Chapter no 29 – Juliette Ella

Defy Me (Shatter Me Book 5)

โ€œWhat?โ€

The three of them turn to face me.

โ€œWhat are you talking about?โ€ Kenji says.

โ€œLove, thatโ€™s really not a good ideaโ€” We donโ€™t have any parachutes on this plane, and without themโ€”โ€

โ€œNo, sheโ€™s right,โ€ Nazeera says carefully. Sheโ€™s looking me in the eye. She seems to understand what Iโ€™m thinking.

โ€œItโ€™ll work,โ€ I say. โ€œDonโ€™t you think?โ€

โ€œHonestly, I have no idea,โ€ she says. โ€œBut itโ€™s definitely worth a shot. It might be our only shot.โ€

Kenji is beginning to pace. โ€œOkay, someone needs to tell me what the hell is going on.โ€

Aaron has gone pale. โ€œLove,โ€ he says again, โ€œwhatโ€”โ€

โ€œNazeera can fly,โ€ I explain. โ€œIf we all find a way to secure ourselves to one another, she can use her powers to bolster us, you can use your power to bolsterย herย power, and because thereโ€™s little chance either of you could use that much of your strength while still carrying our combined weight, weโ€™ll eventually, slowly, be dragged down to the ground.โ€

Nazeera glances at the dash again. โ€œWeโ€™re eight thousand feet in the air and losing altitude quickly. If weโ€™re going to do this, we should jump now, while the plane is still relatively stable.โ€

โ€œWaitโ€”where are we?โ€ Kenji says. โ€œWhere are we going to land?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not sure,โ€ she says. โ€œBut it looks like weโ€™re somewhere over the general vicinity of sectors 200 through 300.โ€ She looks at Aaron. โ€œDo you have any friends in this region?โ€

Aaron shoots her a dark look. โ€œI have friends nowhere.โ€ โ€œZero people skills,โ€ Kenji mutters.

โ€œWeโ€™re out of time,โ€ I say. โ€œAre we going to do this?โ€ โ€œI guess so. Itโ€™s the only plan weโ€™ve got,โ€ Kenji says.

โ€œI think itโ€™s a solid plan,โ€ Aaron says, and shoots me a hesitant, but encouraging look. โ€œBut I think we should find a way to strap ourselves together. Some kind of harness or somethingโ€”so we donโ€™t lose each other in

the air.โ€

โ€œWe donโ€™t have time for that.โ€ Nazeeraโ€™s calm is quickly giving way to panic. โ€œWeโ€™ll just have to hold on tight.โ€

Kenji nods, and with a sudden heave, shoves open the airplane door. Air rushes in fast and hard, nearly knocking us off our feet.

Quickly, we all link arms, Nazeera and Aaron holding up the outer edges, and with a few reassuring shouts through the howling windโ€”

We jump.

Itโ€™s a terrifying sensation.

The wind pushes up fast and hard and then, all at once, stills. We seem to be frozen in time, whirring in place even as we watch the jet fall, steadily, into the distance. Nazeera and Aaron appear to be doing their jobs almost too well. Weโ€™re not falling fast enough, and not only is it freezing up here, oxygen is scarce.

โ€œIโ€™m going to drop my hold on your power,โ€ Aaron calls out to Nazeera, and she shouts back her agreement.

Slowly, we begin to descend.

I watch as the world blurs around us. We drift downward, unhurried, the wind pushing hard against our feet. And then, suddenly, the bottom seems to drop out from under us, and we go shooting down, hard, into the terrain below.

I give out a single, terrified screamโ€” Or was that Kenji?

โ€”before we pull to a sudden stop, a foot above the ground. Aaron squeezes my arm and I look at him, grateful for the catch.

And then we fall to the ground.

I land badly on my ankle and wince, but I can put weight on my foot, so I know itโ€™s all right. I look around to assess the state of my friends, but realize, too late, that weโ€™re not alone.

Weโ€™re in a vast, wide-open field. This was, once upon a time, almost certainly farmland, but itโ€™s now been reduced to little more than ash. In the distance appears a thin band of people, quickly closing in on us.

I harness my powers, ready to fight. Ready to face whatever comes our way. Energy is thrumming inside me, sparking in my blood.

I am not afraid.

Aaron puts his arm around me, pulls me close. โ€œTogether,โ€ he whispers. โ€œNo matter what.โ€

Finally, after what feels like immeasurable minutes, two bodies separate from their group. Slowly, they walk up to us.

My whole body is tense in preparation for an attack, but as they get closer, Iโ€™m able to discern their faces.

Theyโ€™re two adults:

One, a slender, stunning woman with closely cropped hair and skin so dark it gleams. Sheโ€™s luminous as she walks, her smile widening with every step. Beside her is another smiling face, but the familiar sight of his brown skin and long dreadlocks sends shock and panic and hope rushing through me. I feel dazed.

Castle.

His presence here could be either good or bad. A thousand questions run through my mind, among them: What is he doing here? How did he get here? The last time I saw him, I didnโ€™t think he was on my side at allโ€”has he turned against us completely?

The woman is the first to speak.

โ€œIโ€™m glad to see youโ€™re all right,โ€ she says. โ€œIโ€™m afraid we had no choice but to shoot your plane out of the sky.โ€

โ€œWhat? What are yโ€”โ€

โ€œCastle?โ€ Kenjiโ€™s quiet, tentative voice reaches out from behind me.

Castle steps forward just as Kenji moves toward him, and the two embrace, Castle pulling him in so tightly I can practically feel the tension from where Iโ€™m standing. Theyโ€™re both visibly emotional, and the moment is so touching it puts my fears at ease.

โ€œYouโ€™re okay,โ€ Kenji says. โ€œI thoughtโ€”โ€

Haider and Stephan, the son of the supreme commander of Africa, step out of the crowd. Shock seizes my body at the sight of them. They nod at Nazeera and the three of them separate to form a new group, off to the side. They speak in low, hurried whispers.

Castle takes a deep breath. โ€œWe have a lot to talk about.โ€ And then, to me, he says, โ€œElla, Iโ€™d like you to meet my daughter, Nouria.โ€

My eyebrows fly up my forehead. I glance at Aaron, who seems as stunned as I am, but Kenji lets out a suddenย whoop, and tackles Castle all over again. The two of them laugh. Kenji is saying,ย No way, no way

Nouria pointedly ignores them and smiles at me. โ€œWe call our home the Sanctuary,โ€ she says. โ€œMy wife and I are the leaders of the resistance here. Welcome.โ€

Another woman separates from the crowd and steps forward. Sheโ€™s petite, with long blond hair. She shakes my hand. โ€œItโ€™s an honor to meet you,โ€ she says. โ€œMy name is Samantha.โ€

I study both of them, Nouria and Samantha standing side by side. Castleโ€™s happiness. The smile on Kenjiโ€™s face. The cluster of Nazeera, Haider, and Stephan off to the side. The larger group crowded in the distance.

โ€œThe honor is ours,โ€ I say, and smile. Then: โ€œBut are we safe out here?

Out in the open like this?โ€

Nouria nods. โ€œMy powers allow me to manipulate light in unusual ways,โ€

she says. โ€œIโ€™ve cast a protective shield around us right now, so that if someone were to look in our direction, theyโ€™d see only a painful brightness that would force them to look away.โ€

โ€œWhoa.โ€ Kenjiโ€™s eyes widen. โ€œThatโ€™s cool.โ€

โ€œThank you,โ€ Nouria says. Sheโ€™s practically emanating light, her dark brown skin shimmering even as she stands still. Thereโ€™s something breathtaking about just being near her.

โ€œAre those your people?โ€ I hear Aaron say, speaking for the first time.

Heโ€™s peering over her head, at the small crowd in the distance.

She nods.

โ€œAnd are they here to make sure we donโ€™t hurt you?โ€

Nouria smiles. โ€œTheyโ€™re here to make sure no one hurtsย you,โ€ she says. โ€œYour group is welcome here. Youโ€™ve more than proven yourselves worthy.โ€ And then, โ€œWeโ€™ve heard all the stories about Sector 45.โ€

โ€œYou have?โ€ I say, surprised. โ€œI thought The Reestablishment buried everything.โ€

Nouria shakes her head. โ€œWhispers travel faster than anyone can control. The continent is buzzing with the news of all youโ€™ve been doing these past couple of months. Itโ€™s truly a privilege to meet you,โ€ she says to me, and holds out her hand. โ€œIโ€™ve been so inspired by your work.โ€

I take her hand, feeling at once proud and embarrassed. โ€œThank you,โ€ I say quietly. โ€œThatโ€™s very kind of you.โ€

But then Nouriaโ€™s eyes grow somber. โ€œIย amย sorry we had to shoot you out of the sky,โ€ she says. โ€œThat mustโ€™ve been terrifying. But Castle assured me that there were two among you who would be able to fly.โ€

โ€œWait, what?โ€ Kenji hazards a look at Castle. โ€œYou planned this?โ€

โ€œIt was the only way,โ€ he says. โ€œOnce we were able to get free of the asylumโ€โ€”he nods gratefully at Nazeeraโ€”โ€œI knew the only place left for us was here, with Nouria. But we couldnโ€™t have radioed to tell you to land here; our communication wouldโ€™ve been intercepted. And we couldnโ€™t have you land at the air base, for obvious reasons. So weโ€™ve been tracking your plane, waiting for the right moment. Shooting you out of the sky punts the problem straight back to the military. Theyโ€™ll think it was action from another unit, and by the time they begin to figure it out, weโ€™ll have destroyed all evidence of our being here.โ€

โ€œSoโ€” Waitโ€”โ€ I say. โ€œHow did you and Nouria coordinate this? Howโ€™d you find each other?โ€ And then: โ€œCastle, if youโ€™ve abandoned the citizensโ€” Wonโ€™t Anderson just murder them all? Shouldnโ€™t you have stayed to protect them? Tried to fight back?โ€

He shakes his head. โ€œWe had no choice but to evacuate Omega Point members from Sector 45. After the two of youโ€โ€”he nods at me and Aaron

โ€”โ€œwere taken, things fell into complete chaos. We were all taken hostage and

thrown in prison. It was only because of Nazeeraโ€”who connected us with Haider and Stephanโ€”that we were able to make our way here. Sector 45 has since been returned to its original state as a prison.โ€ Castle takes a tight breath. โ€œThereโ€™s a great deal we need to share with each other. So much has happened in the last two weeks itโ€™ll be impossible to discuss it all quickly. But itย isย important that you know, right now, a little bit about Nouriaโ€™s role in all this.โ€

He turns to Nouria and gives her a small nod.

Nouria looks me in the eye and says, โ€œThat day you were shot on the beach,โ€ she says quietly. โ€œDo you remember?โ€

I hesitate. โ€œOf course.โ€

โ€œI was the one who issued that order against you.โ€ Iโ€™m so stunned I visibly flinch.

โ€œWhat?โ€ Aaron steps forward, outraged. โ€œCastle, are youย insane? You ask us to take refuge in the home of a person who nearly murdered Ella?โ€ He turns back, stares at me with a wild look in his eyes. โ€œHow could yโ€”โ€

โ€œCastle?โ€ Thereโ€™s a warning in Kenjiโ€™s voice. โ€œWhat is going on?โ€

But Nouria and Castle are staring at each other, and a heavy look passes between them.

Finally, Castle sighs.

โ€œLetโ€™s get settled before we keep talking,โ€ he says. โ€œThis is a long conversation, and itโ€™s an important one.โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s have it now,โ€ Aaron says. โ€œYes,โ€ Kenji says angrily. โ€œNow.โ€

โ€œShe tried to murder me,โ€ I say, finally finding my voice. โ€œWhy would you bring me here? What are you trying to do?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve had a long, difficult journey,โ€ Castle says. โ€œI want you to have a chance to get settled. Take a shower and eat some food. And then, I promise

โ€”weโ€™ll give you all the answers you want.โ€

โ€œBut how can we trust that weโ€™ll be safe?โ€ I say. โ€œHow can we know Nouria isnโ€™t trying to hurt us?โ€

โ€œBecause,โ€ she says steadily, โ€œI did what I did to help you.โ€ โ€œAnd how is that plausible?โ€ Aaron says sharply.

โ€œIt was the only way I knew how to get a message to you,โ€ Nouria says, still staring at me. โ€œI was never trying to kill youโ€”and I knew that your own defenses would help protect you from certain death.โ€

โ€œThat was a dangerous bet to make.โ€

โ€œBelieve me,โ€ she says quietly, โ€œit was a difficult decision to make. It came at great cost to usโ€”we lost one of our own in the process.โ€

I feel myself tense, but otherwise betray no emotion. I remember the day Nazeera saved meโ€”the day she killed my assailant.

โ€œBut I had to reach you,โ€ Nouria says, her dark brown eyes deep with

feeling. โ€œIt was the only way I could do it without rousing suspicion.โ€ My curiosity beats out my skepticism. For the moment.

โ€œSoโ€” Why? Why did you do it?โ€ I ask. โ€œWhy poison me?โ€

Unexpectedly, Nouria smiles. โ€œI needed you to see what I saw. And according to Castle, it worked.โ€

โ€œWhat worked?โ€

โ€œEllaโ€”โ€ She hesitates. โ€œMay I call you by your real name?โ€ I blink. Stare at Castle. โ€œYou told her about me?โ€

โ€œHe didnโ€™t have to. Things donโ€™t stay secret for very long around here,โ€ Nouria says. โ€œNo matter what The Reestablishment has you believe, weโ€™re all finding ways to pass messages to each other. All the resistance groups across the globe know the truth about you by now. And they love you more for it.โ€

I donโ€™t know what to say.

โ€œElla,โ€ she says softly, โ€œI was able to figure out why your parents have kept your sister a secret for so long. And I just wanted tโ€”โ€

โ€œI already know,โ€ I say, the words coming out quietly.

I havenโ€™t talked to anyone about this yet; havenโ€™t told a soul. Thereโ€™s been no time to discuss something this big. No time to have a long conversation. But I guess weโ€™re going to have it now.

Nouria is staring at me, stunned. โ€œYou know?โ€ โ€œEmmaline told me everything.โ€

A hush falls over the crowd. Everyone turns to look at me. Even Haider, Stephan, and Nazeera finally stop talking amongst themselves long enough to stare.

โ€œSheโ€™s kept in captivity,โ€ I say. โ€œShe lives in a holding tank, where she exists almost permanently underwater. Her brain waves are connected to tidal turbines that convert the kinetic energy of her mind into electricity. Evie, my mother, found a way to harness that electricityโ€”and project it outward. All over the world.โ€ I take a deep breath. โ€œEmmaline is stronger than Iโ€™ve ever been or ever will be. She has the power to bend the minds of the peopleโ€”she can warp and distort realitiesโ€” Here. Everywhere.โ€

Kenjiโ€™s face is a perfect encapsulation of horror, and his expression is reflected on dozens of other faces around me. Nazeera, on the other hand, looks stricken.

โ€œWhat you see here?โ€ I say. โ€œAround us? The decay of society, the broken atmosphere, the birds gone from the skyโ€” Itโ€™s all an illusion. Itโ€™s true that our climate has changed, yesโ€”weโ€™ve done serious damage to the atmosphere, to the animals, to the planet as a wholeโ€”but that damage is not irreparable. Scientists were hopeful that, with a careful, concerted effort, we could fix our Earth. Save the future. But The Reestablishment didnโ€™t like that angle,โ€ he says. โ€œThey didnโ€™t want the people to hope. They wanted people to think that our Earth was beyond salvation. And with Emmaline they were able to do just

that.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ Kenji says, stunned. โ€œWhy would they do that? What do they gain?โ€

โ€œDesperate, terrified people,โ€ Nouria says solemnly, โ€œare much easier to control. They used Ellaโ€™s sister to create the illusion of irreversible devastation, and then they preyed upon the weak and the hopeless, and convinced them to turn to The Reestablishment for support.โ€

โ€œEmmaline and I were designed for something called Operation Synthesis. She was meant to be the architect of the world, and I was to be the executioner. But Emmaline is dying. They need another powerful weapon with which to control the people. A contingency. A backup plan.โ€

Aaron takes my hand.

โ€œThe Reestablishment wanted me to replace my sister,โ€ I say.

For the first time, Nouria has gone still. No one knew this part. No one but me. โ€œHow?โ€ she says. โ€œYou have such different abilities.โ€

Itโ€™s Castle who says, โ€œItโ€™s easy to imagine, actually.โ€ But he looks terrified. โ€œIf they were to magnify Ellaโ€™s powers the way they did her sisterโ€™s, she would become the equivalent of a human atom bomb. She could cause mass destruction. Excruciating pain. Death when they please. Across tremendous distances.โ€

โ€œWe have no choice.โ€ Nazeeraโ€™s voice rings out, sharp and clear. โ€œWe have to kill Evie.โ€

And Iโ€™m looking out, far into the distance, when I say, quietly, โ€œI already did.โ€

A collective gasp goes through the crowd. Aaron goes still beside me. โ€œAnd now,โ€ I say, โ€œI have to kill my sister. Itโ€™s what she wants. Itโ€™s the

only way.โ€
