Chapter no 20 – โ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€ŒKENJIโ€Œ

Imagine Me (Shatter Me Book 6)

We both stare at the bloody scene a moment longer before Warner suddenly straightens and heads out the door. I tuck my gun into the waistband of my pants and chase after him, remembering to close the door behind us. I donโ€™t want those scorpions getting loose.

โ€œHey,โ€ I say, catching up to him. โ€œWhere are you going?โ€ โ€œTo find Castle.โ€

โ€œCool. Okay. But do you think that maybe next time, instead of just, you know, leaving without a word, you could tell me what the hell is going on? I donโ€™t like chasing after you like this. Itโ€™s demeaning.โ€

โ€œThat sounds like a personal problem.โ€

โ€œYeah but I thought personal problems were your area of expertise,โ€ I say. โ€œYouโ€™ve got what, at least a few thousand personal problems, right? Or was it a few million?โ€

Warner shoots me a dark look. โ€œYouโ€™d do well to address your own mental turbulence before criticizing mine.โ€

โ€œUh, whatโ€™s that supposed to mean?โ€

โ€œIt means that a rabid dog could sniff out your desperate, broken state.

Youโ€™re in no position to judge me.โ€ โ€œExcuse me?โ€

โ€œYou lie to yourself, Kishimoto. You hide your true feelings behind a thin veneer, playing the clown, when all the while youโ€™re amassing emotional detritus you refuse to examine. At least I do not hide from myself. I know where my faults lie and I accept them. But you,โ€ he says. โ€œPerhaps you should seek help.โ€

My eyes widen to the point of pain, my head whipping back and forth between him and the path in front of me. โ€œYou have got to be kidding me

right now.ย Youโ€™reย tellingย meย to get help with my issues? What is happening?โ€ I look up at the sky. โ€œAm I dead? Is this hell?โ€

โ€œI want to know whatโ€™s happening with you and Castle.โ€ Iโ€™m so surprised I briefly stop in place.

โ€œWhat?โ€ I blink at him. Still confused. โ€œWhat are you talking about?

Thereโ€™s nothing wrong with me and Castle.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve been more profane in the last several weeks than in the entire time Iโ€™ve known you. Something is wrong.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m stressed,โ€ I say, feeling myself bristle. โ€œSometimes I swear when Iโ€™m stressed.โ€

He shakes his head. โ€œThis is different. Youโ€™re experiencing an unusual amount of stress, even for you.โ€

โ€œWow.โ€ My eyebrows fly up. โ€œI really hope you didnโ€™t bother using yourโ€โ€”I make air quotesโ€”โ€œsupernatural ability to sense emotionsโ€โ€”I drop the air quotesโ€”โ€œto figure that one out. Obviously Iโ€™m extra stressed out right now. The world is on fucking fire. The list of things stressing me out is so long I canโ€™t even keep track. Weโ€™re up to our necks in shit. J is gone. Adam defected. Nazeeraโ€™s been shot. Youโ€™ve had your head so far up your own ass I thought youโ€™d never emergeโ€”โ€

He tries to cut me off but I keep talking.

โ€œโ€”and literally five minutes ago,โ€ I say, โ€œsomeone from the Sanctuaryโ€” ha, hilarious, horrible nameโ€”just tried to kill you, and I killed her for it.ย Five minutes ago.ย So yeah, I think Iโ€™m experiencing an unusual amount of stress right now, genius.โ€

Warner dismisses my speech with a single shake of his head. โ€œYour use of profanity increases exponentially when youโ€™re irritated with Castle. Your language appears to be directly connected to your relationship with him. Why?โ€

I try not to roll my eyes. โ€œNot that this information is actually relevant, but Castle and I struck a deal a few years ago. He thought that myโ€โ€”I make more air quotesโ€” โ€œoverreliance on profanity was inhibiting my ability to express my emotions in a constructive manner.โ€

โ€œSo you promised him youโ€™d tone down your language.โ€ โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œI see. It seems youโ€™ve reneged on the terms of that arrangement.โ€

โ€œWhy do you care?โ€ I ask. โ€œWhy are we even talking about this? Why are we losing sight of the fact that we were just attacked by someone from

insideย of the Sanctuary? We need to find Sam and Nouria and find out who this girl was, because she was clearly from this camp, and they should know thโ€”โ€

โ€œYou can tell Sam and Nouria whatever you want,โ€ Warner says. โ€œBut I need to talk to Castle.โ€

Something in his tone frightens me. โ€œWhy?โ€ I demand. โ€œWhat is going on? Why are you so obsessed with Castle right now?โ€

Finally, Warner stops moving. โ€œBecause,โ€ he says. โ€œCastle had something to do with this.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I feel the blood drain from my body. โ€œNo way. Not possible.โ€ Warner says nothing.

โ€œCome on, man, donโ€™t be crazyโ€” Castleโ€™s not perfect, but he would neverโ€”โ€

โ€œHeyโ€” What the hell just happened?โ€ Winston, breathless and panicked, comes running up to us. โ€œI heard a gunshot coming from the direction of your tent, but when I went to check on you, I sawโ€” I sawโ€”โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œWhat happened?โ€ Winstonโ€™s voice is shrill. Terrified.

At that exact moment, more people come running. Winston starts offering people explanations I donโ€™t bother to edit, because my head is still full of steam. I have no idea what the hell Warner is getting at, but Iโ€™m also worried that I know him too well to deny his mind. My heart says Castle would never betray us, but my brain says that Warner is usually right when it comes to sussing out this kind of shit. So Iโ€™m freaking out.

I spot Nouria in the distance, her dark skin gleaming in the bright sun, and relief floods through me.

Finally.

Nouria will know more about the girl with the scorpions. She has to. And whatever she knows will almost certainly help absolve Castle of any affiliation with this mess. And as soon as we can resolve this freak accident, Warner and I can get the hell out of here and start searching for J.

Thatโ€™s it. Thatโ€™s the plan.

It makes me feel good to have a plan. But when weโ€™re close enough, Nouria narrows her eyes at both me and Warner, and the look on her face sends a brand-new wave of fear through my body.

โ€œFollow me,โ€ she says.

We do.

Warner looksย livid.

Castle looks freaked out.

Nouria and Sam look like theyโ€™re sick and tired of all of us.

I might be imagining things, but Iโ€™m pretty sure Sam just shot Nouria a lookโ€”the subtext of which was probablyย Why the hell did you have to let your dad come stay with us?โ€”that was so withering Nouria didnโ€™t even get upset, she just shook her head, resigned.

And the problem is, I donโ€™t even know whose side Iโ€™m on.

In the end, Warner was right about Castle, but he was also wrong. Castle wasnโ€™t plotting anything nefarious; he didnโ€™t send that girlโ€”her name was Ameliaโ€”after Warner. Castleโ€™s mistake was thinking that all rebel groups shared the same worldview.

At first it didnโ€™t occur to me, either, that the vibe might be different around here. Different from our group at Point, at least. At Point we were led by Castle, who was more of a nurturer than a warrior. In his days before The Reestablishment he was a social worker. He saw tons of kids coming in and out of the system, and with Omega Point he sought to build a home and refuge for the marginalized. We were all about love and community at Point. And even though we knew that we were gearing up for a fight against The Reestablishment, we didnโ€™t always resort to violence; Castle didnโ€™t like using his powers in authoritative ways. He was more like a father figure to most of us.

But hereโ€”

It didnโ€™t take long to realize that Nouria was different from her dad. Sheโ€™s nice enough, but sheโ€™s also all business. She doesnโ€™t like to spend much time on small talk, and she and Sam mostly keep to themselves. They donโ€™t always take their meals with everyone else. They donโ€™t always participate in group things. And when it comes right down to it, Sam and Nouria are ready and willing to set shit on fire. Hell, they seem to be looking forward to it.

Castle was never really that guy.

I think he was a little blindsided when we showed up here. He was suddenly out of a job when he realized that Nouria and Sam werenโ€™t going to take orders from him. And then, when he tried to get to know peopleโ€”

He was disappointed.

โ€œAmelia was a bit of a zealot,โ€ Sam says, sighing. โ€œSheโ€™d never exhibited dangerous, violent tendencies, of course, which is why we let her stayโ€”but we all felt that her views were a little intense. She was one of the rare members who felt like the lines between The Reestablishment and the rebel groups should be clear and finite. She never felt safe with the children of the supreme commanders in our midst, and I know that because she took me aside to tell me so. I had a long talk with her about the situation, but I see now that she wasnโ€™t convinced.โ€

โ€œObviously,โ€ I mutter.

Nouria shoots me a look. I clear my throat.

Sam goes on: โ€œWhen everyone but Warner was basically kidnappedโ€” and Nazeera was shotโ€”Amelia probably figured she could finish the job and get rid of Warner, too.โ€ She shakes her head. โ€œWhat a horrible situation.โ€

โ€œDid you have to shoot her?โ€ Nouria says to me. โ€œWas she really that dangerous?โ€

โ€œShe hadย threeย scorpions!โ€ I cry. โ€œShe pulled a gun on Warner!โ€

โ€œWhat else was he supposed to think?โ€ Castle says gently. Heโ€™s staring at the ground, his long dreads freed from their usual tie at the base of his neck. I wish I could see the expression on his face. โ€œIf I hadnโ€™t known Amelia personally, even I wouldโ€™ve thought she was working for someone.โ€

โ€œTell me, again,โ€ Warner says to Castle, โ€œexactly what you said to her about me.โ€

Castle looks up. Sighs.

โ€œShe and I got into a bit of a heated discussion,โ€ he says. โ€œAmelia was determined that members of The Reestablishment could never change, that they were evil and would remain evil. I told her I didnโ€™t believe that. I told her that I believed that all people were capable of change.โ€

I raise an eyebrow. โ€œWait, like, you mean you think even someone like Anderson is capable of change?โ€

Castle hesitates. And I know, just by looking at his eyes, what heโ€™s about to say. My heart jumps in my chest. In fear.

โ€œI think if Anderson were truly remorseful,โ€ Castle says, โ€œthat he, too, could make a change. Yes. I do believe that.โ€

Nouria rolls her eyes.

Sam drops her head in her hands.

โ€œWait. Wait.โ€ I hold up a finger. โ€œSo, like, in a hypothetical situationโ€” If Anderson came to Point asking for amnesty, claiming to be a changed man, youโ€™d . . . ?โ€

Castle just looks at me.

I throw myself back in my chair with a groan.

โ€œKenji,โ€ Castle says softly. โ€œYou know better than anyone else how we did things at Omega Point. I dedicated my life to giving secondโ€”and third

โ€”chances to those whoโ€™d been cast out by the world. Youโ€™d be stunned if you knew how many peopleโ€™s lives were derailed by a simple mistake that snowballed, escalating beyond their control because no one was ever there to offer a hand or even an hour of assistanceโ€”โ€

โ€œCastle. Sir.โ€ I hold up my hands. โ€œI love you. I really do. But Anderson isnโ€™t a regular person. Heโ€”โ€

โ€œOf course heโ€™s a regular person, son. Thatโ€™s exactly the point. Weโ€™re all just regular people, when you strip us down. Thereโ€™s nothing to be afraid of when you look at Anderson; heโ€™s just as human as you or me. Just as terrified. And Iโ€™m sure if he could go back and do his life over again, heโ€™d make very different decisions.โ€

Nouria shakes her head. โ€œYou donโ€™t know that, Dad.โ€ โ€œMaybe not,โ€ he says quietly. โ€œBut itโ€™s what I believe.โ€

โ€œIs that what you believe about me, too?โ€ Warner asks. โ€œIs that what you told her? That I was just a nice boy, a defenseless child whoโ€™d never lift a finger to hurt her? That if I could do it all over again Iโ€™d choose to live my life as a monk, dedicating my days to giving charity and spreading goodwill?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Castle says sharply. Itโ€™s clear heโ€™s starting to get irritated. โ€œI told her that your anger was a defense mechanism, and that you couldnโ€™t help that you were born to an abusive father. I told her that in your heart, youโ€™re a good person, and that you donโ€™tย wantย to hurt anyone. Not really.โ€

Warnerโ€™s eyes flash. โ€œI want to hurt people all the time,โ€ he says. โ€œSometimes I canโ€™t sleep at night because Iโ€™m thinking about all the people Iโ€™d like to murder.โ€

โ€œGreat.โ€ I nod, leaning back in my chair. โ€œThis is super great. All of this information weโ€™re collecting is super helpful and useful.โ€ I count off on my fingers: โ€œAmelia was a psycho, Castle wants to be BFFs with Anderson, Warner has midnight fantasies about killing people, and Castle made Amelia think that Warner is a lost little bunny trying to find his way home.โ€

When everyone stares at me, confused, I clarify:

โ€œCastle basically gave Amelia the idea that she could walk into a room and murder Warner! He pretty much told her that Warner was about as harmful as a dumpling.โ€

โ€œOh,โ€ Sam and Nouria say at the same time.

โ€œI donโ€™t think she wanted to murder him,โ€ Castle says quickly. โ€œIโ€™m sure she justโ€”โ€

โ€œDad, please.โ€ Nouriaโ€™s voice is sharp and final. โ€œEnough.โ€ She shares a glance with Sam, and takes a deep breath.

โ€œListen,โ€ she says, trying for a calmer tone. โ€œWe knew, when you got here, that weโ€™d have to deal with this situation eventually, but I think itโ€™s time we had a talk about our roles and responsibilities around here.โ€

โ€œOh. I see.โ€ Castle clasps his hands. Stares at the wall. He looks so sad and small and ancient. Even his dreads seem more silver than black these days. Sometimes I forget heโ€™s almost fifty. Most people think heโ€™s, like, fifteen years younger than he actually is, but thatโ€™s just because heโ€™s always looked really, really good for his age. But for the first time in years, I feel like Iโ€™m beginning to see the number on his face. He looks tired. Worn out.

But that doesnโ€™t mean heโ€™s done here.

Castleโ€™s still got so much more to do. So much more to give. And I canโ€™t just sit here and let him be shoved aside. Ignored. I want to shout at someone. I want to tell Nouria and Sam that they canโ€™t just kick Castle to the curb like this. Not after everything. Not like this.

And Iโ€™m about to say something exactly like that, when Nouria speaks. โ€œSam and I,โ€ she says, โ€œwould like to offer you an official position as our

senior adviser here at the Sanctuary.โ€

Castleโ€™s head perks up. โ€œSenior adviser?โ€ He stares at Nouria. Stares at Sam. โ€œYouโ€™re not asking me to leave?โ€

Nouria looks suddenly confused.

โ€œLeave? Dad, you just got here. Sam and I want you to stay for as long as you like. We just think itโ€™s important that we all know what weโ€™re doing here, so that we can manage things in as efficient and organized a manner as possible. Itโ€™s hard for Sam and me to be effective at our jobs if weโ€™re worried about tiptoeing around your feelings, and even though itโ€™s hard to have conversations like this, we figured it would be best to jusโ€”โ€

Castle pulls Nouria into a hug so fierce, so full of love, I feel my eyes sting with emotion. I actually have to look away for a moment.

When I turn back, Castle is beaming.

โ€œIโ€™d be honored to advise in any way that I can,โ€ Castle says. โ€œAnd if I havenโ€™t said it enough, let me say it again: Iโ€™m so proud of you, Nouria. So proud of both of you,โ€ he says, looking at Sam. โ€œThe boys wouldโ€™ve been so proud.โ€

Nouriaโ€™s eyes go glassy with emotion. Even Sam seems moved. One more minute of this, and Iโ€™m going to need a tissue.

โ€œRight, well.โ€ Warner is on his feet. โ€œIโ€™m glad the attempt on my life was able to bring your family together. Iโ€™m leaving now.โ€

โ€œWaitโ€”โ€ I grab Warnerโ€™s arm and he shoves me off.

โ€œIf you keep touching me without my permission, I will remove your hands from your body.โ€

I ignore that. โ€œShouldnโ€™t we tell them that weโ€™re leaving?โ€ Sam frowns. โ€œLeaving?โ€

Nouriaโ€™s eyebrows fly up. โ€œWe?โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re going to get J,โ€ I explain. โ€œSheโ€™s back in Oceania. James told us everything. Speaking of whichโ€” You should probably talk to him. Heโ€™s got some news about Adam you wonโ€™t like, news that I donโ€™t care to repeat.โ€

โ€œKent betrayed all of you to save himself.โ€

โ€œTo saveย James,โ€ I clarify, shooting Warner a dirty look. โ€œAnd that was not cool, man. I just said I didnโ€™t want to talk about it.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m trying to be efficient.โ€

Castle looks stunned. He says nothing. He just looks stunned.

โ€œTalk to James,โ€ I say. โ€œHeโ€™ll tell you whatโ€™s happening. But Warner and I are going to catch a planeโ€”โ€

โ€œSteal a plane.โ€

โ€œRight, steal a plane, before the end of the day. And, uh, you knowโ€” weโ€™ll just go get J and be back real quick,ย bim bam boom.โ€

Nouria and Sam are staring at me like Iโ€™m an idiot. โ€œBim bam boom?โ€ Warner says.

โ€œYeah, you know, likeโ€โ€”I clap my hands togetherโ€”โ€œboom. Done.

Easy.โ€

Warner turns away from me with a sigh.

โ€œWaitโ€” So, just the two of you are doing this?โ€ Sam asks. Sheโ€™s frowning.

โ€œHonestly, the fewer, the better,โ€ Nouria answers for me. โ€œThat way, there are fewer bodies to hide, fewer actions to coordinate. Regardless, Iโ€™d

offer to come with you, but we have so many still wounded that we need to care forโ€”and now that Amelia is dead, thereโ€™s sure to be more emotional upheaval to manage.โ€

Castleโ€™s eyes light up. โ€œWhile theyโ€™re going after Ella,โ€ he says to Nouria and Sam, โ€œand the two of you are running things here, I was thinking Iโ€™d reach out to the friends in my network. Let them know whatโ€™s happening, and that change is afoot. I can help coordinate our moves around the globe.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s a great idea,โ€ Sam says. โ€œMaybe we cโ€”โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t care,โ€ Warner says loudly, and turns for the door. โ€œAnd Iโ€™m leaving now. Kishimoto, if youโ€™re coming, keep up.โ€

โ€œRight,โ€ I say, trying to sound important. โ€œYup. Bye.โ€ I shoot a quick two-finger salute at everyone and run straight for the door only to slam hard into Nazeera.

Nazeera.

Holy shit. Sheโ€™s awake. Sheโ€™s perfect. Sheโ€™sย pissed.

โ€œYou two arenโ€™t going anywhere without me,โ€ she says.
