The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

โ€œOw, Ruby,โ€ I said, noticeably perturbed.

She nodded covertly to the laundry room to the right of us.

โ€œWhat on earth . . .โ€ I said.

โ€œWould you just open the goddamn door, Evelyn?โ€

I turned the handle, and Ruby stepped in and dragged me with her. She shut the door behind us.

โ€œHere,โ€ she said, handing me one of the cocktails in the dark. โ€œI was getting it for Joy, but you have it. It matches your dress, anyway.โ€

As my eyes adjusted, I took the drink from her. โ€œYouโ€™re lucky it matches my dress. You nearly poured half the drink on it.โ€

With one of her hands now free, Ruby tugged on the pull chain of the light above us. The tiny room lit up and stung my eyes.

โ€œYou have absolutely no decorum tonight, Ruby.โ€

โ€œYou think Iโ€™m worried about what you think of me, Evelyn Hugo? Now, listen, whatโ€™re we going to do?โ€

โ€œWhat are we going to do about what?โ€

โ€œAbout what? About Celia St. James, thatโ€™s what.โ€

โ€œWhat about her?โ€

Ruby hung her head in frustration. โ€œEvelyn, I swear.โ€

โ€œShe gave a great performance. What can we do?โ€ I said.

โ€œThis is exactly what I told Harry would happen. And he said it wouldnโ€™t.โ€

โ€œWell, what do you want me to do about it?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re losing out, too. Or do you not see that?โ€

โ€œOf course I see it!โ€ I cared, obviously. But I also knew I could still win Best Actress. Celia and Ruby would be competing for Best Supporting. โ€œI donโ€™t know what to tell you, Ruby. We were all right about Celia. Sheโ€™s talented and gorgeous and charming, and when youโ€™ve been bested, sometimes itโ€™s good to recognize it and move on.โ€

Ruby looked at me as if I had slapped her.

I had nothing else to say, and she was blocking my way out of the room. So I put the drink to my mouth and downed it in two gulps.

โ€œThis is not the Evelyn I know and respect,โ€ Ruby said.

โ€œOh, Ruby, put a lid on it.โ€

She finished her drink. โ€œPeople have been saying all sorts of things about the two of you, and I didnโ€™t believe it. But now . . . I donโ€™t know.โ€

โ€œPeople have been saying all sorts of things like what?โ€

โ€œYou know.โ€

โ€œI assure you, I havenโ€™t the faintest.โ€

โ€œWhy do you make things so difficult?โ€

โ€œRuby, youโ€™ve pulled me into a laundry room against my will, and youโ€™re barking at me about things I canโ€™t control. Iโ€™m not the difficult one.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s a lesbian, Evelyn.โ€
