Chapter no 35 – AIDENโ€Œ

Collide

SUMMER SHOULD HAVE just punched me in the face because every word out of her mouth was salt on open wounds. For some reason when Iโ€™m around her everything stops being logical and clear-cut. Instead, it blurs into a turbulent storm.

She wants to see other people.

Why the fuck did I agree to that? I couldn’t exactly throw a fit and demand we become exclusive. Her panic when I told her I know what I want, was enough for me to reel in the caveman act. Iโ€™m clinging onto herย maybeย like a rope from a cliff. But if Iโ€™ve learned anything about Summer, itโ€™s that sheโ€™ll set her own path. Pushing her into something would only hurt me in the long run.

Yeah. Iโ€™m thinking about the long run now.

No ice time means I can bury my feelings under a bench press.

When Kian enters the weight room, he holds up a neon green helmet that has a dozen modifications. โ€œTa-da!โ€

โ€œWhat is that contraption?โ€ Dylan drops his weight to look.

โ€œItโ€™s protective headgear. Got it custom-made after that brain dysfunction seminar.โ€

โ€œDoesnโ€™t seem like youโ€™ve made much use of it,โ€ jokes Cole. Kian aims a sharp eye at him. โ€œWatch it, Carter.โ€

Coleโ€™s shoulders slump, the joke not holding up in a group of seniors. I would have found it funny if I wasnโ€™t sulking.

I zone out when Kian explains his helmet, and I donโ€™t realize Iโ€™m simmering until Dylan stands in front of me.

He tilts his head in observation. โ€œYouโ€™re a mess.โ€ โ€œThanks,โ€ I say dryly.

โ€œAll this over some girl?โ€

Iโ€™m hoping my middle finger conveys my thoughts on him boiling Summer down toย some girl.

โ€œJeez, I thought Iโ€™d never see the day you were off your game. Youโ€™re Aiden fucking Crawford, man. There isnโ€™t a girl on campus who doesnโ€™t have you as her hall pass.โ€

His useless pep talk only reminds me of Summerโ€™s sordid words. โ€œKeep running your mouth and see what happens.โ€

He raises his hands in defense. โ€œAnd moody too. Iโ€™ll run to the store and get you some tampons. What kind do you like?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ll need them when I make your nose bleed.โ€

โ€œHeavy flow it is,โ€ he snickers. โ€œIโ€™m kidding, man, I can see why youโ€™re so bent out of shape. If it makes you feel any better, Iโ€™d consider monogamy for her too.โ€

His words are comical because monogamy for Dylan is as repellent as bug spray to a mosquito.

โ€œI mean sheโ€™s smokinโ€”โ€

โ€œFair warning,โ€ I say. โ€œI will punch you in the face if you finish that sentence.โ€

He barks out a laugh, going back to lifting his weights.

Kian approaches. โ€œNot to make you feel worse, but sheโ€™s going on a date,โ€ he says gently like Iโ€™m a fragile toddler getting news that my favorite blanket has gone missing.

The flare of heat in my chest canโ€™t be healthy. Everything in me wants to ignore him, but curiosity is a dangerous emotion.

โ€œWith whom?โ€

โ€œSome accounting major.โ€

Thatโ€™s a stake to the heart. Her five-year plan is nearing reality, now that Iโ€™m not disrupting it. Fuck, what I would do to disrupt all her complicated plans and keep her mindlessly in bed with me.

โ€œHow do you know that?โ€

โ€œI overheard Amara when I was studying at her dorm,โ€ he says.

Unlike me, Kianโ€™s been spending time with Summer because of exams.

Would it be crazy if I transferred into her class?ย Yes.

โ€œWhat are you going to do?โ€ This time all the guys crowd me. Even Cole and Sebastian approach, probably aware of everything because of Kianโ€™s big mouth. Though theyโ€™re well acquainted with Summerโ€™s presence in my bedroom over the past few weeks.

โ€œNothing.โ€

Curious faces fall, and they stare at me like Iโ€™ve gone crazy. โ€œYour girl is going on a date with another guy, and youโ€™re going to doย nothing?โ€ Cole asks incredulously.

Kian starts, โ€œIf I were to give my two centsโ€”โ€ โ€œDonโ€™t,โ€ we all say. His face contorts with shock.

โ€œI have more experience with complicated relationships than any of you,โ€ he defends.

โ€œYour stalker doesnโ€™t count as a complicated relationship, Ishida. That was just complicated. Period,โ€ says Eli.

โ€œOkay, but what Iโ€™ve learned isโ€”โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t duplicate house keys and give them to someone you just met?โ€ I offer.

โ€œDonโ€™t leave your car in the driveway for someone to siphon gas from it?โ€ Dylan adds.

The guys shake with laughter. Iโ€™m sure we could provide a dozen more examples of things Tabitha did to him, but he pouts. โ€œYou know what? You donโ€™t deserve my wisdom.โ€

I groan when he does that wounded puppy thing with his face. โ€œSorry buddy, weโ€™re joking. What did you want to say?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want to tell you now.โ€

โ€œFine with me.โ€ Dylan stands and the rest of the guys agree. โ€œOkay, okay.โ€ He blocks them. โ€œGirls are like buttonsโ€”โ€

Coach clears his throat, cutting him off. โ€œIshida, what have I told you about gossiping in the weight room?โ€

โ€œThat it fosters healthy connections among growing boys?โ€ He smiles, white teeth on display.

The glare Kilner sends his way is sharp enough to make everyone stand straighter. Heโ€™s got that angry vein in his forehead that usually pops when Kianโ€™s involved. โ€œOne more word from you, and Iโ€™ll make sure you never see that ice again.โ€

Despite the threat, Kian opens his mouth to speak, but Eli elbows him with a sharp look.

โ€œCoach, what would you do if the girl you want is going out with someone else?โ€ Cole asks.

I shoot him an irritated look. The last thing I need is Kilner in my business. Though, he is happily married with four kids, so he must know a whole lot more than I do.

Coach eyes me. โ€œShower girl?โ€ โ€œSummer,โ€ I supply.

His brows knit, and his small smile is almost undetectable. โ€œOnly a matter of time with you two,โ€ he mutters. โ€œYou know her better than anyone else does. But I know sheโ€™s got a good head on her shoulders and she thinks hard before committing to somethingโ€”orย someone. Still, you gotta let people come to their own decisions, even if you think you know whatโ€™s best.โ€

I consider his words. While I want to stop Summer from going on that date, I know I was right in what I said to her. But that doesn’t mean Iโ€™ll let her forget my existence in her life.
