The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

โ€œThey have better ice cream,โ€ I said as we walked in.

I was putting her in her place. I wasnโ€™t going to be photographed with her unless I wanted to be, unless it was my idea. I certainly wasnโ€™t going to be pushed around by somebody less famous than I was.

Celia nodded, feeling the sting.

The two of us sat down, and the guy behind the counter came up to us, momentarily speechless

โ€œUh . . .โ€ he said. โ€œDo you want menus?โ€

I shook my head. โ€œI know what I want. Celia?โ€

She looked at him. โ€œChocolate malt, please.โ€

I watched the way his eyes fixed on her, the way she bent forward slightly with her arms together, emphasizing her chest. She seemed unaware of what she was doing, and that mesmerized him even more.

โ€œAnd Iโ€™ll have a strawberry milk shake,โ€ I said.

When he looked at me, I saw his eyes open wider, as if he wanted to see as much of me as he could at one time.

โ€œAre you . . . Evelyn Hugo?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I said, and then I smiled and looked him right in the eye. It was ironic and teasing, with the same tone and inflection Iโ€™d used countless times when I was recognized around town.

He scattered away.

โ€œCheer up, buttercup,โ€ I said as I looked at Celia. She was staring down at the glossy counter. โ€œYouโ€™re getting a better milk shake out of the deal.โ€

โ€œI upset you,โ€ she said. โ€œWith the Schwabโ€™s thing. Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

โ€œCelia, if youโ€™re going to be as big as you clearly want to be, you need to learn two things.โ€

โ€œAnd what are they?โ€

โ€œFirst, you have to push peopleโ€™s boundaries and not feel bad about it. No one is going to give you anything if you donโ€™t ask for it. You tried. You were told no. Get over it.โ€

โ€œAnd the second thing?โ€

โ€œWhen you use people, be good at it.โ€

โ€œI wasnโ€™t trying to use youโ€”โ€

โ€œYes, Celia, you were. And Iโ€™m fine with that. I wouldnโ€™t have a momentโ€™s hesitation in using you. And I wouldnโ€™t expect you to have a second thought about using me. Do you know the difference between the two of us?โ€

โ€œThere are a lot of differences between the two of us.โ€

โ€œDo you know the one in particular Iโ€™m talking about?โ€ I said.

โ€œWhat is it?โ€

โ€œThat I know I use people. Iโ€™m fine with the idea of using people. And all of that energy that you spend trying to convince yourself that youโ€™re not using people I spend getting better at it.โ€

โ€œAnd youโ€™re proud of that?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m proud of where itโ€™s gotten me.โ€

โ€œAre you using me? Now?โ€

โ€œIf I was, youโ€™d never know.โ€
