Chapter no 14

Kingdom of the Wicked (Kingdom of the Wicked, 1)

โ€œPut this on. No one should be subjected toย thatย all night, demon.โ€

Wrath snatched the shirt a second before it hit his face and actually cringed. Honestly, I couldnโ€™t blame him. Wrinkled tawny suede, elbows worn thin, and crisscrossing drawstrings at the chest. He stared like Iโ€™d dragged in a decaying carcass and told him to skin it and sew it into a jacket.

He set his jaw. โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œNo?โ€ I tilted my head like I hadnโ€™t heard him correctly.

โ€œIt looks like you balled it up and left it in the bottom of a drawer for months, and it smells like you wiped out pig innards with it.โ€ He tossed it back at me. โ€œFetch me something more suitable, or deal with me as is.โ€

โ€œExcuse me?โ€ I marched up to the line of bones and crossed them without hesitation. I stood toe-to-toe with him, fuming. A wild gleam in my eyes dared him to tell me no again. โ€œPut. The. Shirt. On.ย Now.โ€

โ€œDoes the sight of my bare skin get under yours? Did you have sinful thoughts about me last night?โ€ He gave me a lazy grin. โ€œThatโ€™s usually my brotherโ€™s specialty, but fear not, weโ€™ve all got bedroom talents.โ€

โ€œPig.โ€

โ€œCare to roll around the dirt with me?โ€

Anger poured off me. โ€œYou wish.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t.โ€ I swore the temperature dropped to match the iciness of his tone. โ€œYou callย usย wicked, but you witches are vengeful creatures without soul or conscience.โ€ He nodded to his dagger Iโ€™d strapped to my hip. It looked ridiculously out of place against my dark flowing skirt and matching blouse with fluttering sleeves. But I didnโ€™t care. He wasnโ€™t getting it back. โ€œStab me if you must, but Iโ€™m not putting that monstrosity on.โ€

โ€œYou canโ€™t possibly be serious. Itโ€™s a shirt.โ€ I stared up at him and I couldnโ€™t begin to understand the new look in his eyes. โ€œNeed I remind you that you arenโ€™t in any position to make demands or deny me?โ€

His annoyance joined mine in unholy matrimony.

โ€œHereโ€™s a little lesson since you seem to be woefully uneducated, witch. Summoning does not equalย owning. Containment isnโ€™t forever.โ€

He moved near enough that I either had to remain and feel the heat of his body, or shift away to hold his gaze. It took a moment for me to yield a step, but I finally did.

I couldnโ€™t believe he wanted to argue over clothing while I was reeling over my personal ghost from Hell.ย Ifย it was even real and not some sinister creation my mind conjured to haunt me.

โ€œI can and will deny you whenever I choose,โ€ he said, his voice now dangerously low. โ€œDo notย everย make the mistake of thinking you wield any power over me other than the spell that contains me here. And even that wonโ€™t last.โ€

He took a deep breath, like he was enjoying the anger emanating from me. I thought about punching him again, but refrained. โ€œYou canโ€™t break the spell without me, demon.โ€

โ€œMaybe not. But containment spellsโ€”like summoning spellsโ€”last three days. After that, Iโ€™m free to leave this circle and do as I please.โ€ He finally stepped back and leaned against the cavern wall, watching me digest the information. โ€œHave you come to verbally spar all night, or have you changed your mind about the blood bond?โ€

โ€œNeither. Iโ€™ve come to interrogate you about witch hunters.โ€ His sudden laughter startled me. I recovered quickly and crossed my arms. โ€œWhy is that funny?โ€

โ€œInformation is currency where Iโ€™m from. No one expects to get something for free. If you walked into any of the royal houses and demanded information, theyโ€™d skin you alive.โ€

I hoped he couldnโ€™t hear the pounding of my heart as I let that visual take shape.

โ€œAgreeing to a blood trade doesnโ€™t count as payment?โ€ I asked. He straightened up and immediately lost the grin. That got his princely attention. โ€œI believe in making informed decisions. Therefore, I request an exchange of some basic information. Surely that wonโ€™t be too much for you to agree to.โ€

He inspected me the way someone might look at a cat if it suddenly started ordering the servants around. โ€œVery well. I will indulge you by answeringย someย questions. Choose wisely.โ€

โ€œHave you heard of any humans who have banded together to hunt witches?โ€

He shook his head. โ€œNot at this time. Though history has shown them to be active, so Iโ€™m sure they exist.โ€

โ€œWhich of your brothers bargained with my sister?โ€

โ€œPride.โ€

I closed my mouth. In human religion the devil was often associated with that particular sin. Last night Wrath only told me my sister had made a deal with his brother; he hadnโ€™t mentioned the actual devil. Which meantย .ย .ย .

A memory sprang to the forefront of my mind. The night before Vittoria was murdered, Iโ€™d demanded to know what sheโ€™d been doing at the monastery.

โ€œI was summoning the devil. An ancient book whispered its secrets to me, and Iโ€™ve decided to take him as my husband. Iโ€™d invite you to the wedding, but Iโ€™m pretty sure the ceremony takes place in Hell.โ€

Blood and bones.ย Vittoria hadnโ€™t been teasing. Questions swarmed around my head like angry bees.

โ€œWas that all you wanted to know, witch?โ€ Wrath stepped into view, breaking into my thoughts. My sister had told me the truth, and Iโ€™d let her down. I didnโ€™t ask questions, or take her seriously. I should have known betterโ€”she always said outlandish things to humans, and delighted in them thinking she was lying. If I wasnโ€™t so annoyed with her for embarrassing me in front of Antonio, I would have paid closer attention. Iย shouldย have paid closer attention.

I took a steadying breath. Iโ€™d start noticing every detail now.

โ€œWhy did Pride want to marry her?โ€ I asked. Wrathโ€™s expression became impossible to read. My patience frayed. โ€œI know my sister agreed to marry him. She told me so herself.โ€

He didnโ€™t move, but I pictured his mind whirling as he probably formulated a thousand different scenarios, and tallied benefits against costs to information sharing. I honestly didnโ€™t think heโ€™d respond. He didnโ€™t look pleased when he finally did. โ€œPride needs to marry in order to break a curse that was placed on him.โ€

โ€œWhy are you helping?โ€

He flashed his teeth. โ€œI was bored. It seemed like fun.โ€

If he really couldnโ€™t lie to me, that had to at least be partially true. โ€œSo, whatย .ย .ย .ย your mission is to find someone whoโ€™s willing to marry Pride?โ€

โ€œYes. Heโ€™s in need of a witch bride, specifically. Part of my task involves ensuring his betrothed makes it to our realm safely, should she accept his bargain.โ€

โ€œWhy does he need to marry a witch?โ€

โ€œHe requires someone with magical abilities to break the curse.โ€

โ€œWhat if she refuses?โ€

โ€œThen sheโ€™s made aware of opposingย .ย .ย .ย forcesย .ย .ย .ย that wish her harm.โ€

It was a very polite way of saying if she declined the offer, sheโ€™d risk death.

โ€œThe other two victims were also witches. Which means they were offered the same bargain as Vittoria,โ€ I said mostly to myself, thinking over the new information aloud. Wrath nodded politely anyway. โ€œWere they killed before or after you spoke with them?โ€

โ€œAfter.โ€

โ€œYou allow them time to consider the deal?โ€

โ€œOf course. Theyโ€™re given a full day to think it over.โ€

I was surprised by this. If I needed someone to accept a bargain to break a curse, time would be the last thing Iโ€™d want to give them. Too much could go wrong.

โ€œHow do you choose the witch?โ€ Wrath gave me a look that said question time was drawing to an end. โ€œAt least answer this, demon. How many others from your world know who youโ€™re offering the bargain to?โ€

โ€œOnly Pride and I.โ€

I mulled that over. That actually made the list of suspects greater. Instead of worrying about a spy in Wrathโ€™s kingdom, it opened up the possibility of the victims telling people about the devilโ€™s bargain in this world, too. Then those people whoโ€™d been told could have said something, or were overheard by others. A full day was a long time for the gossips to get to work.

Exceptย .ย .ย .ย there was one major issue with that theory.ย Stregheย didnโ€™t spill their secrets. I thought about witch hunters again. Wrath didnโ€™t sound like he thought they were a threat, but I hadnโ€™t found any evidence to completely rule them out. It still made the most sense that they were responsible. Perhaps theyโ€™d somehow uncovered who the true witches across the island were, and the devilโ€™s bargain timing was a coincidence.

โ€œWill you tell me who the next witch is?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

I considered my options. I could send notes to the twelve other families in Palermo, but there was a chance they could be intercepted. Showing up at their homes or businesses was also risky in case we were being watched, so that wasnโ€™t an option. In these strange times, I had to be very cautious about each of my moves. My good intentions might end up costing someone their life. Hopefully the others were taking precautions after the recent murders.

Wrath stepped to the edge of the bone circle, looking like trouble. โ€œWell? Are you ready to become a member of House Wrath?โ€

โ€œNo. Until you decide to work with me as an equal, I decline your offer ofย protection.โ€

His smile was filled with venom. โ€œYou werenโ€™t ever planning on accepting the blood trade, were you?โ€ I ignored him and plucked my satchel up from the ground and headed for the cave entrance. Wrath called out, โ€œWhere are you going?โ€

โ€œTo the monastery.โ€

โ€œThese are dangerous times; you shouldnโ€™t go alone. Set me free and Iโ€™ll come with you.โ€

As if Iโ€™d let that happen. โ€œNext time.โ€

โ€œBenediximus.โ€ย Good luck. โ€œItโ€™s your funeral.โ€

His dark chuckle followed me all the way back to the city.
