ€œShe was cutting for a while back then.โ€

โ€œCutting?โ€ Her blue eyes widened in horror. โ€œAre you talking about self-harm?โ€

I nodded grimly. โ€œUm, it was a really dark time in her life, and I told my mam who then told her mam.โ€

โ€œGood,โ€ Shannon urged, offering me a supportive nod. โ€œThatโ€™s good, Claire.โ€

โ€œAnd I thought it helped, you know? Her parents got her into counselling, and it stopped, but then I saw her at the pool this morning and she has this huge scar on her thigh, and it looked so much like the ones I used to see on her โ€ฆ โ€ My words broke off and I blew out a shaky breath. โ€œShe said she fell on barbed wire, but thatโ€™s not true, Shan. I know it in my gut.โ€

โ€œOh God,โ€ Shannon whispered, covering her mouth with her hand. โ€œPoor Lizzie.โ€

โ€œSo, I guess Iโ€™m asking you to tell me what to do,โ€ I added, feeling nervous and uncertain. โ€œI donโ€™t want to upset her or make things harder for her than they already are, but I canโ€™t sit back and do nothing.โ€ย Like I did with you.

โ€œNo,โ€ Shannon agreed quietly.

โ€œSo, what do I do?โ€

โ€œWhat about talking to her about it?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s been pulling away from me for months,โ€ I explained, using my toe to dig a hole in the sand as I spoke. โ€œBecause of Gerard.โ€

โ€œBecause she blames Gibs for what happened between Mark and Caoimhe.โ€

โ€œYep. Pretty much.โ€ Releasing a pained sigh, I scooped up a handfulย of sand and then watched as it slowly trickled from my fingertips. โ€œI understand where sheโ€™s coming from. Really, I do. But I wonโ€™t ever walk away from him.โ€ย Not even for Lizzie.ย โ€œAnd she sees my friendship with him as one giant betrayal to her.โ€ I shrugged, feeling helpless. โ€œThe closer I get to Gerard, the further Lizzie pulls away.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s a horrible situation to be put in,โ€ Shannon offered, reaching over to cover my hand with hers. โ€œOne I think youโ€™ve been doing a wonderful job of navigating.โ€

โ€œI used to think so, too,โ€ I admitted. โ€œThat I was good at navigating my friendships with them both. But not lately.โ€ย Not since the last camping trip. โ€œNot anymore.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m going to help,โ€ Shannon declared, squeezing my hand. โ€œYouโ€™re not alone in this. Sheโ€™s our best friend and Iโ€™m right here with you, Claire. Weโ€™ll do something about this.โ€

โ€œWhat though?โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ll talk to Liz,โ€ she replied. โ€œAnd weโ€™ll talk to her mother, too.โ€

โ€œShe might freak,โ€ I offered warily.

โ€œShe might,โ€ Shannon agreed with a nod. โ€œBut itโ€™s a risk worth taking.โ€

โ€œSorry weโ€™re so late, guys. I didnโ€™t get off work until eight,โ€ Katie announced, causing our conversation to be cut short when she hurried up the beach in our direction. โ€œRoom for one more?โ€

Clearing her throat, Shannon smiled brightly and patted her towel. โ€œAlways.โ€

โ€œThanks,โ€ Katie replied, sinking down on the edge of Shannonโ€™s towel. Her cheeks were flushed, and she was still wearing her work uniform. โ€œI have no idea whatโ€™s after getting into that brother of yours, Claire, but heโ€™s like a monk thatโ€™s taken a vow of silence.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ I glanced over my shoulder and spotted my brother who had just arrived. Clad in board shorts and an oversized hoodie, he pitched their tent with effortless ease before turning his attention to the makeshift fire that was dying out.

Oh God.

This was my fault.

It had clearly gone very badly with Lizzie earlier.

โ€œIโ€™ll be right back,โ€ I announced, climbing to my feet. โ€œTwo secs, guys.โ€

โ€œCan you grab a hoodie for me?โ€ Shan called after me. โ€œThe sunโ€™s going down and itโ€™s getting chilly.โ€

โ€œOn it,โ€ I called back, not stopping until I reached my brother. โ€œAre you okay?โ€

โ€œNever better,โ€ he replied, attention glued to the flames he was teasing back to life. โ€œYou?โ€

โ€œCome on, Hugh.โ€ I stepped closer. โ€œWhat happened?โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

โ€œWith Lizzie,โ€ I pushed. โ€œWas she mean to you?โ€

โ€œWhen isnโ€™t she mean, Claire?โ€ he replied flatly.

Oh God, sheย wasย mean.

โ€œYou know she doesnโ€™t mean it, right?โ€ I tried to say. โ€œItโ€™s her coping mechanism.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t need anyone to explain Lizzie Youngโ€™s coping mechanisms to me,โ€ came his hard response. โ€œIโ€™m well versed in them.โ€

โ€œSo, you asked her about it?โ€ I chewed on my lip, anxious. โ€œAbout the cutting?โ€

โ€œYes, Claire, I asked her about it.โ€

โ€œAnd?โ€

โ€œAnd it was a huge fucking mistake,โ€ Hugh spat, tossing the stick in the fire. โ€œThereโ€™s a reason we steer clear of each other, and I was reminded of that today.โ€

โ€œHugh,โ€ I began to say, but he shook his head.

โ€œIโ€™m done, Claire.โ€ Rolling his shoulders, he pushed the sleeves of his hoodie up to his elbows and stalked off in the direction of the boys, kicking at the sand as he went. โ€œAsk Feely to talk to her because Iโ€™m so fucking done.โ€

โ€œSee?โ€ Katie exclaimed when I returned to her and Shan. โ€œHeโ€™s clearly in a mood about something, right?โ€

โ€œMaybe,โ€ I mumbled, feeling terrible for pushing my brother intoย doing something that I knew full well would affect him.

โ€œLiz!โ€ Shannon squealed, scrambling to her feet and making a beeline for the sand dune our willowy friend was standing on. Standing beside her with his arms full of camping equipment was Pierce. โ€œYou came!โ€

โ€œI came,โ€ she laughed, reciprocating Shannonโ€™s hug with a rare show of affection.

Shifting in discomfort, Pierce stepped around the girls and headed straight for the boys who were on their way to investigate our new guests.

โ€œI thought you said you werenโ€™t coming?โ€ Patrick called out good-naturedly, shielding his eyes from the late evening sun, as he looked up at her.

โ€œYeah, well, I figured youโ€™d be bored without me,โ€ Lizzie called back, covering her mouth with her hands to send her voice further.

โ€œPeace,โ€ Katie mumbled under her breath. โ€œWe would have hadย peaceย without her.โ€

Choosing not to call her out on her mutterings, because in all honesty the girl wasnโ€™t wrong, I stood up to make room for my brother, who had joined his girlfriend.

Dusting the sand off my thighs, I offered Lizzie a big wave. She began to reciprocate with a wave of her own but quickly stopped and veered her attention back to Shannon when I was joined by the boys.

โ€œNo fighting,โ€ Johnny was instructing Gerard. He had his hands on Gerardโ€™s shoulders like he was priming him for a boxing match. โ€œNo matter what she says, no matter how low she hits you below the belt, no bleeding fighting, Gibs.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve got it,โ€ Gerard grumbled, shaking out of Johnnyโ€™s hold. โ€œI wonโ€™t even look in her direction.โ€

โ€œGood man yourself,โ€ Johnny encouraged. โ€œBecause we want a peaceful night.โ€

โ€œYes, we do,โ€ Katie agreed, hooking arms with Hugh. โ€œPeaceful.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ll have no drama from me, boss,โ€ Gerard offered in a teasing tone, attention locked on me as he prowled towards me with mischiefย dancing in his eyes. โ€œI only have eyes for one blonde.โ€

He had a twinkle of mischief in his eyes that was addictive. Seriously, being with Gerard felt like when you were five and waiting for Santa to come on Christmas Eve. He drew every element of emotion from my heart, and he did it without breaking a sweat.

โ€œDonโ€™t you dare,โ€ I squealed, as I scampered to the side and narrowly avoided his playful onslaught. โ€œGerard Gibson, Iโ€™m warning you โ€“ ahhh!โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s that, lover? You fancy a moonlight stroll on the beach?โ€ Throwing me over his shoulder, Gerard proceeded to run down the beach. โ€œAnything for you, my sweetheart.โ€

โ€œOh my God,โ€ I half-laughed, half-screamed, as my face bounced helplessly against his back. โ€œLet me down or Iโ€™ll pinch your ass.โ€

โ€œIs that a promise?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll do it,โ€ I warned through fits of laughter. โ€œI will, Gerard.โ€ Sliding my hand into the waistband of his shorts, I pushed my hand inside. โ€œOoh, whatโ€™s this? A round, hairy ass cheek!โ€

โ€œOkay, okay,โ€ he laughed, surprising me by how quickly he forfeited, and set me down on my feet. โ€œYou win.โ€

โ€œI do?โ€ I replied, breathless. โ€œSince when?โ€

โ€œSince I canโ€™t take it,โ€ he chuckled, still smiling down at me.

โ€œCanโ€™t take what?โ€

โ€œBeing touched there.โ€

It was only then that I realized that I still had my hand in his shorts. โ€œOh crap.โ€ Cheeks flaming, I quickly yanked my hand free and grinned up at him. โ€œOops.โ€

โ€œOops,โ€ he mimicked affectionately, hands resting on my shoulders.

โ€œWhy canโ€™t you take being touched there?โ€

โ€œBecause I have the worst tickles known to mankind on my hole.โ€

โ€œTickles.โ€ I arched a brow. โ€œOn your ass?โ€

โ€œYep. So bad.โ€ He nodded eagerly. โ€œI lose total control of my limbs. Seriously. Try it and Iโ€™m like a ninja with a black belt.โ€

โ€œAnd how do you know you have a tickly ass?โ€

โ€œDo you really want to know the answer to that question?โ€

โ€œUh, no,โ€ I confirmed with a grimace. โ€œOn second thoughts, donโ€™t tell me.โ€

โ€œCome on,โ€ he chuckled, draping his arm over my shoulders. โ€œLetโ€™s take that moonlight stroll.โ€

โ€œThis is entirely inappropriate behavior.โ€

โ€œDuly noted. Should we continue?โ€

โ€œOf course.โ€

โ€œOkay then.โ€

โ€œHey, remember that song about the summertime?โ€ Entwining my hand with his, I twirled out of his hold before returning to his side. โ€œThe one our dads used to play all the time when we were little.โ€

Shifting our bodies so that he was behind me, he wrapped his arms around my waist and leaned in close. โ€œโ€˜In the Summertimeโ€™ by Mungo Jerry.โ€ Mimicking the singerโ€™s voice, he broke into the chorus, giving me a hilarious rendition of one of my favorite childhood songs. โ€œIs that the one?โ€

โ€œYes!โ€ Biting down on my lip with sheer delight, I gripped his forearms for dear life when he began to swing me around in circles. โ€œOh my God,โ€ I squealed, feeling safer in this boyโ€™s arms than anywhere else on earth. โ€œPlease donโ€™t let go.โ€

โ€œNever,โ€ he vowed. โ€œNot in a million years.โ€
