โWHY ARE YOU zoned out?โ Tyler looks at me with a weird expression as he enters the private study pod.
A restlessness flares at the memory of last night. The pressure of Aidenโs fingers pressing into my thighs and dirty words pressed between my legs sends a heat wave crashing into me.
I unzip my jacket. โHavenโt had any caffeine yet.โ
Or maybe itโs that Aiden gave me a mind-numbing orgasm, and Iโm pretty sure Iโve become stupid. That would be the only explanation for staring at my blank computer screen for twenty-five minutes. Nothing like flashbacks to the best head youโve ever gotten to distract you in the middle of exam season.
There is a high chance that Iโm prone to making bad decisions. Maybe itโs a genetic predisposition that should be studied closely because I know I should have denied the โkiss’ and just finished myself off, thinking about the version of him I could stomach, like an accountant with no ties to the wretched sport.
โHere you go.โ Tyler sets a cup down and sits beside me. โThanks,โ I say, taking a sip. โWhat are you doing here?โ โI canโt hang out with my favorite girl?โ
I swivel my head to search. โWhere?โ
He doesnโt laugh. โItโs the truth. All the other girls I talk to Iโve either slept with or am planning on it.โ
โUgh!โ I gag, putting my tea down. โYouโre a pig.โ
Heโs unperturbed. โYou should be flattered that weโre genuine friends.โ โOnly because youโve known me since we were kids.โ
โNah, I think itโs because your dad is one scary dude. That and Iโve had you throw up on my shoes.โ
โYouโre the one who brought booze to a school assembly.โ โAnd you drank to show off,โ he counters.
โYou dared me in front of everyone!โ
He shakes his head, wearing a grimace. โNever mind. I think itโs because we fight like siblings.โ He shoves my head away in a playful move, and I flip him off.
โWhatโs up with you and Crawford?โ he suddenly asks.
I had plucked Aiden out of my head for a split second, only for the question to drag me back to square one. How do I answer that?ย Heโs helped with my assignment and barges into my dorm to give me orgasms?
โHeโs helping me with my research.โ I feel him scrutinizing me. โWhat?โ โWhy are you blushing?โ
I pull out my phone to check my reflection. โMakeup.โ
Iโm not wearing any makeup. Despite the small amount of melanin my mother passed down to me, my cheeks still glow red. Now, the guy is making me blush? He is seriously pissing me off, though itโs hard to be mad at someone when your body has assembled a choir for them.
Tyler hums in acknowledgement, though I know he sees right through me. โI still donโt forgive you for bailing on the Christmas party, by the way. You know those things are torturous.โ
โI do. Thatโs why I didnโt show up.โ
โYou promised. I donโt take promise-breaking lightly, Summer.โ
โIโm sorry. I couldnโt stand there in front of all those people and pretend weโre a perfect family.โ Our Christmas celebration is hosted by a rotating handful of families in the league. Last year it was my parentsโ turn, so our house transformed into a Winter Wonderland. From the pictures my sisters sent, I couldn’t be happier that I didnโt attend.
โI get it, but I donโt forgive you.โ
I sigh loudly. โWhat do you want?โ
It doesnโt even take him a second to answer. โSet me up with your roommate.โ
Iโm surprised my head doesnโt snap from how fast I turn to him. โNo way, thatโs my best friend.โ
โIโmย your best friend.โ
โAmara doesnโt like you.โ
His gaze turns quizzical. โWhy?โ
โCause youโre a know-it-all asshole. This shouldnโt be news.โ โIโve spoken to her once, like a year ago.โ
I shake my head. โShe also saw you at some party going into a room with four girls.โ
โSo sheโs slut shaming me?โ
โNo, you idiot. Two of those girls had boyfriends.โ
He smiles like heโs recounting the memory. โAnd how is that my problem? It was completely consensual for all parties.โ
โWell, it doesnโt matter. She likes Eli.โ The words are out of my mouth before I can shove them back in. I wince when I see the playful expression on his face melt away.
โWestbrook?โ
I nod. A shadow crosses his face, but it’s gone almost instantly. Heโs quiet for the rest of the hour, and I donโt bother prodding, aside from occasional homework questions.
By the time I finish studying, itโs time for my first class of the day. Tyler turns to the East Hall, and I walk down to my class.
Kian Ishida drapes his arm over my shoulders, looking sullen. Anything but pure happiness is rare for him. โWhatโs wrong?โ
He exhales an anguished sigh. โYou think you know people, but they all end up being the same.โ
What I learned from being friends with Kian is to never ask him to elaborate. I nod, though I have no idea why his mood is so sour. When we pass the student aid center, Dylan comes out with an ice pack on his face. He waves at us, and I notice the new shiner on his jaw. โOuch, what happened to you?โ
โLetโs just say I deserve it,โ Dylan says, heading in the opposite direction.
The last time I saw Dylan, he had a busted lip, and he said the same thing. I thought it was a one-time thing, but it seems like heโs made himself an enemy.
I turn to Kian. โWho did that to him?โ
โA guy on the basketball team. Dylan slept with his grandma.โ I choke on my spit. โYou have to be joking.โ
โTo be fair, sheโs still pretty young. Canโt say I wouldnโt have done the same.โ
โYouโreโโ
โHot? Smart? Extraordinary?โ โDisgusting.โ
โNot the adjective I would have picked.โ He shrugs. As we pass by the quad he makes a weird noise. โI seriously canโt believe you dated that guy.โ
I follow his line of sight to Donny setting up for a chess event. โIt was freshman year, and he wasnโt always like that.โ
โSo, he just started being a preppy douchebag now?โ
โUh no, he always presented himself that way. I think itโs because his mom still does his shopping.โ
He laughs. โThen I guess heโs your Tabitha.โ โTabitha?โ
โYou know, like your one dating mistake.โ
Iโm sure there is a story there, but I only shrug. โYeah, I guess.โ
โSo, are you coming to Aidenโs birthday?โ he asks as we descend the steps.
โItโs his birthday?โ He hasnโt brought it up, not that weโve talked after what happened.
โWell, not really. Itโs January 5th, but since our games are mostly away at the beginning of the term, we celebrate it later.โ
โThat is an entire month late.โ
โA few weeks, a month, who cares? Are you coming or not?โ โOf course, Iโll bring the party hats and streamers!โ I clap.
Heโs unamused by my fake enthusiasm. โSeriously, you should come. Itโll be fun.โ He tries again when weโre seated. โBesides, I thought you and Aiden were getting along. What happened?โ
If I thought about what happened, I wonโt get any work done. โNothing. I just have exams.โ
โSo does everyone else. Just make an appearance with Amara and Cassidy.โ He blushes at the mention of Cassidy, and I try not to laugh. I think someoneโs got a crush. My best friends have apparently become a hot commodity with hockey players.
โYou seem to have a vested interest in whether I attend.โ
โCause youโre my friend, and I want to hang out with you. Besides, I donโt know who my real friends are these days.โ
โWhat does that mean?โ I ask, despite knowing not to. โHave you ever been betrayed, Summer?โ
