The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

โ€œThatโ€™s why Iโ€™m asking.โ€

The guy behind the counter came back with our milk shakes. He appeared to have to give himself a pep talk just to give them to us.

โ€œNo,โ€ I said to Celia, once he was gone.

โ€œNo what?โ€

โ€œNo, Iโ€™m not using you.โ€

โ€œWell, thatโ€™s a relief,โ€ Celia said. It struck me as painfully naive, the way she so easily, so readily believed me. I was telling the truth, but still.

โ€œDo you know why Iโ€™m not using you?โ€ I said.

โ€œThis should be good,โ€ Celia said as she took a sip of her shake. I laughed, surprised by both the world-weariness in her voice and the speed with which she spoke.

Celia would go on to win more Oscars than anybody else in our circle back then. And it was always for intense, dramatic roles. But I always thought sheโ€™d be dynamite in a comedy. She was so quick.

โ€œThe reason Iโ€™m not using you is that you have nothing to offer me. Not yet, at least.โ€

Celia took a sip of her shake again, stung. And then I leaned forward and took a sip of mine.

โ€œI donโ€™t think thatโ€™s true,โ€ Celia said. โ€œIโ€™ll give you that youโ€™re more famous than me. Being married to Captain Hollywood can have that effect on a person. But other than that, weโ€™re at the same place, Evelyn. Youโ€™ve turned in a couple of good performances. So have I. And now weโ€™re in a movie together, which both of us took on because we want an Academy Award. And letโ€™s be honest, I have a leg up on you in that regard.โ€

โ€œAnd why is that?โ€

โ€œBecause Iโ€™m a better actress.โ€

I stopped sipping the thick shake through the straw and turned myself toward her.

โ€œHow do you figure that?โ€

Celia shrugged. โ€œItโ€™s not something we can measure, I suppose. But itโ€™s true. Iโ€™ve seen One More Day. Youโ€™re really good. But Iโ€™m better. And you know Iโ€™m better. Thatโ€™s why you and Don almost had me kicked off the project.โ€

โ€œNo, we didnโ€™t.โ€

โ€œYes, you did. Ruby told me.โ€

I wasnโ€™t mad at Ruby for telling Celia what Iโ€™d told her, the same way youโ€™re not mad at a dog for barking at a mailman. Thatโ€™s just what they do.

โ€œOh, fine. So youโ€™re a better actress than me. And sure, maybe Don and I discussed getting you fired. So what? Big deal.โ€

โ€œWell, thatโ€™s just my point exactly. Iโ€™m more talented than you, and youโ€™re more powerful than me.โ€

โ€œSo?โ€

โ€œSo youโ€™re right, Iโ€™m not very good at using people. So Iโ€™m trying this a different way. Letโ€™s help each other out.โ€

I sipped my milk shake again, mildly intrigued. โ€œHow so?โ€ I said.

โ€œAfter hours, Iโ€™ll help you with your scenes. Iโ€™ll teach you what I know.โ€

โ€œAnd I go with you to Schwabโ€™s?โ€

โ€œYou help me do what youโ€™ve done. Become a star.โ€

โ€œBut then what?โ€ I said. โ€œWe both end up famous and talented? Competing for every job in town?โ€

โ€œI
