Chapter no 23

From Blood and Ash

Besides the Duke and the Dark One, he was the last person I wanted to see standing behind me. Like Vikter, his red tunic was sleeveless, and behind his mask, his pitch-black eyes seemed to glimmer. I managed to keep my voice level as I said, โ€œMy Lord.โ€

A sardonic, tight-lipped grin twisted his mouth as his gaze flickered over me, lingering in a way that really made me wish that I were covered head to toe in a sack. Finally, he tore his gaze away and nodded at Tawny and Vikter. Then his attention settled back on me. โ€œI hear that a certain Priestess is very unhappy with you.โ€

The tension returned, sinking its rigid claws into my neck as I stared up at him.

The Lord stepped in closeโ€”too close for any level of propriety. โ€œI do believe youโ€™re in for another lesson, my dear.โ€

I inhaled sharply, almost overcome by some kind of thick, musky cologne. My gaze flew to his as his scent triggered a memory. He hadnโ€™t smelled of cologne the night heโ€™d trapped me in an alcoveโ€”the night Malessa had been murdered.

Heโ€™d smelled of something else thenโ€”something sweet and musky. Jasmine.

Heโ€™d smelled of jasmine.

My mind immediately went to the petal Iโ€™d found under the chair in the room Malessa had been found in. There hadnโ€™t been jasmine in that room, unless it had been replaced by the lilies, but hadnโ€™t Tawnyโ€”?

โ€œExcuse me,โ€ Vikter stepped in, placing a hand on my arm. โ€œWe need to beโ€”โ€

โ€œNo need to run off.โ€ Mazeenโ€™s gaze remained fixed on mine. โ€œIโ€™ll be on my way now. Enjoy the Rite.โ€ And with that, he slipped around us and headed down the steps onto the main floor of the Great Hall.

โ€œWhat was that about?โ€ Vikter asked, his voice low.

โ€œItโ€™s nothing.โ€ My thoughts raced as I turned back to Tawny. โ€œYou said you saw Malessa the day she died. That morning, correct?โ€

Tawnyโ€™s lips pinched. โ€œYes. I did.โ€

โ€œWas she carrying a bouquet? Do you remember what kind of flowers it had?โ€

She blinked. โ€œIโ€ฆI donโ€™t know. I know they were white.โ€

The petal in the room had been white, and it had definitely been jasmine. My stomach dipped.

Her gaze searched mine. โ€œWhy are you asking?โ€ โ€œThatโ€™s a good question,โ€ Vikter chimed in.

โ€œI donโ€™t knowโ€ฆโ€ I looked out over the mass of people, unable to find the Lord. I thought about how heโ€™d stood in that doorway, staring and unmoving. Heโ€™d been there when Rylan had escorted me back to my chambers. And heโ€™d come out of one of the rooms. Which one, I couldnโ€™t be sure, but what did any of that mean anyway?

He couldโ€™ve been with Malessa before she died, or it could be a coincidence, but an Atlantian had killed her. That much was clear. Nothing else couldโ€™ve made such a wound without getting blood everywhere.

โ€œPoppy.โ€ Vikter touched my arm lightly as the Priest moved toward the center of the dais. โ€œIs everything okay?โ€

I nodded. I would speak to him later about it, but I wasnโ€™t even sure what I was thinking.

โ€œWhere is the Duke?โ€ Tawny whispered. โ€œThe Rite is starting.โ€

And he still wasnโ€™t here. The Duchess kept pacing to her left where the dais could be accessed by the back entrance.

โ€œWe are gathered here tonight to honor the gods,โ€ the Priest spoke, hushing the crowd gathered on the floor below. โ€œTo honor the Rite.โ€

โ€œExcuse me,โ€ a soft voice came from behind us.

I turned the same time as Vikter, and another shock greeted me as I recognized the woman standing there.

It was Agnes. Oh, my godsโ€ฆ

My eyes widened as she glanced nervously between Vikter and me. She was wearing red, like everyone else, a skirt and blouse dyed to match. She looked better than the last time I had seen her, but there were deep shadows under her eyes that told me that her grieving had not been easy.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry to interrupt,โ€ she said, keeping her gaze downcast. โ€œI saw youโ€ฆand I had to come over.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s okay.โ€ Vikter sent me a look. โ€œWould you like to speak to me somewhere private?โ€

She nodded without looking up, and not for one second did I think she didnโ€™t realize who I was.

Vikterโ€™s gaze met mine. โ€œIโ€™ll be right back.โ€

โ€œActually, I would like to speak to her,โ€ Agnes said as the Priest launched into a prayer. โ€œIf it would be okay.โ€ Her gaze lifted briefly to mine. โ€œIt would only be for a moment.โ€

Vikter started to deny her request, but people were beginning to pay attention, sending sharp looks of reprimand in our direction. โ€œItโ€™s okay,โ€ I said quickly. โ€œWe can step outside.โ€

Who is that? Tawny mouthed at me, and I forced a casual shrug. โ€œIโ€™ll be here,โ€ she said.

Vikter quickly escorted Agnes out into the nearly empty corridor. There were a few stragglers as they hurried into the Hall. He led us to an alcove near one of the open archways that led out to the garden. โ€œItโ€™s very unwise for you to approach us,โ€ he began almost immediately.

โ€œI know. Iโ€™m sorry. I shouldnโ€™t have, but Iโ€ฆโ€ She glanced at me, her eyes widening slightly. โ€œI didnโ€™t think youโ€™d be here.โ€

โ€œHow did you know it was me?โ€ I asked.

Vikterโ€™s head jerked in my direction, his mask doing very little to hide his disbelief. The fact that sheโ€™d identified me when she hadnโ€™t seen my face was worth the risks.

โ€œI didnโ€™t until I heard that Ascendedโ€”I mean, the Lordโ€”speaking to you,โ€ she said. โ€œI wasnโ€™t expecting to see you here,โ€ she said again.

โ€œDammit,โ€ Vikter muttered under his breath.

Well, that was another thing I could hate Lord Mazeen for. Not that there needed to be another reason.

โ€œWhat did you want to speak to her about?โ€

Agnesโ€™s throat worked on a swallow. โ€œIf I could speak to her in private

โ€”โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not going to happen.โ€ The softness was gone from Vikterโ€™s

tone. โ€œAt all.โ€

Trepidation flickered across the womanโ€™s flushed face.

โ€œItโ€™s not,โ€ I said. โ€œWhatever you need to say to me can be said in front of Vikter.โ€

She clasped her hands together. โ€œYouโ€ฆI justโ€ฆI wanted to thank you for what you did.โ€ She glanced around before continuing. โ€œWhat you did for my husband and for me.โ€

โ€œThere are no thanks needed,โ€ I assured her, wondering why she had wanted to speak to me alone about that.

Vikter was obviously wondering the same thing based on the way his eyes squinted.

โ€œI know. You have been so kind. Both of you. I donโ€™t thinkโ€”no, Iย knowย I wouldnโ€™t have been able to deal with it by myself. I justโ€ฆโ€ She trailed off, pressing her lips together.

A cheer rose inside, and I glanced toward the entrance. Names were being announced. Ladies and Lords in Wait, who would be handed over to the staff.

โ€œYou just what?โ€ Vikter asked.

โ€œItโ€™s just thatโ€ฆโ€ Her chest rose with a heavy breath. โ€œI heard about what happened to youโ€”whatโ€™s been happening here. Thatโ€ฆthat poor girl. And that someone tried to take you. There are rumors.โ€

โ€œWhat rumors?โ€ Vikter demanded.

Agnes dampened her lips. โ€œPeople have said that it was the Dark One coming for you.โ€

That wasnโ€™t exactly news, but goosebumps still broke out over my

skin.

โ€œI donโ€™t know about that poor girl,โ€ Agnes continued. โ€œI justโ€ฆI didnโ€™t

think youโ€™d be here tonight. When I saw you, I felt that I needed to tell you what Iโ€™ve heard.

โ€œThank you,โ€ I said as another cheer erupted from inside. โ€œI appreciate

it.โ€

Agnes briefly met my gaze. โ€œI only want to make sure youโ€™re safe.โ€ โ€œAs do I.โ€ Vikter straightened to his full height.

She nodded. โ€œEspecially in crowds like this. There are so many people,

and if heโ€ฆhe got in here once before, he could do it again. Others could, too.โ€

โ€œHe got in here twice before,โ€ I corrected. โ€œOr at least two who support him did.โ€

Her mouth opened, but then she closed it.

โ€œI think by now youโ€™ve realized that Iโ€™m her personal Royal Guard,โ€ Vikter said, and Agnes nodded. โ€œIt is my sole duty to keep her safe. I appreciate your willingness to tell me what youโ€™ve heard.โ€

She nodded once more.

โ€œWe would be forever in your debt if you could tell us everything you know,โ€ he continued. โ€œAnd I feel as if there is more that youโ€™re not sharing.โ€

I looked sharply at Vikter. โ€œIโ€™m not sure what you mean.โ€ โ€œYouโ€™re not?โ€ he asked softly.

She shook her head. โ€œIโ€™ve taken up too much of your time. I should be going.โ€ She started backing up. โ€œIโ€™m sorry. Justโ€ฆโ€ Her gaze met mine. โ€œBe careful. Please.โ€

Agnes turned, hurrying off toward the front of the castle. Vikter started after but stopped. โ€œDammit,โ€ he growled. โ€œWhere is Hawke?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€ I looked around, my gaze snagging on one of the garden archways and to the darkness that lay beyond. โ€œWhat do you think she wasnโ€™t telling us?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not sure.โ€ He rubbed a hand through his hair. โ€œItโ€™s only a feeling. Maybe Iโ€™m just being paranoid. Come on.โ€ He placed a hand on my back. โ€œIโ€™m sure itโ€™s nothing.โ€

I wasnโ€™t so sure if he really believed that, but I let him guide me back into the Great Hall and to Tawnyโ€™s side.

โ€œIs everything okay?โ€ she asked.

โ€œYes.โ€ Or at least, I hoped so. I had no idea what to make of what Agnes had said.

Tawny glanced at Vikter and then said, โ€œTheyโ€™re almost done with the third sons and daughters.โ€

I checked out the dais. โ€œThe Duke still hasnโ€™t arrived? โ€œNo,โ€ she whispered. โ€œOdd, right?โ€

It was very odd. Had something happened when he went to see the Descenter the night before? If so, then something wouldโ€™ve been announced. Between the missing Duke, my suspicions concerning Lord Mazeen, and Agnesโ€™s unexpected presence, my mind was all over the place as the ceremony continued. Honest to the gods, it sounded like the Priest was speaking a different language. Maybe he was. I was unable to pay

attention, and that was a shame because Iโ€™d always been curious about the

โ€”

The back of my neck tingled, and the strongest sense of awareness swept over me. I couldnโ€™t explain it, but I knew that when I looked over my shoulder, I would see him.

Hawke.

And I was right.

The next breath I took seemed to go nowhere as my gaze swept over the crimson-hued breeches and red tunic that showed just a hint of skin below his throat, as well as the carved line of his jaw and his lush lips. The curve of the red domino mask drew the eye to the rise of his cheekbones. A strand of dark hair tumbled over his forehead, brushing the stiff fabric.

He wasโ€ฆ

Hawke looked like I imagined one of the gods waiting in the Temples appearedโ€”striking and unattainable, alluring in a way that was a little frightening.

And I knew that he was looking at me just as intently as I was him. A wave of shivers followed his gaze as it tracked over me with such concentration that it felt like a caress. Every inch of my skin, what was exposed and what wasnโ€™t, became hyperaware. The flutter was back with a vengeance.

โ€œHi,โ€ I said, and immediately wished Iโ€™d kept my mouth shut.

One side of his lips kicked up, and that dimple of his made an appearance. โ€œYou lookโ€ฆlovely,โ€ he said, and my stomach dipped in the most pleasant way possible. He turned to Tawny. โ€œAs do you.โ€

Tawny smiled. โ€œThank you.โ€

He glanced at Vikter. โ€œYou, as well.โ€

Vikter snorted, and I smiled while Tawny giggled. โ€œYou do look exceptionally handsome tonight,โ€ she said, and I swore Vikterโ€™s cheeks deepened in color as I turned back to the dais.

โ€œSorry for the delay,โ€ Hawke said as he came to stand behind me.

โ€œIs everything okay?โ€ I asked as I looked up at the dais. If Lord Mazeen knew about what had happened with Priestess Analia, then sheโ€™d definitely gone to the Duke as expected. I doubted sheโ€™d left out what Hawke had done.

โ€œOf course,โ€ he replied. โ€œI was pulled to assist with security sweeps. I didnโ€™t think it would take as long as it did.โ€

I wanted to ask if anyone had said anything to him about what had happened with the Priestess. Still, if I said it in front of Vikter, heโ€™d have questions, and I didnโ€™t want him to worry.

As those given to the Court and to the Temples were led out, the Duchess stepped off the dais, stopping to speak to the families and then some other Court members. Next to the dais, music began to play, and servants entered from the access doors, carrying trays of champagne. Ladies and Lords, along with those in Wait, broke into smaller groups. Merchants and other commoners joined them.

Vikter was eyeing the front before he turned to me. โ€œI need to speak to the Commander,โ€ he said. When I nodded, he turned to Hawke.

โ€œI have her,โ€ Hawke answered before Vikter could even speak, and that stupid, funny motion hit my stomach again.

Expecting Vikter to challenge the statement, I was surprised when he accepted the answer. Was he coming around to liking Hawke? Trusting him? Or did he just want to catch the Commander before he lost sight of him?

Probably the latter.

โ€œHave I missed anything?โ€ Hawke moved to my right, standing about a foot or so behind me.

โ€œYou havenโ€™t,โ€ Tawny answered. โ€œUnless you were looking forward to a bunch of prayers and teary-eyed goodbyes.โ€

โ€œNot particularly,โ€ he commented dryly.

That reminded me. I looked at Tawny. โ€œDid they call out the Tulis family?โ€

Her brow creased. โ€œYou know, I donโ€™t think they did.โ€

Did that mean they hadnโ€™t come? If so, that would be considered treason. Guards would go to their home, the child would still be sent to serve the gods, and Mr. and Mrs. Tulis would most likely be imprisoned.

The only way theyโ€™d have a chance was if they left the city, but no one came in and out of the city without the Royals knowing. Theyโ€™d have to be incredibly well connected to even attempt such a feat, and even if they did, where would they go? Word would be sent to all surrounding cities and towns to be on the lookout for them.

Knowing all of that, I still understood why theyโ€™d take the risk. It was their only child.

My attention shifted as the Duchess drew near, flanked by several Royal Guards who, like Vikter and Hawke, had swapped out their white mantles and typical black garb.

โ€œPenellaphe,โ€ she said, her well-practiced smile in place. โ€œYour Grace,โ€ I murmured as demurely as possible.

She nodded at Tawny and Hawke, her gaze lingering on him for a few seconds. I bit down on the inside of my cheek to stop myself from smiling. โ€œAre you enjoying the Rite?โ€

Considering I only saw a few minutes of it, I nodded. โ€œIs His Grace not attending?โ€

โ€œI believe he is running late,โ€ she answered smoothly, but the corners of her mouth tightened. She stepped closer, lowering her voice. โ€œRemember who you are, Penellaphe. You are not to mingle or socialize.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ I assured her.

Her dark eyes briefly met mine, and then she was on her way, like a jeweled hummingbird, buzzing from one group of people to the next. Laughter rang out from the floor, drawing my attention. I saw Loren and Dafina.

โ€œI have a question,โ€ Hawke said. I inclined my head. โ€œYes?โ€

โ€œIf youโ€™re not supposed to mingle or socialize, which are the same thing, by the way,โ€ he said, and I grinned, โ€œwhat is the point of you being allowed to attend?โ€

My grin faded.

โ€œThat is actually a good question,โ€ Tawny remarked, hands lightly clasped in front of her.

โ€œIโ€™m not sure what the point is, to be honest,โ€ I admitted.

For several minutes, none of us spoke. I lost sight of the Duchess, and the Duke still hadnโ€™t appeared from what I could tell.

I sighed as I glanced at Tawny.

She really did look absolutely beautiful tonight, the red complementing the richness of her brown skin. I knew what she was so vividly focused on without following her gaze. Her expression could only be described as wistful as she watched couples pair off for some waltz I probably would never have been able to master even if Iโ€™d been allowed. Her eyes tracked their movements fervently, and I knew for a fact that she

knew every step of that dance. Why was she here and not out there with the rest of them?

Of course, I knew the answer. It was because of me.

Guilt settled in my chest like a stone. โ€œTawny?โ€ She twisted toward me. โ€œYes?โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to stand here beside me. You can go and have fun.โ€ โ€œWhat?โ€ Her nose scrunched against the mask. โ€œIโ€™m having fun.

Arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œOf course, but you donโ€™t have to be right beside me. You should be out there.โ€ I gestured to the dancers and beyond, to where people huddled together in groups of three and four. โ€œItโ€™s okay.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m fine.โ€ She plastered on a bright smile, and my heart squeezed. โ€œIโ€™d rather be standing here with you than out there without you.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re the best,โ€ I said, wishing I could hug her. Instead, I reached between us and squeezed her arm. โ€œYou really are, but I donโ€™t need you to be my shadow tonight. I already have two of them.โ€

Tawnyโ€™s gaze flicked over my shoulder. โ€œYou really only have one.

Vikter is still with the Commander.โ€

โ€œAnd one is all I need. Please.โ€ I squeezed her arm again. โ€œTawny, go.

Please.โ€

Her gaze searched mine, and I could tell that she was waffling. Before she could decide not to, I lied, โ€œIโ€™m actually feeling very tired. I didnโ€™t sleep all that well last night, so I donโ€™t plan to be down here for much longer.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re sure?โ€ I nodded.

Tawnyโ€™s entire body practically vibrated with the effort required not to throw her arms around me, but she managed a subdued nod as I released her hand. She gave me one last long look and then headed down the steps, crossing the floor to where Dafina and Loren stood with three Lords in Wait.

I smiled, relieved. I hoped she let herself enjoy her night, and to ensure that, I knew I needed to leave. If I stayed down here for any amount of time, standing between the enormous, red geraniums, she would come back.

I felt Hawke step closer before he even spoke, and a shivery wave of warmth danced over my skin. I turned my head to the right, to where he stood no more than a few inches behind me.

โ€œThat was kind of you,โ€ he commented as he stared out over the floor. โ€œNot particularly. Why should she stand here and do nothing just

because thatโ€™s all I can do?โ€

โ€œIs that really all you can do?โ€

โ€œYou were standing right here when Her Grace reminded me that I am not to mingle orโ€”โ€

โ€œOr fraternize.โ€

โ€œShe said socialize,โ€ I corrected. โ€œBut you donโ€™t have to stay here.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t.โ€ I turned back to the floor, swallowing another sigh. I did have to leave. The idea of returning to my chambers held little appeal, but if I didnโ€™t, Tawny would return to my side. โ€œI would like to go back to my room.โ€

โ€œYou sure?โ€

No. โ€œOf course.โ€ โ€œAfter you, Princess.โ€

I turned, eyes narrowing as he stepped aside. โ€œYou need to stop calling me that.โ€

โ€œBut I like it.โ€

Brushing past him, I lifted the hem of my skirt as I stepped onto the slight rise. โ€œBut I donโ€™t.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s a lie.โ€

I shook my head as I skirted around the groups of smiling, masked faces. None looked in my direction, most having thought twice about whether theyโ€™d seen the Duchess speak with me.

The air was much cooler outside the Great Hall, courtesy of the breeze coming through the open garden entrances. I spared only a quick glance out into the garden before I started down the hall.

โ€œWhere are you going?โ€ Hawke asked.

Stopping, I turned to him in confusion. โ€œBack to my rooms, as Iโ€ฆโ€ I trailed off.

Hawkeโ€™s amber eyes were assessing as they roamed over me, lingering where my hair lay draped over my shoulders. His gaze traveled over the tiny scalloped lace along the bodice of my gown. The neckline wasnโ€™t as low as Iโ€™d seen some of the Ladies in Wait wear, and just the upper swells of my breasts were visible, but thatโ€ฆthat was a lot for me, considering my normal gowns had a neckline up to the throat.

โ€œI was wrong earlier when I said you looked lovely,โ€ he said. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œYou look absolutely exquisite, Poppy. Beautiful,โ€ he said, giving a little shake of his head. โ€œI justโ€ฆI needed to tell you that.โ€

His words brought forth such a sharp, swelling emotion that my control over my gift snapped, and my senses reached out before I could stop them. I didnโ€™t feel pain from him other than the hum of sadness. My gaze flew to his face. I feltโ€ฆsomething else. Two separate emotions. One reminded me of lemonโ€”tart against my tongue. The other sensation was heavier andโ€ฆspicy, a bit smoky. I thought the first might be confusion or maybe uncertainty. As if he were unsure of something. The otherโ€ฆ

Gods.

It took a few moments for my senses to zero in on what that was. It made me feelย hotย andโ€ฆandย achy. It felt like arousal.

โ€œI have an idea,โ€ he said, slowly lifting that intense stare of his to mine.

โ€œYou do?โ€ I felt strangely breathless as I wrangled my gift, closing it down.

He nodded. โ€œIt doesnโ€™t involve returning to your room.โ€

Anticipation and excitement rose, butโ€ฆ โ€œIโ€™m confident that unless I remain at the Rite, I would be expected to return to my room.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re masked, as am I. Youโ€™re not dressed like the Maiden. To use your own ideology from last night, no one will know who either of us is.โ€

โ€œYes, butโ€ฆโ€

โ€œUnless you wish to go back to the room. Maybe youโ€™re so engrossed in that bookโ€”โ€

โ€œI am not engrossed in that book.โ€ My cheeks flushed.

โ€œI know you donโ€™t want to be cooped up in your chambers.โ€ When I opened my mouth, he added, โ€œThereโ€™s no reason to lie to me.โ€

โ€œIโ€ฆโ€ I couldnโ€™t lie. No one would believe me. โ€œAnd where do you suggest that I go?โ€

โ€œWhereย weย go?โ€ Light from the sconces glinted off the curve of his mask as he tilted his chin toward the garden.

My heart skipped at the same moment it twisted. โ€œI donโ€™t know. Itโ€ฆโ€ โ€œIt used to be a place of refuge,โ€ he said. โ€œNow, itโ€™s become a place of

nightmares. But it can only stay that way if you let it.โ€

โ€œIf I let it? How do I change the fact that Rylan died out there?โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t.โ€

I stared up at him. โ€œIโ€™m not following where youโ€™re going with this.โ€

He stepped closer, dipping his chin. โ€œYou canโ€™t change what happened in there. Just like you canโ€™t change the fact that the courtyard used to give you peace. You just replace your last memoryโ€”a bad oneโ€”with a new one

โ€”a good oneโ€”and you keep doing that until the initial one no longer outweighs the replacement.โ€

I opened my mouth, but then I really thought about what heโ€™d said. My gaze traveled to the darkness beyond the door. What heโ€™d said actually made sense. โ€œYou make it sound so easy.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not. Itโ€™s hard and uncomfortable, but it works.โ€ He extended his bare hand, and I looked down, staring at it as if a dangerous animal rested in his palmโ€”a fluffy, cute one that I wanted to pet. โ€œAnd you wonโ€™t be alone. Iโ€™ll be there with you, and not just watching over you.โ€

Iโ€™ll be there with you, and not just watching over you.

My startled gaze lifted to his face. His words struck a chord I tried to never touch. Gods, I couldnโ€™t even begin to know the number of times Iโ€™d felt alone since Ian had left, even though I rarely ever was by myself. But those around me the most were sometimes just there because they had to be. Even Tawny and Vikter. That acknowledgement didnโ€™t lessen how much I knew they cared for me and how much I cared for them, but it also didnโ€™t change that while they were with me, they were sometimes notย present. Nor did it change the fact that I knew a lot of it was in my head. That small, very insecure part of myself that worried that our friendship would be non- existent if Tawny wasnโ€™t my ladyโ€™s maid never really went away. I worried sheโ€™d be like Dafina and Loren and the other Ladies in Wait.

How did Hawke know that? Orย didย he know I felt that way? I wanted to ask, but again, it was something I didnโ€™t like to touch or talk about. Loneliness often brought with it a heavy, coarse blanket of shame, and a cloak constructed of embarrassment.

But with Hawke, even in the short time Iโ€™d known him, I didnโ€™t feel alone. Could it be simply his presence? When he was in a room, he seemed to become the center of it. Or was it more? I couldnโ€™t deny that I was attracted to him, forbidden or not.

And I didnโ€™t want to return to my room, left to confusing thoughts that I couldnโ€™t act upon. I didnโ€™t want to spend another night wishing I was living instead of actually doing it.

Was it wise, though, if I was right about what Iโ€™d felt from him? I couldโ€™ve been wrong, but if I wasnโ€™t? Did I have the willpower to remember what I was? I shouldnโ€™t even attempt to find out

But Iโ€ฆI wanted.

Drawing in a shallow breath, I reached for his hand but stopped. โ€œIf someone saw meโ€ฆsaw youโ€”โ€

โ€œSaw us? Holding hands? Dear gods, the scandal.โ€ Another quick grin surfaced, and this time, the dimple appeared. โ€œNo one is here.โ€ He glanced around the hall. โ€œUnless you see people I canโ€™t.โ€

โ€œYes, I see the spirits of those whoโ€™ve made bad life choices,โ€ I replied dryly.

He chuckled. โ€œI doubt anyone will recognize us in the courtyard. Not with both of us masked, and just the moonlight and a few lamps to light the way.โ€ He wiggled his fingers. โ€œBesides, I have a feeling anyone out there will be too busy to care.โ€

My vast imagination filled in what could possibly cause others to be too busy to care.

โ€œYouโ€™re such a bad influence,โ€ I murmured as I placed my hand in his.

Hawke curled his fingers around mine. The weight and warmth of his hand was a pleasant shock. โ€œOnly the bad can be influenced, Princess.โ€
