โThey have better ice cream,โ I said as we walked in.
I was putting her in her place. I wasnโt going to be photographed with her unless I wanted to be, unless it was my idea. I certainly wasnโt going to be pushed around by somebody less famous than I was.
Celia nodded, feeling the sting.
The two of us sat down, and the guy behind the counter came up to us, momentarily speechless
โUh . . .โ he said. โDo you want menus?โ
I shook my head. โI know what I want. Celia?โ
She looked at him. โChocolate malt, please.โ
I watched the way his eyes fixed on her, the way she bent forward slightly with her arms together, emphasizing her chest. She seemed unaware of what she was doing, and that mesmerized him even more.
โAnd Iโll have a strawberry milk shake,โ I said.
When he looked at me, I saw his eyes open wider, as if he wanted to see as much of me as he could at one time.
โAre you . . . Evelyn Hugo?โ
โNo,โ I said, and then I smiled and looked him right in the eye. It was ironic and teasing, with the same tone and inflection Iโd used countless times when I was recognized around town.
He scattered away.
โCheer up, buttercup,โ I said as I looked at Celia. She was staring down at the glossy counter. โYouโre getting a better milk shake out of the deal.โ
โI upset you,โ she said. โWith the Schwabโs thing. Iโm sorry.โ
โCelia, if youโre going to be as big as you clearly want to be, you need to learn two things.โ
โAnd what are they?โ
โFirst, you have to push peopleโs boundaries and not feel bad about it. No one is going to give you anything if you donโt ask for it. You tried. You were told no. Get over it.โ
โAnd the second thing?โ
โWhen you use people, be good at it.โ
โI wasnโt trying to use youโโ
โYes, Celia, you were. And Iโm fine with that. I wouldnโt have a momentโs hesitation in using you. And I wouldnโt expect you to have a second thought about using me. Do you know the difference between the two of us?โ
โThere are a lot of differences between the two of us.โ
โDo you know the one in particular Iโm talking about?โ I said.
โWhat is it?โ
โThat I know I use people. Iโm fine with the idea of using people. And all of that energy that you spend trying to convince yourself that youโre not using people I spend getting better at it.โ
โAnd youโre proud of that?โ
โIโm proud of where itโs gotten me.โ
โAre you using me? Now?โ
โIf I was, youโd never know.โ
