Max, Anderson, a blond woman, and a tall black man are all standing in the center of the room, staring at a dead body, and they look up only when Ibrahim approaches.
Andersonโs eyes home in on me immediately.
I feel my heart jump. I donโt know how Max got here before we did, and I donโt know if Iโm about to be punished for obeying Supreme Commander Ibrahim.
My mind spirals.
โWhatโs she doing here?โ Anderson asks, his expression wild. โI told her to stay in the rโโ
โI overruled your orders,โ Ibrahim says sharply, โand told her to come with me.โ
โMy bedroom is one of the most secure locations on this wing,โ Anderson says, barely holding on to his anger. โYouโve put us all at risk by moving her.โ
โWe are currently under attack,โ Ibrahim says. โYou left her alone, completely unattendedโโ
โI left her with Max!โ
โMax, whoโs too terrified of his own creation to spend even a few minutes alone with the girl. You forget, thereโs a reason he was never granted a military position.โ
Anderson shoots Max a strange, confused look. Somehow, the confusion on Andersonโs face makes me feel better about my own. I have no idea
whatโs happening. No idea to whom I should answer. No idea what Ibrahim meant byย creation.
Max just shakes his head.
โThe children are here,โ Ibrahim says, changing the subject. โTheyโre here, in our midst, completely undetected. Theyโre going room by room searching for her, and already theyโve killed four of our key scientists in the process.โ He nods at the dead bodyโa graying, middle-aged man, blood pooling beneath him. โHow did this happen? Why havenโt they been spotted yet?โ
โNothing has registered on the cameras,โ Anderson says. โNot yet, anyway.โ
โSo youโre telling me that thisโand the three other dead bodies weโve found so farโwas the work of ghosts?โ
โThey mustโve found a way to trick the system,โ the woman says. โItโs the only possible answer.โ
โYes, Tatiana, I realize thatโbut the question isย how.โ Ibrahim pinches his nose between his thumb and index finger. And itโs clear heโs talking to Anderson when he says: โAll the preparations you claimed to have made in anticipation of a possible assaultโthey were all for nothing?โ
โWhat did you expect?โ Anderson is no longer trying to control his anger. โTheyโre our children. We bred them for this. Iโd be disappointed if they were stupid enough to fall into our traps right away.โ
Our children?
โEnough,โ Ibrahim cries. โEnough of this. We need to initiate the transfer now.โ
โI already told you why we canโt,โ Max says urgently. โNot yet. We need more time. Emmaline still needs to fall below ten percent viability in order for the procedure to operate smoothly, and right now, sheโs at twelve percent. Another few daysโmaybe a couple of weeksโand we should be able to move forward. But anything above ten percent viability means thereโs a chance sheโll still be strong enough to resisโโ
โI donโt care,โ Ibrahim says. โWeโve waited long enough. And weโve wasted enough time and money trying to keep both her alive and her sister in our custody. We canโt risk another failure.โ
โBut initiating the transfer at twelve percent viability has a thirty-eight percent chance of failure,โ Max says, speaking quickly. โWe could be risking a great dealโโ
โThen find more ways to reduce viability,โ Ibrahim snaps.
โWeโre already at the top end of what we can do right now,โ Max says. โSheโs still too strongโsheโs fighting our effortsโโ
โThatโs only more reason to get rid of her sooner,โ Ibrahim says, cutting him off again. โWeโre expending an egregious amount of resources just to keep the other kids isolated from her advancesโwhen God only knows what damage sheโs already done. Sheโs been meddling everywhere, causing needless disaster. We need a new host. A healthy one. And we need it now.โ โIbrahim, donโt be rash,โ Anderson says, trying to sound calm. โThis could be a huge mistake. Juliette is a perfect soldierโsheโs more than proven herselfโand right now she could be a huge help. Instead of locking
her away, we should be sending her out. Giving her a mission.โ โAbsolutely not.โ
โIbrahim, he makes a good point,โ the tall black man says. โThe kids wonโt be expecting her. Sheโd be the perfect lure.โ
โSee? Azi agrees with me.โ
โI donโt.โ Tatiana shakes her head. โItโs too dangerous,โ she says. โToo many things could go wrong.โ
โWhat could possibly go wrong?โ Anderson asks. โSheโs more powerful than any of them, and completely obedient to me. To us. To the movement. You all know as well as I do that sheโs proven her loyalty again and again. Sheโd be able to capture them in a matter of minutes. This could all be over in an hour, and weโd be able to move on with our lives.โ Anderson locks eyes with me. โYou wouldnโt mind rounding up a few rebels, would you, Juliette?โ
โI would be happy to, sir.โ โSee?โ Anderson gestures to me.
A sudden alarm blares, the sound so loud itโs painful. Iโm still rooted in place, so overwhelmed and confused by this sudden flood of dizzying information that I donโt even know what to do with myself. But the supreme commanders look suddenly terrified.
โAzi, where is Santiago?โ Tatiana cries. โYou were last with him, werenโt you? Someone check in with Santiagoโโ
โHeโs down,โ Azi says, tapping against his temple. โHeโs not responding.โ
โMax,โ Anderson says sharply, but Max is already rushing out the door, Azi and Tatiana on his heels.
โGo collect your son,โ Ibrahim barks at Anderson.
โWhy donโt you go collect your daughter?โ Anderson shoots back.
Ibrahimโs eyes narrow. โIโm taking the girl,โ he says quietly. โIโm finishing this job, and Iโll do it alone if I have to.โ
Anderson glances from me to Ibrahim. โYouโre making a mistake,โ he says. โSheโs finally become our asset. Donโt let your pride keep you from seeing the answer in front of us. Juliette should be the one tracking down the kids right now. The fact that they wonโt be anticipating her as an assailant makes them easier targets. Itโs the most obvious solution.โ
โYou are out of your mind,โ Ibrahim shouts, โif you think Iโm foolish enough to take such a risk. I will not just hand her over to her friends like some common idiot.โ
Friends?
I have friends?
โHey, princess,โ someone whispers in my ear.
