โThis seems familiar,โ Ithan muttered to Hypaxia as they stood on the Black Dock, each clutching a Death Mark in their hands. โYou, me, the Under-King โฆโ
โOur best friend,โ Hypaxia said wryly, the mists from the Bone Quarter an impenetrable wall across the river. She gestured to the water. โShall we?โ
Ithan nodded, and they flicked their Death Marks into the river. They landed with a softย plunk, and ripples spread outward in only one directionโsouth. Toward the Bone Quarter. They vanished into the mist.
In the ensuing silence, Ithan dared say, โJesiba said you and the Governor were, ah โฆ together. How long?โ
She threw him a pained wince. โA while. But not anymore.โ
โEven while she was with Ephraim?โ
โHer arrangement with Ephraim is a political contract. What she and I haveย โฆ had โฆโ She shook her head, the moonlight silvering her dark curls. โIโm sure Jesiba said I was naรฏve.โ
โMaybe,โ he hedged.
Hypaxia looked at where her Death Mark had disappeared under the surface. โEveryone told me, you know. That Archangels arenโt to be trusted. That theyโve got those secret training camps that indoctrinate them, that theyโre puppets for the Asteri. But sheย spent all thatย time in Nena, and I thought it had removed her from their influence.โ She chewed on her lip, then added, โApparently it gave her incentive to do whatever it took to get her off that frozen bit of land.โ
โWe โฆ we all make bad decisions.โ He blew out a breath. โGods, that sounded dumb.โ
Hypaxia laughed quietly. โItโs appreciated nonetheless.โ She sobered. โBut when I learned what sheโd done โฆย Well. I miss my mother most days, but especially lately. Especially after everything with Celestina.โ She indicated the mists across the way. โSo I understand why you seek out your brother.โ
โIโm sorry about your mother,โ he offered.
โMost people tell me I should be over her passing. But โฆโ Her shoulders bowed. โI donโt know if there will ever come a day when I donโt feel like thereโs a holeย in my heart where she used to be.โ
โYeah,โ he said quietly, his own chest aching. โI know the feeling.โ He cleared his throat. โSo you couldnโt, uh, raise your mom with your necromancy?โ
โNo,โ Hypaxia said gravely. โShe took steps to ensure that her soul did not fall into the clutches of the Under-King. And even if I could, she would resent me for using it for something so โฆ selfish.โ
โSheโsย your mom, though.โ
โShe was also my queen.โ Hypaxiaโs chin lifted. โAnd she would be ashamed to learn that I have defected from the witches and yielded my crown. So, no. I donโt want to see her. I couldnโt face her, even if I had the chance.โ
โArenโt you still a witch, though? I mean, yeahโyouโre now in Flame and Shadow, but you didnโt stop being a witch.โ Jesiba may have rejected the title,ย but that had been her choice.
โIโm still a witch,โ Hypaxia said, hands curling at her sides. โThat can never be taken away from me.โ
Ithan surveyed the black planks beneath his feet. He had to arrange the Sailing for the Prime. For Sabine, too, he supposed.
Did he, though? The Primeโs soul was gone. There was nothing to offer up to the Bone Quarter beyond an empty body. And if theย people ofย Lunathion saw the Primeโs boat tip, not understanding why โฆ he couldnโt allow it.
Heโd gladly give Sabine the indignity of letting everyone see her boat tip. Heโd also be glad to let her soul live on in the Bone Quarter until it was time to be turned into mystery meat for the Asteri, but heโd have to decide whether she deserved a Sailing in the first place.
Gods, he wished Bryce was with him.ย Sheโd have an idea.ย Just cut her up real small and shove her down the garbage disposal.
Ithan snorted and offered up a prayer to Lunaโs bright face above him that his friend was indeed safeโand on the move.
A black boat glided out of the mists ahead, aiming straight for Ithan and Hypaxia, waiting on the dock. Exactly as Jesiba had promised it would.
Ithan swallowed hard. โCabโs here.โ
Ithanย knew he was Prime of the Valbaran Wolves, but he certainly didnโt feel like it. The whole thing was a joke. He was just โฆ a dude. Granted, one with more power than heโd realized, but now there were people depending on him. He had to make decisions.
At least as sunball captain, heโd had coaches telling him what to do. Now he was coach and captain rolled into one.
And, given how much heโd fuckedย up lately, how every choice to help Sigrid had only led her toward an absolutely disastrous fate โฆ Gods, he really didnโt feel like Prime at all.
But he tried to at least look like itโback straight, shoulders squaredโas he and Hypaxia stood before the Under-King in a gray-stoned temple to Urd.
The Under-King lounged on a throne beneath a behemoth statue of a figure holding a black metal bowlย between her upraised hands. Symbols were carved all over the bowl, continuing down her fingers, her arms, her body. Ithan could only assume it was meant to represent Urd. No other temples ever depicted the goddess, no one even daredโmost people claimed that fate was impossible to portray in any one form. But it seemed that the dead,ย unlike the living, had a vision of her. And those symbols runningย from the bowl onto her skin โฆ they were like tattoos.
They looked oddly familiar. Ithan didnโt have time to ponder it as he and Hypaxia inclined their heads to the Under-King.
โThank you for the audience,โ Ithan said, trying to keep his breathing normal. Praying that none of those hounds the Under-King had sent after them on the Autumnal Equinox were lurking around in the misty shadows.
Atย least there werenโt any Reapers. No sign of Sigrid, wherever sheโd gone. One more clusterfuck for him to deal withโbut another day. If he managed to live another day, of course.
The Under-Kingโs bony, withered fingers clicked on the stone arms of his throne. โPrime,โ he said to Ithan, โIโm honored to be your first political visit. Though I believe protocol dictates that a meeting with the Governorย should have been your priority.โ A knowing glance at Hypaxia. โUnless present company makes such things โฆ uncomfortable.โ
Hypaxiaโs eyes flickered, but she said nothing.
Theyโd come here for a reason, so Ithan ignored the Under-Kingโs mocking and said, โLook, uh โฆ Your Majesty.โ The Under-King gave him a smile that was all browned, aged teeth. Ithan tried not to shudder. โJesiba Roga said youย agreed that we could make a request. Iโd like to speak to my brother, Connor Holstrom.โ
The Under-King turned to Hypaxia. โDid I not give you duties to attend to?โ
โHanding out blood bags to vampyrs isnโt a good use of my time,โ Hypaxia said with impressive authority.
โShall I reassign you to waiting on the Reapers?โ A cruel smile. โTheyโd enjoy a taste or two of you, girl.โ
โI only want fiveย minutes with my brother,โ Ithan interrupted.
โTo do what?โ The Under-King leaned forward.
โI need to tell him a few things.โ
โThe goodbye you never got to say,โ the Under-King taunted.
โYes,โ Ithan said sharply.
The Under-King angled his head. โAnd you promise not to warn him of what awaits?โ
โDoes it matter if I do? Heโs trapped here already,โ Ithan said, gesturing to the temple, the barrenย land beyond.
โI have no interest in civil unrestโeven amongst the dead,โ the Under-King said. โAnd too much unrest would bring unwanted attention and questions.โ From the Asteri, no doubt.
Ithan crossed his arms. โThat didnโt seem to be your position when you sold my friends out to Pippa Spetsos.โ
โPippa Spetsos stood to assist in expanding my kingdom significantly,โ the creature said. โItย was an investment for my Reapersโto keep them contented and fed.โ
Ithan blocked out the flash of the Primeโs broken body, the way Sigrid had sucked out his soul.
Hypaxia said calmly, โWhy did the Reapers first defect from Apollion and join you?โ
The Under-King flinched. โDo not speak his name here.โ
โMy apologies,โ Hypaxia murmured. She didnโt sound at all sorry.
But the Under-King settledย himself. โIn Hel, the Reapers fed on and ruled the vampyrs, and when the vampyrs defected to this world, the Reapers followed their food source. And found the other beings on Midgard to be a veritable feast. So they have left the vampyrs to themselves, feeding as they please on the rest of the populace.โ
Ithan couldnโt stop his shudder this time. He couldnโt imagine what Hel was like, if Reapersย and vampyrs had just been walking aboutโ
โBut you are not from Hel,โ Hypaxia said.
โNo.โ The Under-Kingโs milky eyes settled on Ithan. โI was birthed by the Void, but my people โฆโ He smiled cruelly at Ithan. โThey were not unknown to your own ancestors, wolf. I crept through when they charged so blindly into Midgard. This place is much better suited to my needs than the caves and barrows I wasย confined to.โ
Ithan reeled. โYou came from the shiftersโ world?โ
โYou were not known as shifters then, boy.โ
โThen whatโโ
โAnd she,โ the Under-King went on, gesturing to that unusual depiction of Urd towering above him, โwas not a goddess, but a force that governed worlds. A cauldron of life, brimming with the language of creation. Urd, they call her hereโa bastardized version of her trueย name. Wyrd, we called her in that old world.โ
โThat is all well and good,โ Hypaxia said, โbut my friendโs requestโโ
โGo speak to your brother, boy,โ the Under-King drawled, almost melancholy. As if all the talk of his old world had exhausted him. โYou have seven minutes.โ
Ithanโs mouth dried out. โBut whereโโ
The Under-King pointed to the exit behind them. โThere.โ
Ithan turned. And thereย was Connor, as vibrant as heโd ever been in life, standing in the temple doorway.
