Chapter no 25

Curvy Girls Can't Date Quarterbacks

ZARAย and I sat on her bed, her laptop propped up on a stack of pillows in front of us. In the bottom left corner of the screen, Callie said, โ€œYou saw DP?โ€

โ€œForget that!โ€ Jordan cried on her third of the screen. โ€œYou kissed Beckett!โ€

โ€œBarely!โ€ I said. โ€œIโ€™m not even sure it counts.โ€

Zara nudged me. โ€œYou know what they say. Third timeโ€™s a charm.โ€

Even from her small square on the screen, Gingerโ€™s wide smile was unmistakable. โ€œMerritt isย soย going down!โ€

โ€œAnd youโ€™re going to be dating the homecoming king!โ€ Callie added. My smile couldnโ€™t be bigger than it was right now. My cheeks hurt.

Like, really hurt, but the second I tried to stop, I remembered feeling Beckettโ€™s breath on my lips, the graze of his mouth on mine. That moment was the textbook definition of perfect. I couldnโ€™t imagine what really kissing him would be like.

โ€œWhatโ€™s our next move?โ€ Jordan asked. โ€œHow does she seal the deal?โ€

That thought was sobering. A near kiss with Beckett didnโ€™t guarantee me an actual kiss, much less a homecoming date. Heโ€™d driven me back to the school to get my car and hadnโ€™t made a move to kiss me again. My lips practically ached from the desire to feel his on mine, but Iโ€™d never been kissed before. I had no idea what it would be like. How amazing it would be. I didnโ€™t want to ruin or rush it.

A masculine voice came through the phone. โ€œShe has to go to Spikeโ€™s party this weekend.โ€

Zara and I leaned closer at the same time, bumping our heads together.

โ€œOuch!โ€ I said.

โ€œWhoโ€™s that?โ€ Zara asked, rubbing her head. โ€œCarson?โ€

โ€œSorry.โ€ A sheepish-looking Carson came onto the screen with Callie. โ€œThe guys are going to Spikeโ€™s for karaoke night after the game. If Beckett takes you there, as his date, then itโ€™s official, right? Everyone will know.โ€

My throat constricted at the idea of going to the areaโ€™s only club that allowed sixteen-and-over. โ€œI donโ€™t know if thatโ€™s a good idea.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ Zara and Carson asked at the same time.

โ€œFirst of all, itโ€™s in Brentwood,โ€ I said. โ€œThey hate us. Second of all, do I look like the kind of girl who belongs in a place like that? Even if Beckett wanted to bring me, Iโ€™d get made fun of the entire time.โ€

Now on the screen, Carson shook his head. โ€œWhatโ€™s with you girls and feeling like you have to be perfect to go out in public?โ€ he asked. โ€œItโ€™s not like itโ€™s a sale barn and they weigh you before you can go in! Just because the rest of the school acts like thereโ€™s a weight limit on hotness doesnโ€™t mean theyโ€™re right. Or that you need to buy into it.โ€

His words struck my heart. Was I really letting my waistline, expanded from a medical condition not of my doing, determine how I lived my life? The reality of it made me feel more ashamed than Iโ€™d ever been of my weight.

โ€œExactly what I keep trying to tell them,โ€ Zara said. She squeezed my shoulder, and I had to swallow to clear the tightness in my throat.

โ€œOkay,โ€ I said.

โ€œYouโ€™ll do it?โ€ Carson asked.

My smile came back, giddy excitement and nerves rushing through me. โ€œIโ€™ll do it,โ€ I said, then added, โ€œif he asks.โ€

โ€œOh,โ€ Carson said, โ€œheโ€™ll ask.โ€

We all asked various versions of HOW DO YOU KNOW? But all he had in return was a sly smile and an excuse about Callieโ€™s cell reception that had their faces disappearing from the chat.

Jordan rolled her eyes. โ€œBoys.โ€

Gingerโ€™s head turned away from the screen, and when she looked back, she had a pained expression. โ€œThatโ€™s bedtime for me. Talk to you on Monday!โ€

Jordan shrugged. โ€œGuess I better call my boyfriend before bed.โ€ She sighed, then added, โ€œIf he answers.โ€

We waved goodbye, and then Zara shut her computer.

โ€œFourth and goal.โ€ She grinned.

With a smile, I said, โ€œSo youย haveย been paying attention to more than the football pants.โ€

She laughed. โ€œOne of us had to.โ€
