Chapter no 67

House of Flame and Shadow (Crescent City, #3)

Hunt found Baxian arranging fresh bundles of hay in the castle stables. They remained intact, located just far enough away from the castle to have been spared during its collapse. โ€œYou got the lightning to the wolf and the witch?โ€ Baxian asked by way of greeting.

โ€œTheyโ€™re on their way back to Lunathion with it. But the priority is to try to find a cure for the parasite.โ€

โ€œGood,โ€ Baxianย grunted. โ€œI hope they have more success than Iโ€™ve had with finding us housing for tonight.โ€

โ€œThat bad, huh?โ€ Hunt said, leaning against the doorway.

โ€œNo one wants to loan us a room or even a bed, so short of kicking people out of their homes โ€ฆโ€ The Helhound gestured grandly to the stables. โ€œWelcome to Hotel Horseshit.โ€

Hunt chuckled, surveying the woodwork. โ€œHonestly, Iโ€™ve slept in way worse.ย These horses have a nicer home than the one I grew up in.โ€

Sad, but true.

โ€œSame,โ€ Baxian said, and it surprised Hunt enough that he lifted a brow. Baxian said, โ€œI, ah โ€ฆ grew up in one of the poorer parts of Ravilis. Being half-shifterโ€”halfโ€“Helhoundย shifterโ€”and half-angel โ€ฆ it didnโ€™t make my parents popular with either theย House of Earth and Blood or the House of Sky and Breath. Made it hardย for them to keep their jobs.โ€

โ€œWhich one of your parents was the angel?โ€

โ€œMy dad,โ€ Baxian said. โ€œHe served as a captain in Sandrielโ€™s 45th. He had it easier than my mom, who was shunned by everyone she ever knew for โ€˜sullyingโ€™ herself with an angel. But they both paid the price for being together.โ€

From the way his tone darkened, Hunt knew it had to have been bad. โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ he said.

โ€œIย was eight. I still donโ€™t know how the mob started, but โ€ฆโ€ Baxianโ€™s throat worked, yet he finished one pallet of hay and moved on to start another. โ€œIt ended with my mom torn to shreds by her fellow Helhounds, and my father seized by the very angels he commanded and given the Living Death.โ€

Hunt blew out a breath. โ€œFuck.โ€

โ€œThey were in such a frenzy, they, ah โ€ฆโ€ Baxian shook his head. โ€œThey keptย cutting off his wings every time they tried to heal. He lost so much blood in the end that he didnโ€™t make it.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ Hunt said again. โ€œI never knew.โ€

โ€œNo one did. Not even Sandriel.โ€ Baxian laid a blanket over the next pallet. โ€œFrom then on, I was on my own. Neither side of the family would take aย half-breed, as they made sure to call me, so I learned how to fend for myself in the slums.ย How to keep hidden, how to listen for valuable informationโ€”how to sell that information to interested parties. I became good enough at it that I made a name for myself. The Snake, they called me, because I fucked over so many people. And Sandriel eventually heard about me and recruited me for her triariiโ€”to be her spy-master and tracker. The Snake became the Helhound, but โ€ฆ I kept a few touches.โ€

The memory of Baxianโ€™s reptilian armor flashed through Huntโ€™s mind.

โ€œI hated it, hated Sandriel, hated Lidia, who I always thought could see through me, but โ€ฆ what else was I going to do with myself?โ€ Baxian finished with all the pallets and faced Hunt. โ€œServing in Sandrielโ€™s triarii was better than living in the slums,ย always looking over my shoulder for whoever wanted to knife me. But the shitย she had us do โ€ฆโ€ He tapped his neck, the scar Hunt had given him. โ€œI deserved this.โ€

โ€œWe all did fucked-up shit for Sandriel,โ€ Hunt said roughly.

โ€œYeah, but you didnโ€™t have a choice. I did.โ€

โ€œYou chose to turn away from it, to mitigate the damage when you could.โ€

โ€œThanks to Danika,โ€ Baxian said.

โ€œWhat better excuse than love?โ€ Hunt asked.

Baxian smiled sadly. โ€œI told her everything, youย know. Danika, I mean. And she understoodโ€”she didnโ€™t judge. She told me she had a half-human, half-Fae friend who had faced similar troubles. I think her love for Bryce allowed her to see past all my shit and still love me.โ€

Hunt smiled. โ€œYou should tell Bryce that.โ€

Baxian eyed him. โ€œYou guys โ€ฆ ah, you guys okay? Things seemed kind of rough for a while, down in the caves.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ Hunt said,ย letting out a long breath. โ€œYeah, we are. We talked.โ€

โ€œAnd the Hel stuff โ€ฆโ€ Bryce had filled everyone in about what the Princes of Hel had claimed about Huntโ€™s origins. โ€œYou doing okay with that?โ€

Hunt considered. โ€œIt seems secondary to everything else thatโ€™s going on, you know? Poor me, with my daddy issues. Daddies? I donโ€™t even know.โ€

Baxian huffed a laugh. โ€œDoes it matter? Your exact geneticย makeup?โ€

Hunt considered again. โ€œNo. Thatโ€™s just stuff in my blood, my magic. Itโ€™s not who I am.โ€ He shrugged. โ€œThatโ€™s what Bryce says, anyway. Iโ€™m working on believing it.โ€

Baxian nodded to the halo on Huntโ€™s brow. โ€œSo how come you havenโ€™t taken it off yet? They claimed youโ€™ve had the power all along.โ€

Hunt glanced toward the raftered ceiling. โ€œI will,โ€ he hedged.

Baxian gave Hunt a lookย that said he saw right through him. That right now, Hunt needed a breather. Just some time to processย everything. He wanted to be free of the halo, but to go full Prince of Hel or whatever โ€ฆ he wasnโ€™t ready for that. Not yet.

But Baxian said, โ€œBryce is right, though. Who you are isnโ€™t about whatโ€™s biologically in your system. Itโ€™s about who raised you. Who you are now.โ€

Huntโ€™s motherโ€™s faceย flashed before his eyes, and he fixed the memory of her close to his heart. โ€œHave you and Bryce been exchanging notes on how to give me a pep talk?โ€

Baxian laughed, then glanced around. โ€œWhere is she, anyway? Off making more gardens?โ€

Hunt laughed quietly. โ€œProbably. But I came here to find youโ€”weโ€™re having a council of war in a minute, but I wanted to ask you something first.โ€

Baxian crossedย his powerful arms, giving Hunt his full attention. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œSome shitโ€™s going down soon. I need someone to run things if Iโ€™m not around.โ€

โ€œAnd where would you be?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ll hear about everything from Bryce,โ€ Hunt said, holding his stare. โ€œBut I need a second in command right now.โ€

Baxian raised his brows. For a moment, Hunt was in a war tent again, giving orders to his soldiers before battle.ย He shook off the chill of the memory and folded his wings.

Baxian smirked, though. โ€œWho said youโ€™re in charge?โ€

Hunt rolled his eyes. โ€œMy wife, thatโ€™s who.โ€ But he pressed, โ€œSo โ€ฆ will you? I need someone who can fight. On the ground and in the air.โ€

โ€œOh, youโ€™re only asking because I have wings?โ€ Baxian ruffled his black feathers for emphasis.

โ€œIโ€™m asking,โ€ Hunt said, noting the spark of amusementย on the Helhoundโ€™s face, โ€œbecause I trust you, asshole. For some weird reason.โ€

โ€œAsteri dungeon bonding at its finest.โ€ The tone was light, though the shadows of all theyโ€™d been through darkened Baxianโ€™s eyes. โ€œBut Iโ€™m honored. Yeahโ€”you can trust me. Tell me what needs to get done and Iโ€™ll do it.โ€

โ€œThanks,โ€ Hunt said, and motioned to the exit. โ€œYou might regret that in a few minutes โ€ฆ but thanks.โ€

โ€œLet me get this straight,โ€ Ruhn said. They had all gathered around a campfire in the middle of an open plainโ€”about the only privacy they could find from spying ears. Just for the Hel of it, Flynn had grown a small grove of oak trees around them. His earth-based magic seemed to be exploding here now, as if the reborn land were calling to him to fill it, adorn it.

But Ruhn fixed his stare onย his sister as he said, โ€œWeโ€™re going toย Nena. To open theย Northern Rift.โ€

Bryce, seated on a large stone with Hunt beside her, said, โ€œIย am going to Nena. With Hunt. And my parentsโ€”I need Randallโ€™s particular brand of expertise. Baxian will stay here with Cooper until they get back.ย Youย are going to take those two buzzardsโ€โ€”she nodded to Flynn and Declan, who glared at herโ€”โ€œand go back to Lunathion.โ€

Ruhn blinked slowly. โ€œTo โ€ฆ die? Because thatโ€™s what will happen if weโ€™re caught.โ€

โ€œTo find Isaiah and Naomi. See if they can come join us. Their phones and emails are no doubt tappedโ€”we donโ€™t have any other way to contact them.โ€

โ€œYou want us to go convince two members of Celestinaโ€™s triarii to go rogue?โ€ Dec said.

Hunt said, โ€œThey wonโ€™t need much convincing, but yes. We need them.โ€

Ruhn shookย his head. โ€œIf youโ€™re thinking of rallying some sort of angelic host to take on the Asteri, forget it. No angel is going to follow any of usโ€”even Athalarโ€”into battle.โ€

Bryce held her ground. This was her plan, and thereโ€™d be no shaking her or Athalar from it, Ruhn knew. He opened his mouth to keep arguing anyway, but Dec cut him off.

โ€œWhat about him?โ€ Dec asked, pointing to Baxian. โ€œHeโ€™s gotย a better in with the angels.โ€

Bryce shook her head. โ€œBaxian will stay here to help coordinateย the arriving refugees, and lead in our stead.โ€ Bryce gestured to herself and Hunt.

โ€œWe could do that,โ€ Flynn said.

โ€œNo,โ€ Bryce said coolly. โ€œYou canโ€™t. The Fae are more scared of him, so heโ€™ll be the most effective.โ€

โ€œSays who?โ€ Flynn demanded. โ€œWeโ€™re plenty scary.โ€

โ€œSays the fact that he, at least,ย was able to get us the stables to sleep in,โ€ Hunt growled. Baxian waggled his eyebrows at the Fae lord. โ€œThe rest of you struck out completely.โ€

Flynn and Dec scowled. But Ruhnโ€™s breath caught as Bryce looked to Lidia. โ€œIโ€™m not going to presume to give you orders. I know you have an obligation to the Ocean Queen. Do what you must.โ€

โ€œI go with Ruhn,โ€ Lidia said quietly, and something in his chestย sparked at that.

Bryce just nodded, and he didnโ€™t miss the gratitude in his sisterโ€™s eyes.

โ€œAnd me?โ€ Tharion asked at last, brows high.

โ€œI need you to go back to the River Queen,โ€ Bryce said softly. โ€œAnd convince her to shelter as many people Beneath as possible.โ€

Tharion paled. โ€œLegs, Iโ€™d love to do that, but sheโ€™ll kill me.โ€

โ€œThen find some way to convince her not to,โ€ Athalar said, nothingย but pure general as he fixed his stare on the mer. โ€œUse those Captain Whatever skills and figure out something she wants more than killing you.โ€

Tharion glanced to Sathia, who was watching attentively. โ€œShe, uh โ€ฆ wonโ€™t be pleased by my new marital status.โ€

โ€œThen find something,โ€ Hunt said again, โ€œto please her.โ€

Tharionโ€™s jaw clenched, but Ruhn could see him thinking through his options.

โ€œThe Blue Court was the only faction in Crescent City that sheltered people during the attack this spring,โ€ Bryce said. โ€œYou guys went out of your way to help innocents get to safety. Appeal to that side of the River Queen. Tell her a storm is coming, and that after what went down in Asphodel Meadows, we need her to take in asย many people as the Blue Court can accommodate. If thereโ€™s anyone whoโ€™sย got the charm to sway her, itโ€™s you, Tharion.โ€

โ€œAh, Legs,โ€ Tharion said, rubbing his face. โ€œHow can I resist when you ask like that?โ€

Sathia, to Ruhnโ€™s surprise, laid a hand on the merโ€™s knee and promised Bryce, โ€œWeโ€™ll both go.โ€

โ€œThen sheโ€™ll definitely kill Tharion,โ€ Flynn said.

Sathia glared at her brother. โ€œI know a thing or two about dealing with arrogant rulers.โ€ Her chin lifted. โ€œIโ€™mย not afraid of the River Queen.โ€ Tharion looked like he might warn her against that, but kept his mouth shut.

โ€œGood,โ€ Bryce said to Sathia. โ€œAnd thank you.โ€

โ€œSo thatโ€™s it, then,โ€ Ruhn said. โ€œCome dawn, weโ€™re scattering to the winds?โ€

โ€œCome dawn,โ€ Bryce said, and her chest flared with starlight that lit up the entire countryside, โ€œweโ€™re retaliating.โ€

Ruhn was still mulling it overโ€”what Bryceย wanted to do. Opening the Northern Rift toย Hel. She had to be insane โ€ฆ yet he trusted her. And Athalar. They surely had some other sneaky-ass shit up their sleeves, but theyโ€™d reveal it when the time was right.

Ruhn tossed and turned on his crunchy, spiky pallet of hay, unable to sleep. Perhaps that was because Lidia lay across from him, staring up at the raftered ceiling.

Her eyes slid overย to his, and Ruhn said into her mind,ย Canโ€™t sleep?

Iโ€™m thinking about all the Ophion agents I encountered over the years. I never knew them in person, but the people who helped me organize the strike on the Spine, and worked with me for years before that โ€ฆ theyโ€™re all gone now.

It wasnโ€™t your fault.

Asphodel Meadows was aimed at your sister. But butchering Ophion, the people in the camps โ€ฆ thatย was to punish me. Ophion aided me in your escape, and Rigelus wanted revenge.

Ruhnโ€™s heart ached.ย Weโ€™ll make the Asteri pay for it.

She turned on her side, looking at him full in the face. Gods, she was beautiful.

How are you feeling? Her question was gentle.ย After โ€ฆ what happened with your father.

I donโ€™t know,ย Ruhn said.ย It felt right in the moment, felt good, even. But now โ€ฆย He shook hisย head.ย I keep thinking about my mother, of all people. And what sheโ€™ll say. She might be the only person whoโ€™ll mourn him.

She loved him?

She was attached to him, even if he treated her as little more than a broodmare. But he kept her in comfort all these years, as a reward for birthing him a son. She was always grateful for that.

Lidia reached a hand across the narrow space between them andย found his ownโ€”his fingers still strangely pale and uncalloused. But her skin was so soft and warm, the bones beneath so strong.ย Youโ€™ll find a way to live with what you did to your father. I did.

Ruhn lifted a brow.ย You โ€ฆ?

I killed him, yes.ย The words were frank, yet weary.

Why?

Because he was a monsterโ€”to me, and to so many others. I made it look like a rebel attack. Told Ophion to get theirย mech-suits and be waiting for him when his car drove through a mountain pass on its way to a meeting with me. They left a flattened vehicle and a corpse in their wake. Then burned the whole thing.

Ruhn blinked.ย Beheading my father seems like it was much โ€ฆ faster.

It certainly was. Her eyes held nothing but cold anger.ย I told the Ophion agents in the mech-suits to take their time squashing himย in his car. They did.

Cthona, Lidia.

But I, too, wondered, about my mother after that,ย she said quietly.ย About Hecuba. Wondered what the Queen of the Valbaran Witches made of her ex-loverโ€™s death. If she thought of me. If she had any interest, any at all, in reaching out to me after he died. But I never heard from her. Not once.

Iโ€™m sorry,ย he offered, and squeezed her hand. After a beat heย asked,ย So youโ€™re really not going back to the Ocean Queen?

No. Not as her spy. I meant every word earlier. I serve no one.

Is it weird to say Iโ€™m proud of you?ย Because I am.

She huffed a laugh and interlaced their fingers, her thumb stroking over the back of his hand.ย I see you, Ruhn,ย she said gently.ย All of you.

The words were a gift. His chest tightened. He couldnโ€™t stop himself from leaningย across the space and quietly, so no one around them might hear, pressing his mouth to hers.

The kiss was gentle, near silent. He pulled away after a heartbeat, but her free hand slid to his cheek. Her eyes glowed golden, even in the moonlit dimness of the stables.ย When weโ€™re not sleeping in a stable surrounded by people,ย she said, mind-voice lowโ€”a purr that curled around his cock and grippedย tightโ€”I want to touch you.

His cock hardened at that, aching. He shut his eyes, fighting it, but her lips brushed his, silently teasing.

I want to ride you,ย she whispered into his mind, and slipped her hand from his to palm him through his pants. Ruhn bit down on his lower lip to keep from groaning. Her fingers slid down the length of him.ย I want this inside of me. She dug the heel of her palmย along him, and he stifled a moan.ย I wantย youย inside of me.

Fuck yeahย was all he could manage to say, to think.

Her laughter echoed in his mind, and her lips slid from his to find the spot beneath his ear. Her teeth grazed over his too-hot skin, and he writhed against the hand she still had on him, the crackling hay so gods-damned loudโ€”

โ€œPlease donโ€™t fuck right next to us,โ€ Flynn muttered fromย a few feet away.

โ€œUgh,โ€ Bryce called from across the stables. โ€œReally?โ€

Ruhn squeezed his eyes shut, fighting his arousal.

But Lidia laughed quietly. โ€œSorry.โ€

โ€œPervs,โ€ Declan muttered, hay crinkling as he turned over.

Ruhn looked back to Lidia and saw her smiling, delight and mischief brightening her face.

And damn if it wasnโ€™t the most beautiful thing heโ€™d ever seen.
