Chapter no 45 – Paedyn

Powerless (The Powerless Trilogy, #1)

The gardens are quiet at night. Only the chorus of chirping

crickets and the soft howl of the wind follow me as I make my way to the familiar willow bordering the open lawn where the last ball took place.

Iโ€™ve come here often since that night, finding comfort in the shelter of the shadowy willow when I canโ€™t sleep. Iโ€™ve grown used to sitting under there for hours, simply allowing myself time to think.

Brushing aside the low-hanging branches, I step underneath the canopy of leaves. I sigh, suddenly feeling more settled as I breathe in the warm night air.

But the peace I feel is short-lived when a shadow shifts beside the trunk.

I whirl, my fingers flying towards the dagger at my thigh only to be caught by a rough hand. โ€œEasy, Gray, itโ€™s just me.โ€

I blink through the darkness as my eyes adjust to the dim light, landing on the amused gray ones before me. โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€ I sputter.

โ€œI could ask you the same question.โ€ โ€œAnd I could have stabbed you!โ€

Kaiโ€™s brows raise. โ€œSo youโ€™re not going to try? Iโ€™d say thatโ€™s progress.โ€ โ€œOh, but I should for you scaring me like that.โ€

He lets go of my hand slowly, studying me all the while. โ€œI scaredย you?

Youโ€™re the one who crept up on me.โ€

โ€œWell, I didnโ€™t exactly know you would be here,โ€ I whisper harshly.

โ€œClearly,โ€ he says with a smirk twisting his lips. โ€œBut youโ€™re more than welcome to stay.โ€ And then he settles himself onto the ground, looking rather comfortable with his arm tucked behind his head.

I stare at him. โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€

โ€œWaiting for you to get down here and join me.โ€

I stand there, watching the slow smile spread across his face.

โ€œIs it the dress?โ€ he asks as he sits up and begins shrugging off his suit coat. When itโ€™s slid off his shoulders, he lays it on the ground beside him. โ€œThere, now you wonโ€™t get all dirty.โ€

I look down at the simple silk dress I slipped on for our dinner with the king and queen. Itโ€™s rather comfortable, and I was far too lazy to take it off before making my way out here. Kai must have felt similarly since heโ€™s still wearing his fine attire.

But my hesitance to join him has nothing to do with dirtying my dress and everything to do with the fact that I shouldnโ€™t stay here. What I should do is turn, wish him goodnight, and head back to my room without another word. And yet, my feet make no move to carry me away from him.

He pats the coat expectantly, and the sight has a choked laugh slipping past my lips. โ€œHow very gentlemanly of you, but that coat is not nearly big enough to save my dress from getting dirty.โ€

โ€œI can take off my shirt and lay that down for you as well if you like,โ€ he says casually.

โ€œOn second thought,โ€ I mutter, โ€œthe coat will suffice.โ€ He chuckles and Iโ€™m suddenly walking towards him, ignoring my screaming thoughts that tell me to do otherwise. I sit and slowly lay down beside him, our shoulders brushing. We are quiet for a long moment, both of us content to stare up at the drooping canopy of leaves above while listening to the crickets chirping beside us.

Iโ€™m almost reluctant to break the comfortable quiet, but I ask softly, โ€œWhy are you here?โ€

He almost laughs. โ€œIโ€™ve been coming here since I was a boy. In fact, I fell out of this very tree after Kitt dared me to climb it. Broke my arm, too

โ€”โ€

A bubble of laughter slips past my lips, cutting him off. โ€œAre you laughing at me, Gray?โ€ Heโ€™s trying to fight his own smile as he adds, โ€œIโ€™m glad you find my pain so amusing.โ€

I clear my throat, trying to compose myself. โ€œSo, what, you come here to reminisce on the fond memory?โ€

โ€œSomething like that.โ€ He sighs. โ€œI come here to think, to cool off. Iโ€™ve always liked the quiet out here. The escape from the palace.โ€ He glances over at me before asking, โ€œSo why are you here?โ€

I smile slightly and echo his words. โ€œTo think. I like the quiet. The escape.โ€

I see his lips twitch out of the corner of my eye, and we are quiet for a moment before I ask, โ€œIs there a reason you dragged me down onto the dirt?โ€

I look over at his shadowy profile as he stares at the branches above us. โ€œTo talk. To lay here in silence.โ€ He shrugs lazily. โ€œIt doesnโ€™t really matter.โ€

I look away from him. โ€œSo, you just want someone to keep you company?โ€

โ€œNot someone. You.โ€

I can feel his eyes on me, but I donโ€™t turn to look at him. โ€œDo you want quiet company or talking company?โ€

He makes a sound that might have been a laugh. โ€œOnly you would ask me my preference on your company.โ€

I finally turn my head to meet his gaze. โ€œThat wasnโ€™t an answer.โ€

Heโ€™s quiet for a long moment, seeming to study my face, search my eyes. โ€œTalk to me.โ€

I stare at him, my voice suddenly very quiet when I finally ask, โ€œAbout what?โ€

I watch a faint smile curve his lips. โ€œAnything. Everything. What youโ€™re thinking at this very moment, darling.โ€

I almost laugh. โ€œWell, Iโ€™m currently thinking that this coat Iโ€™m lying on is far too itchy for a prince to wear.โ€ He chuckles while I add, โ€œAnd Iโ€™m also wondering how many bones you and Kitt broke.โ€

โ€œToo many,โ€ Kai sighs, shaking his head. โ€œIt was mostly me with the broken bones and injuries, though not all of them were due to Kittโ€™s brilliant ideas.โ€ He pauses. โ€œMost were from my training. Especially when I was learning to use a Healerโ€™s ability.โ€

When his words sink in, I stiffen. โ€œYou donโ€™t mean…โ€ I trial off before trying again. โ€œYou didnโ€™t have toโ€”โ€

โ€œYes, I did,โ€ he says simply, looking me right in the eyes. โ€œI had to break my bones and then heal them. Or sometimes Iโ€™d be sliced open with a

sword and have to learn how to stitch my own skin back together.โ€

He says this so casually that I canโ€™t even begin to imagine the horrors he has been forced through. โ€œHow do you not hate him?โ€ I whisper.

Silence stretches between us.

The small smile he wears is sad. โ€œBecause he made me strong.โ€

He says this far too calmly, and I want to shake him of his cool composure. It doesnโ€™t matter howย strongย the king made him. The prince before me has been nothing but a pawn created by the man he calls Father. The thought makes me sick, makes me want to scream.

And yet, I understand.

His words strike me, hitting home. Our lives seem to share sad similarities, unfortunate fates. Both our childhoods consisted of training to become what we had to be, neither of us growing up the way we wished. Except, the fathers who raised us couldnโ€™t be more differentโ€”one doing everything out of love, the other out of greed.

People arenโ€™t born strong; theyโ€™re made that way. And the prince and I know that better than most.

Kai continues casually as though his words didnโ€™t just knock the air from my lungs. โ€œWell, Kitt and I suffered several injuries for our stupidity, but not all of our games were dangerous. In fact, because our favorite activities as boys likely consisted of some sort of violence, my tutor would make us sit and play games she consideredย safe.โ€ He heaves a sigh. โ€œWe considered them boring.โ€

โ€œOh really?โ€ I huff out a laugh. โ€œWhat games?โ€

โ€œWell,โ€ he reaches out a hand to take hold of mine, โ€œMadame Plattโ€™s personal favorite to torture us with was thumb wars. Though, weโ€™d still find a way to make even those violent.โ€

โ€œThumb wars?โ€ My brows crinkle in confusion. โ€œThat has the wordย war

in it, and itโ€™s still considered safe?โ€

Iโ€™ve never seen Kai look so bewildered before, and I nearly laugh again. โ€œYouโ€™ve never heard of a thumb war?โ€

His own thumb strokes over my knuckles, forcing me to focus on my next words. โ€œWell, in the slums, the only game I tended to play was trying to guess how many coins were in someoneโ€™s pocket before I stole them.โ€

The corner of his mouth kicks upward. โ€œAnd did you play that game before you robbed me?โ€

โ€œNo, but I would have lost if I had,โ€ I huff. โ€œYou had far more silvers than Iโ€™d ever seen in one place.โ€

โ€œWell, only until you stole half of them.โ€

I smile at that, and he watches me quietly for a moment. When my eyes drop to where heโ€™s still holding my hand and distracting me with that thumb still sliding over my knuckles, he clears his throat and finally says, โ€œWell, the game Iโ€™m going to teach you isnโ€™t nearly as fun as yours, Iโ€™m sure.โ€ Then he shakes his head at me, muttering under his breath, โ€œI cannot believe you donโ€™t know what a thumb war is.โ€

โ€œWell, from the way you talk about it, it doesnโ€™t seem like Iโ€™m missing out on much.โ€

โ€œVery fair point.โ€ His lips twitch into a smirk. โ€œAnd thatโ€™s exactly why Iโ€™m going to teach it to you, so we can suffer together.โ€ He twists onto his side and props himself up on an elbow, watching as I do the same. โ€œThe rules of thisย veryย riveting game are simple.โ€ He curls our fingers together as I watch. Then he chuckles and reaches out with his other hand to pull my thumb into the air. โ€œNow, you win by pinning the other personโ€™s thumb down, but you have to keep your hand and arm still.โ€ He peeks up at me and asks, โ€œUnderstand?โ€

I frown at our joined hands. โ€œIโ€™m starting to understand why you find this game so boring.โ€

He laughs before muttering, โ€œGo.โ€

I donโ€™t even have time to react before his thumb is crushing mine, pinning it to my hand. When he looks up at me, his smile is smug. โ€œI really thought your reflexes would be quicker than that, Gray.โ€

โ€œI wasnโ€™t ready, Azer.โ€

โ€œWell, thatโ€™s kind of the whole point ofย reflexes.โ€

I halfheartedly roll my eyes at him. โ€œYouโ€™re insufferable.โ€

โ€œAnd yet, youโ€™re still here,โ€ he says softly, his eyes bright even in the dim light as they flick between mine.

We are quiet for a moment as I assess how to beat him at this game. Per usual, distraction seems to be the best option, so I say, โ€œTell me something I donโ€™t know about you.โ€

He only seems slightly surprised by my random request, but it only takes him a moment to answer. โ€œBlueberries. I donโ€™t like them.โ€

I choke back my laugh. โ€œYou donโ€™t like blueberries?โ€

โ€œNo, I take it back.โ€ He pauses, seeming to consider something. โ€œI hate blueberries.โ€

โ€œIs there a reason for this loathing?โ€

โ€œHave you tasted them?โ€ he asks, and I nod in answer. โ€œThen, there.

Thatโ€™s my reason. Theyโ€™re disgusting.โ€

I huff out a laugh, and when he opens his mouth to say something, I cut him off with a quiet, โ€œGo.โ€

My thumb lands on his and Iโ€™m about to brag my victory when he easily slips it out from beneath mine. And then, once again, he has my thumb pinned. โ€œAdorable effort to distract me, darling.โ€

I sigh in frustration. โ€œI see why you hate this game.โ€

โ€œNo, I hate this game because itโ€™s boring. You hate this game because youโ€™re bad at it.โ€

I glare at him, and he grins at me. His thumb sweeps down the length of mine, and I refuse to tear my eyes from his. โ€œNow,โ€ he says slowly, โ€œtell me something I donโ€™t know about you.โ€

โ€œEasy.โ€ I give him a bright smile. โ€œIย loveย blueberries.โ€ Kai groans. โ€œOf course you do.โ€

โ€œThey are justย delicious. I mean, talk about the perfect blend of tart and sweet andโ€”โ€

โ€œI am never going to hear the end of this, am I?โ€

โ€œโ€”honestly, I think they might be the best fruit out there. I could easily eat them with every meal andโ€”โ€

Kai leans closer and sighs out an exasperated, โ€œPaedyn.โ€ I clamp my mouth shut at the sound of my name. โ€œI am content to listen to you talk for hours, but if you must speak about fruit, then at least pick one we both enjoy.โ€

I press my lips together to smother my smile. The future Enforcer is willing to listen to me ramble aboutย fruit. The thought has me on the verge of both bursting out in laughter and blushing from head to toe.

โ€œFair enough,โ€ I say simply. โ€œHow about oranges?โ€ He makes a face. โ€œI donโ€™t like pulp.โ€

โ€œFine. Bananas?โ€ โ€œI hate the texture.โ€

โ€œIs there any fruit youย doย like?โ€ I huff, shaking my head at him. โ€œYou are the pickiest prince I know.โ€

โ€œI am one of the two princes you know, and trust me, Kitt is not much better than I am.โ€

I give him a pointed look. โ€œIโ€™m still waiting to hear a fruit you donโ€™t find repulsive.โ€

Heโ€™s quiet for a moment, pondering his answer while his thumb runs idly over my own. โ€œStrawberries.โ€

I blink at him. โ€œI love strawberries.โ€

A slow smile tips up his lips. โ€œAnd I find them not repulsive.โ€ โ€œGood.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€

โ€œGo.โ€

The word tumbles from my mouth, and I take advantage of his surprise. Determination drives me as I fight to pin his thumb down, moving my hand and arm in the process. I nearly fall on top of him to finally get my thumb to land on his, though Iโ€™ve broken the rules to do it.

And then Iโ€™m suddenly being tugged fully against his body.

He yanks on my arm, pulling me close enough to count the dark lashes surrounding his eyes. โ€œYou cheated, Gray.โ€

โ€œI did what I had to do to win, Azer.โ€

โ€œHmm,โ€ he hums, and I feel it vibrate through his chest. โ€œI suppose itโ€™s my fault for forgetting what a vicious, little thing you are.โ€

โ€œWell, Iโ€”โ€

The words die in my throat when he uncurls his hand from mine and trails his fingers down my arm. I suppress a shiver at his sudden touch, but the smile that lifts his lips tells me it didnโ€™t go unnoticed.

โ€œI take it back,โ€ he says softly. โ€œThis game isnโ€™t boring in the least bit when I play it with you.โ€ His gaze has dropped to the fingers gliding over my arm, and I still under his gentle touch.

Iโ€™m not sure how long we stay like that, listening to the wind rustling the leaves above us as we study one another. And itโ€™s only when his fingers trail up my neck to tuck a stray piece of hair behind my ear that I finally come to my senses.

โ€œI should go.โ€

The unsure words hang between us, barely more than a whisper that the wind nearly steals away.

โ€œThat doesnโ€™t sound like what you want to do at all,โ€ he murmurs.

I refuse to even puzzle out what it is that Iย wantย to do, so I say instead, โ€œOne of these days, Iโ€™m going to beat you fairly in a thumb war, and then you wonโ€™t find it so fun.โ€

He chuckles softly, followed by an equally soft murmur. โ€œItโ€™s not the winning I find fun. Itโ€™s you, darling.โ€

After a moment too long, I pull myself out of his hold and sit up slowly. The night has grown colder, and without the heat of Kaiโ€™s body next to mine, my thin dress does little to keep me warm.

Kai sits up beside me and wraps his jacket around my shoulders. โ€œYouโ€™re right. That coat is far too itchy for a prince to wear.โ€ Then his lips twitch into a smirk. โ€œSo, Iโ€™ll let you wear it instead.โ€
