Chapter no 29 – โ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€ŒELLA JULIETTEโ€Œ

Imagine Me (Shatter Me Book 6)

Max, Anderson, a blond woman, and a tall black man are all standing in the center of the room, staring at a dead body, and they look up only when Ibrahim approaches.

Andersonโ€™s eyes home in on me immediately.

I feel my heart jump. I donโ€™t know how Max got here before we did, and I donโ€™t know if Iโ€™m about to be punished for obeying Supreme Commander Ibrahim.

My mind spirals.

โ€œWhatโ€™s she doing here?โ€ Anderson asks, his expression wild. โ€œI told her to stay in the rโ€”โ€

โ€œI overruled your orders,โ€ Ibrahim says sharply, โ€œand told her to come with me.โ€

โ€œMy bedroom is one of the most secure locations on this wing,โ€ Anderson says, barely holding on to his anger. โ€œYouโ€™ve put us all at risk by moving her.โ€

โ€œWe are currently under attack,โ€ Ibrahim says. โ€œYou left her alone, completely unattendedโ€”โ€

โ€œI left her with Max!โ€

โ€œMax, whoโ€™s too terrified of his own creation to spend even a few minutes alone with the girl. You forget, thereโ€™s a reason he was never granted a military position.โ€

Anderson shoots Max a strange, confused look. Somehow, the confusion on Andersonโ€™s face makes me feel better about my own. I have no idea

whatโ€™s happening. No idea to whom I should answer. No idea what Ibrahim meant byย creation.

Max just shakes his head.

โ€œThe children are here,โ€ Ibrahim says, changing the subject. โ€œTheyโ€™re here, in our midst, completely undetected. Theyโ€™re going room by room searching for her, and already theyโ€™ve killed four of our key scientists in the process.โ€ He nods at the dead bodyโ€”a graying, middle-aged man, blood pooling beneath him. โ€œHow did this happen? Why havenโ€™t they been spotted yet?โ€

โ€œNothing has registered on the cameras,โ€ Anderson says. โ€œNot yet, anyway.โ€

โ€œSo youโ€™re telling me that thisโ€”and the three other dead bodies weโ€™ve found so farโ€”was the work of ghosts?โ€

โ€œThey mustโ€™ve found a way to trick the system,โ€ the woman says. โ€œItโ€™s the only possible answer.โ€

โ€œYes, Tatiana, I realize thatโ€”but the question isย how.โ€ Ibrahim pinches his nose between his thumb and index finger. And itโ€™s clear heโ€™s talking to Anderson when he says: โ€œAll the preparations you claimed to have made in anticipation of a possible assaultโ€”they were all for nothing?โ€

โ€œWhat did you expect?โ€ Anderson is no longer trying to control his anger. โ€œTheyโ€™re our children. We bred them for this. Iโ€™d be disappointed if they were stupid enough to fall into our traps right away.โ€

Our children?

โ€œEnough,โ€ Ibrahim cries. โ€œEnough of this. We need to initiate the transfer now.โ€

โ€œI already told you why we canโ€™t,โ€ Max says urgently. โ€œNot yet. We need more time. Emmaline still needs to fall below ten percent viability in order for the procedure to operate smoothly, and right now, sheโ€™s at twelve percent. Another few daysโ€”maybe a couple of weeksโ€”and we should be able to move forward. But anything above ten percent viability means thereโ€™s a chance sheโ€™ll still be strong enough to resisโ€”โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t care,โ€ Ibrahim says. โ€œWeโ€™ve waited long enough. And weโ€™ve wasted enough time and money trying to keep both her alive and her sister in our custody. We canโ€™t risk another failure.โ€

โ€œBut initiating the transfer at twelve percent viability has a thirty-eight percent chance of failure,โ€ Max says, speaking quickly. โ€œWe could be risking a great dealโ€”โ€

โ€œThen find more ways to reduce viability,โ€ Ibrahim snaps.

โ€œWeโ€™re already at the top end of what we can do right now,โ€ Max says. โ€œSheโ€™s still too strongโ€”sheโ€™s fighting our effortsโ€”โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s only more reason to get rid of her sooner,โ€ Ibrahim says, cutting him off again. โ€œWeโ€™re expending an egregious amount of resources just to keep the other kids isolated from her advancesโ€”when God only knows what damage sheโ€™s already done. Sheโ€™s been meddling everywhere, causing needless disaster. We need a new host. A healthy one. And we need it now.โ€ โ€œIbrahim, donโ€™t be rash,โ€ Anderson says, trying to sound calm. โ€œThis could be a huge mistake. Juliette is a perfect soldierโ€”sheโ€™s more than proven herselfโ€”and right now she could be a huge help. Instead of locking

her away, we should be sending her out. Giving her a mission.โ€ โ€œAbsolutely not.โ€

โ€œIbrahim, he makes a good point,โ€ the tall black man says. โ€œThe kids wonโ€™t be expecting her. Sheโ€™d be the perfect lure.โ€

โ€œSee? Azi agrees with me.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t.โ€ Tatiana shakes her head. โ€œItโ€™s too dangerous,โ€ she says. โ€œToo many things could go wrong.โ€

โ€œWhat could possibly go wrong?โ€ Anderson asks. โ€œSheโ€™s more powerful than any of them, and completely obedient to me. To us. To the movement. You all know as well as I do that sheโ€™s proven her loyalty again and again. Sheโ€™d be able to capture them in a matter of minutes. This could all be over in an hour, and weโ€™d be able to move on with our lives.โ€ Anderson locks eyes with me. โ€œYou wouldnโ€™t mind rounding up a few rebels, would you, Juliette?โ€

โ€œI would be happy to, sir.โ€ โ€œSee?โ€ Anderson gestures to me.

A sudden alarm blares, the sound so loud itโ€™s painful. Iโ€™m still rooted in place, so overwhelmed and confused by this sudden flood of dizzying information that I donโ€™t even know what to do with myself. But the supreme commanders look suddenly terrified.

โ€œAzi, where is Santiago?โ€ Tatiana cries. โ€œYou were last with him, werenโ€™t you? Someone check in with Santiagoโ€”โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s down,โ€ Azi says, tapping against his temple. โ€œHeโ€™s not responding.โ€

โ€œMax,โ€ Anderson says sharply, but Max is already rushing out the door, Azi and Tatiana on his heels.

โ€œGo collect your son,โ€ Ibrahim barks at Anderson.

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you go collect your daughter?โ€ Anderson shoots back.

Ibrahimโ€™s eyes narrow. โ€œIโ€™m taking the girl,โ€ he says quietly. โ€œIโ€™m finishing this job, and Iโ€™ll do it alone if I have to.โ€

Anderson glances from me to Ibrahim. โ€œYouโ€™re making a mistake,โ€ he says. โ€œSheโ€™s finally become our asset. Donโ€™t let your pride keep you from seeing the answer in front of us. Juliette should be the one tracking down the kids right now. The fact that they wonโ€™t be anticipating her as an assailant makes them easier targets. Itโ€™s the most obvious solution.โ€

โ€œYou are out of your mind,โ€ Ibrahim shouts, โ€œif you think Iโ€™m foolish enough to take such a risk. I will not just hand her over to her friends like some common idiot.โ€

Friends?

I have friends?

โ€œHey, princess,โ€ someone whispers in my ear.
