Chapter no 81

House of Flame and Shadow (Crescent City, #3)

โ€œThis seems familiar,โ€ Ithan muttered to Hypaxia as they stood on the Black Dock, each clutching a Death Mark in their hands. โ€œYou, me, the Under-King โ€ฆโ€

โ€œOur best friend,โ€ Hypaxia said wryly, the mists from the Bone Quarter an impenetrable wall across the river. She gestured to the water. โ€œShall we?โ€

Ithan nodded, and they flicked their Death Marks into the river. They landed with a softย plunk, and ripples spread outward in only one directionโ€”south. Toward the Bone Quarter. They vanished into the mist.

In the ensuing silence, Ithan dared say, โ€œJesiba said you and the Governor were, ah โ€ฆ together. How long?โ€

She threw him a pained wince. โ€œA while. But not anymore.โ€

โ€œEven while she was with Ephraim?โ€

โ€œHer arrangement with Ephraim is a political contract. What she and I haveย โ€ฆ had โ€ฆโ€ She shook her head, the moonlight silvering her dark curls. โ€œIโ€™m sure Jesiba said I was naรฏve.โ€

โ€œMaybe,โ€ he hedged.

Hypaxia looked at where her Death Mark had disappeared under the surface. โ€œEveryone told me, you know. That Archangels arenโ€™t to be trusted. That theyโ€™ve got those secret training camps that indoctrinate them, that theyโ€™re puppets for the Asteri. But sheย spent all thatย time in Nena, and I thought it had removed her from their influence.โ€ She chewed on her lip, then added, โ€œApparently it gave her incentive to do whatever it took to get her off that frozen bit of land.โ€

โ€œWe โ€ฆ we all make bad decisions.โ€ He blew out a breath. โ€œGods, that sounded dumb.โ€

Hypaxia laughed quietly. โ€œItโ€™s appreciated nonetheless.โ€ She sobered. โ€œBut when I learned what sheโ€™d done โ€ฆย Well. I miss my mother most days, but especially lately. Especially after everything with Celestina.โ€ She indicated the mists across the way. โ€œSo I understand why you seek out your brother.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry about your mother,โ€ he offered.

โ€œMost people tell me I should be over her passing. But โ€ฆโ€ Her shoulders bowed. โ€œI donโ€™t know if there will ever come a day when I donโ€™t feel like thereโ€™s a holeย in my heart where she used to be.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ he said quietly, his own chest aching. โ€œI know the feeling.โ€ He cleared his throat. โ€œSo you couldnโ€™t, uh, raise your mom with your necromancy?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Hypaxia said gravely. โ€œShe took steps to ensure that her soul did not fall into the clutches of the Under-King. And even if I could, she would resent me for using it for something so โ€ฆ selfish.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™sย your mom, though.โ€

โ€œShe was also my queen.โ€ Hypaxiaโ€™s chin lifted. โ€œAnd she would be ashamed to learn that I have defected from the witches and yielded my crown. So, no. I donโ€™t want to see her. I couldnโ€™t face her, even if I had the chance.โ€

โ€œArenโ€™t you still a witch, though? I mean, yeahโ€”youโ€™re now in Flame and Shadow, but you didnโ€™t stop being a witch.โ€ Jesiba may have rejected the title,ย but that had been her choice.

โ€œIโ€™m still a witch,โ€ Hypaxia said, hands curling at her sides. โ€œThat can never be taken away from me.โ€

Ithan surveyed the black planks beneath his feet. He had to arrange the Sailing for the Prime. For Sabine, too, he supposed.

Did he, though? The Primeโ€™s soul was gone. There was nothing to offer up to the Bone Quarter beyond an empty body. And if theย people ofย Lunathion saw the Primeโ€™s boat tip, not understanding why โ€ฆ he couldnโ€™t allow it.

Heโ€™d gladly give Sabine the indignity of letting everyone see her boat tip. Heโ€™d also be glad to let her soul live on in the Bone Quarter until it was time to be turned into mystery meat for the Asteri, but heโ€™d have to decide whether she deserved a Sailing in the first place.

Gods, he wished Bryce was with him.ย Sheโ€™d have an idea.ย Just cut her up real small and shove her down the garbage disposal.

Ithan snorted and offered up a prayer to Lunaโ€™s bright face above him that his friend was indeed safeโ€”and on the move.

A black boat glided out of the mists ahead, aiming straight for Ithan and Hypaxia, waiting on the dock. Exactly as Jesiba had promised it would.

Ithan swallowed hard. โ€œCabโ€™s here.โ€

Ithanย knew he was Prime of the Valbaran Wolves, but he certainly didnโ€™t feel like it. The whole thing was a joke. He was just โ€ฆ a dude. Granted, one with more power than heโ€™d realized, but now there were people depending on him. He had to make decisions.

At least as sunball captain, heโ€™d had coaches telling him what to do. Now he was coach and captain rolled into one.

And, given how much heโ€™d fuckedย up lately, how every choice to help Sigrid had only led her toward an absolutely disastrous fate โ€ฆ Gods, he really didnโ€™t feel like Prime at all.

But he tried to at least look like itโ€”back straight, shoulders squaredโ€”as he and Hypaxia stood before the Under-King in a gray-stoned temple to Urd.

The Under-King lounged on a throne beneath a behemoth statue of a figure holding a black metal bowlย between her upraised hands. Symbols were carved all over the bowl, continuing down her fingers, her arms, her body. Ithan could only assume it was meant to represent Urd. No other temples ever depicted the goddess, no one even daredโ€”most people claimed that fate was impossible to portray in any one form. But it seemed that the dead,ย unlike the living, had a vision of her. And those symbols runningย from the bowl onto her skin โ€ฆ they were like tattoos.

They looked oddly familiar. Ithan didnโ€™t have time to ponder it as he and Hypaxia inclined their heads to the Under-King.

โ€œThank you for the audience,โ€ Ithan said, trying to keep his breathing normal. Praying that none of those hounds the Under-King had sent after them on the Autumnal Equinox were lurking around in the misty shadows.

Atย least there werenโ€™t any Reapers. No sign of Sigrid, wherever sheโ€™d gone. One more clusterfuck for him to deal withโ€”but another day. If he managed to live another day, of course.

The Under-Kingโ€™s bony, withered fingers clicked on the stone arms of his throne. โ€œPrime,โ€ he said to Ithan, โ€œIโ€™m honored to be your first political visit. Though I believe protocol dictates that a meeting with the Governorย should have been your priority.โ€ A knowing glance at Hypaxia. โ€œUnless present company makes such things โ€ฆ uncomfortable.โ€

Hypaxiaโ€™s eyes flickered, but she said nothing.

Theyโ€™d come here for a reason, so Ithan ignored the Under-Kingโ€™s mocking and said, โ€œLook, uh โ€ฆ Your Majesty.โ€ The Under-King gave him a smile that was all browned, aged teeth. Ithan tried not to shudder. โ€œJesiba Roga said youย agreed that we could make a request. Iโ€™d like to speak to my brother, Connor Holstrom.โ€

The Under-King turned to Hypaxia. โ€œDid I not give you duties to attend to?โ€

โ€œHanding out blood bags to vampyrs isnโ€™t a good use of my time,โ€ Hypaxia said with impressive authority.

โ€œShall I reassign you to waiting on the Reapers?โ€ A cruel smile. โ€œTheyโ€™d enjoy a taste or two of you, girl.โ€

โ€œI only want fiveย minutes with my brother,โ€ Ithan interrupted.

โ€œTo do what?โ€ The Under-King leaned forward.

โ€œI need to tell him a few things.โ€

โ€œThe goodbye you never got to say,โ€ the Under-King taunted.

โ€œYes,โ€ Ithan said sharply.

The Under-King angled his head. โ€œAnd you promise not to warn him of what awaits?โ€

โ€œDoes it matter if I do? Heโ€™s trapped here already,โ€ Ithan said, gesturing to the temple, the barrenย land beyond.

โ€œI have no interest in civil unrestโ€”even amongst the dead,โ€ the Under-King said. โ€œAnd too much unrest would bring unwanted attention and questions.โ€ From the Asteri, no doubt.

Ithan crossed his arms. โ€œThat didnโ€™t seem to be your position when you sold my friends out to Pippa Spetsos.โ€

โ€œPippa Spetsos stood to assist in expanding my kingdom significantly,โ€ the creature said. โ€œItย was an investment for my Reapersโ€”to keep them contented and fed.โ€

Ithan blocked out the flash of the Primeโ€™s broken body, the way Sigrid had sucked out his soul.

Hypaxia said calmly, โ€œWhy did the Reapers first defect from Apollion and join you?โ€

The Under-King flinched. โ€œDo not speak his name here.โ€

โ€œMy apologies,โ€ Hypaxia murmured. She didnโ€™t sound at all sorry.

But the Under-King settledย himself. โ€œIn Hel, the Reapers fed on and ruled the vampyrs, and when the vampyrs defected to this world, the Reapers followed their food source. And found the other beings on Midgard to be a veritable feast. So they have left the vampyrs to themselves, feeding as they please on the rest of the populace.โ€

Ithan couldnโ€™t stop his shudder this time. He couldnโ€™t imagine what Hel was like, if Reapersย and vampyrs had just been walking aboutโ€”

โ€œBut you are not from Hel,โ€ Hypaxia said.

โ€œNo.โ€ The Under-Kingโ€™s milky eyes settled on Ithan. โ€œI was birthed by the Void, but my people โ€ฆโ€ He smiled cruelly at Ithan. โ€œThey were not unknown to your own ancestors, wolf. I crept through when they charged so blindly into Midgard. This place is much better suited to my needs than the caves and barrows I wasย confined to.โ€

Ithan reeled. โ€œYou came from the shiftersโ€™ world?โ€

โ€œYou were not known as shifters then, boy.โ€

โ€œThen whatโ€”โ€

โ€œAnd she,โ€ the Under-King went on, gesturing to that unusual depiction of Urd towering above him, โ€œwas not a goddess, but a force that governed worlds. A cauldron of life, brimming with the language of creation. Urd, they call her hereโ€”a bastardized version of her trueย name. Wyrd, we called her in that old world.โ€

โ€œThat is all well and good,โ€ Hypaxia said, โ€œbut my friendโ€™s requestโ€”โ€

โ€œGo speak to your brother, boy,โ€ the Under-King drawled, almost melancholy. As if all the talk of his old world had exhausted him. โ€œYou have seven minutes.โ€

Ithanโ€™s mouth dried out. โ€œBut whereโ€”โ€

The Under-King pointed to the exit behind them. โ€œThere.โ€

Ithan turned. And thereย was Connor, as vibrant as heโ€™d ever been in life, standing in the temple doorway.
