The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

But what I was really thinking was, I canโ€™t tell him that. Heโ€™ll think Iโ€™m making fun of him, and heโ€™ll smack me.

COLD, COLD EVELYN

Why would a beautiful couple with a gorgeous five-bedroom home not be interested in filling it up with a brood of children? Youโ€™d have to ask Don Adler and Evelyn Hugo that question.

Or maybe youโ€™d just have to ask Evelyn.

Don wants a baby, and certainly weโ€™ve all been waiting with bated breath to find out when the progeny of those two beautiful creatures will make his or her way into the world. We know any child they have would be sure to send us into fits of swooning.

But Evelynโ€™s saying no.

Instead, all Evelyn talks about is her career, including her new movie, Little Women.

More than that, Evelyn doesnโ€™t even attempt to keep a clean house or mind her husbandโ€™s simple requests, and she canโ€™t be bothered to be kind to the help.

Instead, sheโ€™s out at Schwabโ€™s with single girls like Celia St. James!

Poor Donโ€™s at home, yearning for a child, while Evelynโ€™s out having the time of her life.

Itโ€™s all Evelyn, Evelyn, Evelyn in that house.

And sheโ€™s left a very unsatisfied husband.

IS THIS REALLY HAPPENING?โ€ I said as I threw the magazine onto Harryโ€™s desk. But of course, heโ€™d already seen it.

โ€œItโ€™s not that bad.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not good.โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s not.โ€

โ€œWhy didnโ€™t anyone take care of this?โ€ I asked.

โ€œBecause Sub Rosa isnโ€™t listening to us anymore.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

โ€œThey donโ€™t care about the truth or access to stars. They are just printing whatever they want.โ€

โ€œThey care about money, donโ€™t they?โ€

โ€œYes, but they will make way more by pontificating about the ins and outs of your marriage than we can afford to pay them.โ€

โ€œYou are Sunset Studios.โ€

โ€œAnd if you havenโ€™t noticed, we arenโ€™t making nearly as much money as we used to.โ€

My shoulders slumped. I sat in one of the chairs facing Harryโ€™s desk. There was a knock.

โ€œItโ€™s Celia,โ€ she said through the door.

I walked over and opened it for her.

โ€œI take it youโ€™ve seen the piece,โ€ I said.
