Back in his humanoid form, Ithan sat across from Bryce and Hunt in the grass, unable to get words out. Hypaxia, seated beside him, gave him space to think.
Beyond Bryce sat Ruhn, Flynn, Dec, and Tharionโand Lidia and Baxian. Along with a female who was apparently Tharionโs wife and Flynnโs sister.
Some crazy shit had happened. Ithan knew that. But they didnโt offer any explanations, insteadย waiting for him to get into why heโd come here. What had happened.
His throat became unbearably tight.
โI โฆโ They were all staring at him. Waiting. โI need Sofie Renastโs body.โ
โWell,โ Hunt said, whistling, โthat wasnโt what I expected to hear.โ
Ithan lifted pleading eyes to the Umbra Mortis. โJesiba said King Morven has the bodyโโ
โHad the body,โ Ruhn amended, crossing his arms. His tattoosย looked like theyโd been put through a paper shredder. Ithan had noticed that immediately upon seeing his friends, upon hugging them all so tightly theyโd complained about his grip. Ruhn went on, โThe body is now technically Bryceโs.โ
Ithan shook his head, not understanding.
Hunt drawled, โMorven is dead, and Bryce is Queen of Avallen.โ
Ithan just blinked at Bryce, who was watching him. Carefully.ย Like she knew something hadโ
โThe Meadows,โ he blurted. Had they heard about it here? Had theyโ
โWe know,โ Flynn said.
โFucking bastards,โ Tharion murmured.
Bryce only asked Ithan, โHow bad?โ
Ithan couldnโt talk about the small bodies, so many of themโ
โAs one might expect,โ Hypaxia answered grimly, โand then some.โ Heavy silence fell.
โWhatever took you away from helping the city,โ Lidiaย said, eyes on her sister, โmust be important indeed. Why do you need Sofieโs body?โ
Again, they all looked at him. And he couldnโt contain his misery as he said, โBecause I fucked up.โ
It all came out. How heโd found an alternate heir to the Fendyr line, freed her from the Astronomer โฆ and then killed her.
None of it was news to Tharion, Flynn, or Dec. But judging from the way Bryce and Ruhnย were glowering at the trio โฆ Apparently, they had forgotten to mention this information in the chaos of the last few days.
How theyโd forgotten to mention the thing that had literally shredded apart Ithanโs life was beyond him, but he didnโt dwell on it. He plowed on to the part of his story that was news for all of them: How he and Hypaxia had attempted to raise Sigrid. And now the Fendyr heirย was a Reaper.
When he reached the end of his account, they were all staring at him wide-eyed. No one more so than Bryce, who hadnโt said anything when heโd spoken of an alternative to Sabine, someone Danika might have liked.
Ithan finished, โSo if Sofieโs body is intactโโ
โItโs not,โ Bryce said quietly.
Something crumpled in Ithanโs chest as he met her whiskey-colored eyes.
โMorvenโs castleย collapsed,โ Bryce said sadly. โSofieโs body is underneath tons of rubble, even if itย isย intact.โ
Ithan put his face in his hands and breathed hard.
Flynn put a consoling arm around his shoulders, squeezing. โMaybe thereโs another wayโโ
โWe needed a thunderbird,โ Ithan said through his hands. There was no fixing this. No undoing it. Heโd brought this upon an innocent wolf, upon his peopleโ
โLook,โ Bryce said, and the gentleness in her tone almost killed him. She blew out a long breath. โAn alternate Fendyr heir would have been amazing. But โฆโ
Ithan lowered his hands from his face. โButย what?โ
Huntโs eyes flashed at Ithanโs snarl. But Bryce didnโt back down as she said, โWe have bigger problems right now. And time isnโt our ally.โ
โI killed her,โ Ithan said, voice cracking. โIย fuckingย killedย herโโ
But Athalar said to Hypaxia, โRigelus collected some of my lightningโfor a similar purpose, I think.โ Bryce started, as if this was news to her. โAre you sure it wouldnโt help with Sigrid?โ
โIt might be worth a try,โ Hypaxia admitted, โbut I donโt have any of the supplies Iโd need to contain your sort of power.โ
Ruhnโs head lifted. โLike a bunch of crystals?โ
They allย turned to the prince, but he was looking at Lidia. The Hind explained, โWe found a cache of them in the archives.โ
Ruhn added, โRigelus used one to grab Athalarโs power in the dungeons. Would it work for you, too?โ
Hypaxia nodded slowly and said to Hunt, โI wouldnโt require much.โ
Bryce glanced around at the others. Ruhn took her meaning and motioned to his friends. โCome on. Letโs grab thoseย crystals from the archives. Hopefully itโs still standing.โ
Flynn, Dec, Lidia, Baxian, and Tharionโhis wife in towโheaded down the hill with Ruhn. Only Tharion glanced back, justย once, his eyes full of pity. Like the mer understood what it was to have fucked up so royally. To regret.
But Bryce grabbed Ithanโs hand, bringing his attention back to her. โWhatโs done is done, Ithan.โ
โJesiba saidย the same thing,โ he said glumly.
โAnd sheโs right,โ Bryce said. At her side, Athalar nodded. But Bryce motioned with a hand to Hypaxia. โThe whole fucking worldโs changing so rapidlyโweโre all changing, faster than we can process. For Cthonaโs sake, Hypaxia isnโt even queen anymore. Have either of you really reflected on that?โ A punch of guilt went through Ithan. Heโd been so focused on himselfย that he hadnโt thought to check in with the witch. But Hypaxiaโs face remained grave, determined. And Bryce went on to Ithan, โSo look: you killed Sigrid, and sheโs a Reaper, and I think itโs โฆ really admirable that youโre trying to raise herโโ
โDonโt patronize me,โ he snarled, and again Athalar threw him that warning glare.
โIโm not,โ Bryce said. She was the Queen of Avallen, and Ithan couldย see it in her eyes: the leader glimmering there. โPart of why I love you is because youโll stop at nothing to do the right thing.โ
โTrying to do the right thing led me to the debacle with Sigrid,โ he said, shaking his head in disgust.
โMaybe,โ Bryce said, and glanced at Hypaxia. โBut the two of you โฆ I need your help. I have to believe that Urd sent you here for this.โ
โFor what?โ Hypaxia said,ย head angling.
Bryce and Hunt swapped glances. The angel motioned to his mate, as if to say,ย Your story to tell.
โI, uh,โ Bryce said, pulling at some blades of grass, โhave a lot to update you guys about.โ
โYou werenโt kidding about the big update,โ Ithan said when Bryce had finished.
โWhere do we factor into this, though?โ Hypaxia asked. โIfย youโre thinking to raise an army to aid Hel, Iย have no sway with the witches, and Ithan wouldnโt be able to muster the wolvesโโ
โNo armies from Midgard,โ Bryce said. โWe donโt have the time for that, anyway.โ
Hypaxia pulled on a tightly coiled curl. โWhat, then?โ
Bryceโs eyes seemed to glow. โI need you to make an antidote for the Asteriโs parasite.โ
Hypaxia blinked slowly. That bit of Bryceโs story had been the hardest to swallow. Thatย they were all infected by something in the water, their magic cut off at the knees.
Bryce pushed on, โYou figured out an antidote for the synth, Hypaxia. I need you to do it again. Help us level up before we take on the Asteri. Get us free of their restraints.โ
โYou place an awful lot of faith in my abilities. Iโll need to study the parasite before I can even start mapping out the propertiesย of an antidoteโโ
โWe donโt have time for the full-blown scientific method,โ Bryce said.
โIโd hesitate to give you anything that hadnโt been fully tested,โ Hypaxia countered.
โWe donโt have that luxury,โ Athalar said firmly. โAnything you can rig up, even if itโs temporary, even if it just holds the parasite at bay for a bit โฆโ
โI donโt know if thatโs possible,โ Hypaxia said, but Ithan couldย see the ideas gleaming in her eyes. โAnd Iโd need a lab. Considering the state of Avallen after your โฆ claiming of it, I donโt think thereโs anything here I could use.โ
โAnd no power, anyway,โ Bryce said. โSo youโll have to head back to the Lunathion House of Flame and Shadowโit seems like you guys will be hidden and protected there. Especially if Jesibaโs around.โ
Ithan hadnโt told Bryce aboutย whoโwhatโJesiba really was. That was Jesibaโs secret to tell.
Her words settled. Ithan said, โWhat do you meanย you guys? I donโt know shit about science. I canโt help Hypaxia with this.โ
โYou know how to fight,โ Athalar said. โAnd defend. Hypaxia will need someone to guard her while she works.โ
Ithan turned to Bryce, who was watching him with a grim expression. โBut Sigridโโ
โWe need thatย antidote, Ithan,โ Bryce said gently, but firmly. โMore than anything. Hunt will give you the lightning for Sigrid, but we need that antidote first.โ She added to Hypaxia, โAs fast as you can make it.โ
Hypaxia and Bryce stared at each other for a long moment. โVery well,โ Hypaxia said, inclining her head.
Ithan closed his eyes. To abandon his quest, to leave Sigrid as a Reaper โฆ
But his friendsย needed him. They were asking for his help. To deny them, even if it was to save Sigrid โฆ Heโd already screwed up Sigridโs life. He wouldnโt do the same to his friends.
So Ithan opened his eyes and said, โWhen do we head back to Crescent City?โ
Bryceโs face remained grim as she said, โRight now.โ
โNow?โ Hypaxia said, the first bit of shock sheโd shown.
โThat boatโs still waiting for you,โ Athalarย said, pointing to the ocean in the distance. โWeโll go get the crystals from the others, and Iโll fire up the stones. Once I bring them back here, get on that boat and sail for Lunathion.โ
โAnd ifโwhenโI come up with an antidote to the parasite?โ Hypaxia asked Bryce and Hunt. โHow do I contact you?โ
โCall us,โ Bryce said. โIf you canโt reach us, get the antidote to the Eternal City. Thereโsย a fleet of mech-suits on Mount Hermonโhide near there, and weโll find you.โ
โWhen, though?โ
Bryceโs face hardened. โYouโll know when itโs too late to help us.โ
Ithan started, โBryceโโ
But Bryce nodded toward the glimmering sea. โAs fast as you can,โ she repeated to the former witch-queen. โIโm begging you.โ
With that, she walked to Athalar, and he leapt into the skies, flying them in theย direction the others had headed.
There was no chance to talk to Tharion or Flynn or Dec. Noย chance to even say goodbye. From the way Hypaxia was watching the angel and Bryce vanish toward the distant ruins, he suspected she was thinking the same thing about Lidia.
Twenty minutes later, Bryce and Athalar were back, half a dozen quartz crystals sizzling in the angelโs hands. Bottled lightning.
Hypaxia pocketed them, promising to use them well. Bryce kissed her cheek, then Ithanโs.
Once, he would have done anything for that kiss. But now it left him hollow, reeling.
Athalar only clapped Ithan on the shoulder before launching skyward with Bryce again, soon no more than a speck against the blue.
When they were alone, Hypaxia motioned to the path theyโd taken up from the beach. โWe mustย rise to meet this challenge, Ithan,โ she said, her voice sure. She patted the lightning-filled crystals now glowing through the pockets of her dark blue robes.
With that, she started off for the boat and the task before them.
Ithan lingered for a moment longer. Heโd failed in this quest, too. Heโd had a second shot at fixing Sigrid, and heโd failed. It was important to help their friendsโandย all of Midgardโbut the decision weighed on him.
Heโd always thought of himself as a good guy, but maybe he wasnโt. Maybe heโd been deluding himself.
He didnโt know where that left him.
Ithan followed Hypaxia, turning his back on Avallen and the sliver of hope it had offered. To have the lightning in hand, but to have to postpone any effort to help Sigrid โฆ
He had no choice but to keep puttingย one foot in front of the other.
Maybe at some point, heโd stop leaving a trail of absolute destruction in his wake.
