Another scream on top of mineโa shriek like a chainsaw cutting
through rebar.
The hunter lunged, but her teeth snapped closed an inch from my face as something yanked her back, flung her out of my sight.
The fire pooled in the crease of my elbow, and I screamed.
I wasnโt alone, there were others screamingโthe metallic snarl was joined by a high keening that bounced off the walls and then cut off suddenly. A thrumming growl was grinding underneath the other sounds.
More metal tearing, shreddingโฆ
โNo!โ someone howled in an agony to match mine. โNo, no, no, no!โ
This voice meant something to me, even through the burning that was so much more than that. Though the flames had reached my shoulder, this voice still claimed my attention. Even screaming, she sounded like an angel.
โBeau, please,โ Edythe sobbed. โPlease, please, please, Beau, please!โ
I tried to answer, but my mouth was disconnected from the rest of me.
My screams were gone, but only because there was no more air.
โCarine!โ Edythe shrieked. โHelp me!ย Beau, please, please, Beau, please!โ
She was cradling my head in her lap, and her fingers were pressing hard against my scalp. Her face was unfocused, just like the hunterโs. I was falling down a tunnel in my head. The fire was coming with me, though, just as sharp as before.
Something cool blew into my mouth, filling my lungs. My lungs pushed back. Another cool breath.
Edythe came into focus, her perfect face twisted and tortured. โKeep breathing, Beau. Breathe.โ
She put her lips against mine and filled my lungs again.
There was gold around the edges of my visionโanother set of cold hands.
โArchie, make splints for his leg and arm. Edythe, straighten out his airways. Which is the worst bleed?โ
โHere, Carine.โ
I stared at her face while the pressure against my head eased. My screams were just a broken whimper now. The pain wasnโt any lessโit was worse. But the screaming didnโt help me, and it did hurt Edythe. As long as I kept my eyes on her face, I could remember something beyond the burning.
โMy bag, please. Hold your breath, Archie, it will help. Thank you, Eleanor, now leave, please. Heโs lost blood, but the wounds arenโt too deep. I think his ribs are the biggest problem now. Find me tape.โ
โSomething for the pain,โ Edythe hissed. โThereโI donโt have hands. Will you?โ โThis will make it better,โ Edythe promised.
Someone was straightening my leg. Edythe was holding her breath, waiting, I think, for me to react. But it didnโt hurt like my arm.
โEdytheโโ
โShhh, Beau, itโs going to be okay. I swear, itโs going to be fine.โ โEโitโsโnotโโ
Something was digging into my scalp and something else was yanking tight against my broken arm. This tweaked my ribs, and I lost my breath.
โHold on, Beau,โ Edythe begged. โPleaseย just hold on.โ I labored to pull in another breath.
โNotโribs,โ I choked. โHand.โ
โCan you understand him?โ Carineโs voice was right next to my head. โJust rest, Beau. Breathe.โ
โNoโhand,โ I gasped out. โEdytheโright hand!โ
I couldnโt feel her cold hands on my skinโthe fire was too hot. But I heard her gasp.
โNo!โ
โEdythe?โ Carine asked, startled.
โShe bit him.โ Edytheโs voice had no volume, like sheโd run out of air, too.
Carine caught her breath in horror.
โWhat do I do, Carine?โ Edythe demanded.
No one answered her. The tugging continued on my scalp, but it didnโt hurt.
โYes,โ Edythe said through her teeth. โI can try. Archieโscalpel.โ โThereโs a good chance youโll kill him yourself,โ Archie said. โGive it to me,โ she snapped. โI can do this.โ
I didnโt see what she did with the scalpel. I couldnโt feel anything else in my body anymoreโnothing but the fire in my arm. But I watched her raise my hand to her mouth, like the hunter had. Fresh blood was welling from the wound. She put her lips over it.
I screamed again, I couldnโt help it. It was like she was pulling the fire back down my arm.
โEdythe,โ Archie said.
She didnโt react, her lips still pressed to my hand. The fire warred up and down my arm, sawing back and forth. Moans escaped through my clenched teeth.
โEdythe,โ Archie shouted.ย โLook.โ
โWhat is it, Archie?โ Carine asked.
Archieโs hand shot out and slapped Edytheโs cheek. โStop it, Edythe! Stop it now!โ
My hand dropped away from her face. She looked at Archie with her eyes so wide they seemed like half her face. She gasped.
โArchie!โ Carine barked.
โItโs too late,โ Archie said. โWe got here too late.โ โYou can see it?โ Carine said in a more subdued voice.
โThere are only two futures left, Carine. He survives as one of us, or Edythe kills him trying to stop it from happening.โ
โNo,โ Edythe moaned.
Carine was quiet. The tugging against my scalp slowed.
Edythe dropped her face to mine. She kissed my eyelids, my cheeks, my lips. โIโm sorry, Iโm so sorry.โ
โIt doesnโt need to be this slow,โ Archie complained. โCarine?โ โI made an oath, Archie.โ
โIย didnโt,โ he snarled.
โWait, wait,โ Edythe said, her head snapping up. โHe deserves a choice.โ
Her lips were at my ear. I clamped my teeth against the moaning, straining to listen.
โBeau? I wonโt make this decision for you. I wonโt take this away from you. And Iโll understand, I promise, Beau. If you donโt want to live like this, I wonโt fight you. Iโll respect what you want. I know itโs a horrible choice. I would give you any other option if I could. I would die if I could give your life back to you.โ Her voice broke. โBut I canโt make that trade. I canโt doย anythingโexcept stop the pain. If thatโs what you want. You donโt have to beย this. I can let you goโif thatโs what you need.โ It sounded like she was sobbing again. โTell me what you want, Beau. Anything.โ
โYou,โ I spit through my teeth. โJust you.โ โAre youย sure?โ she whispered.
I groaned. The fire was reaching its fingers into my chest. โYes,โ I coughed out. โJustโlet me stayโwith you.โ
โOut of my way, Edythe,โ Archie growled.
Her voice lashed back like a whip. โI didnโt make any oaths, either.โ
Her face was at my throat, and I couldnโt feel anything besides the fire, but I could hear the quiet sound of her teeth cutting through my skin.
