Chapter no 64

House of Flame and Shadow (Crescent City, #3)

The land had awoken, and the Fae of Avallen were terrified.

Hunt tried not to be smug at the sight of the destroyed castle. The occupants and the town had been spared, but vines and trees had burst through Morvenโ€™s castle and turned it into rubble.

โ€œA lastย fuck youย from the land,โ€ Bryce murmured to Hunt as the two of them arrived at a hill overlooking the ruins. At their far end, a groupย of Fae stood in apprehensive silence around the demolished building.

Beside him, Bryce thrummed with powerโ€”from Helena and her cursed bloodline, but also from whatever lingering soul-wound had healed the moment Ruhn had cut off their fatherโ€™s head.

Hunt slid an arm around his mateโ€™s waist, taking in the Fae who were gawking at the ruins, the island of Avallenโ€”and the new islands surroundingย it.

Bryce peered up at him. โ€œAre you โ€ฆ okay?โ€

He was silent for a long moment, looking out at the landscape. โ€œNo.โ€

She pressed closer into his side.

His throat worked for a moment. โ€œIโ€™m some weird demonic test-tube baby.โ€

โ€œMaybe thatโ€™s where you came from, Hunt,โ€ she said, offering him a gentle smile, โ€œbut itโ€™s not who you areโ€”who you became.โ€

He glanced at her. โ€œEarlier, you seemed to notย like the person I became.โ€

She sighed. โ€œHunt, I get itโ€”all the shit youโ€™re feeling. I really do. But I canโ€™t do this without you.ย Allย of you.โ€

His heart ached as he looked at her fully. โ€œI know. Iโ€™m trying. Itโ€™s just โ€ฆโ€ He struggled for the words. โ€œMy worst nightmare would be to see you in the Asteriโ€™s hands. To see you dead.โ€

โ€œAnd avoiding that fate is worth letting them rule forever?โ€ Thereย was no sharpness to her questionโ€”just curiosity.

โ€œPart of me says yes. A very, very loud part of me,โ€ he admitted. โ€œBut another part of me says that we need to do whatever it takes to end this. So future generations, future mates โ€ฆ they donโ€™t have to make the same choices, suffer the same fates, as we have.โ€

Heย wouldย try to put his fear behind him. For her, for Midgard.

โ€œI know,โ€ she said gently.ย โ€œIf you need to talk, if you need someone to listen โ€ฆ Iโ€™m here.โ€

He scanned her face, pure love aching in his heart. Some of that lingering darkness and pain remained, yes, but heโ€™d fight through it. And he knew sheโ€™d give him the space he needed to do so. โ€œThanks, Quinlan.โ€

She rose up on her toes to kiss his cheek. A sweet, soft brush of her lips that warmed the final numbed shards of hisย soul.

Then she surveyed the ruins once more, taking his hand as they began walking down toward their friends gathered at the foot of the hill. โ€œI got the last piece of Theiaโ€™s power, but what now? How do we take on the Asteri? How do we get close enough to them to use the knife and sword and toss them through that portal?โ€

He kissed her temple. โ€œGive it a rest for today. For now, enjoy beingย leveled up.โ€

She snorted. โ€œThat doesnโ€™t sound like a strategy from the Umbra Mortis.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t tell if thatโ€™s an insult or not.โ€ He nudged her with a wing. โ€œWeโ€™ve got some other urgent stuff to sort out first, Bryce.โ€

โ€œYeah, I know,โ€ she said as they came to a stop among their friends. She addressed all of them. โ€œSince this place can hold out against the Asteri, we need to get as many peopleย here as possible. Without tipping off imperial forces.โ€

โ€œTheย Depth Chargerย could help,โ€ Flynn suggested. Tharion grimaced but didnโ€™t object.

Lidia asked, โ€œBut how would they pierce the mists?โ€

Bryce lifted a hand, and in the distance, the mists partedโ€”then sealed. โ€œDidnโ€™t you hear? Iโ€™m a fancy world-walker who can do this shit innately. Plus โ€ฆโ€ She gave a crooked grin. โ€œIโ€™m now Queen of Avallen.ย Wielding the mists is a perk of the job.โ€

โ€œOf course,โ€ Hunt said, rolling his eyes and earning a jab to the ribs.

But Ruhn warned, โ€œThe Fae wonโ€™t be happy to share.โ€

Bryce motioned to the ruins, the damage sheโ€™d unleashed, however unknowingly. โ€œThey donโ€™t have any choice.โ€

Ruhn snorted. โ€œLong live the queen, indeed.โ€

Declan gave a shout from up on the hill, and they all turned toward him.

โ€œWhatever you did with those mists, Bryce,โ€ Declan shouted, โ€œI got service!โ€ He lifted his phone in triumph, and then lowered his head to read whatever messages he had.

โ€œSmall victories,โ€ Bryce said. Lidia and Tharion laughed.

The Hindโ€™s amusement faded, though, as she turned to Tharion, as if drawn by the merโ€™s own chuckle. โ€œYou could hide here, you know. The Ocean Queen canโ€™t pass through theseย mists unless Bryce allows it.โ€

โ€œHide,โ€ Tharion said, as if the word tasted foul.

โ€œThe alternative is begging her not to kill you,โ€ Lidia said, โ€œand then doing everything she says for the rest of your life.โ€

โ€œNo different from the River Queen,โ€ Tharion said. Sathia was watching him carefullyโ€”curiously. The mer shrugged, and asked Lidia baldly, โ€œHow do you live with it? Being at her mercy?โ€

Lidiaโ€™s mouth tightened, and they all pretended they werenโ€™tย listening to her every word as she said at last, โ€œI had no other choice.โ€ She looked to Ruhn, eyes bright. โ€œBut Iโ€™m not going to anymore.โ€

Ruhn started, whirling to her. โ€œWhat?โ€

Lidia said to him, to all of them, โ€œIf we survive the Asteri, Iโ€™m not going back.โ€

Hunt had seen enough of the Ocean Queen to know how well that would go down.

Bryce said cautiously, โ€œBut your sons โ€ฆโ€

โ€œIf we survive, my enemies will be dead,โ€ Lidia said, chin lifting with queenly grace. โ€œAnd surely she will have no need of my services anymore.โ€ She nodded to Tharion. โ€œIโ€™m not going back, and neither should you. The age of unchecked rulers is over.โ€ She motioned to the ruins. โ€œThis is the first step.โ€

A chill went down Huntโ€™s spine at the surety ofย her words. Bryce opened her mouth like she might say something.

But Baxian pivoted toward Declan, as if heโ€™d sensed something off. A second later, Declanโ€™s head snapped up.

A foreboding quiet settled over Hunt. Over all of them.

No one spoke as Declan approached. As the maleโ€™s throat bobbed. And when he looked at Ruhn, at Bryce, tears shone in his eyes.

โ€œThe Asteri made their move.โ€

Bryceย grabbed Huntโ€™s arm, as if it would keep her from falling.

โ€œTell me,โ€ Lidia said, pushing through them to get to Declan.

Declan glanced at the Hind, then back to Bryce. โ€œThe Asteri organized a hit, led by Pollux and Mordoc, on every Ophion base. They wiped them off the map.โ€

โ€œFuck,โ€ Hunt breathed.

But Declan was shaking his head. โ€œThey wiped out everyone in their camps, too.โ€

Huntโ€™s kneesย shook.

And when Declan looked to Bryce, Hunt knew immediately that it would be bad. Wished he could undo it, whatever it wasโ€”

โ€œAnd they dispatched their Asterian Guard to Asphodel Meadows. They โ€ฆ they said it was a hotbed of rebel activity.โ€

Bryce began shaking her head, backing away.

Declanโ€™s voice broke as he said, โ€œThey unleashed ten brimstone missiles on the Meadows. On everyone livingย there.โ€
