Chapter no 17 – Kai

Caught Up (Windy City Series Book 3)

โ€œDadda.โ€

The sweet scent of sugar fills my nose as I breathe a deep inhale. โ€œDadda.โ€

My body is melted into the mattress, my arms filled with . . .ย Miller. Miller is in my bed, or rather Iโ€™m in hers.

Inhaling again, I pull her closer until her entire body is on top of mine with her head tucked into the crook of my neck.

She feels like heaven. Warm and cozy. She also feels like mine. โ€œDadda.โ€

My eyes shoot open to find my son at the foot of the bed, perched on Montyโ€™s arm, the two of them looking down at us.

Max is wearing a smile. Monty isnโ€™t. โ€œShit,โ€ I breathe out.

Iโ€™m a thirty-two-year-old man getting caught in bed by someoneโ€™s father. โ€œWell, Iโ€™m not sure how Iโ€™m going to scrub this visual out of my brain,โ€

he says dryly.

Miller stirs when she hears her dadโ€™s voice, but itโ€™s not enough to fully wake her. Instead, she nuzzles further into me, slinging her leg over my hips where Iโ€™ve got a raging case of morning wood going on. I could not be more thankful this hotel bed has a thick comforter.

โ€œDadda,โ€ Max says again, and Monty puts him on the mattress, allowing him to crawl over to us.

โ€œHi, Maxie.โ€ My voice is all morning rasp as he climbs over my torso. โ€œI missed you last night.โ€

He settles on my stomach, head on my chest, looking at a sleeping Miller. I wrap an arm around his little body so Iโ€™ve got them both as he cautiously reaches out to touch her septum ring. His tiny touch is enough to wake her and, as she opens her eyes, she looks right at my son, a sleepy smile blooming on her lips.

โ€œMorning, Bug.โ€

He smiles right back at her.

This moment would be a whole lot sweeter, the two of them cozy on my chest together, if Monty wasnโ€™t still staring down at me.

โ€œMorning, Millie,โ€ her dad says.

Miller whips around, realizing heโ€™s here. โ€œWhat the hell, Dad?โ€ she asks, quickly covering herself with the blanket, not that thereโ€™s anything to hide.

Sheโ€™s lucky she doesnโ€™t have to deal with a raging boner the way I currently am.

โ€œAce,โ€ Monty starts, heading back to my room. โ€œI think itโ€™s time we have a conversation.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t think we have to do that.โ€ โ€œGet your ass in here!โ€

Miller rolls her eyes, flopping over to the other side of the bed and taking Max with her, tickling his belly to keep him occupied while I go get reamed by her dad.

After I handle my business in the bathroom, I meet Monty in my room, closing the adjoining door behind me.

โ€œItโ€™s not what it looks like,โ€ I tell him, finding a shirt to cover up my chest.

โ€œI donโ€™t give a shit what it looks like. What you two do is none of my business but Ace, sheโ€™s leaving in less than two months.โ€

I pause in my tracks. โ€œWhy the hell does everyone feel the need to keep reminding me of that?โ€

โ€œBecause Iโ€™m looking out for you.โ€

โ€œWell, you donโ€™t have to do that. I only slept in there because your snoring ass was hogging my bed.โ€

A smile ticks on his lips.

โ€œIโ€™m serious, Monty. Please donโ€™t waste your time giving me the overprotective dad speech. It isnโ€™t needed.โ€

He holds his hands up. โ€œThis is not that. I just wanted to talk to you because Miller has a life sheโ€™s going back to.โ€

โ€œJesus, I know.โ€

โ€œLet me finish,โ€ he says. โ€œMiller has a life sheโ€™s going back to, a life sheโ€™s worked her ass off for. You two are adults. Whatever you do in your free time is between you two, but Iโ€™m askingโ€”no, Iโ€™mย tellingย you, if there

comes a time where you find yourself wanting to ask her not to go back to that life, that you talk to me first.โ€

What the hell? I would never ask that of her. I know what this summer is to her. She made it clear last night when she gave me a moment to stop our kiss that sheโ€™s simply passing through. Sheโ€™s got her entire lifeโ€™s dream waiting for her.

โ€œItโ€™s not like that.โ€

Monty shrugs. โ€œKeep it in mind. Come to me if that changes for you.โ€
