Chapter no 23 – THE CHOICE

Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined (The Twilight Saga)

Another scream on top of mineโ€”a shriek like a chainsaw cutting

through rebar.

The hunter lunged, but her teeth snapped closed an inch from my face as something yanked her back, flung her out of my sight.

The fire pooled in the crease of my elbow, and I screamed.

I wasnโ€™t alone, there were others screamingโ€”the metallic snarl was joined by a high keening that bounced off the walls and then cut off suddenly. A thrumming growl was grinding underneath the other sounds.

More metal tearing, shreddingโ€ฆ

โ€œNo!โ€ someone howled in an agony to match mine. โ€œNo, no, no, no!โ€

This voice meant something to me, even through the burning that was so much more than that. Though the flames had reached my shoulder, this voice still claimed my attention. Even screaming, she sounded like an angel.

โ€œBeau, please,โ€ Edythe sobbed. โ€œPlease, please, please, Beau, please!โ€

I tried to answer, but my mouth was disconnected from the rest of me.

My screams were gone, but only because there was no more air.

โ€œCarine!โ€ Edythe shrieked. โ€œHelp me!ย Beau, please, please, Beau, please!โ€

She was cradling my head in her lap, and her fingers were pressing hard against my scalp. Her face was unfocused, just like the hunterโ€™s. I was falling down a tunnel in my head. The fire was coming with me, though, just as sharp as before.

Something cool blew into my mouth, filling my lungs. My lungs pushed back. Another cool breath.

Edythe came into focus, her perfect face twisted and tortured. โ€œKeep breathing, Beau. Breathe.โ€

She put her lips against mine and filled my lungs again.

There was gold around the edges of my visionโ€”another set of cold hands.

โ€œArchie, make splints for his leg and arm. Edythe, straighten out his airways. Which is the worst bleed?โ€

โ€œHere, Carine.โ€

I stared at her face while the pressure against my head eased. My screams were just a broken whimper now. The pain wasnโ€™t any lessโ€”it was worse. But the screaming didnโ€™t help me, and it did hurt Edythe. As long as I kept my eyes on her face, I could remember something beyond the burning.

โ€œMy bag, please. Hold your breath, Archie, it will help. Thank you, Eleanor, now leave, please. Heโ€™s lost blood, but the wounds arenโ€™t too deep. I think his ribs are the biggest problem now. Find me tape.โ€

โ€œSomething for the pain,โ€ Edythe hissed. โ€œThereโ€”I donโ€™t have hands. Will you?โ€ โ€œThis will make it better,โ€ Edythe promised.

Someone was straightening my leg. Edythe was holding her breath, waiting, I think, for me to react. But it didnโ€™t hurt like my arm.

โ€œEdytheโ€”โ€

โ€œShhh, Beau, itโ€™s going to be okay. I swear, itโ€™s going to be fine.โ€ โ€œEโ€”itโ€™sโ€”notโ€”โ€

Something was digging into my scalp and something else was yanking tight against my broken arm. This tweaked my ribs, and I lost my breath.

โ€œHold on, Beau,โ€ Edythe begged. โ€œPleaseย just hold on.โ€ I labored to pull in another breath.

โ€œNotโ€”ribs,โ€ I choked. โ€œHand.โ€

โ€œCan you understand him?โ€ Carineโ€™s voice was right next to my head. โ€œJust rest, Beau. Breathe.โ€

โ€œNoโ€”hand,โ€ I gasped out. โ€œEdytheโ€”right hand!โ€

I couldnโ€™t feel her cold hands on my skinโ€”the fire was too hot. But I heard her gasp.

โ€œNo!โ€

โ€œEdythe?โ€ Carine asked, startled.

โ€œShe bit him.โ€ Edytheโ€™s voice had no volume, like sheโ€™d run out of air, too.

Carine caught her breath in horror.

โ€œWhat do I do, Carine?โ€ Edythe demanded.

No one answered her. The tugging continued on my scalp, but it didnโ€™t hurt.

โ€œYes,โ€ Edythe said through her teeth. โ€œI can try. Archieโ€”scalpel.โ€ โ€œThereโ€™s a good chance youโ€™ll kill him yourself,โ€ Archie said. โ€œGive it to me,โ€ she snapped. โ€œI can do this.โ€

I didnโ€™t see what she did with the scalpel. I couldnโ€™t feel anything else in my body anymoreโ€”nothing but the fire in my arm. But I watched her raise my hand to her mouth, like the hunter had. Fresh blood was welling from the wound. She put her lips over it.

I screamed again, I couldnโ€™t help it. It was like she was pulling the fire back down my arm.

โ€œEdythe,โ€ Archie said.

She didnโ€™t react, her lips still pressed to my hand. The fire warred up and down my arm, sawing back and forth. Moans escaped through my clenched teeth.

โ€œEdythe,โ€ Archie shouted.ย โ€œLook.โ€

โ€œWhat is it, Archie?โ€ Carine asked.

Archieโ€™s hand shot out and slapped Edytheโ€™s cheek. โ€œStop it, Edythe! Stop it now!โ€

My hand dropped away from her face. She looked at Archie with her eyes so wide they seemed like half her face. She gasped.

โ€œArchie!โ€ Carine barked.

โ€œItโ€™s too late,โ€ Archie said. โ€œWe got here too late.โ€ โ€œYou can see it?โ€ Carine said in a more subdued voice.

โ€œThere are only two futures left, Carine. He survives as one of us, or Edythe kills him trying to stop it from happening.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Edythe moaned.

Carine was quiet. The tugging against my scalp slowed.

Edythe dropped her face to mine. She kissed my eyelids, my cheeks, my lips. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Iโ€™m so sorry.โ€

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t need to be this slow,โ€ Archie complained. โ€œCarine?โ€ โ€œI made an oath, Archie.โ€

โ€œIย didnโ€™t,โ€ he snarled.

โ€œWait, wait,โ€ Edythe said, her head snapping up. โ€œHe deserves a choice.โ€

Her lips were at my ear. I clamped my teeth against the moaning, straining to listen.

โ€œBeau? I wonโ€™t make this decision for you. I wonโ€™t take this away from you. And Iโ€™ll understand, I promise, Beau. If you donโ€™t want to live like this, I wonโ€™t fight you. Iโ€™ll respect what you want. I know itโ€™s a horrible choice. I would give you any other option if I could. I would die if I could give your life back to you.โ€ Her voice broke. โ€œBut I canโ€™t make that trade. I canโ€™t doย anythingโ€”except stop the pain. If thatโ€™s what you want. You donโ€™t have to beย this. I can let you goโ€”if thatโ€™s what you need.โ€ It sounded like she was sobbing again. โ€œTell me what you want, Beau. Anything.โ€

โ€œYou,โ€ I spit through my teeth. โ€œJust you.โ€ โ€œAre youย sure?โ€ she whispered.

I groaned. The fire was reaching its fingers into my chest. โ€œYes,โ€ I coughed out. โ€œJustโ€”let me stayโ€”with you.โ€

โ€œOut of my way, Edythe,โ€ Archie growled.

Her voice lashed back like a whip. โ€œI didnโ€™t make any oaths, either.โ€

Her face was at my throat, and I couldnโ€™t feel anything besides the fire, but I could hear the quiet sound of her teeth cutting through my skin.
